Canon 7D Mark II Hands-on from B&H

I love the B&H guys, they help make what I do possible.  They also do their own camera reviews and have a detailed overview of the form and function of the Canon 7D Mark II.  Associated with Scott Kelby and Canon they may not be quite so fair and balanced but it is still a good overview of the camera and I look forward to giving you my own thoughts soon.Thinking about preordering? GoPro Hero vs the HTC RE

Last we I wrote about the new GoPros, highlighting the fact that the new entry level GoPro, the Hero, was poised to crush the low level market of action cams.  This doesn't mean that other companies are going to give up or should give up. We mentioned this on the last podcast and now HTC has officially launched a device that looks like a small version of the military flashlight or a periscope or a weird tube of lipstick. HTC REThere are just two buttons on the device: A shutter button on the outside, which you press once to take a picture and long-press for a couple seconds to take video, and a slow-motion capture toggle that you have to hold down to activate before starting the video. This sounds similar to GoPros new quick start method where you hold the power down for a few seconds and immediately start filming.  The RE is smarter (supposedly) and has ditched the power button and will sense when it is needed aka you lift it out of the bag.Selling for $200 the RE offers 16MP f/2.8 lens with 146° view.  Spec wise it certainly seems better than the $130 GoPro Hero and it offers Bluetooth Connectivity and the ability to live stream via the app. The table below gives you a few more specs and the side by side vs the new GoPro Hero which sells for $130. Specs aside I am continually impressed with the quality out of the GoPros and the footage I have seen so far out of the RE is decent but noticeably less than what you would get from the Hero. The Hero offers a huge ecosystem of accessories and mounts.  The HTC RE will have a few mounts - see below and has a standard tripod socket in the bottom as well as a micro USB charging port.  Water proof for 30 minutes, a rubberized stopper, sold separately brings the waterproof-ness up to level with the GoPro.

Sony a7r Review & Samples

HOT: Adorama a7/a7R Trade in - ANY working interchangeable lens camera take a chunk off the price of the A7, A7 with 24-70 or A7r.In my search for a lighter travel camera I spent a few weeks with the Sony a7R. My video review is below along with some sample images.I found the a7R to produce gorgeous 36MP images with excellent dynamic range.

Sony a7R Pros:

  • Beautiful 36MP files - Medium format like quality in something that isn't even DSLR sized.
  • No Low pass filter for sharp detail
  • Wonderful Dynamic range- detail in highlights and shadows that can be pulled out is impressive
  • Small and light (A7R weight 1.03 lbs | 5D Mark III weight over 2lbs)
  • Vibrant and tilting screen - rarely felt like I needed to put my eye to viewfinder.
  • Good manual controls with decent customizability
  • Useful focus peaking for manual focus
  • Auto exposure dial works in manual mode when auto ISO is enabled
  • 1080p at 60fps.
  • Fun sony features like sweep panorama (with 36MP images you can make stunning panoramas!)
  • USB Charging - Ability to charge battery in camera or from a USB battery (also a drawback, no charger included)
  • Good Wifi connectivity for sharing and remote control.
  • Ability to add apps in camera - Star trail app for example

Sony a7R Cons:

  • Slow
    • to start up,
    • when new SD card is inserted - needs to create a recovery DB
    • focus
    • to clear buffer - camera locks up when clearing buffer
  • Battery life is short 300-400 shots and without an included charger forced to charge in camera (buy 3rd Party charger & additional batteries)
  • Crashes - I saw this camera crash way more than any other and at times would revet back to settings 15 minutes earlier - some I believe were a result of using the metabones adapter but other times it would just hang. UPDATE: I have heard from a few other A7R users and they don't experience crashes. I might have had a buggy copy.
  • Lens selection - Native lens selection is small and f/4 fastest with a few exceptions that are coming soon.  Most of the weight savings are offset by these lenses - but the quality is awesome and multiple adapters exist to use with Canon, Nikon or other lenses.
  • Loud shutter - with some rumors that causes blurred images at the slower shutter speeds. I didn't see that but for such a small body and mirror less camera it is loud.
  • Video quality is good (why is this a con then? I was hoping it would be noticeably better than my 5D Mark III and I could use this camera for travel photos and video for my channel, but it is only as good as 5D Mark III or a tiny bit better - not the difference you see in photos between the two)

Canon T6i (750D) Rumors and Speculation

Screenshot 2014-10-06 09.28.50Canon has a teaser counting down to the impossible - less than 24 hours as of monday morning.  Doubtful that this is camera related - any major announcements would have happened at Photokina. My experience in the past with Canon's mysterious countdowns and unveiling has always been a let down - sometimes printers, sometimes a new project that has no interest to me- so I refuse to get excited. But, I will keep my eyes and ears open and pass along any info.   This does remind me that we still have no info about the T6i (750D) so I went digging. It has been very quiet regarding the replacement for the Canon T5i- originally released in March of 2013 and offering only a minor upgrade to the T4i- the time for a replacement is due.  There was some speculation that Photokina would be the place and time but that has passed with just the 7D Mark II announcement.   The next show is PhotoPlus at the end of this month but still no credible information and in fact we are starting to hear that maybe nothing until the second quarter of 2015!!  That would make a 24 month release cycle from the T5i which is longer than any previous version and if we count the T4i as the actual release, since the T4i and T5i are nearly identical, we are talking almost three years!! Crazy!  But what might be crazier is the rumour that the T6i will be the first rebel to feature an electronic viewfinder (EVF) This means it won't be a dslr. No mirror box, no optical viewfinder. it will be a MIRRORLESS CAMERA!!T6i Specs (rumoured)

  • Mirrorless Camera
  • 20mp Dual Pixel AF Sensor (updated version of 70D sensor)
  • Digic 6
  • Articulated Touchscreen
  • WiFi

I slapped a T6i on an EOS-M (Canon's currently Mirrorless)Many have said that it is just a matter of time before more and more cameras become mirrorless - the design of a DSLR is ancient but has some advantages - many of those advantages have been erased or at least equalled with the advances of technology.  Dual Pixel focus and Digic 6 should allow this to be a fast performing camera and having access to Canon's huge lens selection is always important.   BUT! I have two questionsWill users looking to upgrade their current camera care that this isn't a DSLR?NO, I doubt many users will care if what they upgrade to has a mirror or EVF.  If it has the Canon logo and decent reviews(they don't even need to be stellar) they will buy when they are looking to upgrade.  I have evidence based on the hundreds of questions I get a week about which camera to upgrade to, many choose Canon despite there being a better option(performance, features and value) from other camera manufacturers. Is it too little too late to join the mirrorless race? This is a bit more difficult to answer- past the point of fashionably late to the party(probably always debated by the one who is actually late) but Canon has the lenses and within the camera space the brand Canon carries a huge amount of weight(see the first question above) . When people start to consider upgrading from their P&S or smart phone cameras many seem to consider Canon and Nikon and not much else.  An argument for "too late" - The Sony a6000(my review) is selling well and right now offers everything that the T6i probably will offer.  By the time the T6i actually comes to market we will probably have an a6100 and I wouldn't be surprised if it offered 4k video. Sony doesn't have the lens selection but they are working on that and with many higher end models photographers buying into the system at the a6000 level there is reason to see hope and room to grow. What about Canon's current mirrorless offering - the EOS-M and EOS-M2(sold in Japan) - The autofocus system isn't snappy enough to set it apart from P&S cameras and more importantly they used a different mount, making the huge lens selection argument null unless you use an adapter- something you can do with the a6000 or many other models.  The EOS-M was a half hearted attempt at the mirrorless market as was the Canon SL1 - the world's smallest DSLR - these were poor bluffs at the mirrorless market and it is time for Canon to go all in on mirrorless. Taking the rebel line mirrorless would be just that - all in!I'd love to know your thoughts. If this is really going to be a Q2 launch - April 2015 at the earliest, too little too late? Always time for Canon? Come back kid (if they aren't even really down yet)?  Leave a comment or sound off on my Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Digital.Photo.Recommendations

Image Critique - Oct 1 and Submission for Oct 6th

We had another fine critique and even experimented with using Lightroom to make the adjustments we were suggesting.  Something we will continue in the future.  Submit photos for next week's critique below. I ask that you submit a maximum of three(3) images. RAW or JPEG are acceptable and they should be a minimum of 1080 pixels on the short edge. We had several submitted this week that were too small to critique. I have been asked if images submitted in previous weeks, that were not critiqued, need to be submitted again?  At this time I ask that you submit your images each week.Upload Files through dbinbox.com

GoPro 4 and the Hero- Crushing the Action Cam Market

GoPro announced updated action cams yesterday.  The Hero 4 Black, Hero 4 Silver and the Hero.  Most people are talking about the new Hero 4 Black that allows 4k recording at 30fps but the real news here is the pricing on the new, numberless model, Hero - just $129.  The action cam market is quite crowded, though you might think there is only GoPro, and up until now one of GoPros weak points was price, with previous models starting at $299. The Hero at just $129 opens up the door for interested buyers who couldn't quite justify the price when they weren't sure the could even justify a need for a camera like this.  Polaroid made news recently with their cute little Cube (we chatted about it on Episode 27 of Photo Mish Mash) and at $99 it looked like a good deal, now that the Hero is here it seems to me to be worth spending $40 more.  Why?Polaroid Cube $99 - Buy from B&HScreenshot 2014-09-30 14.24.42

  • Burst Mode - (5 photos/second)
  • 32GB Micro SD Card Limit
  • Standard GoPro size fits all goPro accessories and mounts

The specs are very similar between the two cameras but the fact that you get a completely waterproof camera(inside the housing it comes with) and the additional modes- like time lapse- makes the GoPro Hero worth the extra money. The updated Hero 4 Black and Hero 4 Silver specs (compared to last year's 3+ Black)

Canon G7 X- 1" Sensor, Aimed at the Sony RX100?

Screenshot 2014-09-16 09.02.22Canon has announced a new point and shoot that should not be overlooked. The Canon G7 X is a slim, pocketable camera sporting a 1" sensor.Screenshot 2014-09-16 09.45.17Significantly larger than your typical P&S sensors and able to provide much better low light performance. The Sony RX 100 shares the same sensor size and possibly even the same sensor(G7 X has a Sony sensor).Sony's RX 100 and now Mark II and Mark III have been selling well and receiving favorable reviews - we will compare the two in a moment.

Canon G7 X Specs

  • 20.2MP 1" High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 6 Image Processor
  • 4.2x Optical Zoom f/1.8-2.8 IS Lens
  • 24-100mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • 3.0" 1,040k-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
  • High-Speed AF with 31 Focus Points
  • Full HD Video Recording at 60p
  • ISO 12,800 & 6.5 fps Continuous Shooting
  • Control Ring, Dials & Built-In ND Filter
  • Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC

A pocketable camera with a fast lens f/1.8 to f/2.8 that includes a touchscreen, full HD video with neat manual control ring and an ND filter for shooting at those faster apertures in bright light- this seems like a YouTubers dream camera and the screen does flip up for selfie framing.  Photo quality should be excellent as well.  No word if the remote control/app can trigger videos or if this is for photos only? Screenshot 2014-09-16 09.02.31 The current king of the large sensor compacts is the Sony RX 100 Mark III. On paper these two look very similar with the exception that the Sony offers a small popup viewfinder, The G7 X is LCD only. However, despite both having f/1.8-f/2.8 lenses  the G7 X offers a much better aperture range through the zoom- as you zoom with the Sony you quickly hit that f/2.8 and the G7 X stays wider well past that point.

Battery life on these little compacts isn't great but charging is relatively quick and you bring along a spare battery or two.Buy the Canon G7 X if you want the range and the best low light performance at the longer end of the range. Touchscreen is a bonus.  Buy the Sony RX 100 if you want a viewfinder and slow motion video.AND. . .If you don't mind carrying around a slightly larger camera- Panasonic has announced the LX100

Panasonic LX 100 - Pocketable Micro 4/3

Screenshot 2014-09-16 10.29.53The headline feature in the LX 100 is the Micro 4/3 sensor. The larger sensor offers a significant advantage in lower light at the expense of a slightly larger body but still smaller than the current crop of micro 4/3 cameras. You also have 4K video recording. Screenshot 2014-09-16 10.29.35

Spec of the Panasonic LX 100

Beyond the sensor your get excellent manual controls and 4K video recording(limited to 15 minutes) and a slightly faster lens.  The Wifi does support photos and control of video too.

Too early to call this post a 70D vs 7D Mark II and let's throw in the Canon 6D as well (as it is similar in price), but I did want to take a few moments and share some highlights from each camera to help you decide which would be best for you.Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.57

Canon 70D

$1099 Body Only $1449 with 18-135 STM - Buy from B&H Photo Video or AmazonStrengths:

  • Articulating touch screen with. . .
  • Excellent touch to focus control for photo and video (especially video) - focus and menu navigation is very easy for beginners- touch to manipulate.
  • On board flash
  • Competent focusing system and 7 FPS
  • Leaves room in budget for lenses (especially primes) see 6 reasons you should own a prime lens
  • Slightly smaller and more portable. 70D weight= 755g (1.66lbs) 7D Mark II weight = 910g (2.1lbs) and 6D = 770g (1.7lbs)
  • Wifi for remote control and image download.

Very good all around DSLR. User friendly touchscreen, Wifi and in a size that won't break your neck. Focusing is very good though not at the level of the 7D Mark II and tracking in video is also slower than 7D Mark II.Watch my Full Review of the Canon 70DScreenshot 2014-09-15 16.54.43

Canon 6D

$1,899 body only $2,499 ($2,299 after rebate) with EF 25-105 IS - Buy from B&H Photo Video or AmazonStrengths:

  • Full Frame Sensor - low light performance and detail in images is noticeably improved over 70D and 7D Mark II
  • Low Light performance (yes repeating myself here but that is the real strength of a full frame sensor like the one in the Canon 6D
  • GPS and WiFi built in

The Canon 6D is actually very similar in size to the Canon 70D - quite portable for a full frame camera but it does not provide an on board flash and just one SD card slot.  The Focusing system is SLOW and frame rate is just 4.5 fps. The center focus point is quite capable, especially in lower light but overall this is NOT the camera to use for any type of action.Watch my 6D vs 70D (Full Frame vs Crop Sensor) video

Summary of Canon 7D mark II vs Canon 70D vs Canon 6D

If the contest was decided by bullet points the 7D Mark II would be the clear winner, but not all these bullet points are equal for all photographers/videographers.  Each has its strengths as I have outlined. My Overall pick remains the Canon 70D - a good value with a solid feature set and image quality.  But if you will consistently be shooting fast action it will be worth the extra cost to buy the 7D Mark II. If you will find yourself in low light often and you don't mind buying an external flash - the Canon 6D would be your best bet.Still undecided? The one change here is the 40mm is EF, compatible with full frame and this 24mm is EF-S, only compatible with crop sensor cameras like the T5i, SL1 and 70D.   24mm on a crop sensor is a wonderful walk around focal length. 24mm * 1.6 = 38mm.

  • One Aspherical Element
  • Optimized Lens Coatings

Quick Thoughts on the Canon 7D Mark II

There is certainly some disappointment from videographers and some photographers that have been waiting for YEARS for the followup to the much loved Canon 7D.  In some respects it feels that Canon has continued to play it very safe with this release, no 4K, no WiFi or articulating touchscreen when just about every other serious camera released in the last year offers some or all of those features but I think there are two, maybe three reasons why this camera will still sell very well.1) Blisteringly fast FPS with serious autofocus brains at an affordable price- not everyone needs this but we are looking at the most competent focusing system at a price far below the 1Dx's $5000+ price tag.2) It lives in the Canon ecosystem - lenses make these cameras and having access to a huge and varied selection for a camera at this level is important and not to be overlooked.3) This all depends on that redesigned sensor-Canon states in their press release that this is a NEW sensor (not the same as is in the 70D) and I am starting to hear that maybe this provides the best APS-C performance of any sensor to date.  I suspect that might be pushing the truth some but I will reserve judgement until I get my hands on this camera. Now that it is official. What are your thoughts?Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.39 Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.52Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.57Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.03Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.09Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.15

Fuel Your Creative Passion With The Highly Anticipated Canon EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR Camera

New EOS 7D Mark II Camera Provides Captivating Creative Power at an Affordable PriceMELVILLE, N.Y., September 15, 2014 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to introduce the EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera, incorporating professional features and quality in an affordable DSLR. Building upon the proven success of the EOS 7D camera, this new EOS model features a range of "EOS firsts" such as Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors for superb image quality and rapid burst shooting up to 10 frames per second (fps), as well as Canon's first 65-Point* All Cross Type autofocus (AF) system for compositional freedom and accurate, spot-on fast focus. Great for shooting indoor activities such as sporting events, concerts, or weddings, the camera's impressive low-light shooting capabilities along with its up-to-10 fps high-speed shooting can capture a fast-break basketball dunk, a band's encore performance, a bird in flight or wildlife in exceptional quality. In addition, the EOS 7D Mark II is the second EOS DSLR camera to incorporate Canon's innovative Dual Pixel CMOS AF system for rapid and precise focusing of video as well as still images."With more processing power than any other EOS camera available today, the highly anticipated EOS 7D Mark II camera has everything serious photographers have come to expect from Canon's DSLRs and more," said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "And, recognizing that for some, creative expression may expand beyond still photography, we continue to support these creative passions by offering new and innovative Full HD video capabilities, such as second generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology in the EOS 7D Mark II camera as well."

Outstanding Performance

Within the camera's durable magnesium alloy body resides a newly developed 20.2 megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors, safeguarded by enhanced dust and weather resistance to protect the camera. Ideal for shooting in challenging lighting conditions ranging from indoor sports to dimly lit weddings, the camera features a standard ISO range of 100-16000 for both still and video (expandable to ISO 51,600). A new 65-point* All Cross-Type AF system with EV -3 sensitivity at the center point helps deliver sharp focus for still photos even in extreme low-light conditions on subjects with limited visible detail. The EOS 7D Mark II camera also features an enhanced version of Canon's EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF, originally introduced with the EOS-1D X DSLR camera, enabling the camera to recognize subjects based on face and color detection utilizing the new AE system, and can track subjects using all 65 AF points. The camera's improved EOS Scene Detection system features a new 150,000-pixel RGB+IR 252-zone metering sensor for enhanced precision. The wide-area 65-point AF array combined with EOS iTR and adjustable high-speed continuous burst shooting up to 10 fps enables the easy tracking and capturing of fast moving subjects virtually anywhere in the frame such as birds in flight or running backs eluding a tackle. A new and innovative AF Area Selection Lever nestled around the multi-controller on the back of the camera makes it easier than ever for photographers to switch between the seven supplied AF Point Selection modes without removing their eye from the viewfinder. At 10 fps, the camera's buffer capacity can consecutively capture up to 31 RAW images or 1,090 Large Fine JPEGsi. Built to last, the camera also features a shutter durability rating up to 200,000 cycles, approximately thirty three percent more than the original EOS 7D camera. A newly developed mirror mechanism uses motorized control to help reduce impact and enhance camera performance during high-speed continuous shooting. In addition to adjustable high- and low-speed continuous shooting modes, single-frame shooting and two self-timer settings, the EOS 7D Mark II camera also features silent drive modes for single frame and continuous shooting. The silent settings support discreet camera operation in quiet locations. The EOS 7D Mark II camera's advanced AE system can detect and compensate for flickering light sources such as sodium vapor lamps that are often used in gymnasiums and indoor swimming pools. When enabled, this system automatically adjusts shutter release timing to help reduce disparities in exposure and color especially during continuous shooting.

Innovative AF Technology

The EOS 7D Mark II camera features the next generation of Canon's exclusive Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF) technology, originally introduced with the EOS 70D DSLR camera. New DAF features include user-selectable adjustments for Movie Servo AF Speedii and Movie Servo AF Tracking Sensitivity. Additionally, overall focusing speed, face detection performance, and performance in low light and with low-contrast subjects have been improved over previous Canon models. Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs proprietary Canon sensor technology in which effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-detection focus measurement simultaneously to achieve dramatically improved AF performance in both video and Live View still imaging modes. With Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF system and customizable Movie Servo AF, the camera provides continuous phase-detection AF during video recording for quick and accurate focus tracking of moving subjects over approximately eighty of the image area measured horizontally and vertically. DAF focusing modes include Face Detection with Tracking, FlexiZone Multi with 31 AF zones, and FlexiZone Single that allows users to position a focusing frame on the camera's LCD screen. Canon's DAF supports over 100iii models of Canon EF lenses (including many earlier models), providing a wide array of options for photographers to explore.

Expanding Creativity

The EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera provides a wealth of creative controls building on the features and functions of the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X professional digital cameras. The new camera's AI Servo AF III autofocusing algorithm is similar to that of the EOS-1D X camera in that tracking parameters (tracking sensitivity, acceleration/deceleration tracking, and AF point auto switching) can be easily customized for specific shooting situations, using the same type of AF Configuration Menu. This capability makes it easy for EOS 7D Mark II camera users to match AI Servo AF settings when used together with EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III cameras, while also providing a high level of performance at an affordable price point. The EOS 7D Mark II camera also offers the same level of High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Multiple Exposure (ME) functionality that was originally featured in the EOS 5D Mark III camera. The HDR mode includes five HDR shooting functions and allows users to save all source images in addition to the composited HDR image. Similarly, Multiple Exposure mode provides four compositing methods and also allows users to save individual source images.Photographers and cinematographers will appreciate improved custom controls including a built-in intervalometer and bulb timer, also EOS DSLR firsts, to enable the capture of time-lapse images and long- exposure images. These features are ideal for recording fireworks, star trails, sunrises and more.In addition to optional settings for Peripheral Illumination Correction and Chromatic Aberration Correction, found in other current high-end EOS models, the EOS 7D Mark II camera, for the first time, adds Distortion Correction that operates with most EF and EF-S lenses to improve image quality even further while recording video and in-camera JPEGs. The My Menu feature has also been improved with the ability to store more user-selected settings in five additional tabs.A new and improved Intelligent Viewfinder provides approximately one hundred percent field of view, while adding the ability to superimpose a customizable selection of camera settings data such as dual-mode electronic level display, grid, exposure mode, white balance mode and AF mode. A bright, three-inch Clear View II LCD monitor (approximately 1,040,000 dots) on the back of the camera displays information and menus clearly even in bright sunlight. The EOS 7D Mark II camera is compatible with interchangeable focusing screens including the standard Eh-A as well as the optional Eh-S Super Precision Matte for use during manual focusing with large aperture lenses.A built-in GPSiv Receiver provides a digital compass and can record location information including longitude, latitude, elevation, camera direction and universal coordinated time (UTC) as EXIF data for geotagging both images and movie files in real time. The built-in pop-up flash is convenient for many applications and can also act as an optical controller with compatible off-camera EX-series Speedlites for enhanced pro-quality lighting effects. The EOS 7D Mark II camera features dual card slots for SD/SDHC/SDXC and CF memory cards, including Ultra High Speed (UHS-1) SD cards. Data transfer speeds from the camera to a personal computer are enhanced with the addition of a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port.

Stunning Movie Capability

The EOS 7D Mark II camera offers users the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD or 720p HD video up to 60p enabling slow-motion capture at full resolution in either ALL-I or IPB codecs with optional embedded time code, exceeding the specifications of other current EOS cameras. Users can also choose between .MOV and .MP4 recording formats for maximum flexibility. The EOS 7D Mark II camera's mini HDMI port can be used to record uncompressed Full HD video to external recorders.Canon's Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, such as the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, significantly reduce focus motor noise, letting the EOS 7D Mark II camera's built-in microphone capture clear audio of the scene being shot without picking up unwanted noise from the lens. The EOS 7 D Mark II camera also features a stereo microphone port and outputs stereo audio via the camera's mini-HDMI port. The EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera is equipped with a headphone jack for real-time audio monitoring, as well as a silent control feature that allows users to adjust audio levels during recordings. Other built-in ports include a PC socket for external flash units and an N3 socket for dedicated Canon wired remote control accessoriesv. A cable protector is provided to maximize safety when using the USB 3.0 and mini-HDMI ports.

Samsung NX1 - Speed Demon? Mirrorless Sports Photographers Dream?

I haven't talked about Samsung much lately- they seem to be producing quality cameras but not having received a single question about their cameras from any of my readers and viewers means I don't spend my limited time researching and reviewing cameras that no one is asking about. That might change with this latest release - it certainly has grabbed some headlines with 15FPS, 205 phase detect AF points, 153 of which are cross-type, covering 90% of the frame and the ability to record 4K video. Oh it has those current features - touchscreen and NFC/Wifi that help to make the 7D Mark II (before it is even officially released) look a little shabby. Of course Canon has a significantly greater lens selection and ecosystem but with this NX1 being packed full of features I am willing to bet more than a few photographers will make the "sacrifice." I will have a full review of this camera soon. Follow on Facebook, Youtube and my Newsletter to stay subscribed. Here are the photos and the full specs of the new Samsung NX1

  • New 28MP Back Side Illuminated APS-C Sensor
  • The NX AF System III on the NX1 is supported by 205 phase detect auto focus points
  • NX1 can shoot at up to 15 FPS at full resolution
  • Captures UHD/4k video to SD card or can output it via HDMI port
  • OLED EVF has a lag time of 5ms, fast enough to be undetectable to the human eye.
  • Incorporates the newest Wi-Fi standard, IEEE802.11ac
  • The body is magnesium alloy; water and dust sealed.

The Samsung NX1 will be available mid-October for $1500. The easiest solution is to buy the Photoshop/Lightroom Creative Cloud for Photographers at 9.99/mo. This will provide you the full version of Photoshop, Lightroom and Lightroom mobile. When Lightroom 6 is released you will automatically be upgraded.  Click here to purchase Creative Cloud for Photographers at 9.99/moUPDATE 1-15-2015: Lightroom 6 will require a 64 bit OSFrom the Adobe Blog

In order to leverage the latest operating system features and technologies, Lightroom 6 will require Mac OS X 10.8 or above, or a 64 bit version of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Focusing our work on more modern operating systems and architectures allows us to spend more time adding functionality requested by users, including additional advanced imaging features and improving general application performance.

If you are on Mac OS X 10.7, or a 32 bit version of Windows, you will continue to be able to install and run Lightroom 5 and use Lightroom mobile. However, you will not be able to install Lightroom 6 until you upgrade to a supported operating system.

If you are currently running Mac OS X 10.7, Apple offers a free upgrade (here) to a more current operating system. For Windows users, Microsoft has a how-to reference (here) to help you determine whether you are running a 32 or 64 bit version of Windows.

Original Post -Adobe Lightroom 6. I had thought we would get some info in June 2014 at Adobe's Creative Cloud announcements but all we heard was a reiteration of the mobile versions and how well they worked with Lightroom 5 (Technically 5.5 for all the mobile stuff). So when will we hear about Lightroom 6?Current information from the Cyberland site points to a October Beta with a full release in March 2015.What features will we get in Lightroom 6?Lightroom 6 features that were recently revealed by Cyberland are simple UI tweaks that makes things more streamlined compared to 5.5 but the biggest "features" are the stability and performance enhancements. With reports that Lightroom 6 has been greatly optimized running almost 70 to 100 percent faster than Adobe Lightroom 5.5!The other big question in my mind - will this be a standalone release or only available through the now permanent $9.99/mo plan that provides Photoshop and Lightroom. What features would you like to see in Lightroom 6?

So why two different lenses that offer the same range? Two versions - Sports prioritizes optical performance and the Contemporary version prioritizes portability.  Screenshot 2014-09-12 08.45.58Designed to offer a higher level of optical precision and contains 24 elements in 16 groups, with two FLD and three SLD elements to control aberrations and distortions. It has a minimum aperture of f/22, minimum focusing distance of 8.5', and maximum magnification ratio of 1:5. The lens measures 4.8 x 11.4", and weighs 6.3 lb. Sigma is targeting photographers who place the utmost value on performance over weight, along with refined handling capabilities. The lens will be available in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sigma SA mounts.Screenshot 2014-09-12 08.46.04This Contemporary version contains 20 elements in 14 groups, with one FLD element and three SLD elements. It has a minimum aperture of f/22, minimum focus distance of 9.2', and maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 and shaves some dimensions off the Sports version to measure 4.1 x 10.2". Sigma has not determined the final weight yet, but it is safe to say it will be lighter than the Sports version, thanks to it is smaller dimensions and fewer optical elements. It, too, will be available in Canon EF, Nikon F, Sigma SA, and Sony A mounts.

A new All-in-one (AIO) from Sigma 18-300

This APS-C-only, all-in-one zoom lens features a 27-450mm equivalent focal-length range and is targeted at photographers who want to travel as lightly as possible and don’t want to carry around multiple lenses. The lens’s design utilizes four FLD elements and one SLD element to help minimize chromatic aberration while maintaining consistent sharpness and clarity. Sigma has also incorporated a new Optical Stabilizer system, which should help with handheld shooting in difficult lighting, and a Hyper Sonic Motor for fast and quiet autofocus.  I wonder how it will compare to the Tamron 16-300 I reviewed earlier this year.  No word on pricing or release date.Screenshot 2014-09-12 08.46.11

The D750 sits just below the D810, borrowing and actually improving on the AF system with 51 AF points.  It does include a popup flash and all of the video features of the D810 but adds WiFI and a tilty screen.  In this crowded line up the D750 offers lots to love and the body only price point is reasonable for a camera at this level.  I expect that this will be in high demand through fall and into winter.
