Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 Announced with 4k video

Panasonic has announced the next version of the G series, think of this as the little brother of the excellent GH4 series. What you need to know: The Lumix DMC-G7 is a mirrorless camera in the shape of a small DSLR with an articulating touchscreen, Using a micro 4/3 sensor and offering 4K video recording with some neat 4k PHOTO modes (more about that below). Panasonic's cameras use the standard micro 4/3 mount giving them access to a huge selection of lenses from Panasonic, Olympus (who also makes lenses for the mount) and a large selection of 3rd party lenses. The micro 4/3 sensor allows for small and light lenses, an advantage over many of the APS-C mirrorless cameras and DSLRs.G7 Specs:

Panasonic GX7Panasonic GX7 Panasonic GX7 Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-G7_Mirrorless_Micro_Four_Thirds_DMC-G7KS_B_HG7 Now offers two 4K photo modes:  "Pre-Burst" in which one second of video is buffered and captured before and after the shutter button is pressed - and '4K Burst' which simply captures 4K video for as long as you press down the shutter button, to a maximum duration of 29 minutes and 59 seconds. What is 4K Photo? Using this mode allows you to pull 8MB still images out of a video file- You can do this in camera or on your computer.   I do this occasionally with the GH4 and I am always impressed with the quality - You can easily print at this size and of course web sharing these images look gorgeous. Sample files selected from recent videos below.  There are downsides - you need to spend time scrolling through footage for the still shot you want and that footage quickly takes up lots of space BUT you can also think of it as capturing at 24fps - much faster burst rate than is offered on most cameras.[unitegallery gallery1]

Panasonic GF7 Announced - Specs and Thoughts

[gallery type="slideshow" link="none" columns="1" size="large" td_select_gallery_slide="slide" ids="6193,6192,6191,6190"] Panasonic has announced the GF7, a small mirrorless camera aimed at point and shoot users who want more control over settings.A follow up the GF6, the GF7 is slightly restyled and actually a little larger, giving you a better form factor to hold onto. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF7 key specifications:

  • 16MP Four Thirds sensor
  • Focus down to -4EV
  • 3" 1.04M dot rear LCD
  • 180 degree tilt "selfie" screen
  • 5.8 fps burst shooting
  • 1080/60p video in AVCHD or MP4 format
  • One touch "No Password" Wi-Fi connectivity
  • "Face", "Buddy" and "Jumping Selfie" shutter modes

More about those selfie modes -Selfies are no exception with new automatic shutter modes that offer the ability to capture more fluid, natural-looking self-portraits and group shots. Face Shutter allows a photo to be taken with a wave to the camera and Buddy Shutter recognizes when two faces are brought side-by side within the frame to instantly take a picture. In either case, more spontaneous facial expressions and poses are saved which could otherwise be lost in the process of waiting for a self-timer, or by having asked an inexperienced photographer to take your photo. The capabilities of the Lumix DMC-GF7 and a paired smartphone are further combined for even more dynamic selfies and group shots. Using the camera's touch-control 180° tiltable LCD monitor, you can position yourself and your friends in front of the lens to ensure that no one is outside of the frame even if everyone was to jump up for a mid-air portrait. When Jump Snap is activated, the accelerometer of a paired smartphone in your hand or pocket can be used to detect the highest point of your jump and simultaneously activate the shutter.Overall this should be a nice option for P&S users looking for more control and better image quality. It is a crowded market at this price and the Sony a6000 with a larger sensor gives you slightly better image quality and a viewfinder just minus some of the fun features and at a slightly larger size.Preorder the Panasonic GF7 at B&H for $599 - Shipping Late Feb.

Canon G7 X- 1" Sensor, Aimed at the Sony RX100?

Screenshot 2014-09-16 09.02.22Canon has announced a new point and shoot that should not be overlooked. The Canon G7 X is a slim, pocketable camera sporting a 1" sensor.Screenshot 2014-09-16 09.45.17Significantly larger than your typical P&S sensors and able to provide much better low light performance. The Sony RX 100 shares the same sensor size and possibly even the same sensor(G7 X has a Sony sensor).Sony's RX 100 and now Mark II and Mark III have been selling well and receiving favorable reviews - we will compare the two in a moment.

Canon G7 X Specs

  • 20.2MP 1" High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 6 Image Processor
  • 4.2x Optical Zoom f/1.8-2.8 IS Lens

  • Full HD Video Recording at 60p
  • ISO 12,800 & 6.5 fps Continuous Shooting
  • Control Ring, Dials & Built-In ND Filter
  • Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC

A pocketable camera with a fast lens f/1.8 to f/2.8 that includes a touchscreen, full HD video with neat manual control ring and an ND filter for shooting at those faster apertures in bright light- this seems like a YouTubers dream camera and the screen does flip up for selfie framing.  Photo quality should be excellent as well.  No word if the remote control/app can trigger videos or if this is for photos only? Screenshot 2014-09-16 09.02.31 The current king of the large sensor compacts is the Sony RX 100 Mark III. On paper these two look very similar with the exception that the Sony offers a small popup viewfinder, The G7 X is LCD only. However, despite both having f/1.8-f/2.8 lenses  the G7 X offers a much better aperture range through the zoom- as you zoom with the Sony you quickly hit that f/2.8 and the G7 X stays wider well past that point.

Touchscreen is a bonus.  Buy the Sony RX 100 if you want a viewfinder and slow motion video.AND. . .If you don't mind carrying around a slightly larger camera- Panasonic has announced the LX100

Panasonic LX 100 - Pocketable Micro 4/3

Screenshot 2014-09-16 10.29.53The headline feature in the LX 100 is the Micro 4/3 sensor. The larger sensor offers a significant advantage in lower light at the expense of a slightly larger body but still smaller than the current crop of micro 4/3 cameras. You also have 4K video recording. Screenshot 2014-09-16 10.29.35

Sony a5100 Announced - Serious Power in Lightweight Package

Sony has announced a new camera in their mirror-less line up, the a5100. I loved the a6000 (watch my video review of the a6000 here) and this camera takes the same sensor and focusing system and crams it into a smaller and lighter body that includes a touchscreen. Honestly I haven't always been a fan of Sony's cameras but this line (a5000, a6000 and now a5100) that has now replaced the NEX series offers excellent image quality, performance and feature set.  Headline features of the Sony a5100

  • Fast focus with 179 AF points
  • 6 FPS with focus (Sony a6000 offers 11FPS)
  • 24MP APS-C sensor (many mirrorless cameras are using a smaller sensor, 4/3, and in low light the Sony offers noticeable better images)
  • Easy Wifi Connectivity - In all my testing the Sonys still offers some of the best wifi sharing
  • Full HD 1080/24/60P video up to 50MB/s - The a6000 is limited to 28MB/s video
  • Small and Lightweight package- 2oz lighter than the a6000 and a little smaller! I was shocked at how lightweight the a6000 was and the a5100 is smaller and a little lighter.
  • TOUCHSCREEN - One of my complaints regarding the a6000 was no touchscreen.
The Sony a6000 costs $100 more and offers an EVF, a flash hot shoe for external flashes and mics, 11 FPS (vs 6FPS in the a5100) in a slightly larger and heavier package.

Canon SL1(100D) Review - Early Thoughts and Sample Images

I have had the Canon SL1 in my hands for about two weeks.  It is an enjoyable little camera with some neat features.

Canon SL1 18MP - World's Smallest DSLR

My Early Thoughts on the Canon SL1

  • Best Touchscreen - bright with near perfect sensitivity
  • Paired with the 40mm pancake or the 50 you have a sweetly sized package capable of excellent photos
  • Silent Shutter mode is stealthy
  • Feels surprisingly nice in the hand considering it's small size
  • Loses much of it's small appeal as soon as you attach any normal sized lens

Video of my early thoughtsVideo SL1 Compared to the Canon T5i Not mentioned in the video- SL1 has a mono mic, T5i has stereo.

Panasonic GF6 - Innovative Features

It is nice to see companies really innovating and the latest Micro 4/3 or Interchangeable Lens Camera (ILC) from Panasonic does just that.   The headline feature here is an NFC/Wifi combo that on paper looks pretty snazzy.  NFC is near field communication, it allows devices to talk to each other at very close distances, so close they might almost be touching.  This is fairly secure and in this case provides a user with quick setup of wireless. You touch your NFC enabled smartphone/tablet to the camera and they share the Wifi connection information.  Start shooting and you can receive the images on your smartphone, you can also set the camera up to send straight to a computer or various online accounts through the Panasonic pipes (my term, not theirs).   Android and iOS apps also let you remotely control the camera to varying degrees.I don't spend a ton of time talking about 4/3 cameras but only because I am so busy focusing on DSLRs.  More than a few times in the past months I have had folks that assume a DSLR is the only choice when moving up from a P&S and the 4/3 offer a very viable alternative.  You do sacrifice some low light performance with these smaller sensors but you gain better video recording focus, smaller more portable bodies and innovative features, like the built in Wifi sharing.[gallery columns="2" link="file" ids="3454,3455"]I hope to share more information about the GF6 soon.  And I'd love to hear your thoughts. How often do you head out of the house without a DSLR because you don't feel like dealing with the weight/bulk?  I wonder how successful the SL1 will be compared.

The image processor Venus Engine is also newly developed to feature its advanced noise reduction systems. By extending the control level of noise, controllable area of noise is expanded by approx.64x in size. This makes it possible to remove large block of noise which was formally hard to detect and helps produce clear, smooth image especially for the nighttime scenery. In addition, the Multi-process NR (Noise Reduction) works in two separate steps allowing even finer control over noise level. The texture of noise itself, regardless of the noise size, is improved with this deliberate control, which is resulting in the reproduction of smooth human skin even in high sensitivity recording.Furthermore, the optimum design of newly adopted Detail Reproduction Filter Process enhances the limit resolution by max. 3% and the contrast of middle to high range by max. 5%. Plus, the advanced Intelligent D-range Control offers wider dynamic range while maintaining the smooth gradation thanks to the higher-precision signal processing performed by the redesigned signal processing circuit. Suppressing both blocked shadows and blown highlights, every part of an image – from dark to bright – is faithfully reproduced. The combination of the new Live MOS Sensor and the Venus Engine achieves ISO3200 (Auto) and max. ISO 25600 (Extended). The Low Light AF in DMC-GF6 gains higher performance in such as moonlight even without AF assist lamp to set focus on the subject more quickly and more precisely.Pursuing Even Higher Speed Response and MobilityThe DMC-GF6 boasts even higher response. It takes only approx.0.5 sec to shoot photo after startup (CIPA). Not only its intuitive touch controllability on the rear monitor, the optimum layout of operation devices makes the camera control smooth and easy. The newly added function lever allows direct adjustment of allotted function - zoom*1, exposure or aperture*2 control, which works for magnification in playback mode and page flip in menu. The mode dial has come back for this new DMC-GF6.All cameras of LUMIX G adopt Contrast AF for its focus system. Compared with the Phase difference system AF, the Contrast AF boasts higher accuracy especially in shooting with bright lens with small F value. The DMC-GF6 also boasts high-speed Light Speed AF making it possible to capture fast-moving subjects clearly. Also, AF Tracking enables consecutive shooting to capture moving subject in sharp focus.Combined with the Full-area Touch AF, it is possible to set focus on any point in the field of view which realizes quick and intuitive focusing operation with free frame composition. In addition, the newly adopted Touch AE (Auto Exposure) function allows setting focus and exposure at a single touch on the subject displayed on the monitor.A Variety of Shooting Functions for Artwork CreationThe DMC-GF6 is not just a high quality camera but an advanced photographic tool enhancing shooting experience with wide variety of options. With the new Self Shot mode, users can shoot their own portraits by stretching an arm to hold the camera with the rear monitor flipped approx.180°vertically to get in a frame properly. A variety of options such as Creative Control can be applied on this self-portrait, too.The popular Creative Control mode is upgraded by increasing its filter option from 14 (for DMC-GF5) to 19 (for DMC-GF6) adding new Old Days, Sunshine*3, Bleach Bypass, Toy Pop, Fantasy in addition to the conventional Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic, Soft Focus*3, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, One Point Color, Cross Process, Low Key, Toy Effect and Star Filter*3 and Miniature Effect*4 mode. Effect parameter of each mode is also adjustable. With the new Creative Panorama function, it is possible to shoot a horizontal / vertical panoramic image with consequent shots taken by overlaying the previous picture and to put on a filter effect of Creative Control*5.The new Stop Motion Animation function enables producing a stop motion (stop frame) video in camera with the pictures that are sequentially shot while moving the object by degrees. The Canon Rebel SL1 (100D)

sl1Follow all SL1 News on FacebookAlong with the barely updated Canon T5i (700D) Canon announced the Rebel SL1, a slimmed down version of the T4i and now T5i cameras. It is the internals of the T5i/T4i with a few differences

  • 80% coverage of AF in Live View, this is an increase and should make live view focusing better, not necessarily faster, just better.
  • 4fps - max of 7 RAW and 28 JPEGs, this is down from 5fps with 10 RAW in the T4i/T5i
  • 9 focus points but only the center focus point is cross type.
  • Creative filters can be display in real time during live view shooting
  • Background blur display in live view ( I too am curious to know more)
  • New Scene Modes- Kids, Food and Candlelight (not present in T4i or T5i)

CanonSL1Externally the camera has a few difference

  • Mono mic
  • Non-articulating LCD screen
  • Multi purpose buttons surrounding the multi purpose SET/Q menu - on the T5i and T4i the button surrounding the set menu are all labeled and the Q button is different.
  • Camera does retain all other buttons found on the T4i/T5i cameras.
  • It is smaller, a good bit smaller, paired with the 40mm STM lens, this will be quite the tiny powerhouse.

Available at the end of April - $799 for SL1 with 18-55 STM lens | Body only  Not sure which will be right for you?  The T3i, T5i or the SL1?   Send me an email.  You can also leave me a message on my FB facebook.com/Digital.Photo.Recommendations. Panasonic Lumix G-Series - Super Sale

Today's Amazon Deal includes four models from Panasonic A quick note about Micro 4/3 cameras - think of these like Mini-DSLRS or think of them like powerful Points & Shoot cameras with interchangeable lenses.  They have sensors larger than P&S but not quite the size of an entry level DSLR and thus their image quality is excellent in day to day shoot and a bit below DSLR quality in low light performance.  This "almost as good as a DSLR" description carries over to focusing too, still shot auto focus and the shutter lag you will experience are almost as good.  Video focus is actually better in some cases.  Three models (despite four being listed, two are the same camera offered in black or red). along with my quick thoughts are listed below.  In general these prices are excellent and if you are looking for a versatile and fairly compact general travel camera I really see no need to tote around a DSLR. If shooting video will be your primary use and you want camcorder like focusing take a look at either the GH2 or the GF5 - both shoot excellent video. The Panasonic GF3 12MP with 14-42 Lens ($279)An older model but at $279 you get a versatile lens and a good touchscreen.   Additional lenses are a good bit cheaper than DSLR lenses so total dollars spent will be pretty significant too and the lens selection is excellent.  Unlike on the T4i the touchscreen on the GF3 does replace many of the physical buttons - the upside is a clean and uncluttered back and a variety of manual controls that are easily accessible via the touchscreen.  Downside is you need to use the touchscreen to change most settings.    Bottom line - if you want better performance than your P&S is providing and you are on a tight budget there really is no better option than the GF3.

The Panasonic GH2 16MP with 14-42 Lens ($499)This is quite a different beast from the camera above and at almost twice the price you would hope it offers more and it does.  This is much more DSLR like in its styling and includes a hotshoe for flash or mic attachment as well as an articulating touchscreen.  Unlike the GF3 above the GH2 does include physical controls giving you a user interface similar to the canon T4i.  Focus is fast and this camera has really been optimized to shoot video, it does a fine job with stills too but it is important to note that lots of thought went into the video aspects of this camera making it a much better choice over the DSLRS at the same price point.

The Panasonic GF5 12MP with 14-42 Power Zoom Lens ($529)The newest of the three cameras listed here - think of it like a blend of the previous two.  Styling is very similar to the GF3 but it shares more of the internals with the GH2 in that focus and video options are top notch.  There really isn't anything else at this size and price point that will give you the results.  The power zoom lens is smaller than the 14-42 that is paired with the two models above.  And I really can't stress enough if focus during video is important to you these cameras, especially the last two really beat the Nikon and Canon DSLRS.See all the options on the Panasonic Gold Box Deal page.Amazon is also offering deals on the SanDisk Extreme Cards - My tests found these cards to offer the best performance for the money.I am happy to answer specific questions about either of these cameras.  The prices listed above are good for today NOV 18th only
