Instagram Winners – Abstract

Abstract photography was the goal for this weeks Instagram challenge. Shooting abstract is typically a bit harder as your trying to focus on something without telling the whole story. It's less about details and more color, shapes, form and emotion to let the viewer fill in the rest. It's definitely one of the harder subjects we've done and you guys did good trying to fit this weeks goal.

Winners this week were chosen by Toby and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_family. A Patreon chosen topic, it's your chance to shoot your family and post the photos. As always the topic is open ended so you do have the chance to be creative, it's not just portraits. As examples you could even do a little Lego family scene if that's your thing or a family keepsake that bonds you all together. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_family.

And the team!Toby – Photorectoby Scott – photoscott88 Roy – RoyMcKeeIII

Toby's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKbbZaNjX-O/I love the soft flowing green filling the frame.

Toby's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKemHCYBcRZ/Natnees mostly identifiable rain drops - just the right blend of identifiable and abstract.https://www.instagram.com/p/BKrZyu2gJZh/And Justin's shot was one of the first that caught my eye -great colors and a pull to find out more about this image

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKhQn31hPyL/Typically image manipulation is a bit off book for photo challenges but I think a mirror image is fine. It's a nice split to infinity while still pulling in a bit of building details from the reflections.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKrZyu2gJZh/Oil and paper tutorials for abstract photography was actually on the list to do this week. With Photokina that didn't happen and Justin managed to make a really nice shot of the DIY project.https://www.instagram.com/p/BKrLbEFDJN4/Kapechick has a great texture shot of a basket, it might be simple but it's a good example of finding a detail in something you already own.

Instagram Winners - Scale

Scale is an interesting concept as it's an effect of you telling a story. Controlling perspective, and therein scale, it effects how we view the overall subject and it's environment. From toy's and Minnie Mouse to tilt shifts and forced perspectives we had a bit of everything this week. You guys did great!

Winners this week were chosen by Toby and Scott for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_abstract. Usually we look for the subject and details then shoot to capture the object. Abstract photography is the opposite in that you don't have a clear objective and it's somewhat up to the viewer to decide the meaning of the photo. It's a different way of thinking for those technical and detail oriented, playing to the more artistic side of things. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_abstract.

Toby's Honorable Mentions:

Scott's Winner:

https://instagram.com/p/BKNqneQD6j4/Scale in every meaning! Creative and beautifully executed, well done!

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://instagram.com/p/BKYgOQ9BTOw/I like the depth of field and the framing with Minnie Mouse off centre - nice work!https://instagram.com/p/BKUh1qkDShK/Two clear points of interest well framed. This one caught the eye scrolling through the feed, the colours especially are great.

Instagram Winners - Yellow

For most of us summer is falling off into fall with fields of goldenrod and sunflowers at the moment. This weeks challenge was to find something yellow and we got everything from Lego to food.  Hunting for color is an important skill as it gets you to think outside the box and look at your environment. Shooting in the city or a snowy winter scene for example it's a good habit to look for color as it brings life to a lot of the duller colors around.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_scaleIn Toby’s How Focal Length Affects Perspective video is a good example of this as it shows how focal length can change the perspective of a building to a person. It’s your chance to size things up, make a subject look super tiny, or make it look huge. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_scale.

Scott's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ9Eof9gIgV/It's a great silhouette shot going a bit monochrome for the sunrise.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BHuK1RGhIuc/The foreground sunflower against the background of more sunflowers makes for a good subject in a crowd.https://www.instagram.com/p/BKHb0GHgEDJ/Having a bit of foreground interest in your photo helps bring depth to a photo and a bit of color.

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKDuVw5AarX/Berendt has a good use of props to bring interest in the photo with the model. Over the shoulder with the crown and long hair works great for this shot while the hand and sunflower balance the other side of the photo.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEaAKlfAYZm/Emanuel has a great shot of a resting snake.  Being in the woods creates a lot of nice lighting plus as a snake has great texture it captured it perfectly with a shallow depth of field.https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ9Eof9gIgV/Pretty sure everyone knows by now I like silhouettes. The foggy sunrise works perfect as it captures the light making for a nice yellow scene.

Instagram Winners - Street

With Toby in Lansing, MI this week on the photo walk a bit of street shooting was the plan. Street shooting can be a bit different for some and a favorite subject for others, it's quite the polarizing subject.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_yellow. From time to time a color challenge is helpful for concentrating on shooting. Trying to spot a color makes it a challenge to focus on only that while ignoring the rest. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_yellow.

Scott's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJkM5HXgCRT/A nice little festival, I like how you focused on the alley and lights then left the people a bit underexposed.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJyZaS6BOgQ/When you visit a new city the back alley shots can be the best sometimes.https://www.instagram.com/p/BJttEfSgL7J/Color makes for a nice contrast to the usual street photos.

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJttEfSgL7J/Two tricks for street shooting can be completely missed out on some times but make for a great photo.  Depending on the city finding color can be a bit challenging making this stand out. As for the second everyone hunts for the candid portrait when focusing on just a body part can play to a photos strength.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJpjTKog1Jb/Street photography can be fun, just look at the singing binman!https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ1U93ng6jx/Street photography can be political and current with the news. Shooting from the back, a bit candid, puts the focus on the subject rather than the crowd. Having the white sign at the top right worked out well as it draws vs it's darker counterparts.

Instagram Winners - Out of Place

This weeks challenge had your sights set on something out of place. Trying to find a stark contrast in subjects can make for a strong photo as you have elements that can contradict to tell a story or fit a theme.  Not too many entries this week but even then we still had shots that were funny, creepy, thoughtful, and even part fantasy.

Winners this week were chosen by Toby and Roy for this Patreon chosen challenge.  Find out more about becoming a Patreon member and the exclusive benefits at http://photorec.tv/support/.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_street. From out of place to a bit of normalcy, it's your chance to do a bit of street photography. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_street.

Instagram Winners - Sports

With the Olympics going on this weeks challenge was sports to fit the theme. Photographing sports is always its own monster as you have to catch the moment in a subject that tends to keep you on your toes to catch everything. Between zip lines, cars, and horses we had a bit of a mix this week as you guys thought out of the box.

Winners this week were chosen by Roy and our Patreon supporters.  Find out more about becoming a Patreon member and the exclusive benefits at http://photorec.tv/support/.

Roy's Winner:

I like using the silhouette and sun for a monochrome shot. Using the rule of thirds while dropping low you get a lot of foreground draw focus to your subject and bokeh.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJBigqjgrkE/

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

One nice thing about sports is you get to practice your panning photography. Erwin was a nice crisp shot using a slower speed while not blurring out the background to the point you can’t tell what's going on in the scene.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJTU6gaDg-5/Justin has a nice sports shot of a sailing practice run. The nice thing to keep in mind for photos like these is the boat in the background balances the photos interest. Otherwise you’d have one boat and a lot of negative space in the background. https://www.instagram.com/p/BJRUcSrAbxx/

Instagram Winners - Motion

Stars, sports, wildlife, and more this week with a challenge to catch the motion. It's a bit trickier this week as you had to slow or speed up your shutter to catch the action. It's a bit tricky if your starting out but a great way to learn your camera, especially if you need to switch to catch something quickly in the future. We had a bit of everything this week making it a bit tricky to pick winners again.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_sports. Considering the Olympics going on at the moment it's fitting with hundreds of photographers covering the event you get to as well for the week. It's a great way to show motion in your photo as your background will blur with your subject staying somewhat sharp giving it that sense of energy.https://www.instagram.com/p/BI5QMbmA-UH/A lot of people exclude panning at close ranges as its tricky but this worked well. Gergö has a nice crisp shot with a clean background giving the person a great composition and adding depth to the photo.

Instagram Winners - Dark

No colors (or colours if you're Scott) anymore, I want them to turn black, and you guys did this week with our dark challenge.  From clever dark chocolate and a holocaust memorial to underwater cave snorkeling you guys didn't pull any punches this week. We had almost 200 photos to choose from making it a hard choice to pick our winners.

Scott's Winner: https://www.instagram.com/p/BIpto8xBkWd/This jumped right off my feed - a fantastic self portrait.I love the way it's composed and lit. This really pops off the screen for me, I like the light creeping over the horizon leading you up to the stars.Roy's Winner: https://www.instagram.com/p/BIgWiadjmm1/Dark clouds and mountains contrast the tiny bit of light from the city making for a great moody dark photo. I like the red sunset as it adds a nice horizon peaking through the clouds.Roy's Honorable Mentions:https://www.instagram.com/p/BIvSvf8gveW/Heather's use of playing with marbles in a blacked out background make for a great dark shot. Using blue to go with the dark background makes for a great shot.https://www.instagram.com/p/BIlW_fcBvEV/Something I had in mind for the challenge was seeing silhouettes. Denae has a great location and subject with the dark theme giving it a great look. My one issue would be the light stand which could have been removed digitally or just held in place with gaffers tape.

Instagram Winners - Wide

This weeks challenge had you going wide! Sometimes it helps to step back and get that entire scene in one shot. We had meteors, mermaids, melon, and many other great shots!Winners this week were chosen by Roy and Toby. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_dark.  Going a bit more open this week it's time to go dark! Instagram Winners - High Angle

High angle just like low angle gives a better perspective for your photography. Getting high up for your shot or shooting directly above even gives you a perspective different from the standard. It gets your composition a different shot from your norm and makes it stand out in a set of photos. From baby photos, to plane window shots, to cafes, and cars you guys did great getting off the norm!Winners this week were chosen by Roy and Toby. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_wide. After going down low and getting high it's time to get wide! Shooting at wider focal lengths allows you to get a image of everything in the shot, which can be hard at times. Instagram Winners - Silhouette

This week you guys honestly stepped it up a notch. It's the nice thing about silhouettes, by simplifying the photo it lets your mind fill in a bit. Raising an good photo to a top notch one with a level of mystery or emotion you wouldn't have otherwise. As much as we like to capture detail sometimes what isn't there can be the best yet for a photo.Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Toby. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_kaboom. Instagram Winners – Wood

Our world is made up of wood, and that's the exciting thing about having a open challenge is that it gives people room to think and be creative. Looking at it from a sense of nature, or entropy, would be one view point of the subject. While someone else could go with wood working and a project at work shot with sawdust or a finished project. Even to a handmade antique generations old that hold sentimental value. With wood this project was one to make it your own and show something of your style. There was no show this week Toby and I have picked your best photos. The weekly challenges are still going! Toby's DUAL Winners:

I loved both of these wood trail/boardwalk shots.  @kapechick has a simple shot but the wood of the path mixed with the all the young trees around makes this a very woodsy shot.  And @adamstewart similar boardwalk shot offering us a glimpse of green hills in the distance is excellent, love the way the path leads us off to the green and blue.  Nice work!!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BG9jlXyjw_I/https://www.instagram.com/p/BG5UodDuT9u/

Toby's Honorable Mention:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BG7W8_mN5-K/Love the wider shot here that shows wood from untouched to almost unrecognizable. Nicely composed and captured!

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BG8oEhLh-t4/Technically "reclaimed" by nature this set piece by Maritza of Hobbiton is a great focus for wood.  As Toby said the place is made to be photogenic. For one it's a great trip photo while focusing on an element of the scene rather than the grand scale of it all.  As for wood It's a great draw for the eye with good composition and naturally framed by the plants.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BG8FQOdGEqa/Wood as art in this case is a great way to show texture and a good repeating pattern. I like that Christye chose to crop in losing a bit of the face to get closure and frame out the carving. It makes for a strong photo and an interesting portrait albeit wood.https://www.instagram.com/p/BG9jlXyjw_I/?taken-by=kapechickBeing from Michigan we have trails pretty much everywhere. When you get a nice winding wood path like this it sets a scene. With the brush coming up and a leading line to the horizon it makes for a great focus for the eye to follow the trail.

Instagram Winners - Architecture

Trying to find beauty in buildings can be challenging at times and artful at others with the work of a good architect.  Often with buildings I like to shoot in ways that emphasize the repetition of the lines, being especially careful to line everything up nicely OR to shoot from a wild angle.  There was only the Patreon live show this week where Scott and I have picked your best photos.    Toby here - I just want to add that I had a really difficult time picking my favorites - there were a huge number of excellent photos!!

I don't love the quality of this shot and the fact that some of the end dock is cut off but I do LOVE the curve and framing AND the fact that this so nicely illustrates that architecture comes in all forms, even a dock that looks built of mostly driftwood.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFh8heHCucX/The perspective and the framing are prefect. The whole car is sharp, this is so difficult to do and you nailed it

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BGYMl3ljrrE/I love the movement in the curler, a real action shot. Nicely framed too.https://www.instagram.com/p/BGQ3PSnAMHN/Great panning action here. I love the colours in this shot and shooting wider really captured the scene

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BBS04fVKxP2/Planes are a great way to learn panning and how I got the technique down as well. The background balances well with the colors of the plane which is a coincidental bonus.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BGYMl3ljrrE/Using curling for a panning shot is a good way to think out of the box. Ben's managed to get the player in the photo adding a bit of context and depth to the background while keeping the subject crystal clear.https://www.instagram.com/p/BFh8heHCucX/Doing this at races is always a fun way to catch the motion and energy in the shot. I've done it at a few myself (and got yelled at in the process) which makes for a good shot that captures the thrill of the sport.

Scott's Winner:https://instagram.com/p/BF7ucp5EpYS/The curve frame is unique and perfect, I love the proportion split between to two subjects. Fantastic shotScott's Honorable Mentions:https://instagram.com/p/BF43rwXizNY/I love the way the frame and the shadow isolates the subject - great environmental portrait.https://instagram.com/p/BGGjDioB6Sj/The leading lines which then leads you to a framed subject are great, nice candid shot - very well doneRoy's Winner:https://www.instagram.com/p/BF5AosFiDX5/Shot in-front of the steps Justin would have a strong photo. Using the framing of the trees and stairs frames the bridge and draws more attention to it in a natural way.Roy's Honorable Mentions:https://www.instagram.com/p/BF43rwXizNY/Using a doorway is a great method of framing and Korey shot this perfectly. With added light dropping from the side it gives a nice fall off making the subject stand out from the background.https://www.instagram.com/p/-HcGC5nOGB/Well, on a positive note you can't say perfect timing doesn't help. Aaron's photo of this bird is a good use of a window frame to draw focus to his subject.

Instagram Winners - Shiny

This week the challenge was left to the patreon group and they chose shiny as your challenge for the week. With that you guys did a great job with finding the shiniest objects you could or being a bit creative with the idea. With Toby on a McKay Live trip there was no live show this week but Roy and Scott have picked your best shiny photos. The weekly challenges are still going! You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_framing. A bit of a TBT to our older non Instagram challenges on Flickr. Like always to enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Wednesday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_framing.So as Toby is in Cuba, you can still get a bit of advice for this weeks challenge from this Think Before You Click video on framing.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAtdC8fGbjc

Scott's Winner:[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BFyVverDJI8/[/embed]I love the angle these are shot at and the shadow cast really adds drama to the shot. Nice work!Scott's Honorable Mentions:https://www.instagram.com/p/BFpR0jAh6QI/I like the perspective of this - it popped out at me in the feedhttps://www.instagram.com/p/BF1VwjvgxYk/I like the way depth of field has been used and the clean background to highlight the subject. Nice detail too.Roy's Winner:https://www.instagram.com/p/BFd11Q-Sc3T/Peter did a good job taking a challenge and tipping it to an advantage. Using a lake to reflect and make a back lit portrait was a good job of thinking outside the box. And with that it's a great shot that follows the rule of thirds with a balance of the subject to the sun in the background.Roy's Honorable Mentions:https://www.instagram.com/p/BFtPkgfEzX-/This photo from Bob shows you should always examine your surroundings. Not everyone that shoots takes the time to notice the small things and this is a good example of just that. It's a nice balanced shot with a shallow depth of field that puts all of the focus on the subject.

Can't get more shiny then a bit of hidden treasure per say. Greg did a great job of finding a bit of shiny booty to photograph. Going for a shallow depth of field with the large gem was a good choice as it puts the focus on the forefront. A lot of people shooting product photography try to get the whole item in crisp focus when sometimes its best to put the showstopper in focus and let the rest fade out.

Instagram Winners - Spring

This week was spring, or a cheeky idea of if its not in your area at the moment for our international viewers. There were some good photos up and a few that went quite literal, in the best way.  With Toby on a McKay Live trip there was no live show this week but Roy and Scott have picked your best spring or "spring" photos. The weekly challenges are still going! You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_shiny. A patreon choice as Toby's off in Cuba go look for the shinies and get the best photo you can! Like always to enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Wednesday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_shiny.

Scott's Winner:https://www.instagram.com/p/BFfWDwoiDSz/I love the creative interpretation, the composition and reflection are excellent and the colours really grabbed my eye. Great work!Scott's Honorable Mentions:https://www.instagram.com/p/BFfDa7ryVrh/A great candid style shot. A moment of everyday life captured. I like the way the flowers have framed the subjecthttps://www.instagram.com/p/BFTrdsYScxl/Beautifully framed environmental portrait. The lighting is beautiful, you have eye contact and I like the way the tree over her head curves giving natural framing. Great job!Roy's Winner:https://www.instagram.com/p/BFiHj4GDg_T/Great composition and color. Flowers follow a third of the photo then contrast with the rocky shoreline. Gives a big spring burst of color to your photo.Roy's Honorable Mentions:https://www.instagram.com/p/BFfWDwoiDSz/I told Scott someone was going to be cheeky and put up a literal spring. Justin Lai has a great tabletop photo of a slinky with a well done reflection.  Somewhat tricky of a subject lighting wise but its done quite well.https://www.instagram.com/p/BFKd_qzOgj9/I'm in Michigan and located near one of the bigger birding areas in the state. So spring for me has to be birds. Vijaya has a great shot of a sparrow with a paper thin depth of field and nailed the focus. Composition is great as compared to a lot of photos this has the room to breathe and the bird is not crammed in the shot.

Instagram Winners - Negative Space

This week focused on using nothing to focus on something, #PRTV_negativespace. Your entries this week were awesome, you guys nailed negative space to a T.  With Toby on a McKay Live trip there was no live show this week but Roy and Scott have picked your best use of negative space. The weekly challenges are still going! You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s challenge #prtv_spring. Being that time of the year take a second to go outside and show us the best spring has to offer. Like always to enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Wednesday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_spring.

Scott's Winner:

I love the framing and simplicity of this shot. The clouds and interest and the bird has that negative space to fly into. Great shot!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFHhgoSnRjL/Scott's Honorable Mentions:I picked this because it's clever and shows a different interpretation of the original brief. Thinking outside of the box, very creative!https://www.instagram.com/p/BFPDpbgJQFS/

I love the silhouette here, the negative space draws the attention to the subject. Not just another sunset but one with real interest. Great composition.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFLtUtHknPf/Roy's Winner:Can’t get any more minimalist than this for sure. Becky’s use of the bay completely eliminates the background and with a long shutter exposure smooths out the water. Which leaves focus on this nice dead tree in the water starting at a rule of thirds point.https://www.instagram.com/p/BFMvyqbxD0N/Roy's Honorable Mentions:Using a shallow depth of field combined with an angle to isolate the grass allows negative space for the subject. This allows the child to become the main focal point as there is nothing to draw the eye away.https://www.instagram.com/p/BFQp60CrwBm/Then there’s getting low and letting the sky do the work. Christine has a good example of what a lot of new photographers have to learn. Your camera is not fixed at the height of a person and by shifting perspective this allows you to create that negative space yourself.https://www.instagram.com/p/BFP4eYAJ1_I/
