It is nice to see companies really innovating and the latest Micro 4/3 or Interchangeable Lens Camera (ILC) from Panasonic does just that. The headline feature here is an NFC/Wifi combo that on paper looks pretty snazzy. NFC is near field communication, it allows devices to talk to each other at very close distances, so close they might almost be touching. This is fairly secure and in this case provides a user with quick setup of wireless. You touch your NFC enabled smartphone/tablet to the camera and they share the Wifi connection information. Start shooting and you can receive the images on your smartphone, you can also set the camera up to send straight to a computer or various online accounts through the Panasonic pipes (my term, not theirs). Android and iOS apps also let you remotely control the camera to varying degrees.I don't spend a ton of time talking about 4/3 cameras but only because I am so busy focusing on DSLRs. More than a few times in the past months I have had folks that assume a DSLR is the only choice when moving up from a P&S and the 4/3 offer a very viable alternative. You do sacrifice some low light performance with these smaller sensors but you gain better video recording focus, smaller more portable bodies and innovative features, like the built in Wifi sharing.[gallery columns="2" link="file" ids="3454,3455"]I hope to share more information about the GF6 soon. G7 Now offers two 4K photo modes: "Pre-Burst" in which one second of video is buffered and captured before and after the shutter button is pressed - and '4K Burst' which simply captures 4K video for as long as you press down the shutter button, to a maximum duration of 29 minutes and 59 seconds.What is 4K Photo? Using this mode allows you to pull 8MB still images out of a video file- You can do this in camera or on your computer. I do this occasionally with the GH4 and I am always impressed with the quality - You can easily print at this size and of course web sharing these images look gorgeous. There are downsides - you need to spend time scrolling through footage for the still shot you want and that footage quickly takes up lots of space BUT you can also think of it as capturing at 24fps - much faster burst rate than is offered on most cameras.[unitegallery gallery1]
Canon has announced a new point and shoot that should not be overlooked. The Canon G7 X is a slim, pocketable camera sporting a 1" sensor.
Significantly larger than your typical P&S sensors and able to provide much better low light performance. The Sony RX 100 shares the same sensor size and possibly even the same sensor(G7 X has a Sony sensor).Sony's RX 100 and now Mark II and Mark III have been selling well and receiving favorable reviews - we will compare the two in a moment.
The current king of the large sensor compacts is the Sony RX 100 Mark III. On paper these two look very similar with the exception that the Sony offers a small popup viewfinder, The G7 X is LCD only. However, despite both having f/1.8-f/2.8 lenses the G7 X offers a much better aperture range through the zoom- as you zoom with the Sony you quickly hit that f/2.8 and the G7 X stays wider well past that point.
The headline feature in the LX 100 is the Micro 4/3 sensor. The larger sensor offers a significant advantage in lower light at the expense of a slightly larger body but still smaller than the current crop of micro 4/3 cameras. You also have 4K video recording.
