  • Live view focus and AI-Servo is almost as fast and smooth as the 70D, very good!
  • Higher ISO images are quite good, I don't think they are as good as Nikon D5500 but close
  • Having the small dial on the back for aperture and exposure adjustments is a nice touch - it is small but quite useful.
  • I wish you could adjust exposure while still using AUTO ISO.
  • Touchscreen is nice and responsive
  • The focus select mode button is a little random stuck up on top- luckily they provide a custom setting to avoid needing to use it.
    • Custom Functions(C.fn) > Page 5 C.fnIII: Autofocus/Drive AF Selection Area Selection Method Set to 1.  This lets you press the AF select button on the back corner of the camera and then rotate main dial (top dial) to change the AF mode.  You have three options Manual Selection 1pt, Manual Selection Zone AF, Auto Selection: 19pt.

T6s vs T6i vs 70D

Update Nov 24, 2015: Canon 70D Savings this week only - Click here for more detailsCanon 70D vs Canon T6s 760D

Canon T6s(760D) vs the Canon 70D

Canon 70D offers the following benefits:

  • Dual Pixel AF system- Faster and more competent focusing system for video or live view
  • Additional manual controls (Af mode, Drive mode and Dedicated AF-on button)
  • Weather sealing
  • 7 fps vs 5fps in T6s
  • Small, medium and full size raw. T6s only allows full size raw images. Having smaller sizes is nice for shooting time lapse.
  • Pentaprism viewfinder (larger and brighter view)
  • 1/8000 top shutter speed (1/4000 in T6s)
  • 1/250 flash sync (1/200 in T6s)
  • Micro focus adjustments possible with 70D - these let you correct for AF issues with lenses getting sharper images
  • Double the battery life. (920 shots vs 440 in T6s)

Image & Video Quality

  • How improved is the new Canon T6s 24MP sensor vs the 70D 20MP sensor?
    • ANSWER - PHOTOS: They are virtually the same, resolution difference is negligible and in my testing low light image quality is nearly identical, sometimes the 70D provides slightly better results. VIDEO: Similar results - 70D provides almost identical video quality.
  • *What is the focus speed of the Hybrid CMOS III system like vs the excellent Dual Pixel AF of the 70D?
    • ANSWER - The updates to live view are noticeable - the camera is faster and smoother when focusing. Still not quite the speed of the Canon 70D and the 70D still does better with non STM lenses.

Side by side video and photo samples coming soon. Canon T6s (760d)  offers the following benefits:

  • HDR Video and Miniature movie mode (not serious benefits but something that the T6s offers that the 70D does not offer.
  • Smaller & lighter - there isn't a big difference but it is noticeable.
  • Cheaper

Thoughts on the T6i vs T6s

Both cameras share the exact same sensor and produce exactly the same image.  They also share the same focusing system with the T6s providing AF Servo in live view allowing you to track and keep in focus a subject when shooting stills with live view.No dual pixel AF (like 70D) in either camera but AF is improved, Canon reports that the performance of Hybrid CMOS AF III approaches that of Dual Pixel CMOS AF and I found this to be true in my testing. Focus is faster and the cameras do better with non STM lenses in live view / video. Both offer a silent shooting mode and flicker detection. The big difference between the T6i and the T6s is the top LCD and rear dial – this gives you better manual control and at a glance access to your current settings, again helpful for shooting manual or anytime when you really care about your settings and gives the camera just a little more room for the enthusiast photographer to grow.  Additional benefits of the T6s include horizontal level guide, HDR video, digital zoom and miniature movie mode. The rear dial and top LCD alone are worth the difference in price if you desire a more professional feel in this size camera. The T6s (760D) offers the following benefits

  • Top LCD
  • Rear command dial
  • Horizontal guide
  • Proximity sensor (turns LCD screen off when you bring your eye to the view finder)
  • AF Servo in live view
  • Movie-mode capabilities HDR Video and Miniature movie mode
  • Digital Zoom during video (see example)

Press release:CANON U.S.A. ANNOUNCES NEW EOS REBEL DSLR CAMERAS FEATURING 24.2 MEGAPIXELS AND WIRELESS FUNCTIONALITYThe new EOS Rebel T6s and EOS Rebel T6i1 DSLR cameras combine affordability with workhorse imaging features and functionalityMELVILLE, N.Y., February 5, 2015 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the addition of two new DSLR cameras to its popular EOS Rebel lineup: the EOS Rebel T6s Digital SLR camera, and the EOS Rebel T6i Digital SLR camera. Featuring a newly developed 24.2 megapixel Canon CMOS imaging sensor, both cameras deliver the highest resolution available amongst EOS models with an APS-C format sensor. Additionally, the cameras feature built-in Wi-Fi® and NFC™ capabilities – a first for the Canon EOS Rebel system – making snapping and sharing high-quality, treasured images seamless.“The Canon EOS Rebel series is one of the most popular lines of DSLR cameras on the market, and we are proud to continue to innovate and upgrade this line with features such as wireless connectivity and improved image capture capabilities,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “As the popularity of this line grows with consumers, we’re excited to launch the EOS Rebel T6s as our new flagship camera in the Rebel line, as well as have another budget-conscious offering in the line with the Rebel T6i.”With multiple features most commonly found in advanced amateur cameras, the EOS Rebel T6s is designed for photography enthusiasts, or those who are already experienced with entry-level cameras who want to take high-quality photos and videos, and look for more advanced features and functions. For more casual photography needs, or for users looking to purchase their first DSLR camera, the EOS Rebel T6i camera prioritizes affordability, without sacrificing basic SLR performance attributes like quick shutter response, and compatibility with Canon’s impressive line of interchangeable lenses and accessories.Outstanding Image Capture FeaturesThe new EOS Rebel cameras have an extensive ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) to accommodate shooting situations ranging from bright sunny days at the beach to dimly lit indoor dance recitals. The high-performance DIGIC 6 image processor helps provide outstanding image quality and speed, so pictures are clear and sharp.Building on the image capture functionality of their predecessors, the EOS Rebel T6s and EOS Rebel T6i cameras feature Canon’s new Hybrid CMOS AF III image sensor-embedded autofocus system, which allows for high levels of speed and accuracy when capturing Full HD video or high-resolution photos in Live View. This is particularly useful when capturing children playing sports, or animals in the wild, when it’s imperative to get the shot at the exact moment action is happening. Helping photographers capture those special moments, the cameras have high-speed continuous shooting up to five frames-per-second (fps). For photographers who prefer to compose their images through a viewfinder, the new EOS Rebel T6s and EOS Rebel T6i cameras have a 19-point all cross-type AF system that allows for superb autofocus, as well as focus area selection modes.Brand-new to the EOS Rebel line, the cameras feature built-in wireless capabilities, which allow users to wirelessly transfer images and videos with ease to compatible smartphones and tablets through Canon’s newly updated and free Camera Connect app.2 Images and videos can also be shared wirelessly to a wide range of popular social networking sites through Canon iMAGE GATEWAY. 3 The camera’s built-in NFC (Near Field Communication)4 allows quick and simple pairing to a compatible Android device, or devices that support NFC like the new Canon Connect Station CS100 photo and video storage and sharing device. The built-in Wi-Fi functionality also allows users to wirelessly print their images to any compatible printer, like the PIXMA MG7520 or PIXMA iP8720.With an intuitive design that allows for an optimal photographic experience, the new EOS Rebel cameras have a three-inch Vari-Angle Touch Screen Clear View LCD monitor with approximately 1,040,000 dots. This design enables flexible positioning for high or low framed shots, as well as clear viewing even when outdoors in the sunlight. Additionally, the cameras feature the latest version of Canon’s EOS scene analysis system, which helps photographers capture beautiful images in a wider range of situations by detecting near-infrared light and flickering light sources. Also new to the entire EOS system, both models feature color tone detection, which helps ensure individuals in photographs are properly focused and/or exposed by adjusting both autofocus and exposure metering.Full HD Video CaptureThe EOS Rebel T6s and EOS Rebel T6i cameras feature EOS Movie mode which captures Full HD 1080p resolution video up to 30 fps in MP4 format for high quality shooting and easy movie sharing on select social networking sites. Manual exposure control, digital zoom and an external stereo microphone jack are provided for advanced users using the EOS Rebel T6s.Expanded Creative FunctionalityAllowing for full creative control, the new EOS Rebel cameras offer creative filters available as presets for photos and movies. These filters can be displayed in real time during Live View shooting, providing an easy way for users to enhance their creative work. Users can further expand their artistic abilities right from the camera with Creative Filters such as Fisheye Effect, Toy Camera Effect and Monochrome mode. Fisheye Effect gives images a panoramic look and feel, Toy Camera Effect adds a grainy look to soften photos, illustrating a vintage appearance and with Monochrome mode, photos can either have black-and-white, blue or sepia tones, to display a more classic appearance.Advanced Features & CapabilitiesFor photographers who desire more advanced features, the EOS Rebel T6s is the first EOS Rebel class DSLR camera to feature a top LCD panel, Quick Control Dial, Horizontal Level and built-in HDR movie capabilities. The new camera is also the first model in the EOS Rebel series to feature Servo AF in Live View, allowing continuous tracking of moving subjects during burst mode shooting sequences.AvailabilityThe EOS Rebel T6s Digital SLR camera and EOS Rebel T6i Digital SLR camera are scheduled to be available at the end of April 2015. Nikon D7200 Announced & My Thoughts

Nikon has announced the Nikon D7200 mid-level APS-C sensor camera.

Nikon D7200What you need to know about the Nikon D7200:

  • Body is nearly identical to the D7100, slight grip redesign similar to D750 and D5500
  • 24MP sensor (probably the same as in the D5500 - See my review of the D5500)
  • No Optical Low-Pass Filter (OLPF)

  • 6 FPS
  • Better/deeper buffer (allows more continuous shots before you see a slowdown. D7100 had a significantly smaller buffer.

  • 1080/60p ONLY in 1.3x crop mode
  • WiFi and NFC (NFC is a first for Nikon)
  • Better battery life, 160 more shots per charge vs D7100

Rumors about articulating touch screen are FALSE.Nikon D7200Nikon D7200Nikon D7200 My quick thoughts on the Nikon D7200I was a fan of the D7100, it provides excellent manual controls and very good quality at a solid price. The value of the camera was high. I, like many photographers, were frustrated with the tiny buffer that really kept this camera from shining, it certainly made sports and wildlife photographers look for alternatives. It looks like they have addressed that issue and I expect this camera to perform well and sell well.Nikon D7100 and D7200 - Can you tell the difference?[vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"]D7200 Back[/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"]D7100 Back[/vc_column][/vc_row]

Nikon D5500 Review (vs D5300, D7100, Canon T5i and more)

My hands-on video review of the Nikon D5500

NOTE: NIKON REBATES END 3/28/15 & include the D5500/D5300

Nikon D5500 vs Nikon D5300 - Differences Explained Simply

D5300 vs D5500 - Top ChangesBoth D5500 and D5300 offer:

  • 24MP APS-C CMOS Sensors
  • Expeed 4 Processors
  • 39-point AF system, 9 cross-type points (higher accuracy points clustered around the middle)
  • ISO 100-25,600
  • 5 frames per second
  • HD 1080 video at 60p (10 minute recording limit, 20 minutes at 30p)
  • Fully articulating screen
  • Wifi

D5500 with 18-55  The D5500 offers/Advantages over the D5300:

  • A redesigned 24MP processor- I saw slight improvements in image quality at higher ISOs
  • Proximity Sensor (turns LCD off when you bring camera to your eye- helps with battery life too)
  • Smart Touch Screen - acts as a 3rd function wheel when your eye is up to viewfinder
  • Quiet shutter option - Mirror flipping down is just delayed - not a big difference in sound
  • Flat profile for video
  • Fine control over settings in Picture profiles (1/4 adjustments)
  • Slimmer and lighter, under 1lb
  • Redesign deep grip
  • Greater battery life (820 shots CIPA)
  • Additional Effects: Super Vivid, Pop and Photo IllustrationD5300 with 18-55

The D5300 offers/Advantages over the D5500:

My Thoughts on the D5300 vs D5500The primary advantages of D5500 are the touchscreen, making the camera more user friendly and the slimmer and lightweight design.  Increased image quality at the higher ISOs is a nice bonus.  If you are a beginner this is a great way to ease into a DSLR with a camera that does provide room to grow as a photographer or is ready to be left on AUTO and provide you with excellent photos.

Nikon D5500 vs the Canon T5i and Canon T6i/T6s

Watch my preview on the Canon T6i/T6s

760D and 750D - Why?

DPReview has an opinion piece on Canon's decision to run two very similar models of Rebels that differ in price by just 8%.  Read the article The gist of the article -

  • The lower end, T6i gives the big box retailers a cheaper camera to sell in large volume.
  • The T6s will sell better at the camera stores where employees will have an easier time explaining why the top LCD and other features make it worth spending more and thus make a better margin per camera

It is an interesting idea but I would love to see some numbers about these little camera shops and how much inventory they actually move compared to something like Amazon or B&H Photo. I suspect it is small. I know my local shop struggles to carry many Canon DSLRs as they force shp owners to buy larger amount of inventory than Nikon or Pentax.I do agree that the T6s is a clear winner between these two and in my mind worth the extra money.  Beyond the top LCD you get manual movie mode, Digital zoom in movie mode,  Servo AF in live view and the eye sensor.  See my complete write up on the T6i and T6s for more information. What are your thoughts? Any reason to go with the T6i? The difference is about the cost of the 50mm f/1.8 lens

Pentax K-S2 and Updated 18-50 Announced

Ricoh has announced a new Pentax DSLR! The Pentax K-S2 is not the long rumored full frame but another in their line of excellent APS-C sized sensors and this one does NOT have the blinking lights in the grip we made fun of a few podcasts ago. Pentax K-S2Screenshot 2015-02-09 17.30.32Inside you have

  • Wi-Fi with NFC - a first in the Pentax K-series
  • 11-point SAFOX X AF module offering 9 cross-type points
  • In-body Shake Reduction
  • No AA Filter (offers AA simulation feature)

Outside

  • Weather sealed Construction
  • Dual dial control
  • Selfie button
  • No Blinking lights on the grip ;)

The Pentax K-S2 will be available in March for $799.95with smc Pentax-DA L 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR kit zoom.Pentax is also release an updated kit lens the PENTAX DA 18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE LensMouseover to see the 18-50 extended.[himage]Screenshot 2015-02-09 17.55.44Screenshot 2015-02-09 17.55.52[/himage]From the press release - The world’s smallest dustproof, weather-resistant digital SLR camera with a variable-angle LCD monitor, wireless LAN and NFC functions, available in multiple colours. My thoughts - Pentax continues to make excellent cameras that offer very good value, the downside is the tiny ecosystem of accessories and gear that may make your experience frustrating.Preorder K-S2 (body only) from B&H Photo VideoPreorder the new 18-50 f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE Lens $296.95 from B&H Photo VideoPreorder K-S2 with 18-50 from B&H Photo VideoPreorder K-S2 with 18-50 and 50-200 from B&H Photo Video

Thoughts on the T6i vs T6s

No dual pixel AF (like 70D) in either camera but Af is improved, Canon reports that the performance of Hybrid CMOS AF III approaches that of Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Both offer a silent shooting mode and flicker detection. And in the silly but fun feature column is miniature movie mode – finally catching up to Nikon. The big difference is the top LCD and rear dial – this gives you better manual control and at a glance access to your current settings, again helpful for shooting manual or anytime when you really care about your settings and gives the camera just a little more professionalism.  Additional benefits of the T6s, additional manual control in video and horizontal level guide. Are these features – worth an extra $100.  I believe so.The T6s (760D) offers the following benefits

  • Top LCD
  • Rear Command Dial
  • HDR Movie Mode
  • Horizontal Guide
  • Proximity sensor (turns LCD screen off when you bring your eye to the view finder)
  • Additional Live view capabilities and movie-mode capabilities (I am still working on figuring out what these are)
  • Digital Zoom during video ^ this may be partially the answer to the bullet above

Canon T6s(760D) vs the Canon 70D

Canon 70D offers the following benefits:

  • Dual Pixel AF system - live view focus on the 70D is fast and accurate*
  • Weather sealing
  • 7 fps vs 5fps in T6s
  • Small, Medium Raw sizes
  • Pentaprism Viewfinder (larger and brighter view)
  • 1/8000 top shutter speed (1/4000 in T6s)
  • 1/250 flash sync (1/200 in T6s)
  • Double the battery life. (900 shots vs 400 in T6s)

Questions that remain -

  • How improved is the 24MP sensor over the 70D 20MP sensor?
  • *What is the focus speed of the Hybrid CMOS III system like vs the excellent Dual Pixel AF of the 70D?

The estimated retail price of the EOS Rebel T6s is $849.99 for the body only, and $1,199.00 bundled with an EF-S 18-135 STM lens. This is basically the same camera as the D5300 minus the GPS and adding in a touch screen.  Nikon has done well with some of the touchscreen features allowing you to setup and control certain aspects of the camera by touching the screen even when your eye is up to the viewfinder.  The best option may be picking your focus point by moving your finger across the screen.

D5500 or D5300?

You can save $200 and pickup the D5300 which will offer identical image quality, only real sacrifice is the touchscreen. With that savings you can buy the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 - a fantastic prime lens that will give you wonderful aperture control and excellent low light images. Why do you want a prime lens? D5500 or D7100 (D7200)

In just hours we should know much more about the D7200. It is rumored to have an articulating screen and will offer, like the D7100 a much more professional camera in both feel and operation. If you dream of professionally shooting the D7XX series gives you much more room to grow as a photographer you just need to pay more and carry around a bigger camera.  If you are just a parent or someone that wants to take nice photos and have your camera with you most of the time, the D5300/D5500 would be my pick.Buy the D7100 from B&H Photo | Adorama | Amazon

New photos from DCIRecent Canon P&S releases and the new connect station from Canon have given us some clues on the new Canon T6i (750D/760D). In a promo video a new DSLR is shown, I have a few screen grabs to share.Screenshot 2015-01-17 18.30.09 copyHere you can see just a corner of the DSLR and if we take a closer lookScreenshot 2015-01-17 18.29.59 copy We see a top LCD and a lock switch. Both items have never before been seen on a xxxD or Rebel series DSLR. This could be very interesting and might mean they are ditching the top dial.  Or maybe the just moved it to the other side similar to the xxD line.  Everything else looks like a Rebel back there and Canon Rumors has confirmed that this is the next Rebel.  Last year I blogged about the T6i and thought that they might go mirrorless, I no longer believe that is true and while I do suspect that at some point in the future the Rebel line will be a mirrorless system it seems to early and Canon has given us no other indication that this will be the switch.Screenshot 2015-01-17 18.30.22Just one more shot of the front - very little to see here as the hands do a spectacular job of hiding anything of interest.  We do know that this next DSLR will work with the connect station from CanonUPDATE  Feb 4, 2015 - Camera will be called T6i/760D Skipping 750D to avoid confusion with Nikon's D750.So the name confusion - Looks like the T6i replacement will be 760D but there will be a 750D that will likely be the T5 replacement (barebones entry level DSLR)

Note: Hybrid CMOS AF III is NOT the same as dual pixel AF.Below are my predictions for this camera before the list above was released.Rumors suggest a release just before the CP+ Show scheduled for mid February. So what DO I think the next rebel specs will be?

  • 20.2 MP Sensor (Same as 70D)
  • Dual Pixel AF system (also same as 70D)
  • Wifi and NFC(for use with Connect Station)
  • 1080p at 60 FPS
  • 9 cross type focus points
  • Digic 6
  • Articulating Touchscreen (sensitivity mode touchscreen similar to Canon Sl1)

Nikon D5500 Announced (Successor to the D5300)

The Nikon D5500 has been announced. (Why not a D5400?)Nikon D5500 camera, Nikkor 300 f/4 and 55-200mm f/4-5.6G lensesScreenshot 2015-01-05 21.55.37 Screenshot 2015-01-05 21.55.22Headline Feature: Articulating Touch Screen ( a first for the Nikon DSLR line)Additional Features:

  • 3.2-inch, approximately 1037K-dot TFT LCD vari-angle monitor
  • 24.2-million pixels, a Nikon DX-format CMOS sensor, and the EXPEED
  • Wifi to smartphone/tablets
  • Slightly smaller body size - world's smallest, lightest, and slimmest digital SLR camera equipped with a vari-angle monitor
  • Additional Scene control and features available for photos AND video

About the touchscreen - "One of eight frequently used camera settings (Focus-point selection, AF-area mode, Aperture, ISO sensitivity, etc.) can be assigned to this function for use with viewfinder shooting, enabling immediate modification of the assigned setting, and achieving practical operation by simply tapping or sliding a finger across the monitor while looking through the viewfinder.""..sliding a finger across the monitor while looking through the viewfinder."Very interesting - I am curious to see how this translates in real world use.The Nikon D5500 will be available in early February, (black and red), in two different kit configurations: alongside the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $999.95 or with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens for $1,199.95 SRP. The Nikon D5500 will also be sold body only for an SRP of $899.95. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR II and AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lenses will also be available in early February for an SRP of $349.95 and $1,999.95, respectively.Preorder from Amazon | B&H Photo & Video (Available Feb 5th in RED or BLACK)B&H D5500 body only $896.95B&H D5500 with 18-55 $996.96B&H D5500 with 18-140 $1196.95

Nikon D5500 vs D5300 (Differences Explained Simply)

It looks like both share the same sensor, same processor and same number/type of focus points. In short do NOT upgrade to this camera from the D5300 and expect any difference in quality of the images.Key differences. D5500 offers a touchscreen, better battery life 820 vs 600 shots and its just a tiny bit smaller/lighter (just 2oz less than the D5300) - Some don't consider a smaller size to be better. From the Nikon Rumors Page - blue outline is the D5500, purple is the D5300Screenshot 2015-01-06 00.26.19They have dropped the GPS (which I wasn't impressed with) but added some additional picture controls and maybe a star trails mode (I am still researching this)

Nikon D5500 vs the Canon T5i

Full post coming soon - for now watch my video of the T5i vs the D5300 and keep in mind the touchscreen should make the D5500 more user friendlyWhen will we see a Canon response to the D5500? When will we see the Canon T6i or 750D? I predict before the end of February

Canon 7D Mark II - Sensor Review

1523_75 mm1-80 sec at f - 8.0ISO 3200Roger Clark at ClarkVision (http://www.clarkvision.com/) has completed his review of the 7D Mark II and found the sensor to be the BEST low light Canon sensor on the market.A few lines from his conclusion-

The data shown here for the Canon 7D Mark II indicate that the camera is operating at near perfect levels for the sensor with lower apparent read noise and impressively low pattern noise compared to all other current Canon cameras tested and better than that in the 7D Mark I. This means that for high signals, noise is dominated by photon statistics. Sensitivity is improved 14% over the 7D Mark 1, and the sensitivity per square micron is the highest that I have measured for any Canon camera to date. The approximately 10x lower thermal dark current is a game changing factor, making this camera the top Canon camera for long exposure low light photography that I have tested. The superb autofocus system, comparable to Canon 1D series pro cameras with 65 autofocus points is another game changing innovation, as the camera is at a price point that is affordable to more people.

Read his full and extremely detailed review at http://www.clarkvision.com/reviews/evaluation-canon-7dii/ This certainly inspires me to head out and take some long exposure shots - something I have not done with the 7D Mark II at this time. 7D Mark II Weather Sealing - Seriously Sealed

Screenshot 2014-11-04 09.23.23I love Roger's posts- he works over at LensRentals and has a great curiosity along with a skeptical nature. He recently heard Canon's claim that the 7D Mark II is 4x as weather sealed as the original. Not one to take such claims at face value Roger dug in and found. .

the Canon 7D Mk II may be the best weather-sealed camera I’ve run across. It’s excellent.

Canon T6i (750D) Rumors and Speculation

Screenshot 2014-10-06 09.28.50Canon has a teaser counting down to the impossible - less than 24 hours as of monday morning.  Doubtful that this is camera related - any major announcements would have happened at Photokina. My experience in the past with Canon's mysterious countdowns and unveiling has always been a let down - sometimes printers, sometimes a new project that has no interest to me- so I refuse to get excited. But, I will keep my eyes and ears open and pass along any info.   This does remind me that we still have no info about the T6i (750D) so I went digging. It has been very quiet regarding the replacement for the Canon T5i- originally released in March of 2013 and offering only a minor upgrade to the T4i- the time for a replacement is due.  There was some speculation that Photokina would be the place and time but that has passed with just the 7D Mark II announcement.   The next show is PhotoPlus at the end of this month but still no credible information and in fact we are starting to hear that maybe nothing until the second quarter of 2015!!  That would make a 24 month release cycle from the T5i which is longer than any previous version and if we count the T4i as the actual release, since the T4i and T5i are nearly identical, we are talking almost three years!! Crazy!  But what might be crazier is the rumour that the T6i will be the first rebel to feature an electronic viewfinder (EVF) This means it won't be a dslr. No mirror box, no optical viewfinder. it will be a MIRRORLESS CAMERA!!T6i Specs (rumoured)

  • Mirrorless Camera
  • 20mp Dual Pixel AF Sensor (updated version of 70D sensor)
  • Digic 6
  • Articulated Touchscreen
  • WiFi

I slapped a T6i on an EOS-M (Canon's currently Mirrorless)Many have said that it is just a matter of time before more and more cameras become mirrorless - the design of a DSLR is ancient but has some advantages - many of those advantages have been erased or at least equalled with the advances of technology.  Dual Pixel focus and Digic 6 should allow this to be a fast performing camera and having access to Canon's huge lens selection is always important.   BUT! I have two questionsWill users looking to upgrade their current camera care that this isn't a DSLR?NO, I doubt many users will care if what they upgrade to has a mirror or EVF.  If it has the Canon logo and decent reviews(they don't even need to be stellar) they will buy when they are looking to upgrade.  I have evidence based on the hundreds of questions I get a week about which camera to upgrade to, many choose Canon despite there being a better option(performance, features and value) from other camera manufacturers. Is it too little too late to join the mirrorless race? This is a bit more difficult to answer- past the point of fashionably late to the party(probably always debated by the one who is actually late) but Canon has the lenses and within the camera space the brand Canon carries a huge amount of weight(see the first question above) . When people start to consider upgrading from their P&S or smart phone cameras many seem to consider Canon and Nikon and not much else.  An argument for "too late" - The Sony a6000(my review) is selling well and right now offers everything that the T6i probably will offer.  By the time the T6i actually comes to market we will probably have an a6100 and I wouldn't be surprised if it offered 4k video. Sony doesn't have the lens selection but they are working on that and with many higher end models photographers buying into the system at the a6000 level there is reason to see hope and room to grow. What about Canon's current mirrorless offering - the EOS-M and EOS-M2(sold in Japan) - The autofocus system isn't snappy enough to set it apart from P&S cameras and more importantly they used a different mount, making the huge lens selection argument null unless you use an adapter- something you can do with the a6000 or many other models.  The EOS-M was a half hearted attempt at the mirrorless market as was the Canon SL1 - the world's smallest DSLR - these were poor bluffs at the mirrorless market and it is time for Canon to go all in on mirrorless. Taking the rebel line mirrorless would be just that - all in!I'd love to know your thoughts. If this is really going to be a Q2 launch - April 2015 at the earliest, too little too late? Always time for Canon? Come back kid (if they aren't even really down yet)?  Leave a comment or sound off on my Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Digital.Photo.Recommendations

Quick Thoughts on the Canon 7D Mark II

There is certainly some disappointment from videographers and some photographers that have been waiting for YEARS for the followup to the much loved Canon 7D.  In some respects it feels that Canon has continued to play it very safe with this release, no 4K, no WiFi or articulating touchscreen when just about every other serious camera released in the last year offers some or all of those features but I think there are two, maybe three reasons why this camera will still sell very well.1) Blisteringly fast FPS with serious autofocus brains at an affordable price- not everyone needs this but we are looking at the most competent focusing system at a price far below the 1Dx's $5000+ price tag.2) It lives in the Canon ecosystem - lenses make these cameras and having access to a huge and varied selection for a camera at this level is important and not to be overlooked.3) This all depends on that redesigned sensor-Canon states in their press release that this is a NEW sensor (not the same as is in the 70D) and I am starting to hear that maybe this provides the best APS-C performance of any sensor to date.  I suspect that might be pushing the truth some but I will reserve judgement until I get my hands on this camera. Now that it is official. What are your thoughts?Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.39 Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.52Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.57Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.03Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.09Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.15

Fuel Your Creative Passion With The Highly Anticipated Canon EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR Camera

New EOS 7D Mark II Camera Provides Captivating Creative Power at an Affordable PriceMELVILLE, N.Y., September 15, 2014 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to introduce the EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera, incorporating professional features and quality in an affordable DSLR. Building upon the proven success of the EOS 7D camera, this new EOS model features a range of "EOS firsts" such as Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors for superb image quality and rapid burst shooting up to 10 frames per second (fps), as well as Canon's first 65-Point* All Cross Type autofocus (AF) system for compositional freedom and accurate, spot-on fast focus. Great for shooting indoor activities such as sporting events, concerts, or weddings, the camera's impressive low-light shooting capabilities along with its up-to-10 fps high-speed shooting can capture a fast-break basketball dunk, a band's encore performance, a bird in flight or wildlife in exceptional quality. In addition, the EOS 7D Mark II is the second EOS DSLR camera to incorporate Canon's innovative Dual Pixel CMOS AF system for rapid and precise focusing of video as well as still images."With more processing power than any other EOS camera available today, the highly anticipated EOS 7D Mark II camera has everything serious photographers have come to expect from Canon's DSLRs and more," said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "And, recognizing that for some, creative expression may expand beyond still photography, we continue to support these creative passions by offering new and innovative Full HD video capabilities, such as second generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology in the EOS 7D Mark II camera as well."

Outstanding Performance

Within the camera's durable magnesium alloy body resides a newly developed 20.2 megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors, safeguarded by enhanced dust and weather resistance to protect the camera. Ideal for shooting in challenging lighting conditions ranging from indoor sports to dimly lit weddings, the camera features a standard ISO range of 100-16000 for both still and video (expandable to ISO 51,600). A new 65-point* All Cross-Type AF system with EV -3 sensitivity at the center point helps deliver sharp focus for still photos even in extreme low-light conditions on subjects with limited visible detail. The EOS 7D Mark II camera also features an enhanced version of Canon's EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF, originally introduced with the EOS-1D X DSLR camera, enabling the camera to recognize subjects based on face and color detection utilizing the new AE system, and can track subjects using all 65 AF points. The camera's improved EOS Scene Detection system features a new 150,000-pixel RGB+IR 252-zone metering sensor for enhanced precision. The wide-area 65-point AF array combined with EOS iTR and adjustable high-speed continuous burst shooting up to 10 fps enables the easy tracking and capturing of fast moving subjects virtually anywhere in the frame such as birds in flight or running backs eluding a tackle. A new and innovative AF Area Selection Lever nestled around the multi-controller on the back of the camera makes it easier than ever for photographers to switch between the seven supplied AF Point Selection modes without removing their eye from the viewfinder. At 10 fps, the camera's buffer capacity can consecutively capture up to 31 RAW images or 1,090 Large Fine JPEGsi. Built to last, the camera also features a shutter durability rating up to 200,000 cycles, approximately thirty three percent more than the original EOS 7D camera. A newly developed mirror mechanism uses motorized control to help reduce impact and enhance camera performance during high-speed continuous shooting. In addition to adjustable high- and low-speed continuous shooting modes, single-frame shooting and two self-timer settings, the EOS 7D Mark II camera also features silent drive modes for single frame and continuous shooting. The silent settings support discreet camera operation in quiet locations. The EOS 7D Mark II camera's advanced AE system can detect and compensate for flickering light sources such as sodium vapor lamps that are often used in gymnasiums and indoor swimming pools. When enabled, this system automatically adjusts shutter release timing to help reduce disparities in exposure and color especially during continuous shooting.

Innovative AF Technology

The EOS 7D Mark II camera features the next generation of Canon's exclusive Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF) technology, originally introduced with the EOS 70D DSLR camera. New DAF features include user-selectable adjustments for Movie Servo AF Speedii and Movie Servo AF Tracking Sensitivity. Additionally, overall focusing speed, face detection performance, and performance in low light and with low-contrast subjects have been improved over previous Canon models. Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs proprietary Canon sensor technology in which effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-detection focus measurement simultaneously to achieve dramatically improved AF performance in both video and Live View still imaging modes. With Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF system and customizable Movie Servo AF, the camera provides continuous phase-detection AF during video recording for quick and accurate focus tracking of moving subjects over approximately eighty of the image area measured horizontally and vertically. DAF focusing modes include Face Detection with Tracking, FlexiZone Multi with 31 AF zones, and FlexiZone Single that allows users to position a focusing frame on the camera's LCD screen. Canon's DAF supports over 100iii models of Canon EF lenses (including many earlier models), providing a wide array of options for photographers to explore.

Expanding Creativity

The EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera provides a wealth of creative controls building on the features and functions of the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X professional digital cameras. The new camera's AI Servo AF III autofocusing algorithm is similar to that of the EOS-1D X camera in that tracking parameters (tracking sensitivity, acceleration/deceleration tracking, and AF point auto switching) can be easily customized for specific shooting situations, using the same type of AF Configuration Menu. This capability makes it easy for EOS 7D Mark II camera users to match AI Servo AF settings when used together with EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III cameras, while also providing a high level of performance at an affordable price point. The EOS 7D Mark II camera also offers the same level of High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Multiple Exposure (ME) functionality that was originally featured in the EOS 5D Mark III camera. The HDR mode includes five HDR shooting functions and allows users to save all source images in addition to the composited HDR image. Similarly, Multiple Exposure mode provides four compositing methods and also allows users to save individual source images.Photographers and cinematographers will appreciate improved custom controls including a built-in intervalometer and bulb timer, also EOS DSLR firsts, to enable the capture of time-lapse images and long- exposure images. These features are ideal for recording fireworks, star trails, sunrises and more.In addition to optional settings for Peripheral Illumination Correction and Chromatic Aberration Correction, found in other current high-end EOS models, the EOS 7D Mark II camera, for the first time, adds Distortion Correction that operates with most EF and EF-S lenses to improve image quality even further while recording video and in-camera JPEGs. The My Menu feature has also been improved with the ability to store more user-selected settings in five additional tabs.A new and improved Intelligent Viewfinder provides approximately one hundred percent field of view, while adding the ability to superimpose a customizable selection of camera settings data such as dual-mode electronic level display, grid, exposure mode, white balance mode and AF mode. A bright, three-inch Clear View II LCD monitor (approximately 1,040,000 dots) on the back of the camera displays information and menus clearly even in bright sunlight. The EOS 7D Mark II camera is compatible with interchangeable focusing screens including the standard Eh-A as well as the optional Eh-S Super Precision Matte for use during manual focusing with large aperture lenses.A built-in GPSiv Receiver provides a digital compass and can record location information including longitude, latitude, elevation, camera direction and universal coordinated time (UTC) as EXIF data for geotagging both images and movie files in real time. The built-in pop-up flash is convenient for many applications and can also act as an optical controller with compatible off-camera EX-series Speedlites for enhanced pro-quality lighting effects. The EOS 7D Mark II camera features dual card slots for SD/SDHC/SDXC and CF memory cards, including Ultra High Speed (UHS-1) SD cards. Data transfer speeds from the camera to a personal computer are enhanced with the addition of a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port.

Stunning Movie Capability

The EOS 7D Mark II camera offers users the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD or 720p HD video up to 60p enabling slow-motion capture at full resolution in either ALL-I or IPB codecs with optional embedded time code, exceeding the specifications of other current EOS cameras. Users can also choose between .MOV and .MP4 recording formats for maximum flexibility. The EOS 7D Mark II camera's mini HDMI port can be used to record uncompressed Full HD video to external recorders.Canon's Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, such as the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, significantly reduce focus motor noise, letting the EOS 7D Mark II camera's built-in microphone capture clear audio of the scene being shot without picking up unwanted noise from the lens. The EOS 7 D Mark II camera also features a stereo microphone port and outputs stereo audio via the camera's mini-HDMI port. The EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera is equipped with a headphone jack for real-time audio monitoring, as well as a silent control feature that allows users to adjust audio levels during recordings. Other built-in ports include a PC socket for external flash units and an N3 socket for dedicated Canon wired remote control accessoriesv. A cable protector is provided to maximize safety when using the USB 3.0 and mini-HDMI ports.
