New Sony Lenses - 70-300 OSS and 50mm f/1.8

What you need to know - Sony has announced two new FE lenses - FE lenses mount on the a6000/6300 and A7 series.    The 50mm f/1.8 will be affordable and lightweight at $250. The 70-300 is G series and likely optically excellent and expensive at $1200. Available in May.   Read on for more details -Preorder Links from B&H PhotoFE 50mm f/1.8 at B&H PhotoFE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS at B&H PhotoOne of the common complaints I hear about the Sony system is the lack of lenses!  Sony is clearly very aware of this and has been working hard to round out their lens offerings - The Sony 70-300 OSS and 50mm f/1.8 were just announced - giving sony photographers greater zoom with the 70-300 and a cheaper prime with the 50mm f/1.8.   The 50mm f/1.8 at $250 is competitive with other cheap primes from Canon and Nikon. The 70-300 seems expensive but the G series of lenses have been optically excellent and I suspect this 70-300 will match or beat Canon's 70-300 L series lens.FE50F18 A FE50F18 B70-300_2 70-300Preorder Links from B&H PhotoFE 50mm f/1.8 at B&H PhotoFE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS at B&H PhotoYour use of our links supports what we do here at Photorec.tv and costs you nothing extra.

Sony Bolsters Full-Frame FE Lens Lineup with New 70-300mm High-Resolution Zoom and 50mm F1.8 Prime LensesNew FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS Telephoto Zoom and 50mm F1.8 Prime Lens Extend Sony α Shooting Possibilities

SAN FRANCISCO, Mar. 29, 2016 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today introduced two new full-frame lenses for their E-mount camera system, the FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom and 50mm F1.8 prime lens. The new FE 70-300mm F4.5-F5.6 G OSS zoom lens represents the first Sony α E-mount lens to reach a 300mm focal length, featuring high resolution and excellent overall optical performance throughout the entirety of its range. The new 50mm F1.8 prime lens is extremely compact, lightweight and affordably priced, making it an ideal choice for those looking to explore the benefits of a large aperture prime lens at a reasonable cost.“We’re continuing to build out our FE lens lineup, offering more variety than ever for today’s imaging enthusiasts,” said Neal Manowitz, Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Electronics. “Representing two of the most requested focal lengths by our customers, the new 70-300mm zoom and 50 F1.8mm prime become ideal choices for those looking to expand and enhance their Sony α kits.New FE 70-300mm F4.5 – 5.6 G OSS Telephoto Zoom LensSony’s longest reaching E-mount lens to date, the new FE 70-300mm F4.5 – 5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom lens (model SEL70300G) features a state-of-the-art optical design including four aspherical glass elements, two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and Sony’s Nano AR coating, which all work together to effectively suppress spherical aberration, distortion, and chromatic aberration. This ensures beautiful high-resolution results for both still and video shooting. The new telephoto zoom lens also features class-leading close-up performance, with a minimum focusing distance of less than 3 feet (0.9m) and a maximum magnification of 0.31x, making it an ideal choice for tele-macro photography. This outstanding close-up performance also factors into the lens’ excellent corner-to-corner sharpness. The versatile zoom lens includes built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization that helps to reduce camera shake, making it easier to capture clear images when shooting handheld. Additionally, the new SEL70300G model has a linear actuator that allows it to achieve fast, smooth and quiet autofocus and is also dust and moisture resistant1 to ensure reliable operation in harsh outdoor conditions.New FE 50mm F1.8 Prime LensWeighing in at less than 7 oz (192 g), the new lightweight FE 50mm F1.8 “normal” prime lens (model SEL50F18F) delivers an outstanding blend of performance, compactness and value, making it a perfect choice for hobbyist photographers and videographers looking to experience the benefits of a wide aperture prime lens at an attainable cost. The lens features a new optical design with an aspherical element that effectively compensates for all forms of aberration, resulting in beautiful, crisp imagery. Additionally, it has a circular aperture with a maximum of F1.8, producing beautiful ‘bokeh’ in images that allows the subject to stand out against a smoothly defocused background. For extended durability, the new prime lens is built with a solid metal mount.Pricing and AvailabilityThe new FE 70-300mm F4.5 – 5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom lens will be available in May for about $1,200 US and $1,700 CA, respectively. The new FE 50mm F1.8 prime lens will also be available in May for about $250 US and $350 CA, respectively. Both of the new FE interchangeable lenses will be sold at a variety of Sony authorized dealers throughout North America.

The Nik Collection is now FREE!

I paid $134.25 for this a few years ago! The collection includes- Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Viveza, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro and Dfine.I use the Silver Efex Pro for excellent B&W conversions, I feel it offers better results and is easier to work with than Lightrooms own B&W options/presets.Silver Efex Pro A recent instagram shot I used Nik Silver Efex Pro to editDSC09528-Edit15.0 sec at f - 11ISO 400The rest of the set is pretty handy too - Go grab it for free now.  Google Nik Collection.  I do worry that this means we won't see much development on this in the future now that it is free.  It would be interesting to see more of these tools be bundled into Google Photos.   If you did buy Nik this year Google will be refunding your money. The Complete Collection is now Free

Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 and 30mm f/1.4 DC

We have Sigma's press release below - The 50-100 f/1.8 at $1099 is an interesting lens, certainly one of the more expensive APS-C lenses but still way below the cost of something like the 70-200 f/2.8 and likely providing better performance on an APS-C camera.   The 30mm f/1.4 looks really nice for micro 4/3 as a portrait lens - you have roughly a 2x crop with micro 4/3 which makes this a fast 60mm lens for just $339! Sigma Expands Its Global Vision Lens Line With Two New High-Performance Lenses:50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM Art and 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary50-100mm is first constant aperture F1.8 telephoto zoom; 30mm represents first affordable F1.4 high-performance lens for mirrorless camerasKANAGAWA, JAPAN  February 23, 2016 Sigma Corporation of America, a leading DSLR lens, camera, flash and accessories manufacturer, today announced the addition of two high-performance APS-C format lenses to the Sigma Global Vision product line: Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM Art Lens and the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens.“Sigma’s aim is to provide high-performance lens options that lead with innovation and break new boundaries for every photographic scenario our customers can dream up,” states Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “These new lenses build on Global Vision’s great IQ technology and reflect this goal, delivering immense value, quality and performance that the Sigma brand is known for.”Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM ArtBuilding on the groundbreaking Sigma Global Vision 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art Lens, the new Sigma 50-100 F1.8 (75-150mm on 35mm format) mid-range zoom lens embodies the same engineering prowess to deliver outstanding prime lens-like results. Sony A6300 4K for the Masses

Sony has announced the long awaited successor to the a6000.  The new camera simply called the a6300 does offer some significant advancements worth the wait and a one disappointing features still missing from most of the Sony line.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDpM190WmXcThe Key features of the new Sony

  • 24MP CMOS APS-C sensor with copper wiring (same MP as a6000 but upgraded sensor)
  • 425-point on-sensor phase-detection AF system (HUGE number of AF points and good coverage out to the frame edges)
  • 11 fps continuous shooting (8fps continuous live view) (Same as a6000 but live view continuous is now faster)
  • Silent shooting
  • Max ISO of 51200 (I expect high ISO in this camera will be excellent)
  • 4K video capture up to 100 Mbps (Offering some of the best 4K in an ILC at this price point)
  • Sturdier magnesium construction and some weather sealing vs the original a6000
The body is almost identical to the a6000 - same tilting screen, same resolution. Button placement looks identical with the addition of an AEL switch on the back - likely giving you additional customization options similar to the a7 full frame series.
The 11FPS matches the a6000, the improvement comes when shooting live view- up to 8fps with a very short blackout between frames allowing better tracking of moving subjects and the AF system offers a  new 4D tracking system with dynamically activated AF points around your subject and the camera will adjust depending on the motion of the subject itself..   I expect this camera will now match and beat the latest DSLRs in the same price range.4K at 100mbits with oversampling from the whole sensor! What that all means - this 4K footage should be excellent, low noise even at higher ISOs and very sharp.  No additional crop (beyond the standard 1.5x sony aps-c crop) while shooting video which means this camera is going to be much better for some videographers than the double the price Nikon D500.What is disappointing? No Touchscreen. Almost all other DSLRs at this price point offer a touchscreen and despite the smaller size and a few fewer buttons Sony still hasn't offered a touchscreen.  The electronic viewfinder (EVF) is also the same and I didn't love the a6000 EVF- it is a bit dull.   Also much smaller annoyance  still USB 2.0.  USB 3.0 would be nice at this point when you want to transfer files without Wifi or even tethering. No in body image stabilization (IBIS) as some people had hoped - I didn't expect that at this level and price point but if you want that and the small size you need to look at the Olympus or step up to full frame.Overall I expect this camera to sell very well and is likely the first camera to offer 4K and sell as well as it will - basically Sony just brought 4K to the masses.  Expect grandma's birthday party footage to be 4k now ;)The Sony α6300  will be available in MarchPreorder now from B&H Photo Sony a6300 (Body Only) $998.00 | Sony a6300 with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 LensSony A6300Sony also announced a pile of PRO lenses including a new 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 and an 85mm f/1.4. Available in Mid March for $6500 - Preorder from B&H Photo or AmazonThis is a beast of a camera - suited for professional sports photographers and others that need amazing speed, focusing power and excellent low light capabilities.  Interesting that it does allow 4K recording but limits that to just 3 minutes.  If you record to an external device like an Atomos Shogun you can record for much longer.    I am not sure what else to say about this camera- it's heavy, expensive and powerful. Offering a nice step forward in the evolution. You can purchase a model with dual CF cards (they are still way faster than SD of the even fast XQD memory slots- they are similar in size and shape to compact flash but offer speeds up to 1 Gbit/s read and write speed. Nikon Also announced the D500 Nikon D500- Crop Sensor BeastHeadline Features of the Nikon D500

Nikon D500 Top ViewThis camera is going to be very interesting to do a Canon 7D Mark II vs Nikon D500. I feel like Nikon looked at the complaints about the 7D Mark II and said - yea, we can give you a camera like that and fix ALL of your complaints and then some!    This also shows that Nikon is committed to the crop sensor format.     Taking the same focusing system from the $6500 D5 and putting it in a crop sensor like the D500 is impressive - this gives you coverage out to the very edge of the frame with the higher accuracy cross type points! And I am sure this camera will be excellent at tracking fast moving subjects.Nikon D500 Tilting TouchscreenNikon has introduced a tilting touchscreen that provides full control of the camera -menu navigation and settings control, and is usable while shooting, giving you the ability to choose a focus point or an area to set the white balance from. The screen can also be used as a keyboard for quickly entering notes, copyright info, or IPTC information.  4K capable, though limited to just 3 minutes internally - if you need longer pickup an external device like an Atomos Shogun. And Nikon has introduced a wifi/bluetooth connectivity system similar to the excellent system in the Samsung NX1. You have the ability to have a low power constant connection to your smartphone pushing images as you take them.  No more fiddling with connections each time you want to grab an image.  I loved the NX1 version of this and I am happy to see it adopted by Nikon.  Hopefully canon will follow suit.I'd love to know what you think about these two cameras?  Leave a comment below. Also announced is a new Flash System with radio, the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight, similar to the Canon 600RT system we use at weddings and love.  See the complete list of new gear from Nikon. Canon shooters feeling jealous? We should know more about the 1DX Mark II later this month and the 5D Mark IV in early March - if not sooner.   As far as crop sensor cameras go we will not see any updates on the 7D Mark II for at least a year- it is a fantastic camera, I just wish they had added some connectivity options and a touchscreen.
