Instagram Winners - Flash

Some brighter subjects this week thanks to lighting with the #PRTV_flash Instagram Challenge.  Something you'll discover early on taking photos is you need more light. Either you get a faster lens so the sensor receives more light or you make more light of your own. The latter we focused on this week making a bit of creative lighting for great portraits, catching the action with a 2nd curtain, or even one that took things a bit too literally in a good way.Compounding on this week's challenge will flow into next week with a product Instagram challenge. Pretend you're shooting for a magazine and do a full spread of food lit by a softbox. Or aim big doing automotive photography, shooting a car at sunset, something from my background.  Any product, anyway, anyhow, and it's your choice which way you would like to approach the challenge. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_product.

And the team!Toby – @Photorectoby Roy – @RoyMcKeeIII Rose -  @Randomcreativeart

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPWlSbchdgT/Jane has a great photo with dead on exposure in a creative way making a neat story.  Flashes can be props for lighting effects or hidden in a photo easily to make on the spot lighting. In this case, you used that to your advantage creatively making a shot of reading a book turn a bit more magical and a shot to stand out.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPfZjrMBr0-/Krystal shooting a bit of a classic portrait with a twist makes for a nice shot of her daughter for this week's challenge. Bringing lighting closer to your subject can create a vignette for your photos used to great effect in this photo. It gives quite the contrast to the wood grain background going black as it will light your subject up nicely to stand out.https://www.instagram.com/p/BPdqfADDxov/Alternatively, unlike Krystal's photo, you can get quite creative with multi light setups for portraits. Eileen has a neat shot this week using lighting to soften the face but harder light contrasting in the back as a hair light with a blue gel accounting for the color temperature difference. Professionally setups like these would be kept in a "look book" so you'll have your recipes down when you need them and samples to show your customers.

Instagram Winners - Textures

This week you went small with textures, something requested quite a bit when we called for ideas for the scheduled challenges. Like with the horse I reposted on Instagram sometimes people forget the details and often they can be the most important, or at least your best shot of the day. You guys had some great shots this week, I like that you went large as well as macro capturing texture of buildings as well as the small things.Your challenge for next week is flash, use your lighting equipment such as speedlight or strobes for photos specifically. Adding a bit of light on your subject always helps and it’s a good practice for your skills. Speedlights are not limited to people, you can use them for product shots or even wildlife so it’s up to you how you want to approach this challenge. Test your skills this week and share on Instagram with #PRTV_Flash.A bit lost or starting out? Checkout this video on Mastering your Flash- The Basics on YouTubeTo enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_flash.

And the team!Toby – @Photorectoby Roy – @RoyMcKeeIII Rose -  @Randomcreativeart

Toby’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPLZO7bhm4i/This is texture that tells a story- I love this still life shot that just happens to have so much texture, so much history in that texture - from the weathered wood to the rusty metal -fantastic shot!

Toby’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNrZkQlhqCC/Part of me want’s to hold my breath while I look at this photo - there is such subtle, fragile texture here- Love this macro! https://www.instagram.com/p/BPIrNAfjawf/This isn’t texture as I usually think of it but the detail and lighting here make this a very tactile photo and I can practically feel the fleshy orange through it all.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BO6-O5KDo93/When it comes to shooting texture going to those macro levels can pay off for a photo. Prerana has a great shot of a jute rope that is bundled loose enough it has a lot of nice strands coming loose for detail. Shooting sidelit in this case helped a lot as it puts a lot of contrast on the subject.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPNnJiRh938/The favored angles of one of my friends when it comes to trees this is always a great angle for getting that texture of the bark or moss with a nice bokeh. Keeping your focus point nice and close works great as it pushes the bokeh further giving your photo a long transition to the background. https://www.instagram.com/p/BNrZkQlhqCC/Being the season for it the weather makes a good time for shooting frost and snowflakes like this great shot from Tonya. Getting down to super macro levels you can get the detail in snowflakes getting to that point you can see the formation and texture of the crystals.

Instagram Winners - Resolution

A new year and a new you as they say. This weeks resolution Instagram challenge was simply to shoot your New Years resolution how it fits you. It's a bit of an introspective and a way to look at yourself this week shooting. Also a quick mention goes to @gjbarnard for making a cheeky 20:17 resolution post with a QR code to Photorec.tv.The next challenge is a popular repeat that was asked for when we called for suggestions, it’s your turn again to shoot close and capture the texture of a subject. It’s an interesting way of looking at things as you get a different view of the world and sometimes those details shots can be your best ones in a day’s shoot. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_textures.

You can follow Photorec.TV on Instagram at @Photorec.tv

And the team!Toby – @Photorectoby Roy – @RoyMcKeeIII Rose -  @Randomcreativeart

Toby’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BO6z6grBeyJ/I don't know if you did this in post or not but it's a neat flat contrast action look. I love what your saying to be more playful and approach those projects out of your comfort zone. It's a fantastic way to look at things and grow in WHATEVER your doing.

Toby’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOvFqPTB5Ic/I like this image! It's kinda a cute fun image. You used a perfect fast shutter speed to freeze that confetti in place. I also made a little calendar reminder to go back and check every quarter to make sure you're keeping to that resolution!https://www.instagram.com/p/BOucp4TgR7c/I love that you want to use your ND filter and do a bit more traveling. If you haven't seen, DPR review had a poll in the last week or so of what your New Years resolution is and the top spot was more travel. I realize why, it's a lot of fun.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOucp4TgR7c/A lighthouse standing alone made me think of travel and it happens to be reading the caption that’s your goal. The lighting really helps contour the hills and give the photo depth. I’d suggest removing the contrail but other than that it’s a great photo.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOuME9cg15x/It always tends to end up a lot of cityscape photos are shot at dusk. Shooting the blue hour as the sun is falling will add a lot of color to your photo. Especially in the cases of a longer exposure. It makes for a nice shot and a fitting start to 2017 to find and create more great photos. https://www.instagram.com/p/BO5Qdztgz_k/Shooting above the clouds in Alaska makes for my last honorable mention and a neat view you don’t normally get to shoot. A somewhat harder shot as you're dealing with backlit subjects. Overall a nice way to take in the view for 2017.

Instagram Winners – HoHoHo

It was your chance to shoot the holidays with the Ho Ho Ho Instagram challenge. You could go festive with a tree or think outside the box and we had a lot of great entries. Shooting a theme like Christmas opens a lot of options for photos, lighting, and ideas so its a nice way to think creatively for a shot or find one.For next week the new challenge fits today with resolution. It's your chance to shoot your goal for the new year. A bit more creative for some depending on your goals but it should be an interesting challenge. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_resolution.

And the team!Toby – Photorectoby Roy – RoyMcKeeIII

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOh1-FqhTfI/The terrier is lit quite nicely against the tree making for a nice Christmas photo.  Being low light the faster aperture worked nicely and brings your dog out tack sharp while blurring the background well.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNoePuvhNCK/Going a bit out of the box with the biggest bokeh tree in london made for a great concept. Shooting out of focus makes for some interesting photos and it's a neat idea for a holiday staple.https://www.instagram.com/p/BOYBEBkhZa7/Getting a slight bit of elevation and shooting the whole scene makes for a great shot. Going over the water adds the reflections of the lights making the photo a bit busy but a really nice scene overall.

Instagram Winners – Cold

It's getting chilly outside and is a perfect time to shoot that weather for the cold Instagram challenge. Especially considering a large number of fair weather photographers out there that miss this great season. You can hunt for color, go for an all grey scale shot with this snow, or even a family photo of the kids playing outside. It’s the time of the year for your Christmas shots and this week it’s your challenge. As everyone does not participate in Christmas you can upload anything of the holiday season or your respective religion.  Merry Christmas, now get shooting! To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_hohoho.

And the team!Toby – Photorectoby Roy – RoyMcKeeIII

Toby's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOXxM1TBJWW/Frosty bits on the kale just pops with that color. The frostiness of the kale makes me feel cold and it works perfect for this challenge.

Toby's Honorable Mention:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOP5pZqDh76/I love this tree! The post processing is great with a crisp black and white. The composition is perfect with the straight on shot of the tree cropping the buildings.https://www.instagram.com/p/BOD_NcyhTSd/I love this photo from Ursula. I saw this and it made me smile, it's got a great balance with a tall flag and teeny tiny snowman.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOKW8HbjfVA/A nice chilly fit for the winner of #PRTV_cold. The black and white with a low contrast really help to push the feeling of the photo. I do tend to think though a shorter aspect ratio would really help to focus the shot.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOM9aj3Djgu/As I said, cold was not limited to snow and Tony did just that. It’s a good out of the box shot and the color contrast between the flower and berries works quite well.https://www.instagram.com/p/BOMowMUh6hO/Roger makes it in on a edited image using a tutorial making the rounds on social media. In this shot he’s transformed a grassy scene into an icy one with a bit of editing making for a nice frosty photo.

Instagram Winners – Color

Sometimes it pays to be bold and let that color be strong and saturated. That was the goal this week with the color Instagram challenge. It's difficult to hit that right balance but sometimes we can find color for the best shots, especially with the winter season at the moment. Light painting with a Christmas tree,  diffused light, advertisements, and dyed hair made for great out of the box choices and you all did well!As it’s currently 17F out it’s time to photograph the cold weather, or ice cream for the Aussie’s. Cold is a temp, a feeling, so shooting it can be a bit subjective and abstract, thinking out of the box. So it’s your turn to get a bit chilly for great photos like Toby had to in Alaska. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_cold.

Toby's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNzfgNEjxmu/I love the two solid colors that dominate the image!

Toby's Honorable Mention:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BN5fVkfjjZf/The color against the lack of color and the unique angle - looking almost straight up which makes this stand out to me.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BN4r5ALjJpN/Lightning is always a great subject for color. You’ve got a bright flash that lights up the clouds but the different types of lightning can give different colors to the clouds. Plus being over the city you get the contrast of the yellow city lighting from the older sodium lights. It’s a great shot with nice contrast for that pop of color.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOEc2JzDdrh/Traditional bright colors with the lighter blue sky make this colorful boat a great shot. Cropping the boat to focus on the paint works well albeit I’d like the shot framed a slight bit more to the left to follow the rule of thirds better. https://www.instagram.com/p/BOC94PnjTDT/Sunsets make for a great subject but also a great backdrop for Edgar’s photo. The duller color of the city has been saturated a bit and with the nice warm background via the sunset it really makes the orange show through for the photo.

Instagram Winners – Passion

This week we wanted you to show what your passionate about with PRTV_passion. Being the subject of passion, captions were important this week to give your shots a bit of context. It was a chance to show your work, the thing that makes you pick up that camera in the first place and we had some interesting entries this week.As a note, there are some entries that while good are from April or even earlier in this weeks challenge. As it’s a weekly challenge we don’t expect you to shoot exactly on the week, we even have a schedule up, but being relatively around the time of the challenge should count for something. Please try to at least use a somewhat recent photo and not one of your best shots from a year ago.For the next challenge we want to see the color POP in your photos! Winter at least for the northern hemisphere tends to be a bit on the drab and dreary side it seems like which makes for a great time to hunt for color, especially with Christmas decorations coming up. It’s there if you look and makes for some photos that can really stand out. Whether you create a shot or go find a colorful scene it’s up to you and we can’t wait to see what you come up with next Friday.  To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_color.

Toby's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNx3ZbfA0dc/?tagged=prtv_passionKaren Davis is my winner, when you go to her feed, one she's bundled up and two she has a ton of bird photos. Often I see in my feed her photos, capturing almost every day with these birds in that early morning sun. This eagle is a great shot and what you love to shoot.

Toby's Honorable Mention:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNqHdtLAQIN/This shot immediately caught my eye - lovely tones and while I already know Jeremy is passionate about Alaska and snow sports - checking his feed reinforces that - this is a guy that gets out in all conditions and gets the shot.  https://www.instagram.com/p/BKzAqQ-Aq4i/Justlai87 has a shot where we got two for one. You had passion to wait it out and get two shots through the day. I'd love to see more stripes with time throughout the day.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNqHdtLAQIN/More Alaska this week with Jeremy’s shot of the mountains from Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau. It’s a great shot with the cool tones of the snow contrasted at the top by the sun just hitting the tips of the mountains. Fitting for passion as Jeremy is out often shooting sport photography and landscapes along the way.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNxCy0UhZwT/Street photography nails a passion many photographers have as there's just something to hitting the city for a photo and just catching what you can along your way. It’s a nice shot focused on the crowd, going for a black and white portrait certainly helped your shot. https://www.instagram.com/p/BNxbsB9BXZb/As I’ve got a certain 11yo that goes shooting with me occasionally it’s great to see the world through someone a bit younger. You caught a nice candid shot that catches the moment well with some good composition.

Instagram Winners – Indoors

Shooting indoors is a chance to really think creatively and narrow down a plan for your shot. Traveling for your photos is nice, a great change of pace, but hitting up somewhere familiar is always a challenge. From Lego's to family snuggles and interiors we had a mix and it's great to see people thinking differently about their shots, your guys did well this week. For next weeks challenge it's your passion up for the subject with #PRTV_passion. No this isn’t about lovey dovey photos, unless that’s your thing then go ahead. We want you to shoot what you're passionate about. This can be shooting with a wildlife photo and a caption that shows why you love shooting animals. Or it can be a shot about the project you're currently working on like Patreon member Zoe Strimbeck’s rocket launches for example. And yes, even shooting your significant other counts. If you're doing work, a hobby, or with someone you love it should make you smile and we want to see what all of you are passionate about. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_passion.

And the team!Toby – Photorectoby Roy – RoyMcKeeIII

Toby's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNUtOHrA_5I/They have captured an interesting space so perfectly symmetrical and balanced the exposure nicely as well. Though I would be curious to see what a vertical perspective control did to see if we can get rid of the leaning away shelves noticeable at the beginning.

Toby's Honorable Mention:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNal5trhlQv/What a sweet moment captured with great lighting- I might suggest cropping out the cord/light.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BNYBCZXAZPY/It's a nice clean shot, part of shooting indoors is that your not limited to what you see in the house. Johnny took an image, realized how to pull it off and went to work making this great shot.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEbsSMJujlW/A bit of interior photography is on the nose but this is done well. Considering the mixed lighting its lit nicely and you pulled back allowing the building to frame your shot.https://www.instagram.com/p/BNVPJ7xhROD/Thinking outside the box made for a great subway B&W shot. Always a popular topic to shoot, you did well composing the photo with a centered portrait and not going super wide for the shot as it follows the lines of the shot better.

Instagram Winner – Thankful

Being that in the US it's Thanksgiving this week it was fitting for a Thankful Instagram Challenge. With the holiday I know everyone is tied up so thank you to those who entered, you did great as always. Glad to see some new faces enter this week and I hope you continue the weekly challenges. As it’s getting a bit colder out for us in the Northern United States (35F in Michigan atm) it’s a good chance to shoot indoors. Something a lot of people discount is the chance to shoot in their own home. Whether that means family portraits, pets, tabletop photography, interior photography, or something out of the box it's up to you for next week's Instagram challenge #PRTV_indoors.To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_indoors. Instagram Winners – Golden Hour

The Golden Hour Instagram Challenge was a chance to shoot during the best time of the day. A callback from Toby’s Time of Day & Quality of Light video. Great landscapes and amazing portraits were something special this week and came out great with that golden light. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_thankfulHere in the US it’s Turkey Time; family, food, friends, and the fall weather makes it a good time to reflect on what you're thankful for in your life. Toby's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKy3xO0glMZ/Fantastic shot - love that you choose to capture these horses backlit - the warm sun perfectly outlines their bodies, catching all that hair.

Toby's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BH3uMYcgNuH/The warm tones, the sharp glass - it is all a lovely contrast and capture.https://www.instagram.com/p/BBIDZi0NgKQ/Love the leading line of the waves, the misty/haze of the distance and everything is bathed in warm light.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BH3uMYcgNuH/Aidan’s shot focuses on quality of light with a nice golden bokeh from the light hitting the leaves in the background. The soft lighting makes the glass exposed well and focuses on the sand grains falling. Nice shot!

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BM9aB5ahs1L/Golden hour is the best chance to shoot portraits in soft warm light without faking the shot or using a lightsource. Shooting under a overhang made for a nice touch as you can control the light and it give the background a nice repeating pattern.https://www.instagram.com/p/BBIDZi0NgKQ/Joe’s landscape nails golden hour on it’s head freezing the action with a nice warm glow to the shot. Cutting off the sun partially and catching the wave coming in made for nice touches to a great photo.

Instagram Winners – Freeze Motion

Having a technical challenge with Freeze Motion got you going for higher shutter speeds to really lock that motion in place. It's a handy skill to have so you can switch when needed to catch subjects moving a lot faster than your average or just freezing a moment. Like always we had a great assortment from wildlife to portraits and planes. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_goldenhr. Get out early or later in the day for that perfect soft and warm golden hour light. Toby's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFiElF_tDbt/I love this shot, it's pin sharp tip to tip. You captured the motion really nicely and I love this shot. Compared to Roy the green is very green but it's still a natural looking shot.

Toby's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJteip8DyY5/It's a bit messy, grainy, and oversaturated for my taste but holey moley you caught the action. It's a bit crazy, where's the rider? You froze the spray in place and you can see the individual drops.https://www.instagram.com/p/BMpFnAXBztQ/I picked angry_runner for the action sequence of post processing nightmare for this great shot. It's pretty cool!

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMjjFVFhJlI/Doortje has a tabletop drop shot for a splash which is a really nice way to practice your freeze motion photography. Using a faster aperture is a nice touch as it adds to the scene and really throws some of the drops out of focus. Just remember when using a reflective cup to clone out some of the reflections for a cleaner photo.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCntxJ2HMRr/Jberendtphotography has a nice frozen shot of an apple “falling”, it’s a nice posed composition and makes for a great fall scenic shot. https://www.instagram.com/p/BFiElF_tDbt/One of the great things freeze motion can work on is birds and wildlife in general. Using that faster shutter speed insures you get that crisp shot to freeze the bird in the moment. It could do with slightly less saturation though as it's a bit strong at the moment.

Instagram Winners – Halloween

Being the week of Halloween we just had to make the challenge #PRTV_halloween. Pumpkins, figurines, costumed portraits, and more this week fit the mood perfectly. It gives us an excuse to be a bit more creative with shoots using a mood, or fitting someone in a costume. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_freezemotion. It's time to practice your technique by freezing the action with fast shutter speeds. Something everyone always dismisses but it's a handy to know how when you need it. The subject is up to you whether it be sports, kids playing, or a tabletop DIY like water drops. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_freezemotion.

Guest: Steve Scurich

Toby's Winner:

[embed]https://www.instagram.com/p/BMPHJo5gDux/[/embed]It's a really cool shot.  The focus is great and just thin enough that the horns go in and out of focus.

Toby's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMO0kkwgCxH/Fantastic job with this macro, the framing and silhouette in this light is super cool.https://www.instagram.com/p/BMJGDKagt39/This makes me think of The Nightmare Before Christmas with a ghost and it's a cool, creative, shot.

Steve's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMO2mOKA-Ql/As a kid the creepiest part of Halloween was the Sleepy Hallow, headless horseman story. I like the desaturated look and it gives that spooky vibe. The small branch by the cape is the weak point that would make the photo stronger if cloned out.

Steve's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMPafJOjmch/I love this one, the lighting is great. The contrast between the fake face but real eyes bring the spooky vibe. Albert Einstein is haunting us!https://www.instagram.com/p/BMPHJo5gDux/I love the focus on her eye and the horns coming right at you make for a great photo.

Roy’s Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMPHJo5gDux/It's a great portrait and you nailed the focus on this shot.

Roy’s Honorable Mentions:

Join the dark side, we have cookies! It's a great example of a blackout portrait. Being a spooky Halloween shot the black dropoff works otherwise next time just put a reflector up to his left to put light back on his figure.https://www.instagram.com/p/BMXizNthIKA/As I said while sharing this on Instagram, not everything gets done in post. Instagram Winners – Seasons

With the leaves changing it was up to you to shoot the season with #PRTV_seasons. You shot the entire forest, a single set of leaves, and even birds this week for a nice set of photos. It seems relatively simple to shoot color but when you get out there the composition can be tough and you have to think on your feet. Just like Toby's post on Facebook a bit ago in New England finding a few leaves to shoot as a detail shot. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_halloween. It's time again for Halloween so send us your spooky shots, or your daughter dressed up as Elsa for the billionth time. it's up to you so think out of the box!To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #PRTV and #PRTV_halloween.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BL7lRPZAe9G/I wish it was a bit more centered but I like the thought and color muting the yellow stripe.https://www.instagram.com/p/BL4hxnGge8h/People always miss the tree through the forest, it’s a nice fall detail shot.

Instagram Winners – Backlit

The backlit Instagram challenge #PRTV_backlit is a way to get people to think before they shoot. A lot of people starting out take a photo based on composition but tend to forget about the quality of light on their subject. Some very high quality photos this week, really, and you guys managed to submit a bit of everything thinking outside the box for ideas. You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_seasons. Fall color was the plan but as some have mentioned it's not really fall color in Australia, or even Texas really for that matter. So instead we want you to show us your season weather you go pumpkin spice for lack of color, shoot a fall landscape, or even a spring one for the Aussies. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #PRTV_seasons.

Scott's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJx8Oafhl-5/Great timing, light, and composition for a great shot with a lot of character.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLZBLcRBwSh/Like you said, sometimes waiting a spot out for a photo can make for the best ones!https://www.instagram.com/p/BLtiGxYh-nk/Here at Photorec cat's are always a winner, you got a good shot with a bit of action and didn't clip the shadow.

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLw3-UbgE6b/J.Berendt Photography might be a bit of a mermaid addict but it works out this week for a backlit photo. A nice pose and expression for your model while you left enough foreground to lead up to her leaving the horizon slightly above the top rule of thirds line. Have to remember rules are meant to be broken as they are guidelines you learn from, not hard and fast laws.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLrntDRByUL/While admittedly the photo I have is quite bad compared to this one and taken on a cell phone while hunting this is what I thought of for the challenge. You did good capturing the light rays while letting in enough ambient light to properly light up the trees.  I like you left composition a bit low to catch the color in the grass and raise the ground's level up a bit in the photo.https://www.instagram.com/p/BLnA3oEjD0D/It's a great wedding photo this week by Angie Cruz Photography. You did a nice job getting that "glow" everyone wants in their photos, even if we know its backlighting. It's a great posed shot while you left the aperture shallow enough to just start getting the bokeh balls in the trees. Being me that one brown leaf in the side needs cloned out but I'm the most picky of the three of us at Photorec.tv.

Instagram Winners – Still Life

Still life was your challenge this week being a bit more on the artsy side of things. It's definitely a challenge depending if your more right brained or left brained which is why its open to found still life. Overall it's a harder subject but you guys managed to get entries in that fit the bill.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #PRTV_backlit. It's time to watch your lighting and aim for a nice backlit photo. Whether it's people, animals, objects, or buildings if you can find a bit of nice backlighting to take your shot it counts! To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #PRTV_backlit.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLUsi95j1Dg/You found a nice toy plane to shoot at the park that makes for a nice scene.https://www.instagram.com/p/BK6sYXYgzbz/A bit of nice lighting to select out the berries and make for a composed still life worked well.

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLjAyt9B_ah/A nice classic example of a still life. I really like the old globe you added to the theme of the travel shot.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLgzCCdhy7J/It's a bit more of an abstract piece but fits into the still life mold well.https://www.instagram.com/p/BLhn2TWlErl/It's good lighting and the variation of levels/color work for the shot.

Instagram Winners – Gear

You had a chance to show off your gear this week for the Instagram Challenge #prtv_gear. Shooting what you've been carrying around all this time to get those great photos. To be creative with it for a challenge, a bit of product photography, or behind the scenes of a shoot. From family shooting photos, to literal gears, and going underwater we like to see your creativity every week.

Winners this week were chosen by Scott and Roy for the challenge.

You can find all the past challenges on the PRTV page along with next week’s Instagram challenge #prtv_stilllife. Still life photography is a bit more on the artsy side than most are used to but another great way to get out of your comfort zone.  Typically an inanimate object such as food, or basically anything not moving, taken on a table is what pops in everyone's head when it's brought up. Which is true, and quite challenging in that you have full control of light, composition, subject, etc. literally making the image. For those like myself that are better at finding things there is also found still life. It can be a challenge itself and a bit off the standard as compared to typical still life your finding a moment and not in control as much as the former method. To enter post your photos on Instagram before noon next Friday with the tags #prtv and #prtv_stilllife.

Scott's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ_4JH-jeLs/A great behind the scenes shot capturing the moment well with the composition just catching the sun while letting the camera sit opposite in the frame.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLQTuOEjhFt/Aperture was key in this and you did great. It separates the camera with space while not losing enough detail where you can't distinguish the background.https://www.instagram.com/p/BLQ09wygtwY/?taken-by=jberendtphotographyA view from the models perspective, in this case mermaids. It makes for a great shot while leaving the space around the large underwater rigging to somewhat draw the eye center.

Roy's Winner:

An army of camera's thanks to McKay live (www.mckaylive.com). It sets a great scene shooting the mountains and adds to the story from your trip.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLKBgq_jGho/I thought someone might try to do something like a bokeh night shot with their camera in this manner. I never thought about a phone but with today's technology it is the gear we use to shoot with on the go. It's a great shot capturing the subject while creating a bokeh background in the process.https://www.instagram.com/p/BLPm-j9BgFc/Angry_runner has a bit of a family shoot for this weeks challenge and I like how it turned out as well. A gear photo with a little photographer in the making.

Scott's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BK2BLl2hTQH/It's a good family shot of the dolphins and you managed to get a composition down even with them moving.

Scott's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BK-1uj3jUkA/Toby loves reflections so we had to pick this shot as a honorable mention. You thought out of the box and managed to catch the family in the glasses, neat!https://www.instagram.com/p/BK1c38agcVS/A nice family shot on vacation, having the flower popped up in front made for a nice touch.

Roy's Winner:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BBjGgPgCADG/A rare moment where the entire family managed to listen for the camerawoman, and no one blinked! It's a good top-down group photo that shows your family.

Roy's Honorable Mentions:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BK2BLl2hTQH/I like when people managed to think out of the box and a pod of dolphins is that for sure. You did a good job of following the rule of thirds even though its a moving subject.https://www.instagram.com/p/BK-2Qyij_TM/If it can't be shot with LEGO's it just can't be done. Nancy has a nice shot of the "family" sitting around the broccoli trees.
