Three Simple Tips to Make Better Photos in 2022

  1. Simplify: When you bring your camera up to your eye you are focused on your subject - the thing that caught your eye in the first place. Don’t let your subject distract you from everything else in the frame. Pause a minute - evaluate the scene and ask yourself what can you do to simplify the scene. Try the BBB approach- Background Check- anything bright or distracting back there, any awkward intersections? Border Patrol - make a trip around the edge of your composition - anything poking in that is going to draw your viewer away - is part of a different story showing up? And finally - Boost- what elements can you use in the frame to strengthen your subject - leading lines, thoughtful framing? Take the photo and if you have time and you feel that this is a special photo - review make adjustments and capture again.

  2. Wait: Wait for the clouds to clear, for the light to get better, wait for the subject to be framed better or at least avoid awkward intersections, wait for a more interesting story. Too often I see photographers and travelers planning trips that don’t provide the time to wait at beautiful scenes. In 2022 travel slower - You might make fewer photos but the ones you do will be more impactful.

  3. Don’t Cheat the Shutter Speed rule - this is a back to the basics tip and it’s one that I see trip people up more often than I want. Your shutter speed should be 2x your focal length. If you are shooting on a full-frame camera at 50mm your shutter speed should be 1/100 of a second BUT you also need to consider your subject are you trying to capture a running dog, a flying bird? Take some time to study shutter speed charts and figure out what is best for the subject you are trying to capture.
