Nikon has announced three new lenses- The perfect kit replacement for D5500/D7200 users? And some serious telephoto.

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR Lens

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR

Quick thoughts – This shows a commitment from Nikon to the DX mount/APS-C sized sensors and will likely be an excellent travel lens – offering a very useful range with decent aperture.  I am curious how it will compare to the much cheaper but very good Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM $399 from B&H (my review).

Highlights:

  • F Mount Lens/DX Format
  • 24-120mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Maximum Aperture Range: f/2.8-4
  • Silent Wave Motor and MF Override
  • Nikon VR Image Stabilization

Price: $1,066.95

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR

Quick Thoughts: I expect these to be very sharp and they offer noticeable weight savings versus the older versions.

  • F Mount Lens/FX Format
  • Maximum Aperture: f/4
  • Vibration Reduction, Sport/Tripod Modes
  • Detachable, Rotatable Monopod Collar

Price: $10,296.95

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens

Way back in March we spent a few nights at the awesome #aurorabear yurt run by @frankstelges If you want to hang out at the coolest yurt while watching #auroraborealis reach out to him!! While waiting for the aurora to show up I ran the 80D in time-lapse mode and then stacked it all in #starstax which answers the question - what's it look like when you shoot the stars AND the full moon and StarStax it all. Captured with the #Canon #80D and 24mm f/2.8 lens. (Note - the 80D ran for 3 hours in near zero temps on one battery!)
Left to Right - Mahtotopa Mountain(8,671 ft), Little Chief Mountain (9,514 ft), Citadel Mountain (9,035 ft) - as seen from Going-To-The-Sun Point #GlacierNP is awesome even if #loganpass is closed! I could tell you when it will open but we were sworn to secrecy :) #mckaylive
Ponte Fabricio - one of many sweet bridges crossing the river Tiber.

  1. The 16-80, although being a great focal length, giving 10mm more than the direct competitor from Sigma, it’s still at an outrageously price! And I’m pretty sure that by the time it goes to 24mm it’ll be f/4.0. There are better options for that amount of money.

The telephoto lenses are just on separate leagues.

  2. What? Jeez, who’ll buy this? Donald Trump and the likes of him?
I thought my 24-70 f4 was pretty steep (I know, there’s alot of more expensive gear..but anyhoo).

    Why won’t Nikon release a Canon-level super-telelens at a reasonable price?
