Samsung NX1 Discontinued at B&H

We have seen the signs, heard the rumors and now here in the US at B&H Photo Store- the NX1 with Lens is listed as discontinued.  It is clear this line of cameras from Samsung is completely dead and done. A real shame - I really liked the NX1 as a camera though I did worry about the ecosystem.   I still miss it's beautiful OLED screen and smart features like over wifi firmware updates. No more NX1They do still have stock of Body Only models - not sure how long that will last but the price is decent. $1099 Slightly related - Amazon's deal of the day is the older NX3000. For $399 you get the camera, 20-50 and 50-200 lens. This is an excellent deal - just think of this as a point and shoot and it's a fantastic deal with good wifi connectivity and even a cheap tiny prime, 30mm f/2.0 lens you can add for additional portability. The NX3000 is a 20MP APS-C camera that does very well in low light. flip up touchscreen and the ability to take 3D photos (when using a 3D lens) round out the features.Samsung NX300 - Super deal

Samsung NX1 Review, the BEST Mirrorless Camera?

After spending a few weeks with the Samsung NX1 and 16-50 f2-f2.8 lens I am ready to share my review.Samsung NX1 Video Review: More NX1 CoverageSamsung NX1 Pros:

  • 28MP Sensor - provides excellent resolution, detail and clean high ISO images(some of the best I have seen from any crop sensor camera)
  • 15 FPS - The fastest of any camera in this price range and class
  • Excellent Auto focus system - 205 Phase Detection points. I was very impressed with the speed and reliability of focus from this camera.
  • 4k video looks gorgeous and the H.265 compression keeps the file sizes reasonable.
  • Serious video features including 120fps for slow mo
  • Wifi, Bluetooth and NFC provide this camera with multiple remote control and wireless image options.
  • Well built weather sealed magnesium alloy body
  • Articulating touchscreen is responsive and well designed - a step above other touchscreens currently on the market.
  • Top Screen LCD for quick glance at your setings
  • Nicely implemented time lapse options - produce video or still images in camera
  • USB Charging (bring a RavPower battery with you and you can charge the camera anywhere, anytime)

Samsung NX1 Cons:

  • Lens Ecosystem - Limited, no zooms above 300mm and only a few professional level prime lenses. (see my recommended lenses)
  • H.265 Support is limited and requires lengthy transcoding options for editing (this should change soon)
  • I am frustrated that there is still no way to remove AF from the shutter button, limiting the usefulness of the AF-ON button for back button focus.
  • Size - Although the NX1 is smaller than most DSLRS it is larger than most mirrorless cameras and you won't see much size, weight savings if you went with the NX system.
  • Cost - Body only the NX1 is a reasonable $1499 - expensive yes but this camera combines the best of several other classes of cameras.  When you start to add lenses, like the fantastic 16-50 f2-f2.8 you end up paying nearly $3,000 and that is an expensive system that still feels limiting for some.

How do they manage a 40MP shot from a 16MP Sensor? The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II takes high-resolution imaging to a whole new level. In addition to the exceptional 16-megapixel stills you’ve come to expect from OM-D, the E-M5 Mark II captures 40-megapixel images*2 using an innovative pixel-shift technique that is facilitated by the voice-coil motor IS unit. The 40-Megapixel High-Res Shot mode captures eight sequential images, moving the sensor by 0.5-pixel steps between each shot. Then, the E-M5 Mark II compiles those images to produce a super-high resolution shot that rivals those captured with a 40-megapixel full-frame camera.Preorder at B&H Photo- $1099 (body only)Other Olympus News - EM-1 Owners will soon be able to update to 3.0 firmware giving you 9 fps, better continuous tracking and ability to use smartphone to control video. Samsung NX1 - Speed Demon? Mirrorless Sports Photographers Dream?

I haven't talked about Samsung much lately- they seem to be producing quality cameras but not having received a single question about their cameras from any of my readers and viewers means I don't spend my limited time researching and reviewing cameras that no one is asking about. That might change with this latest release - it certainly has grabbed some headlines with 15FPS, 205 phase detect AF points, 153 of which are cross-type, covering 90% of the frame and the ability to record 4K video. Oh it has those current features - touchscreen and NFC/Wifi that help to make the 7D Mark II (before it is even officially released) look a little shabby. Of course Canon has a significantly greater lens selection and ecosystem but with this NX1 being packed full of features I am willing to bet more than a few photographers will make the "sacrifice." I will have a full review of this camera soon. Follow on Facebook, Youtube and my Newsletter to stay subscribed. Here are the photos and the full specs of the new Samsung NX1

  • New 28MP Back Side Illuminated APS-C Sensor
  • The NX AF System III on the NX1 is supported by 205 phase detect auto focus points
  • NX1 can shoot at up to 15 FPS at full resolution
  • Captures UHD/4k video to SD card or can output it via HDMI port
  • OLED EVF has a lag time of 5ms, fast enough to be undetectable to the human eye.
  • Incorporates the newest Wi-Fi standard, IEEE802.11ac
  • The body is magnesium alloy; water and dust sealed.

The Samsung NX1 will be available mid-October for $1500. A kit with the Samsung 16-50mm f/2.8 and a vertical battery grip will also be available for $2800.Preorder The Samsung NX1 from Amazon | B&H Screenshot 2014-09-15 07.46.25TouchscreenArticulating!
