Alternative Cameras –

Taking the features that I love about the Sony –

  • Excellent sensor with fantastic low light performance
  • Articulating LCD
  • Shoots 4k video that looks gorgeous
  • In body image stabilization useful for hand-held video and low light photography
  • Fast and accurate AF system
  • EVF
  • Smaller and Lighter (Unless I am packing the adapter and my Canon glass)

As I said in the review – it is difficult to find another camera that does all of this so well but it is expensive and lenses are relatively expensive too*  So if you are willing to sacrifice a feature or two I have some suggestions.

Nikon D750 (My review)

  • Articulating Screen
  • Very good Sony sensor inside
  • Good video quality (not 4K though)
  • Great price with lots of affordable Nikon lenses to choose from
  • Additional Strength – Awesome battery life

Buy the Nikon D750 from B&H Photo for $1,996.95

Buy a stabilized lens for your Nikon D750

Panasonic GH4 (My review)

  • Articulating touch screen
  • Excellent 4k video in good light
  • Fantastic battery life
  • Small and MFT lenses are tiny
  • Affordable

Buy the Panasonic GH4 from B&H Photo for $1,397.99 ($100 instant savings)

Sony a7II (My Review)

  • 1/2 the price of the Sony A7R II but still offers
    • Excellent sensor
    • In body image stabilization
    • Big, bright viewfinder
    • The grip and in hand-feel I like with the A7RII (the bodies are identical)

Buy the Sony a7II from B&H Photo for $1,698.00 ($100 instant savings)

  1. Hi Sir, How are you?

Sir, I have decided to purchase Sony A7R II. I think this camera is great. Your review for this camera is amazing. Sir, I have got a great commercial wedding project. The wedding program is at night. Can you please recommend a good flash system for shooting a wedding. Please don’t forget to recommend lenses one should have to shoot a wedding.

  2. Hi, I watched thoroughly many of your reviews, especially about event/wedding video and photography. Really appreciate your practical approach. For last two years I used to use C100 with 5DM3 and D800 for landscape and interiors. Now, after selling C100, I’m looking intensively for new gear. As I do both jobs: event/wedding photography and videography, I would prefer more universal camera, suitable for both tasks. I was considering Sony A7SII/A7RII for a while (also GH4) but all these, seem to be artificial limbs, somewhat unprofessional. Now I lean towards 1DC, as it seems to be nearly perfect photo and video camera in one pack. “Nearly” because of lack of ND filter and articulated screen, which was highly useful on C100.
What is your opinion about this camera? Can we expect any review of 1DC? Is it any specific reason, stopping you from buying one (especially now, after 1/3 price drop)?

    • Hi Robert,

I don’t have a very high opinion about this camera – it has sold terribly (hence the serious price drop) and Canon has hinted that the line will not be continued. Not that any of that makes it a less desirable camera but when you look at the price and compare vs the Sony – you get loads more for your money, even after the price drop. I would take a second look at the A7RII or the A7SII (or both – you can buy both for the price of one 1DC! These are two cameras that give you amazing image AND video quality – excellent focus for video work and have a decent selection of very sharp lenses and via the metabones the A7RII works well with canon glass too. I am happy to chat more and help you figure out which is best. –T
