Instagram Winners – Color

Sometimes it pays to be bold and let that color be strong and saturated. That was the goal this week with the color Instagram challenge. It's difficult to hit that right balance but sometimes we can find color for the best shots, especially with the winter season at the moment. Light painting with a Christmas tree,  diffused light, advertisements, and dyed hair made for great out of the box choices and you all did well!As it’s currently 17F out it’s time to photograph the cold weather, or ice cream for the Aussie’s. Cold is a temp, a feeling, so shooting it can be a bit subjective and abstract, thinking out of the box. So it’s your turn to get a bit chilly for great photos like Toby had to in Alaska. Toby's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNzfgNEjxmu/I love the two solid colors that dominate the image!

Toby's Honorable Mention:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BN5fVkfjjZf/The color against the lack of color and the unique angle - looking almost straight up which makes this stand out to me.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BN4r5ALjJpN/Lightning is always a great subject for color. You’ve got a bright flash that lights up the clouds but the different types of lightning can give different colors to the clouds. Plus being over the city you get the contrast of the yellow city lighting from the older sodium lights. It’s a great shot with nice contrast for that pop of color.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOEc2JzDdrh/Traditional bright colors with the lighter blue sky make this colorful boat a great shot. Cropping the boat to focus on the paint works well albeit I’d like the shot framed a slight bit more to the left to follow the rule of thirds better. https://www.instagram.com/p/BOC94PnjTDT/Sunsets make for a great subject but also a great backdrop for Edgar’s photo. The duller color of the city has been saturated a bit and with the nice warm background via the sunset it really makes the orange show through for the photo.

Instagram Winners – Halloween

Being the week of Halloween we just had to make the challenge #PRTV_halloween. Pumpkins, figurines, costumed portraits, and more this week fit the mood perfectly. It gives us an excuse to be a bit more creative with shoots using a mood, or fitting someone in a costume. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_freezemotion. It's time to practice your technique by freezing the action with fast shutter speeds. Something everyone always dismisses but it's a handy to know how when you need it. The subject is up to you whether it be sports, kids playing, or a tabletop DIY like water drops. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_freezemotion.

Guest: Steve Scurich

Toby's Winner:

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BMPHJo5gDux/[/embed]It's a really cool shot.  The focus is great and just thin enough that the horns go in and out of focus.

Toby's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMO0kkwgCxH/Fantastic job with this macro, the framing and silhouette in this light is super cool.https://www.instagram.com/p/BMJGDKagt39/This makes me think of The Nightmare Before Christmas with a ghost and it's a cool, creative, shot.

Steve's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMO2mOKA-Ql/As a kid the creepiest part of Halloween was the Sleepy Hallow, headless horseman story. I like the desaturated look and it gives that spooky vibe. The small branch by the cape is the weak point that would make the photo stronger if cloned out.

Steve's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMPafJOjmch/I love this one, the lighting is great. The contrast between the fake face but real eyes bring the spooky vibe. Albert Einstein is haunting us!https://www.instagram.com/p/BMPHJo5gDux/I love the focus on her eye and the horns coming right at you make for a great photo.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMPHJo5gDux/It's a great portrait and you nailed the focus on this shot.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

Join the dark side, we have cookies! It's a great example of a blackout portrait. Being a spooky Halloween shot the black dropoff works otherwise next time just put a reflector up to his left to put light back on his figure.https://www.instagram.com/p/BMXizNthIKA/As I said while sharing this on Instagram, not everything gets done in post. It's a great make up job and the sepia works for the shot.https://www.instagram.com/p/BMLurJZgGWY/

Instagram Winners – Seasons

With the leaves changing it was up to you to shoot the season with #PRTV_seasons. You shot the entire forest, a single set of leaves, and even birds this week for a nice set of photos. It seems relatively simple to shoot color but when you get out there the composition can be tough and you have to think on your feet. Just like Toby's post on Facebook a bit ago in New England finding a few leaves to shoot as a detail shot. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_halloween. It's time again for Halloween so send us your spooky shots, or your daughter dressed up as Elsa for the billionth time. it's up to you so think out of the box!To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_halloween.

Toby's Honorable Mentions:

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BL7LvOEBWV6/It’s a nice range in color through the forest and you let the sun shine through.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BL7lRPZAe9G/I wish it was a bit more centered but I like the thought and color muting the yellow stripe.https://www.instagram.com/p/BL4hxnGge8h/People always miss the tree through the forest, it’s a nice fall detail shot.

Instagram Winners – Backlit

The backlit Instagram challenge #PRTV_backlit is a way to get people to think before they shoot. A lot of people starting out take a photo based on composition but tend to forget about the quality of light on their subject. Some very high quality photos this week, really, and you guys managed to submit a bit of everything thinking outside the box for ideas. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_seasons. Fall color was the plan but as some have mentioned it's not really fall color in Australia, or even Texas really for that matter. So instead we want you to show us your season weather you go pumpkin spice for lack of color, shoot a fall landscape, or even a spring one for the Aussies. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #PRTV_seasons.

And the team!Toby – Photorectoby Scott – photoscott88 Roy – RoyMcKeeIII

Scott's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJx8Oafhl-5/Great timing, light, and composition for a great shot with a lot of character.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLZBLcRBwSh/Like you said, sometimes waiting a spot out for a photo can make for the best ones!https://www.instagram.com/p/BLtiGxYh-nk/Here at Photorec cat's are always a winner, you got a good shot with a bit of action and didn't clip the shadow.

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLw3-UbgE6b/J.Berendt Photography might be a bit of a mermaid addict but it works out this week for a backlit photo. A nice pose and expression for your model while you left enough foreground to lead up to her leaving the horizon slightly above the top rule of thirds line. Have to remember rules are meant to be broken as they are guidelines you learn from, not hard and fast laws.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLrntDRByUL/While admittedly the photo I have is quite bad compared to this one and taken on a cell phone while hunting this is what I thought of for the challenge. You did good capturing the light rays while letting in enough ambient light to properly light up the trees.  I like you left composition a bit low to catch the color in the grass and raise the ground's level up a bit in the photo.https://www.instagram.com/p/BLnA3oEjD0D/It's a great wedding photo this week by Angie Cruz Photography. You did a nice job getting that "glow" everyone wants in their photos, even if we know its backlighting. It's a great posed shot while you left the aperture shallow enough to just start getting the bokeh balls in the trees. Being me that one brown leaf in the side needs cloned out but I'm the most picky of the three of us at Photorec.tv.

Instagram Winners – Still Life

Still life was your challenge this week being a bit more on the artsy side of things. It's definitely a challenge depending if your more right brained or left brained which is why its open to found still life. Overall it's a harder subject but you guys managed to get entries in that fit the bill.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_backlit. It's time to watch your lighting and aim for a nice backlit photo. Whether it's people, animals, objects, or buildings if you can find a bit of nice backlighting to take your shot it counts! To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #PRTV_backlit.

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLjAyt9B_ah/A nice classic example of a still life. I really like the old globe you added to the theme of the travel shot.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLgzCCdhy7J/It's a bit more of an abstract piece but fits into the still life mold well.https://www.instagram.com/p/BLhn2TWlErl/It's good lighting and the variation of levels/color work for the shot.

Instagram Winners – Gear

You had a chance to show off your gear this week for the Instagram Challenge #prtv_gear. Shooting what you've been carrying around all this time to get those great photos. To be creative with it for a challenge, a bit of product photography, or behind the scenes of a shoot. From family shooting photos, to literal gears, and going underwater we like to see your creativity every week.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_stilllife. Still life photography is a bit more on the artsy side than most are used to but another great way to get out of your comfort zone.  Typically an inanimate object such as food, or basically anything not moving, taken on a table is what pops in everyone's head when it's brought up. Which is true, and quite challenging in that you have full control of light, composition, subject, etc. literally making the image. For those like myself that are better at finding things there is also found still life. It can be a challenge itself and a bit off the standard as compared to typical still life your finding a moment and not in control as much as the former method. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_stilllife.

Scott's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ_4JH-jeLs/A great behind the scenes shot capturing the moment well with the composition just catching the sun while letting the camera sit opposite in the frame.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLQTuOEjhFt/Aperture was key in this and you did great. It separates the camera with space while not losing enough detail where you can't distinguish the background.https://www.instagram.com/p/BLQ09wygtwY/?taken-by=jberendtphotographyA view from the models perspective, in this case mermaids. It makes for a great shot while leaving the space around the large underwater rigging to somewhat draw the eye center.

Roy's Winner:

An army of camera's thanks to McKay live (www.mckaylive.com). It sets a great scene shooting the mountains and adds to the story from your trip.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLKBgq_jGho/I thought someone might try to do something like a bokeh night shot with their camera in this manner. I never thought about a phone but with today's technology it is the gear we use to shoot with on the go. It's a great shot capturing the subject while creating a bokeh background in the process.https://www.instagram.com/p/BLPm-j9BgFc/Angry_runner has a bit of a family shoot for this weeks challenge and I like how it turned out as well. A gear photo with a little photographer in the making.

Instagram Winners – Family

Chosen by Patreon this week the Family Instagram Challenge had you shooting at home or being a bit more creative. As always we leave things open ended so out of the box entries are welcome. For the family challenge this didn't necessarily have to portraits, or human for that matter.  From a traditional portrait family shoot, to ducklings, a Nikon f set, and the start of a family with hands forming a heart in an engagement shoot we get all types and you guys did great.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_gear. Show us your gear! Shoot your favorite camera, lens, accessory, bag, editing area, or anything else photography gear related. One you get to show off a bit, two it’s actually a good way to practice product photography, and three it’s a fun challenge if you think creatively. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_gear.

Scott's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BK2BLl2hTQH/It's a good family shot of the dolphins and you managed to get a composition down even with them moving.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BK-1uj3jUkA/Toby loves reflections so we had to pick this shot as a honorable mention. You thought out of the box and managed to catch the family in the glasses, neat!https://www.instagram.com/p/BK1c38agcVS/A nice family shot on vacation, having the flower popped up in front made for a nice touch.

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BBjGgPgCADG/A rare moment where the entire family managed to listen for the camerawoman, and no one blinked! It's a good top-down group photo that shows your family.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BK2BLl2hTQH/I like when people managed to think out of the box and a pod of dolphins is that for sure. You did a good job of following the rule of thirds even though its a moving subject.https://www.instagram.com/p/BK-2Qyij_TM/If it can't be shot with LEGO's it just can't be done. Nancy has a nice shot of the "family" sitting around the broccoli trees.

Instagram Winners – Abstract

Abstract photography was the goal for this weeks Instagram challenge. Shooting abstract is typically a bit harder as your trying to focus on something without telling the whole story. It's less about details and more color, shapes, form and emotion to let the viewer fill in the rest. It's definitely one of the harder subjects we've done and you guys did good trying to fit this weeks goal.

Winners this week were chosen by Toby and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_family. A Patreon chosen topic, it's your chance to shoot your family and post the photos. As always the topic is open ended so you do have the chance to be creative, it's not just portraits. As examples you could even do a little Lego family scene if that's your thing or a family keepsake that bonds you all together. Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKhQn31hPyL/Typically image manipulation is a bit off book for photo challenges but I think a mirror image is fine. It's a nice split to infinity while still pulling in a bit of building details from the reflections.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKrZyu2gJZh/Oil and paper tutorials for abstract photography was actually on the list to do this week. With Photokina that didn't happen and Justin managed to make a really nice shot of the DIY project.https://www.instagram.com/p/BKrLbEFDJN4/Kapechick has a great texture shot of a basket, it might be simple but it's a good example of finding a detail in something you already own.

Instagram Winners - Scale

Scale is an interesting concept as it's an effect of you telling a story. Controlling perspective, and therein scale, it effects how we view the overall subject and it's environment. From toy's and Minnie Mouse to tilt shifts and forced perspectives we had a bit of everything this week. You guys did great!

Winners this week were chosen by Toby and Scott for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_abstract. Usually we look for the subject and details then shoot to capture the object. Abstract photography is the opposite in that you don't have a clear objective and it's somewhat up to the viewer to decide the meaning of the photo. It's a different way of thinking for those technical and detail oriented, playing to the more artistic side of things. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_abstract.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://instagram.com/p/BKYgOQ9BTOw/I like the depth of field and the framing with Minnie Mouse off centre - nice work!https://instagram.com/p/BKUh1qkDShK/Two clear points of interest well framed. This one caught the eye scrolling through the feed, the colours especially are great.

Instagram Winners - Yellow

For most of us summer is falling off into fall with fields of goldenrod and sunflowers at the moment. This weeks challenge was to find something yellow and we got everything from Lego to food.  Hunting for color is an important skill as it gets you to think outside the box and look at your environment. Shooting in the city or a snowy winter scene for example it's a good habit to look for color as it brings life to a lot of the duller colors around.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_scaleIn Toby’s How Focal Length Affects Perspective video is a good example of this as it shows how focal length can change the perspective of a building to a person. It’s your chance to size things up, make a subject look super tiny, or make it look huge. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_scale.

Scott's Winner:

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKDuVw5AarX/Berendt has a good use of props to bring interest in the photo with the model. Over the shoulder with the crown and long hair works great for this shot while the hand and sunflower balance the other side of the photo.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEaAKlfAYZm/Emanuel has a great shot of a resting snake.  Being in the woods creates a lot of nice lighting plus as a snake has great texture it captured it perfectly with a shallow depth of field.https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ9Eof9gIgV/Pretty sure everyone knows by now I like silhouettes. The foggy sunrise works perfect as it captures the light making for a nice yellow scene.

Instagram Winners - Street

With Toby in Lansing, MI this week on the photo walk a bit of street shooting was the plan. Street shooting can be a bit different for some and a favorite subject for others, it's quite the polarizing subject.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_yellow. From time to time a color challenge is helpful for concentrating on shooting. Trying to spot a color makes it a challenge to focus on only that while ignoring the rest. Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJttEfSgL7J/Two tricks for street shooting can be completely missed out on some times but make for a great photo.  Depending on the city finding color can be a bit challenging making this stand out. As for the second everyone hunts for the candid portrait when focusing on just a body part can play to a photos strength.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJpjTKog1Jb/Street photography can be fun, just look at the singing binman!https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ1U93ng6jx/Street photography can be political and current with the news. Shooting from the back, a bit candid, puts the focus on the subject rather than the crowd. Having the white sign at the top right worked out well as it draws vs it's darker counterparts.

Instagram Winners - Out of Place

This weeks challenge had your sights set on something out of place. Trying to find a stark contrast in subjects can make for a strong photo as you have elements that can contradict to tell a story or fit a theme.  Not too many entries this week but even then we still had shots that were funny, creepy, thoughtful, and even part fantasy.

Instagram Winners - Sports

With the Olympics going on this weeks challenge was sports to fit the theme. Photographing sports is always its own monster as you have to catch the moment in a subject that tends to keep you on your toes to catch everything. Between zip lines, cars, and horses we had a bit of a mix this week as you guys thought out of the box.

One nice thing about sports is you get to practice your panning photography. Erwin was a nice crisp shot using a slower speed while not blurring out the background to the point you can’t tell what's going on in the scene.

It's a great way to show motion in your photo as your background will blur with your subject staying somewhat sharp giving it that sense of energy.https://www.instagram.com/p/BI5QMbmA-UH/A lot of people exclude panning at close ranges as its tricky but this worked well. Gergö has a nice crisp shot with a clean background giving the person a great composition and adding depth to the photo.

No colors (or colours if you're Scott) anymore, I want them to turn black, and you guys did this week with our dark challenge.  From clever dark chocolate and a holocaust memorial to underwater cave snorkeling you guys didn't pull any punches this week. Scott's Winner: https://www.instagram.com/p/BIpto8xBkWd/This jumped right off my feed - a fantastic self portrait.I love the way it's composed and lit. It's crunchy and sums up the dark and moody look. Well done!Scott's Honorable Mentions:https://www.instagram.com/p/BIeRLSth_fm/Beautifully composed abstract shot - this is very pleasing to the eye - I love the way the light get blocked and reflected by different elements of the object.https://www.instagram.com/p/BInj-38g0tD/Awesome Panorama! This really pops off the screen for me, I like the light creeping over the horizon leading you up to the stars.Roy's Winner: https://www.instagram.com/p/BIgWiadjmm1/Dark clouds and mountains contrast the tiny bit of light from the city making for a great moody dark photo. I like the red sunset as it adds a nice horizon peaking through the clouds.Roy's Honorable Mentions:https://www.instagram.com/p/BIvSvf8gveW/Heather's use of playing with marbles in a blacked out background make for a great dark shot. Using blue to go with the dark background makes for a great shot.https://www.instagram.com/p/BIlW_fcBvEV/Something I had in mind for the challenge was seeing silhouettes. Denae has a great location and subject with the dark theme giving it a great look. My one issue would be the light stand which could have been removed digitally or just held in place with gaffers tape.

Instagram Winners - Wide

This weeks challenge had you going wide! Sometimes it helps to step back and get that entire scene in one shot. We had meteors, mermaids, melon, and many other great shots!Winners this week were chosen by Roy and Toby. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_dark.  Going a bit more open this week it's time to go dark! Anything from lowkey to meteors is fair game. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_dark.

The massive bridge hidden by fog shows the depth while you can just start to see the coast on the bottom.https://www.instagram.com/p/BISLzm6gf95/Using The Bean's reflection to get a bit of a wider angle was a clever interpretation and a great way to think out of the box.

Instagram Winners - High Angle

High angle just like low angle gives a better perspective for your photography. Getting high up for your shot or shooting directly above even gives you a perspective different from the standard. It gets your composition a different shot from your norm and makes it stand out in a set of photos. From baby photos, to plane window shots, to cafes, and cars you guys did great getting off the norm!Winners this week were chosen by Roy and Toby. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_wide. After going down low and getting high it's time to get wide! Shooting at wider focal lengths allows you to get a image of everything in the shot, which can be hard at times. As always your welcome to get creative with this challenge if you've got any other wide ideas. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_wide.

Low angle gave the challenge of getting to a lower stance than normal for shooting. While not great on the back it keeps off the standard angle of shooting things for a different look. We had some great photos this week from street shooting to landscapes and you did great!Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Toby. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_highangle. Instagram Winners - Kaboom

Hopefully everyone had a great Independence Day, or just a nice weekend for those not in the United States like Scott. This week was Kaboom! You guys posted about 80 firework photos, even including focus ring adjustments and light painting. It looks like everyone had a great weekend and it's a bit of practice for something we don't always get to shoot.Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Toby. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_lowangle. It's a good point for photography to learn to get low and get a new angle on life. Instagram Winners - Silhouette

This week you guys honestly stepped it up a notch. It's the nice thing about silhouettes, by simplifying the photo it lets your mind fill in a bit. Raising an good photo to a top notch one with a level of mystery or emotion you wouldn't have otherwise. As much as we like to capture detail sometimes what isn't there can be the best yet for a photo.Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Toby. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_kaboom. A bit patriotic for fireworks, a bit creative for folks in other countries, and a fun challenge all around.
