UPLIFT Desk 900 & Workspace/Studio Tour

This is my review of the UPLIFT Desk 900 and a tour of my work space

UPLIFT  Desk 900 Adjustable-Height Standing Desk

I would add that it is an adjustable-height SIT or STAND desk.My job requires spending long hours at a desk and sitting for hours on end is really unhealthy. I would get out of bed in the morning, make my long commute down the hallway and plunk into a chair, sitting there most of the day except for short breaks for meals. This job requires long hours in front of the computer and sitting for all of those hours was really taking it's toll on my well being.   In the past I have experimented with standing desks but found that some tasks were better suited for sitting and I didn't like being locked into standing and all the DIY approaches seemed really clunky - balancing my computer on a box wasn't really an option - What I really wanted was something that allowed me to easily go from sitting to standing and vice versa. The answer is the UPLIFT Desk 900 -  This is a motorized desk that goes from sitting to standing in seconds. I have had this desk for about two weeks and still grin like a kid every time I adjust the height - it is just so smooth and easy.Setup was easy - we bolted the legs on the bottom - used the included cable management system to keep the desk wires hidden and flipped it right side up and plugged it in!Some of the uplift Desk optionsI received the black legs and maple top - You have a huge range of customization options including the option to purchase just the legs and supply your own top.   The build quality is exceptional and the legs can support 335 lbs! Uplift Desk Control PanelYou have a little button panel you can mount anywhere under the desk that provides a LED readout and 4 memory buttons along with up and down arrows for precise adjustments. The desk moves smoothly and quickly, taking less than 10 seconds to go from my programmed sitting to standing positions.   I worried about wearing the desk out as I was giving forcing the cats to ride up and down one day but with a 5 year complete warranty I feel safe giving them as many rides as they will stand. My routine now starts with standing - It feels great to start the day in a more active position and have the option to easily sit for short periods for some tasks. Additionally this desk is an awesome studio surface as I can easily adjust it for best height for the shot I am looking for when creating my videos. The price starts at $699.00 & includes FREE shipping.Shop and learn more at The Human Solution

Reader Report: The Photography Show

One of my readers/viewers(Scott Fautley) had a chance to attend the recent "The Photography Show" in Birmingham England and shared some thoughts and photos. Yes - it is just called "The Photography Show"I had the pleasure of visiting the Birmingham NEC for the UK Photography show – courtesy of my Girlfriend’s stepdad who is a professional Food, Drink and Product Photographer (His work is at http://www.stevepaynephotography.co.uk/)Scott Writes -I had never attended this kind of show before, but knew I’d be able to land my hands on some new gear and test out some bits.We got there about 11am, the NEC is enormous and several other conventions etc were going on at the time, since this was the opening day and usually a day for the consumers, I was expecting it to be busy and of course it was – but not too bad.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16896714055/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709077818/in/album-72157651093350278/The first thing we came into was the Canon stand – I say stand, the area was enormous and absolutely packed – we decided to come back later.ZeissThe next stand was the Zeiss. I have seen a 55mm 1.4 Zeiss Otus before, however that was Matt Granger’s and his is Nikon mount – the guys as Zeiss were really friendly and let me take a look at both the 55 and new 85 Otus. The great thing about these shows is they let you try out all of their gear!I snapped off a few shots on the Zeiss 85mm at F2.8 and F1.4 – it is so sharp, but incredibly difficult to get perfect focus at 1.4 because of the tiny depth of field and manual focus only. I took a series of shots and checked the focus peaking on magic lantern to ensure I’d got one, but it took me about 5 shots! They were doing a show special price, £3,000 down from £3,300 – probably not for me hey…https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16870781786/in/set-72157651093350278TamronI moved onto the Tamron stand, which surprisingly wasn’t too large.Their distribution manager said their demand has really stepped up since the new 24-70 and 70-200 VC lenses were released. They had the new 15-30mm F2.8 VC. I’m not sure if this was a finished version or the pre-production model. It’s nice and sharp however when you have a lens this wide, you need to consider your metering setting as evaluative threw my exposure way off, nearly 2 stops in fact. It’s very similar in size and weight to the 24-70 VC and is very nice indeed but has a very large bulbous front element so won’t accept a lot of filters – 15mm is incredibly wide on a full frame camera.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16276712453/in/set-72157651093350278(sample from the TAMRON SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC)SamyangNot quite as wide as my next stand – Samyang. In the UK the same firm distribute Samyang and Tamron, Samyang said that film-makers are really using their lenses a lot since they are optically superb, and the newly designed Cine range has focus rings purposely made for pulling focus. I tried out the 12mm 2.8 Fisheye which has 180 degree field of view, I could see my own finger when focusing! Focus on these requires some getting used to but when you’ve got it, again they are really sharp glass. The 14mm 2.8 has a similarly wide field of view but far less distortion. You have to click your aperture on these lenses old school so you don’t actually know what your F-stop was after the event, but they meter just fine.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16710566429/in/set-72157651093350278(Sample from the Samyang 12mm 2.8 Fisheye)LytroAfter a bit more of a wander I stumbled across Lytro.Lytro were probably the best chat I had at the entire event. If you don’t know much about them – in short, they have a camera that you change the depth of field in post, it’s an odd concept but one that could prove hugely useful. Currently it’s held back by relatively low resolution and a small sensor. The ergonomics are great, although I did suggest they added an EVF or at least have the option of one to appeal to a larger market. They said they have the technology to manipulate depth of field in video - that would be quite something. Note from Toby: I have heard Lyrto is mostly abandoning the photo market and concentrating efforts on video with emphasis on virtual reality - It all still feels like a gimmick but I am sure this technology will be incorporated into cameras - just not sure how far in the future.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16870822986/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709096178/in/set-72157651093350278SonySony had a large stand, I had a chance to try out the A7R and the A7 II – both are nice in the hand and well built. The light in the hall wasn’t great and you do notice a slight lag in the EVF – it certainly wasn’t bad but something that would take getting used to if you were a DSLR shooter. The resolution is also nothing like looking through an Optical viewfinder i.e. Life…https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16689401747/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16896747265/in/set-72157651093350278At these events it’s nice to see lots of different companies offering different print options – ones on plexiglass really looked amazing and contemporary.HasselbladHasselblad was great fun for those who are interested in medium format and studio shooting. They had a Marilyn Monroe style model which they were allowing visitors to shoot with an H5D (unsure which back).https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16276770633/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16274385264/in/set-72157651093350278KOWANearby were KOWA lenses who make a selection of high quality Micro 4/3rds lenses and Telephoto Zooms, all of which are manual focus. I must say the build quality of these were superb. Note from Toby: I only recently learned that Kowa made lenses, I have a spotting scope from Kowa and it is fantastic.DronesAs you would expect there were plenty of drones. I saw plenty from DJI and other manufacturers.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16689436017/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709141078/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16896913895/in/album-72157651093350278/(GH4 on a SERIOUS drone)CanonThe main event for me finally came – the Canon stand had died down. As there were a lot of consumers there, the areas surrounding the T6i/T6s (750D/760D) were busy, but access to the 5DS and 5DSR was relatively clear. I got my hands on the 5DSR. The sides were sealed up to ensure nobody snuck a card in.One Canon rep made of point of telling me it’s a totally new body, since I actually own a 5D Mk3 (and had one in my hand) you’d think he’d know a bit better. It’s IDENTICAL. The menus, the grip, the dials – all the same. Any re-design is internal. This isn’t a bad thing, but don’t expect this to feel like a new camera. It is a 5D Mark 3 with a higher resolution sensor. In terms of operating speed, it felt about the same, I suppose that means it’s a bit quicker as it’s handling those huge 50mp files.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709405970/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16689486687/in/set-72157651093350278Canon said to me that every Canon L lens is designed with the next 5 years of camera’s in mind, so lenses in 2010 should still get great detail out of the 5DS range. They said they had no idea when the 5D Mark 4 was coming, they said they are not expecting it this year though and it is highly unlikely to feature 4k video because of cooling issues.Note from Toby: Sometimes it seems Reps have no clue and sometimes they are right on - either way I still think 4K is a big question for the Mark IV, not because they can't do it - because they won't do it. Also - cooling issues? The LX100 can shoot 4K, the GH4 can shoot 4K - these smaller cameras are not bursting into flames . . .I also had the chance to try the new 11-24 F4 L. It felt very nice, 11mm is crazy wide on a FF but remember as this isn’t a fisheye – it’s field of view is not as wide as the 12mm Samyang. As you’d expect – at 11mm the distortion away from the centre is still quite evident, not as bad as a fisheye though. It’s lovely and sharp, you’d hope so for £2,800!https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16870925006/in/set-72157651093350278(taken with the 11-24 f4 L)https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16710690409/in/album-72157651093350278/(taken with the 11-24 f4 L)NikonNikon had a nice big stand, it was laid out better than Canon’s which allowed the crowds to flow. The new 300m F4 was available to use, the compact size of that prime is brilliant and could comfortably be hand held. I got a nice look up close on the D810 and D4s. As you’d expect, 2 phenomenal cameras.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16895632432/in/album-72157651093350278/https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16895637212/in/album-72157651093350278/https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16710709759/in/album-72157651093350278/SigmaThe final stand I spent any time of note was the Sigma. The constant flow was for the 150-600mm, I saw a lot of people try out that lens, it looked fantastically well built. I was more interested in the 50mm Art series.Having had the chance to use it – WOW. Beautifully built, focus was snappy and the image quality absolutely stunning on my 5D Mark 3. I’d love them to make an 85mm and the sales rep said there will be one at some stage.Note from Toby: Scott leaves us with a little love of Pentaxhttps://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709252358/in/album-72157651093350278/https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16710739849/in/album-72157651093350278/(The camera Christina is drooling over)https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16689559637/in/album-72157651093350278/(The camera Christina is drooling over)See Scott's full gallery on Flickr and give him some thanks for taking the time to share his thoughts and photos. Samsung NX1 Review, the BEST Mirrorless Camera?

After spending a few weeks with the Samsung NX1 and 16-50 f2-f2.8 lens I am ready to share my review.Samsung NX1 Video Review: More NX1 CoverageSamsung NX1 Pros:

  • 28MP Sensor - provides excellent resolution, detail and clean high ISO images(some of the best I have seen from any crop sensor camera)
  • 15 FPS - The fastest of any camera in this price range and class
  • Excellent Auto focus system - 205 Phase Detection points. I was very impressed with the speed and reliability of focus from this camera.
  • 4k video looks gorgeous and the H.265 compression keeps the file sizes reasonable.
  • Serious video features including 120fps for slow mo
  • Wifi, Bluetooth and NFC provide this camera with multiple remote control and wireless image options.
  • Well built weather sealed magnesium alloy body
  • Articulating touchscreen is responsive and well designed - a step above other touchscreens currently on the market.
  • Top Screen LCD for quick glance at your setings
  • Nicely implemented time lapse options - produce video or still images in camera
  • USB Charging (bring a RavPower battery with you and you can charge the camera anywhere, anytime)

Samsung NX1 Cons:

  • Lens Ecosystem - Limited, no zooms above 300mm and only a few professional level prime lenses. (see my recommended lenses)
  • H.265 Support is limited and requires lengthy transcoding options for editing (this should change soon)
  • I am frustrated that there is still no way to remove AF from the shutter button, limiting the usefulness of the AF-ON button for back button focus.
  • Size - Although the NX1 is smaller than most DSLRS it is larger than most mirrorless cameras and you won't see much size, weight savings if you went with the NX system.
  • Cost - Body only the NX1 is a reasonable $1499 - expensive yes but this camera combines the best of several other classes of cameras.  When you start to add lenses, like the fantastic 16-50 f2-f2.8 you end up paying nearly $3,000 and that is an expensive system that still feels limiting for some.

Recommended Lenses for Samsung NX1 and NX500

Below is a complete list of NX mount lenses.Recommended Lenses:NX1: The 16-50 f2.-f2.8 is a fantastic lens, it may look expensive, costing nearly the same as the NX body itself but he quality of this lens blew me away and I strongly recommend buying this "kit" lens with the NX1. The one real drawback to the lens is the weight - it isn't light so the little 20mm or 30mm prime lenses are excellent when you want to travel light.16mm f2 - that's FAST. Stays at f2 till 20mm where it hits 2.2. At 24mm f2.5 and at 33mm f2.8NX500: While you can use the 16-50 f/2-f/2.8 with the NX500 it creates a more unbalanced user experience and defeats  the point of buying a small camera like the NX500. I recommend going with the 16-50 kit lens that comes with the NX500 and also picking up one of the prime lenses like the 20 or 30. These give you better quality, better low light performance and do it in a small and compact form factor.

Adapters:Fotodiox makes an NX to EF mount adapter that I discuss in my NX review. At this time I cannot recommend it unless you are deserparet to mount EF lenses on your NX. It is a dumb adapter, meaning you will lose aperture control(the lens will be at its widest aperture), manual focus and no image stabilization(if the lens offered it) - Check out the Fotodiox Adapter on B&H PHoto Third Party Lenses for NX mount cameras:Bower, Samyang and Rokinon offer excellent manual focus and manual aperture lenses for the NX system - perfect for video where you will not need to use the NX autofocus system.See the complete list at B&H Photo

Canon 5D Mark IV Rumors

Canon 5D Mark IVNorthlight Images has received some updated info on the replacement for the Canon 5D Mark III, for those waiting patiently it isn't the best news -

  • 5D Mark IV won't be along until later in the year, not until the 5Ds/R is shipping in reasonable numbers.
  • Timing depends on just how well it sells and to whom - 5D3 sales in Europe have been holding up well, which might push the 5D4 back beyond the update of the 1D X.
  • This may or may not fit in with info from the far east, that the 5D4 is due in August/September
  • Current rumored specs - 28MP, 9fps and with 4k video. With a 'significant' advance in Canon's flash control capabilities. This would also include adapters/controllers and firmware updates for recent models to make more use of the functionality.

It is clear to me that we will certainly not see a 5D Mark IV replacement before August and maybe even later in the year or next! The gap between the 5D Mark II and III was a similar amount of time - 5D Mark II was announced Sept 2008 and the 5D Mark III was announced March 2012.A few weeks back we shared some specs that might be the 5D Mark IV (see below) At the time I did not expect those to be true, maybe a new camera but not the 5D Mark IV.  The specs above do seem likely but the reality is, this far from launch we just don't know and are guessing.  The one item I am still not convinced will happen is 4k in this camera. Canon has said and backed-up with recent releases that they are very focused on creating cameras targeted to more narrow markets- the 5Ds/R are clearly for photographers, very little video there. The 7D Mark II is clearly for sports and wildlife. Will the 5D Mark IV continue to be this all around machine that that the Mark III offers or will they want videographers to move toward their cinema line?Mentioned in February as possible 5D Mark IV specs and I went on record saying - no way. This may be a future camera from Canon but it will not be the 5D Mark IV.A camera currently being tested specifications

  • 18mp Full Frame CMOS
  • ISO 100-204,800
  • 61 AF Points (all crosstype)
  • 12fps
  • Dual CFast
  • 4K Video Capture

With the recent Canon Price drops - I do know it is a great time to buy a 5D Mark III or used 5D Mark II

All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Eye-Fi Mobi Pro - Wireless RAW transfer

I have reviewed and generally been a fan of Eye-fi cards in the past. These are little SD cards that include WiFI capabilities along with modest storage. Last November I shared my setup of their Pro X2 cards for use in 7D Mark II, a camera sadly lacking in any WiFi capabilities.  My review of the mobi was less positive. With the mobi every photo you took transferred and for anyone taking more than a few photos this was a serious drain on battery life and something I found unnecessary. I continued to use the Pro X2 cards that required a more complicated setup allowed me easy selective transfer.   The newest card in the line up seems to marry the features of the Pro line with the ease of setup of the mobi line.Eye-Fi Mobi PROWhat does the Mobi Pro offer:

  • Cloud-connected WiFi SD card - includes 1yr Eyefi Cloud membership with unlimited photo storage
  • Transfer photos to smartphone, tablet, PC or Mac as you take them
  • Transfer both RAW, JPEG and video wirelessly at home or on-the-go.
  • Selective Transfer
  • Send RAW files to your desktop for post-processing with tools like Adobe Lightroom.

Why choose the Mobi SD card over your camera's built in Wifi?

  • RAW Transfer to desktop - This is something I get asked about frequently and few cameras offer image transfer to desktop computers and RAW transfer is even more rare.

[yop_poll id="2"]Leave a comment if you want to share a thought or different answer on the wifi in our cameras poll. Interested?  eyefi mobiPro 32GB + WifiBuy from B&H PHoto or Amazon for $99 for 32GB.

Review: Kamerar QV 1 Viewfinder

KAMERAR QV-1 LCD VIEWFINDER VIEW FINDER

LCD Viewfinders have several benefits including:

  • Create a shaded view of the LCD in sunny conditions, helpful for judging focus and exposure
  • Magnification of the lcd for greater level of detail and focus
  • Adding a 3rd stability point giving you more options for smoother video while on the go
  • Block out the distractions and allow you to focus on your composition

My Video Review of the Kamerar QV 1 Viewfinder

Buy the Kamerar QV 1 from:

 Kamerar QV 1 Pros:

  • Durable construction
  • Quick release system and Manfrotto PL501 compatible plate
  • Quick flip for even easier access to the touchscreen
  • Fit smoothly with easy adjustable range
  • Reversible Eye-cup for left or right eye viewing
  • 2.5x magnification

Kamerara QV 1 Cons:

  • Focusing mechanism feels sticky - this isn't something you should need to adjust
  • No lens cap for eye-piece. Honestly this is something I would toss as soon as it arrived but some like having caps.

Bottom line: for the money this is a well made and excellent option for videographers with DSLRs or mirrorless cameras shooting in conditions that make the LCD difficult to see.   Even in normal conditions the magnification and general benefits of using a viewfinder make this a recommended purchase.  I have even found it useful for manual focusing during macro photo work.Example of Magnification[gallery columns="2" link="file" ids="7686,7687"]Buy the Kamerar QV 1 from:QV 1

Things to Watch out for When Buying Camera Kits

D5300 with 18-55As we've had more than a few people starting out ask, and sometimes buy, the questionable camera kits found online this article might help clarify a few things for any first time DSLR buyers. For most cases, with a few exceptions for the larger stores, you get the right camera with little or no warranty and an assortment of poor quality accessories. For the purpose of having an example to this point I’ll be using a recent eBay purchase from one of our readers.Grey Market ProductsFor a first time buyer noticing the word import buried in the details of a really good sale is not going to be something they’re looking for usually. Generally for some of the stores it’s often hidden well enough it would be easy to gloss over without knowing the implications and some stores don’t mention it at all. Imports are commonly referred to as grey market, a product imported from another country for a lower price then resold here bypassing proper import channels such as Canon USA and Nikon USA. While the practice is somewhat shady it’s completely legal and most of the time, but not always, the camera is the same as what you would get from an authorized store such as Amazon.

Note: If you've already made your purchase and wondering if your camera is legitimate call the manufacturer, they can lookup your camera by it’s serial number.

What does this mean for you? Officially you don’t exist meaning no support, repairs, and especially no rebates. Now in reality Canon COULD refuse to honor warranty in the USA but past experience suggests that they don't really care and if you have a warranty card with matching serial numbers you SHOULD be fine. There are two COULDS AND SHOULDS in there - it is a risk during the warranty period getting repairs. Basically this means you're assuming the risk that while they may fix your camera if it breaks under warranty, while unlikely there is the chance they won’t being grey market, which Canon and Nikon repair service can be expensive. Not all stores are equal and if you've been a fan of this site for awhile you’ll see we do post grey market deals from time to time. The benefit of larger companies offering grey market products such as Adorama, B&H, and some of the more legitimate eBay stores is that while you do get a modest discount you also get a decent warranty through their stores for service. You are getting your money’s worth with their warranty over smaller companies and in this case while its not the manufacturer directly they're going to be the best option if any issues pop up.For other smaller stores such as those found on eBay and Amazon its best to do a bit of research on the sale. First check if the store is an authorized dealer with the links below, they might say they are an official dealer but it’s worth a check. I've had a couple different people send in messages for help that bought cameras from an authorized dealer just to find out they are authorized, but for Canada or another country. If its not authorized locally that usually means its not a unit local to your area and technically grey market. The internet is a good source of info make sure to read the reviews, check online, and you can always ask us for help. When it comes to a grey market on eBay a SquareTrade warranty is not equal to a manufacturer warranty and while better than nothing they can be very difficult at times dealing with warranty issues.

Canon USA Authorized Dealer List | Nikon USA Authorized Dealer List

Yes grey market can be a good deal but for a first time buyer you're still better off buying from an Authorized dealer. For our reader it was unfortunate but the listing did show it was an import and lacked a warranty, albeit far down in the details and easy to miss. When you buy grey market its like buying a used car from someone in that you assume all the risk yourself. Starting out this also means you’ll have trouble with support as any questions or issues you have with your camera could be turned away.Included Parts and AccessoriesNikon Warranty CardYes you’re getting a DSLR but before purchasing and when you get the camera you should check the included accessories listed with the camera against the manufacturer’s website. If you think you purchased from an authorized dealer the first hurdle would be the correct warranty card for your country, without it getting your camera fixed can be difficult. Checking the listing for issues can solve a lot of problems but after getting your camera its worth that double check for the correct manuals and manufacturer batteries as with some previous cases these items have been removed or replaced with inferior items.Nikon 18-55 VRI vs VRIICheck the kit lens! A lot of these cameras were bought body only so make sure you’re getting the proper lens. The Nikon D5300 should come with a new VRII 18-55mm lens which in the readers case was swapped for the older VRI lens that ships with the D5200, a lens which is not recommended if possible due to its photo quality. Take the time to check your lenses, a D5300 uses AF-S lenses and not AF except for manual focus. Kit lenses for the Canon Rebel line should be listed as STM.One of the issues you can have buying a unit of this kind is the battery charger, fortunately in this case the readers was swapped for a US charger but reading online about this listing not everyone got that luxury. The camera was meant for another country so it’s not a big surprise you're still out money for a charger in Nikon’s case, for Canon $4-6 for a 2 slot non-polarized power cord to plug in the charger. Unfortunately for someone starting out unless they can find one at a local store you’re stuck waiting for one in the mail with a nice shiny paperweight after that partial battery charge dies.“Free” ExtrasNoThere's no such thing as a free lunch, if your kit comes with 3000 items yet still costs the same as an authorized camera from B&H things don’t exactly add up. A memory card, cleaning cloth, bag, and maybe an extra battery makes a decent starting point. Starting out most of the accessories they offer are nice and shiny but they are also cheap items, most of these are less than $10, with negligible quality in most cases. While I won’t cover all the accessories in the kit I’ll hit a few of the frequently asked ones and provide alternative options. While the recommended options might be a bit more expensive the quality is worth the price to get good items the first time.

Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Nikon 70-300 F/4-5.6 AF LensThe big extra in this kit that doesn't fit is the Nikon 70-300 AF lens. The seller did list all the camera bodies that did and didn't auto focus with this lens, they just didn't mention the D5300 isn't one of them. Having no auto focus for this telephoto would be a bit of a pain and isn't something a first time buyer is going to know. $159 lens by itself so with the older kit lens above and a grey market body it’s not hard to fit it under the budget of an authorized D5300 price.
Nikon 55-300mm AF-S Amazon | B&HCanon EF-S 55-250 STM Amazon | B&H
UV Filter UV FilterUnless you live in a desert or dealing with touchy kids you don’t need a UV filter  just get a hood for your lens. The majority of these filters in kits are such low quality that it will affect the quality of your photos because you're putting extremely cheap glass in front of your good glass.
Tripod TripodActually my Dad has the exact one from the listing, it came with a spotting scope, not a DSLR. Unless you absolutely have to use this it’s just a pain to use compared to a decent tripod and its plastic build is not something to hold up to much abuse. Unless you're Toby and lose a Tripod leg getting a good tripod is something that's going to last you through multiple camera bodies and many years of work. For a decent budget tripod get the Dolica 62”, it might cost more in the short term but long term it works better and you don’t have to worry about it breaking. Later on when you get more established and want something a bit more light & portable for hiking and moving about you can always pick up a MeFoto travel tripod.
Dolica 62” Proline Tripod (Review) AmazonMeFoto Travel Tripod (Review) Amazon | B&H
32GBTranscend Memory CardIf you buy a kit from Amazon or B&H depending on their current sales they sometimes throw in a Sandisk card for free. Unfortunately the listing doesn't say particularly what you get so it’s up to them, as for reviews its a grab bag situation, our reader received a non listed generic and Sony. If you need to pick any up you’re better off getting a couple 16-32GB cards over one 64GB card so not all your photos are in one basket.
Sandisk Extreme 16GB Amazon | B&HSandisk Extreme 32GB Amazon | B&H
Zeikos ZE-CA48B Deluxe BagBower SCB1350 Padded Cases and BackpacksBags are definitely one of those things that is up to the person. Like the SD card above both Amazon and B&H among others occasionally offer a free bag of better quality. While these kit bags would certainly work there are much better options available, just make sure to get one with a bit of extra room for additional gear purchases or you've got to go bag shopping all over again.

admin-ajax FlashIf you're starting out and it’s available use the built in flash until you get a grip on how to use the camera. At that point, get a Yongnuo flash, a good product the first time saves money in the long run. Otherwise spend more money and get the manufacturer brand which does the same thing for twice the cost. This one in the kit is a $13.95 flash and for the reviews it has in a sense standing outside with a flashlight duct taped to the top of the camera might be preferable.
41Flh0UW55L._SL1000_ Cleaning AccessoriesDespite everything your lens can take a lot of abuse and even crack slightly without damaging your photos quality so you don’t need a lot of cleaning supplies. A lens wipe and cleaning solution work well, or if you're Toby a shirt. For dust inside the camera a rocket blower is handy to get it out but not needed right immediately.

SD Card Reader Card ReaderYou can’t really complain about a free card reader but you do have to be iffy about quality as the listed unit is not even USB 2.0 making your card load at a snails pace. While they all do the same basic function some card readers do have a tendency to wear out a SD faster than others so its better to choose a quality reader.
Transcend USB 3.0 Card Reader Amazon | B&H
Macro Filters Close-up lenses “Macro on the cheap” While we do get Macro questions quite frequently, and yes technically these would work, just like the cheap UV filter you are putting more poor quality glass in front of the lens. If you're starting out in photography managing what you have and learning to use the camera properly is better than playing with gimmicks. If you're dead set on going macro checking out Toby’s macro photography options below is your best bet.
Nikon Battery BatteryWhile not included in this seller’s kit it’s recommended you get an extra battery. For every battery you do get quite a few shots but having more than one as a backup or a long trip is a good investment. In colder climates especially the battery will die faster as the cold will sap the battery life. Fortunately for us 3rd party battery makers have stepped in so we’re not paying $40 for a battery.

The best answer is do your homework to get a authorized, warrantied camera, and if you get stuck send us a message on Facebook as we are happy to help. In this case it comes down to who are you buying the camera from and are you getting what you think you are paying for in the sale versus what actually arrives. Grey market can potentially mean a good sale but it creates issues down the road for getting service or repairs from the manufacturer. When it comes to accessories even small $10 items add up, when there are 18 of those and another lens yet the price is the same or lower than Amazon it’s time to ask questions. While this deal in particular wasn't a complete loss, it wasn't what the person asked for, which is shady at best and a warning for others. As for our reader, everything in the listing came in as described which is what he expected after messaging our page. Everything works and now he's picking up the basics but if I wrote this a bit earlier they probably would have went a different route.

Buy from an authorized dealer, you get a proper warrantied camera from a reputable source while supporting future Digital Photo Recommendations work in the process.B&H | Amazon | AdoramaPhotorec.tv DSLR sales page

Nikon D7200 Announced & My Thoughts

Nikon has announced the Nikon D7200 mid-level APS-C sensor camera.

Nikon D7200What you need to know about the Nikon D7200:

  • Body is nearly identical to the D7100, slight grip redesign similar to D750 and D5500

Rumors about articulating touch screen are FALSE.Nikon D7200Nikon D7200Nikon D7200 My quick thoughts on the Nikon D7200I was a fan of the D7100, it provides excellent manual controls and very good quality at a solid price. The value of the camera was high. I, like many photographers, were frustrated with the tiny buffer that really kept this camera from shining, it certainly made sports and wildlife photographers look for alternatives. It looks like they have addressed that issue and I expect this camera to perform well and sell well.Nikon D7100 and D7200 - Can you tell the difference?[vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"]D7200 Back[/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"]D7100 Back[/vc_column][/vc_row]
