DXO vs Topaz vs Lightroom Denoise - This is a video I hope to work on shortly. I am getting so many questions since Lightroom added the new Denoise AI tool. Here is what I can say right now, the new Denoise built into Lightroom is excellent but slow. Depending on your machine it may be painfully slow. DXO remains the fastest and looks just as good to me as Lightroom. So if speed and primarily noise reduction is a priority DXO comes out on top and is worthwhile to add to your toolkit. There is still great value in owning Topaz Photo AI as it can do MORE than just reduce noise offering class leading sharpening and upsizing tools. And, the ability to selectively sharpen or denoise in Topaz Photo AI is powerful. Lightroom and DXO do not offer that, only working on the whole image.

NEW CF Express A Card - BIGGER and Cheaper + Save EXTRA 10%

Exascend is a brand I had never heard of 6 months ago- they reached out in December 2022 asking if I would review/test their CF Express A card. It has lived in my Sony a1 since then - used for over 10,000 photos in the last 6 months. I have no complaints and I am impressed that it provides more capacity at a cheaper price. Yes, it is a little slower than the Sony and Prograde cards that I compared it to but in real-world use it’s unlikely that you will ever notice a difference.

Until 5/22 use code 106EYEPW to save an additional 10% off.

Topaz Photo AI - ON SALE TODAY!

Big Savings on software that has become a regular part of my workflow. Topaz Photo Ai combines denoising, sharpening, and upscaling into one easy-to-use program. I use it often to sharpen and denoise my photos selectively. The results are incredible, and if you have been frustrated with the amount of noise and lack of sharpness in your photos, this software can make a big difference. You can run it on autopilot where the software automatically makes suggestions and finds your subject to provide selective edits. You can accept these suggestions and in just a click be done or you can take the time to manipulate the sliders to dial in exactly what you think looks best. Buying Topaz provides you with the software for life and 1 year of updates. They offer a free trial too.

Canon RF 100-400 - Affordable Telephoto Winner! Great for Crop Sensors too

On our recent SW and Yellowstone NPS workshops I was testing the affordable Canon RF 100-400. I just released my video review with tons of samples. Click the link in the bio to watch.

Video summary: this zoom lens although a little slow at f8 at 400 mm is absolutely fantastic and I am blown away by the sharpness you get at this price point. It even offers a serious advantage over the much more expensive (4x the price) Canon RF 100-500.

PRTV NEWS for March 2023

Noise Reduction Magic, Private Workshops & More

DxO released PureRaw3 last week. I had early access to the software and have now been using for almost a month - it is impressive. Really impressive! You run your RAW files through before you begin editing and with very little input from you (like 3 clicks total and no decisions to make) the software returns a cleaner DNG. For me to adopt a new piece of software into my workflow it needs to make a serious difference and I am seeing awesome improvement and the workflow is painless. Watch my video and see some before/after examples. I am still a fan of Topaz and plan to use it as a finishing tool. I share more in the video.

Sony Photographers - I finally took the time to show you all my customization settings for common Sony mirrorless cameras and this one focus trick that blows workshop participants away when I show them. Watch this NEW Video. In that video I mention two older videos with tricks that I still use today- double your zoom when using video with no loss of quality!! and the One-click magic setting I use for birds in flight but could be customized to your needs.

Don’t be slow! I work with many clients frustrated with Lightroom and so often they are using an old slow hard drive to store photos and maybe even a cheap USB hub that is slowing everything down. Stop. PLEASE! B&H Photo now has these FAST 2TB SSD drives for just $140. And make sure you are using a fast HUB - they aren’t expensive. I have a quick guide to better USB hubs here. This doesn’t guarantee faster Lightroom performance but often it will make a significant difference. Email me if you have any questions.

Private tours & workshops - I ran a small 2-person workshop this past week here in Seattle and I had a blast. Photography, post-processing, lightroom organization - I can design it to your needs. This past week I helped both participants consolidate photos from multiple drives into one, setup a backup system and taught/built some base presets for easy editing PLUS we got in some awesome photography in and around the Seattle area. I have more scheduled later this year and I want to know if you are interested. Email me and we can start designing the tour that will work best for you.

Slot Canyon Photography Tips

Slot Canyon Photography Tips -

We are headed into one of the most magical geological features in North America! Below you will find some basic settings and some additional information for those interested. Don’t worry if this feels overwhelming - we will be there coaching you through these settings and have time to practice.

@nathannitzky enjoying slot canyon photography - crop sensor Sony camera 15mm f/3.5 1/60 sec ISO 3200

Basic Photography Settings for Slot Canyons

On a tripod -
Recommended starting settings when using a tripod. Feel free to adjust as needed. You shouldn’t need to go much above f/11 if using a wide-angle lens.

ISO: 100
Aperture: f/8 - f/11
Shutter Speed: As long as it needs to be to give a good exposure
Use your 2-second timer whenever you use longer shutter speeds on a tripod. Don’t waste time and wait for 10-second timers.

Hand Held -
Recommended starting settings when holding the camera. Feel free to adjust - you may be able to get away with lower shutter speeds and wider apertures depending on your composition and camera stabilization.

Shutter speed: at least 2x your focal length*
Aperture: f/5.6 - f/11 stay more centered in the canyon (farther from the walls)
ISO: As high as it needs to be to give a good exposure. Don’t stress about high ISO - the noise is often hidden by the texture of the sandstone and programs like Topaz and DxO make it easy to remove excess noise.

*If you have good stabilization in your camera/lens you can cheat that shutter speed rule (2x your focal length) and lower your shutter speed but I always start by following that rule and then lower the shutter speed so that if I am shooting handheld I can also lower that ISO. Whenever I cheat the shutter speed rule I shoot a short burst of photos giving me a better chance of getting one or more keepers.

The closer to the walls and the more you want in focus you will need to use a higher aperture.  This is when it is better to put the camera on a tripod so you can raise the aperture and not worry about a high ISO. But, I don’t want you to feel that you need to photograph the entire canyon on a tripod. Often it is possible to shoot a wider aperture which will let you keep a reasonable shutter speed and medium-high ISOs which frees you to shoot handheld and capture a variety of compositions more quickly.  Keep your head on a swivel -good compositions can be found above you, behind, and to your side.

Best Focal Lengths for Slot Canyons -
What focal length will you use in the canyon? On a full-frame camera, I like the 14mm - 24mm range and on a crop sensor the 10mm - 18mm range.   If you want to get a sense of the depth of field you will see with the lens or lenses you plan to use in the Canyon - you can visit  https://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html and plug in your info.  This is in no way necessary to do these calculations to get good photos but it can help inform your choices of settings when you are in the canyon.

Note - this is an older calculator and missing many cameras - I just use Canon 5D for all full frame cameras and the Canon Rebel XT for all crop sensor cameras.  The App - Photo Pills is excellent and has a more up-to-date DOF calculator. The app is not free but I highly recommend it because of all the additional tools provided.

Bracketing and HDR
There are a few compositions in the canyon, mostly looking up or near the beginning when the sky may be in the shot.  These can be challenging to capture with a single exposure due to the large difference between the dark canyon and the bright sky. You can either avoid these compositions or take a series of bracketed images using your camera’s exposure bracketing options. I recommend 3-5 photos at 1 stop difference for each. We can show you how to easily combine these in Lightroom to create one HDR photo.  Do not use the HDR mode on your camera as this creates a JPEG that greatly limits your post-processing abilities.

Despite my encouragement above to shoot at higher apertures sometimes you can easily get away with a much wider aperture

Captured on a crop sensor Sony camera 11mm f/1.8 ISO 800.

Maven Filters - Fantastic quality, color coded for ease of use and compact carrying!

The title is my review! Michael asked me last year to test his new magnetic filters. Michael is a YouTuber who has been producing quality photo education for over a decade and I have always paid attention to what he was talking about and sharing. So, I was excited to try out his new filters and I can say after using for almost a year - they are excellent. UPDATE Jan 2024 - Closing in on two years of traveling the world with these filters and they continue to impress!

Maven Filters in Greenland

Here is what I love about this Maven Filter Set -

  • The highest quality glass of any filter system I have tried (and I have tried MANY) no color casts or loss of sharpness.

  • Smart color coding makes it easy to quickly grab the filter type and strength you want. When I am out in the field I don’t like to waste time trying to read the tiny print.

  • The magnetic strength of these filters is better than the competition. They do not fall off when you bump the camera/lens and are still easily removable.

  • Hydrophobic coating means water/dust/dirt just wipes off without any streaks. It is a bit like magic and I know I sound a little like an infomercial but I dropped one of the filters in the snow this weekend and was amazed that I didn’t have any streaks left behind.

  • The carry system is nice and compact, as a worldwide travel photographer and workshop educator I value travel-friendly products and these easily slip into the bag and take up less room than my smallest lens.

Snow Snout!

Every time we run this workshop, I repeat myself: Yellowstone NP in the winter is pure magic! On our way out of the park today we saw two coyotes, this one decided he needed to trot down the road just in front of our vehicles (see my story). Eventually @said_in_yellowstone , our excellent driver and guide got ahead of him and set us all up for a few moments of magic. He ended up right in front of us, just looking for dinner in the snowbank, not caring at all that he had a dozen photographers on the other side of the road.

Mac Buying Guide for Photographers - Updated January 2023

Mac Buying Guide for Photographers 2023

For the traveler who values lightweight, and portability and primarily plans to just use it for photo backup and web/email work -

Apple 13.6" MacBook Air M2, Space Gray, Mid-2022 release ($1099 - $1399)

The M2 Air is a fantastic lightweight travel machine. I found it edited photos and video well- my only real complaint was the lack of ports and on the newer version that I am recommending you get a dedicated power port (YAY!), plus two USB-C ports and a headphone jack. Two ports provide one for camera/card reader import and an external drive attached at the same time.  Overall I found the value and portability of the air to be excellent and was impressed with the editing capabilities.  I did notice some slowdowns with exporting a larger number of images at once - 50+ images. For import, organizing, and editing a few photos at a time it was flawless and no fan means silent operation.  Battery life was very good.

Buy from B&H Photo (upgraded to 16GB Ram & 512GB SSD is recommended if you plan to edit more often using this machine. Keep it at 8GB & 256GB SSD if you just plan to use this to backup photos while traveling.

For the photographer who plans to seriously edit while traveling -

The Apple 14.2" MacBook Pro with M2 Pro Chip ($1999 - $3000)

I purchase the M1 version of this laptop at the beginning of 2022 and have been extremely happy - 3 USB-C ports, HDMI, SD card reader, dedicated MagSafe power and a gorgeous OLED screen all combine to make this a powerful computer that is travel friendly. It has handled editing large amounts of photos, large photoshop files, and even 8K video files without any hesitation. Lightroom and Photoshop fly on this machine.  The only downside - the model I ordered is $2800, not cheap but I expect this laptop will last me many years. Battery life is excellent!  If you are not editing video I would recommend the base model.

Base Model 14.2” M2 Pro with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD $1999 - Buy at B&H Photo
Recommended upgrades - 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD $2599 - Buy from B&H Photo

Pair with one of the monitors recommended below for at-home dual screen or bigger screen editing.  You could also upgrade to the 16” Macbook for a larger screen while traveling but you are now carrying around a 5lb machine compared to closer to 3.5lbs for the 14” Macbook pros. Recommended 16” Macbook - 12-Core, 19-Core GPU, 1TB SSD, 32GB SSd - Buy at B&H Photo.

For editing at home -

For light editing -  Apple 24" iMac with M1 Chip Mid 2021 ($1299)

The 1 iMacs released in 2021 are great machines.  A beautiful high-quality screen at 4.5k resolution and the M1 chip provide solid performance similar to my experience with the Macbook Air above.  I have no reservations about recommending this for basic Lightroom and Photoshop editing unless you plan to edit and export many files in one sitting and need a machine that can handle higher-end video editing.  Buy from B&H Photo (upgraded to the 8 core, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD)  Downsides of this machine - you are limited to 16GB Ram which in the future may feel limiting but I saw no issues when editing on the Air M1 with the same amount of RAM.  This is also an all-in-one machine - which makes it super easy to set up but you pay a little more for having that convenience.  Note that the iMac will likely be updated sometime in 2023 so you may want to wait or consider option 2 the Mac Mini below.

For serious editing - Pair a Mac Mini M2 ($1500) with 4K monitor ($400-$1600)

This will give you an excellent editing computer, noticeably more powerful than the M1 iMac listed above but it will cost you a little more. Of course, if you already have a monitor or choose a small monitor you can save.   Recommended Mac Mini M2 Pro 10-core 16-Core GPU with 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD  Buy from B&H Photo

Pair with the LG 27BL85U-W 27" 16:9 HDR FreeSync 4K IPS Monitor for $450 Buy from B&H Photo

Power User -

With the Jan 2023 release of the Mac Mini M2 Pro, you have a small machine that in many ways is going to perform similarly to the Older M1 Max/Ultra Studio. For most users and photo editors, the power in the Mac Mini M2 Pro will be plenty. Only if you plan to do serious video editing do you need to consider the Mac Studio.

Mac Mini M2 Pro ($1899) paired with a high-quality 4K monitor ($400-$1600)

Pair with the monitor listed above or the new Apple 27" Studio Display which provides a gorgeous 5K screen $1600  Buy from B&H Photo

Mac (option 2) - Buy the 14 or 16” version of the MacBook M2 Max $3100 - $3500

Upgrade to the 14” or 16” Macbook Pro M2 Max for a powerful machine that works well on the road or at home. Just know that the 16” is less travel friendly at 4.7lbs plus the charging brick.  At home, you can use a second screen alongside the laptop to have a very capable editing machine that remains somewhat travel friendly.

The BEST USB hubs for your Laptop, Camera, & Lightroom!

It has come to my attention that many of you are using older, slower USB 2.0 hubs and or cables that are significantly slowing down the speed of any attached cameras, SD card readers, hard drives, and other peripherals. Using a slow hub slows Lightroom importing and editing! Below are three fast USB 3.0 or faster options for connecting additional drives and other devices to your computer or laptop. First, we need to clear up the confusion surrounding the cables.

USB-A cables are the standard that has been around for decades and they look like two cables on the right. The cable with the blue plastic is a USB 3.0 cable. The cable with the white plastic is USB 2.0. The far left cable is USB-C. It can be more difficult to tell what speeds a USB-C cable supports. Usually, faster USB-C cables are thicker. Confusingly Thunderbolt 3 and 4 cables use the exact same connectors as USB-C. You will need to refer to your computer documentation to figure out what your computer supports. Often they are marked with a small lightning bolt. The good news is Thunderbolt cables are backward compatible with USB-C. So when in doubt just buy the faster cables and know that they will work and really USB 3.0 is fast enough for most of us, I really just want to make sure you are no longer using USB 2.0.

Type Speed
USB 2.0 480 Mbps
USB 3.0 5 Gbps
Thunderbolt 3 40 Gbps
Thunderbolt 4 40 Gbps

Thunderbolt 4

Fast USB-C type connector cords that support up to 40 Gbps! I recommend OWC

And don’t cheap out on USB-C cords. Many cords, including Apple’s white USB-C cords, only support USB 2.0 and that is SLOW! I recommend these USB-C/Thunderbolt cords - OWC Thunderbolt 4/ USB-C Cords

Sigma Press Release -

SIGMA Introduces 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports Lens, the World's First and Only 10x Ultra-Telephoto Zoom for Mirrorless Camera Systems

Ronkonkoma, NY – January 12, 2023 – SIGMA Corporation of America, the US subsidiary of SIGMA Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki. Headquarters: Asao-ku, Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa, Japan) is pleased to announce the 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports lens. This is the world's first and only* mirrorless 10x ultra-telephoto zoom. The second full-frame mirrorless zoom lens in the SIGMA Sports line, covering standard (60mm) to ultra-telephoto (600mm), along with 1:2.4 maximum magnification (at 200mm), and weighing just 5.5 pounds (2.5kg), this lens offers exceptional versatility and is offered in Sony E-mount and L-Mount.

The SIGMA 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports is designed to be the one essential lens for travel, outdoor sports, wildlife, and safari that can cover it all from standard to ultra-tele, plus close-ups, all without ever swapping lenses; and it offers an impressive 6 stops of Optical Stabilization at the telephoto end and 7 stops at the standard end.

The newly designed HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) focusing motor delivers unprecedented fast and precise autofocusing, and dual action zoom allows for both the precision of the zoom ring and the swift, intuitive response of the push-pull action on the front end of the barrel. The three AFL buttons are easy to operate in any orientation, and the Zoom Lock switch can be locked at all marked focal distances.

The mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring, switches, switch panel and exterior connection are dust and splash resistant** to prevent dust and dirt from entering the lens, which are likely in the many outdoor situations where this lens is designed to perform.

A completely new optical design was created to for the DG DN (DG = full-frame, DN = mirrorless-exclusive) version of the 60-600mm featuring both SLD and FLD glass elements, and a multi-material structure is employed to balance durability and portability.

The SIGMA 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports will be offered for $1,999 through authorized SIGMA America retailers, and will be available beginning mid-February, 2023.

[Key Features]

  1. The one and only 60-600mm zoom lens, able to handle every situation from standard to ultra-telephoto all by itself

The SIGMA 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports is an ultra-telephoto 10x zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras that covers a zoom range of 60-600mm, a range only available from SIGMA. It enables users to seamlessly capture scenes from close-ups to long distance shots without changing lenses, even in difficult situations such as air shows or professional sports events.

Stable and high optical performance throughout the entire zoom range

SIGMA employed the latest optical design to effectively correct chromatic aberrations that tend to occur in the ultra-telephoto range using a variety of high quality materials, including FLD and SLD glass elements. The lens is capable of capturing every moment with uncompromising high image quality in the unique focal length range of 60-600mm.

The minimum focusing distance is 45cm at the wide end, and at the focal length of 200mm, the lens offers a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.4, allowing users to also enjoy the lens as a telephoto macro lens, adding to its overall versatility.

High-speed AF owing to newly developed motor "HLA" to capture the decisive moment

The autofocus of the SIGMA 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports makes use of the newly developed linear motor "HLA (High-response Linear Actuator)". This high-output linear motor and advanced electronic control realize a quiet autofocus with unparalleled high speed and high precision. The new motor also enables high focus-following performance, ensuring that the decisive moment is not missed in sports photography and any other situation where the subjects are in motion, from motor vehicles to birds in flight.

Newly developed optical stabilizer algorithm "OS2" with high compensation capability of up to 7 stops

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function employs SIGMA's newly developed algorithm "OS2". The new algorithm significantly improves image stabilization performance, with 7 stops at the wide end and 6 stops at the telephoto end. This allows the lens to capture powerful and dynamic moments with a rich sense of motion.

The lens is equipped with two OS modes: Mode 1 is suitable for general shooting, and Mode 2 is best suited for fast panning shots, for example in motorsports and other dynamic situations. In Mode 2, an acceleration sensor combined with SIGMA's Intelligent OS, an algorithm specially designed for panning shots, enable effective image stabilization even when the camera is moved vertically or diagonally, regardless of the horizontal and vertical orientation of the lens. This means that the movement of the subject can be expressed without losing the effect of panning shots.

Multi-material structure for lightweight and strong robustness

The lens features a multi-material structure, in which materials such as magnesium, CFRP*1, and TSC*2 are optimally arranged according to their characteristics. As a result, the lens barrel is lighter in weight while retaining the same robustness as previous models, thereby providing high versatility in a variety of scenes and applications.

*1 Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic, a light but strong material used in the interior and exterior fittings of aircraft, among many other applications.

*2 Thermally Stable Composite, a polycarbonate with a thermal expansion rate similar to that of aluminum. Its high affinity to metal parts contributes to high manufacturing quality standards.

Dual Action Zoom for intuitive framing

The lens supports Dual Action Zoom, allowing users to use both rotary zooming by rotating the zoom ring and straight zooming by grasping the tip of the lens. This enables both precise and quick operation in any given situation.

Dust and Splash Resistant Structure for security in various shooting situations

The mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring, switches, switch panel and exterior connection are all dust and splash resistant* to prevent dust and dirt from entering the lens. Further, the front element of the lens features a water and oil repellent coating to facilitate maintenance when water droplets or dust adhere to the lens.

* The structure is designed to be dust and splash resistant, but not waterproof. Be careful not to bring the lens in contact with a large amount of water. Water inside the lens may cause major damage and even render the lens unrepairable.

  1. High customizability and build quality of SIGMA's Sports line

The SIGMA 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports is equipped with substantial features of SIGMA's Sports line standard of high-mobility, high-performance lenses. Manufactured in SIGMA's sole production base in Aizu, Japan, the lens features an exceptional build quality that combines robustness with practicality and a high level of precision in every single detail.

Customizable functions

Equipped with a Focus Limiter switch, the lens enables users to limit the focus driving range during AF when necessary, allowing quick and precise focusing.

Further, the lens features three AFL buttons* ready to be assigned to preferred functions using the camera. The AFL buttons are easy to operate regardless of how the camera is oriented or which settings are used.

For the L-Mount version, the SIGMA USB DOCK UD-11 can be used to set OS operation or focus limiter range for the Custom Mode switch.

* Only on compatible cameras. Available functions may vary depending on the camera used.

Interchangeable Tripod Socket

The lens body incorporates an Arca Swiss compatible magnesium alloy tripod socket. The leg can be removed and replaced with other interchangeable tripod sockets (sold separately) or attached to a monopod, allowing for a multitude of different uses and situations.

Tele Converter for L-Mount (1.4x / 2.0x)

The L-Mount version of the lens is compatible with the SIGMA TELE CONVERTER TC-1411 (1.4x) and TC-2011 (2.0x). Using a tele converter, the focal length can be multiplied by 1.4x and even 2x, for AF-enabled shooting at ultra-telephoto focal lengths of up to 1200mm.

Join me - August 2024 for my favorite workshop - Katmai Brown Bears

This trip will be announced later this year for late August 2024.
A photographic workshop for ALL LEVELS - Beginning through Advanced

This small group tour has room for just 8 photographers and your instructor- Toby Gelston. Truly a trip of a lifetime. We start in Kodiak, Alaska where we board our chartered ship the Island-C. Our captain/guide/bear whisperer Trevor will take us across the Shelikof Strait and into the beautiful and protected coves of Katmai National Park. No road access here - each day we will go ashore to watch the coastal brown bears catch the migrating salmon. When we are not photographing bears you can keep a watch for eagles, otters, whales, and puffins.. the wildlife is amazing and we will often be the only ones enjoying these special moments. Meals will be cooked by our own board chef and there will be plenty of time for post-processing help and learning during the trip.

More info to be shared later this year. Because of the small group size it is possible this trip will sell out quickly. Add your name to the form below to be notified first when it is announced.

Tamron 20-40 Gallery

I am in downtown Seattle at Pike Place Market and Kaz is in Tampere, Finland at his Jolutori - We take a look at the new Tamron 20-40 f/2.8 Di III VXD for Sony. This small lightweight lens could replace several primes without sacrificing weight AND could save you money. How does it compare against a more traditional walk-around and travel lens like the Sony 24-105 f/4?

Tamron 20-40 f/2.8 for Sony Lens Summary Review

The good - it is an optically excellent lens in a small and lightweight package that despite seeming like a small range is quite versatile and it even has a USB port for firmware updates. And it is weather sealed even with this open port. I asked. And at $699 this is an affordable lens.

This lens would also work well as a video lens especially on a gimbal with no need to rebalance when you change the focal length since the barrel extension is so minimal.

The only downsides I can come up with there are no Af/MF switch and no focus hold button.

Some might want to compare this to a more traditional wide-angle like Sony’s 16-35 f/2.8 which is a great lens! But, it is much more expensive ($2199) and significantly heavier (almost 2x the weight) - Sigma and Tamron offer lighter and more affordable ultra-wide zooms but they stop at 28mm so that’s less exciting for portraits. During the summer of 2022, I reviewed the Sigma 16-28 and compared it to the Tamron 17-28. You can watch that video here.

If you want an affordable and lightweight lens that provides wide to portrait focal lengths this is a compelling option.

Build an Import Preset to Jumpstart your Editing in 2023 - Lightroom Classic

In this short video, I show you how to build a preset to automatically edit photos on import in Lightroom Classic.

Would you like to download all my presets including the NEW adaptive presets? Just sign up for my newsletter on the right and you will be sent a link.

How to Create Your Own Auto Edit Import Preset for Lightroom Classic

  1. Start with an unedited image or hit Reset to return a photo to its unedited version

  2. In the Lens Correction panel place a check mark in both Remove Chromatic Aberration and Enable Profile Corrections.

  3. In the Basic panel set Texture to +30 and Clarity to +15 (feel free to adjust these settings as desired)

  4. Optional - Tone Curve panel click the S icon to enter the parametric tone curve editor and under the tone curve enter Highlights +12, Lights + 5, Darks -5, Shadows - 15. I find that the auto tone never adds enough contrast for my taste so I use the Tone Curve to add a little more.

  5. In the Presets panel on the right click the small + sign, choose Create Preset and give it a name like My Import Preset.

  6. Match the settings to the image below.

7. Click Create.

8. You can now right click on this preset and choose Apply on Import. It will now be automatically selected in the drop down during the import window.
