Canon has officially announced the EOS R5 Canon’s Flagship Mirrorless. Oops, correction - they have officially announced the development of the R5  - That means they haven’t released the full specs but here is what we know so far - and it looks good - really good!

Here are the facts about the new EOS R5

  • Newly Designed CMOS Sensor - no megapixel specs provided yet but because of the 8k video it is likely that the sensor is somewhere in the 40-45mp range. No word on dynamic range improvements - an area with Canon has generally lagged behind Nikon and Sony.

  • In-camera image stabilization - This is where the sensor is stabilized. Nikon and Sony offer this in their full-frame mirrorless cameras and Canon looked a bit silly with the EOS R releases not providing IBIS. The EOS R5 looks to correct that and Canon states that IBIS will work with lens IS to provide additional stabilization - this could be significant and similar to the way the Olympus OMD EM1 Mark II and III system works giving you some incredible stabilization.

  • 20fps continuous shooting (silent shutter/ electronic shutter) - This is close to on par with the Sony a9 but what we need to know is how fast will the sensor readout- will there be rolling shutter in still photos for moving subjects, an issue that plagues most mirrorless on the market today.  We also need to know about the autofocus system. With firmware updates, the EOS R has certainly improved when I reviewed it but it still is not my first choice for sports or fast action like birds in flight. How much of an improvement will we see - enough to support reliable AF tracking of moving subjects at 20 fps? I doubt it!

  • 12fps continuous shooting with the mechanical shutter. This is fast, for comparison the EOS R does 8fps but it drops to just 5fps with continuous AF. This reality check is probably going to be true with the R5 as well though maybe without such a significant drop.

  • 8K video - This is one of those - can’t quite believe it specs. This is a huge jump. Here is exactly what Canon said in their press release “ From a video perspective, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will prepare videographers for the future of movie-making- capturing 8K footage today allows for even higher-quality 4K productions in addition to the ability to extract high-resolution still images from the video footage.”  I have to believe there is some marketing stretching of the truth here. Could it be just time-lapse footage at 8k as some have suggested and what Nikon did when marketing the D850? Or could it do 8k but it is cropped and AF is disabled… Maybe it will only support 8k recorded externally? What do you all think? Leave those thoughts in the comments. And we have no word on formats or bit rates for video yet.

  • Dual memory card slots - no word on the type. SD cards or CF express?

  • Canon has announced that this camera will support direct wireless uploading to a new cloud image sync service launching in April

That is all of the facts but we have a really good look at the body that can provide a few more details and raises a few more questions -  On the front, we have what is probably an assignable function button ( this is not on the Eos R) and we have what looks like a little rubber flap covering a port?  Leave your educated guesses in the comments below.

We move around the side and see all the standard ports labeled including a flash sync port which is not on the EOS R. And the position of the mic and headphone jack is something we have seen before to support - A FULL ARTICULATED SCREEN! Wow -Canon is calling this a flagship and we have a fully articulated screen - this is BIG!   This makes me happy and you know what else makes me happy - there is no multi-function bar. It just wasn’t a great design - instead, there is a standard joystick and a fairly typical Canon layout on the back. On top is the small settings display and ditching the mode dial for a button dial combo to switch mode or settings.

Fully articulated screen on a flagship body!

The camera will be shown CP+ at the end of February and WPPI in March.  In both of those cases, it might be behind glass… Officially released in July is the rumor.

The big questions for me - The speed and reliability of the AF system. I reviewed the 61MP Sony a7RIV in Mongolia last year and the AF system is blazing fast and keeps up with the 10fps.  I am also curious to see what this 8K really means - I am suspicious that the marketing folks stretched this. And finally price, Canon is calling this a flagship camera, these specs are impressive and Canon has not been known for beating competitors on price - at least at release. My guess is body only is at least $3499 and if the specs are closer to the truth I think $4299 is possible. I would love to know your thoughts   - Leave those in the comments below along with any additional thoughts you want to share.

Canon also announced The T8i (minor updates to T7i it can do 4k but no dual pixel AF when recording 4k)  They also announced two RF extenders the 1.4 and 2x and a 100-500 f/4.5 to 7.1 RF lens and mentioned that they will release a total of 9 RF lenses in 2020!  Clearly, Canon is now all-in on mirrorless
