NIkon announced a new version of the D810, the D810a tuned/tweaked for astronomy photography and a D750 bundled with a slew of lenses and accessories useful for videographers.

Nikon D810a for those with stars in their eyes

Nikon D810a

A modified version of the D810 and features an optical IR cut filter for photographing distant nebulae and other astronomical phenomena with utmost clarity and color accuracy. By updating the D810’s design with a dedicated filter to pass H-alpha (656.28nm) wavelengths, the D810A is able to depict nebulae and other subjects without unwanted infrared contamination for greater color neutrality. Benefitting this adjustment to the sensor filtration, this specialized DSLR also features an expanded shutter speed range and new M* exposure mode for more accurate exposure times up to 15 minutes, as well as a Virtual Live View Exposure Preview feature to aid in clear focus and composition confirmation when making such long exposures.

NOTE: The modified sensor makes this camera unsuitable for normal photography.   Canon also offers the 60Da for Astrophotography. The 60 of course does not offer 36MP of the D810 but it is very affordable at this time.

Yesterday I posted a list of recent sundance films and the cameras they were shot with. Nikon was absent from that list. In the last few years Nikon’s DSLRs have offered a much better experience for videographers and they continue to improve their offering with bundles like this.

The Stars above Vis Harbor. I loved the town of Vis and the island of Vis - lovely quiet little place off the coast of Croatia. See more of it including an animation of this star stacking AND one angry hooded crow that really wanted to take out my drone! http://photorec.tv/croatia Captured with the #GH5 and 12-60 f/2.8-4 Lens | 41 exposures of 60 seconds in length - done in camera - the GH5 allows up to 60 second shutter speeds. Nifty!
