Left a bit to interpretation this could be something old like an abandoned house, an old rusty car, or a leftover item like a random shoe that’s been left to age in the sun.

Tips

Just don’t randomly buy a hard drive to throw photos on and call it a day. As Seagate is being hit with a class action suit over its faulty 3tb drives make sure you buy a reliable brand for storing those photos. If you're going to buy a drive, Western Digital and HGST (formerly Hitachi) are the best brands to get in terms of reliability.  Even now you can get Western Digital USB 3.0 external drives that will run RAID which is a system to mirror your data over multiple hard drives in case one of them fail.

Tip of the Day - Black Backgrounds With FlashIMG_3501

With Toby’s first in a series of flash tutorials out here’s a tip for a clean portrait shot. Normally the goal when taking a flash photo is to expose the photo so that the flash lighting works well with your subject. By maxing out your sync speed and aperture you can use a low ISO to get a black background. Since without the flash exposing the photo would have been pure black adding it only exposes what it hits. Try it out to make a few portrait photos with a black background. A umbrella does help even out the light and make for softer transitions but is not required for it to work.

PhotoPlus Convention in NYCFrom Jon Hooper:i think your perspective on the future is pretty narrow. You might want to google Ray Kurzweil on the exponential nature of technology development--- 30 years is a long time. We are on the verge of an explosion in computational photography right now. Light, Lytro and various array camera tech will obsolete DSLR's in 5-7 years. In the labs we already have sensors where each pixel is a LIDAR antenna.  Meta material researchers have already demonstrated flat lenses which can give us perfect and variable refraction at any angle using nano gratings (no more giant lenses and more light reaching the sensors).  Imagine visual sensors so cheap they are in everything, imagine them with a billion times the compute power of todays smartphones, imagine them stitching together a continuous 3D experience that is live broadcast on the web.  That is where we are going ... photography as we know it will be an anachronism.

Shooting Fall Foilage- tips and tricksShooting fall color:Shoot at golden hour. That will make the colors in the leaves appear warmer and more intense.Rainy days are also great for photographing foliage: Rain saturates colors.Don’t just shoot the foliage itself. Observe how it interacts with its environment. Be it by framing a house or fallen leaves covering a road, moving in the wind. Focusing on how the day feels and trying to capture that helps to convey a story.Focus on small details. The Super Blood Moon is ComingSept 27-28The Night of September 27-28 will be the best blood moon of the year as its also a super moon. Those on the east coast, south america, and western Europe will have the best chance at seeing the blood moon. This one is a little bit easier to see at 10:51 P.M. EDT unlike my photo here which was at 3 A.M. Remember after you get your Blood moon photos it is a good moment to shoot the stars as well as there is very little light pollution from the moon.To line up your shot before the event I suggest using the program Stellarium, a virtual planetarium for your computer. After you set your location you can get a precise angle where the moon is going to pass through.  (http://www.stellarium.org)Need help shooting the moon? Check out Toby's tips in Super Moon? Tip of the Day - Take Notes

FN02_RULED_paperA good habit to get into today is taking notes, it may seem a bit silly at first but you will be better for it.  While there is that magical 1% that can pull a photo out of nothing with natural talent for the rest of us we need experience and notes to fall back on. Amateurs all the way to pros keep notes because you can’t keep 100% of everything in your head. A small memo book like field notes is great for taking with you on the go and fits conveniently in a camera bag. In conjunction with Evernote, an online notebook, you can keep your digital notes backed up and access them through a phone or tablet. A memo book can keep quick notes, and important info if your phone dies, while Evernote can backup the info and hold notes and photos that wouldn’t translate well to paper. Notes do pay off and just like homework the information will pay off later:FN-02_angle_ruled
