The 24-70 range is extremely versatile for wedding, event and general photography. And while 3rd party manufacturers have offered a 24-70 f/2.8 with VR or VC in Tamron’s case it hasn’t been met with the greatest enthusiasm. Now we have what looks like a fantastic lens from Nikon – the only downsides? Price and Weight.

Fixed f/5.6- I expect this to be very sharp but it weighs more than the Tamron 150-600 f/5-f/6.3 which offers a little more range (at both ends) and is cheaper.  So how much sharper is the big question. We also need to put it up against the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary which is very similar to the Tamron.

Pay $100 more and get the Sigma f/1.4, it is a fantastic lens with 9 aperture blades vs 7 in the Nikon, not that that makes a big difference but I expect the Sigma is still going to come out on top and offers the faster max aperture.
