Things to Watch out for When Buying Camera Kits

As we've had more than a few people starting out ask, and sometimes buy, the questionable camera kits found online this article might help clarify a few things for any first time DSLR buyers. For most cases, with a few exceptions for the larger stores, you get the right camera with little or no warranty and an assortment of poor quality accessories. For the purpose of having an example to this point I’ll be using a recent eBay purchase from one of our readers.Grey Market ProductsFor a first time buyer noticing the word import buried in the details of a really good sale is not going to be something they’re looking for usually. Generally for some of the stores it’s often hidden well enough it would be easy to gloss over without knowing the implications and some stores don’t mention it at all. Imports are commonly referred to as grey market, a product imported from another country for a lower price then resold here bypassing proper import channels such as Canon USA and Nikon USA. While the practice is somewhat shady it’s completely legal and most of the time, but not always, the camera is the same as what you would get from an authorized store such as Amazon.

Note: If you've already made your purchase and wondering if your camera is legitimate call the manufacturer, they can lookup your camera by it’s serial number.

What does this mean for you? Officially you don’t exist meaning no support, repairs, and especially no rebates. Now in reality Canon COULD refuse to honor warranty in the USA but past experience suggests that they don't really care and if you have a warranty card with matching serial numbers you SHOULD be fine. There are two COULDS AND SHOULDS in there - it is a risk during the warranty period getting repairs. Basically this means you're assuming the risk that while they may fix your camera if it breaks under warranty, while unlikely there is the chance they won’t being grey market, which Canon and Nikon repair service can be expensive.Not all stores are equal and if you've been a fan of this site for awhile you’ll see we do post grey market deals from time to time. The benefit of larger companies offering grey market products such as Adorama, B&H, and some of the more legitimate eBay stores is that while you do get a modest discount you also get a decent warranty through their stores for service. You are getting your money’s worth with their warranty over smaller companies and in this case while its not the manufacturer directly they're going to be the best option if any issues pop up.For other smaller stores such as those found on eBay and Amazon its best to do a bit of research on the sale. First check if the store is an authorized dealer with the links below, they might say they are an official dealer but it’s worth a check. I've had a couple different people send in messages for help that bought cameras from an authorized dealer just to find out they are authorized, but for Canada or another country. If its not authorized locally that usually means its not a unit local to your area and technically grey market. The internet is a good source of info make sure to read the reviews, check online, and you can always ask us for help. When it comes to a grey market on eBay a SquareTrade warranty is not equal to a manufacturer warranty and while better than nothing they can be very difficult at times dealing with warranty issues.

Canon USA Authorized Dealer List | Nikon USA Authorized Dealer List

Yes grey market can be a good deal but for a first time buyer you're still better off buying from an Authorized dealer. For our reader it was unfortunate but the listing did show it was an import and lacked a warranty, albeit far down in the details and easy to miss. When you buy grey market its like buying a used car from someone in that you assume all the risk yourself. Starting out this also means you’ll have trouble with support as any questions or issues you have with your camera could be turned away.Included Parts and AccessoriesYes you’re getting a DSLR but before purchasing and when you get the camera you should check the included accessories listed with the camera against the manufacturer’s website. If you think you purchased from an authorized dealer the first hurdle would be the correct warranty card for your country, without it getting your camera fixed can be difficult. Checking the listing for issues can solve a lot of problems but after getting your camera its worth that double check for the correct manuals and manufacturer batteries as with some previous cases these items have been removed or replaced with inferior items.Check the kit lens! A lot of these cameras were bought body only so make sure you’re getting the proper lens. The Nikon D5300 should come with a new VRII 18-55mm lens which in the readers case was swapped for the older VRI lens that ships with the D5200, a lens which is not recommended if possible due to its photo quality. Take the time to check your lenses, a D5300 uses AF-S lenses and not AF except for manual focus. Kit lenses for the Canon Rebel line should be listed as STM.One of the issues you can have buying a unit of this kind is the battery charger, fortunately in this case the readers was swapped for a US charger but reading online about this listing not everyone got that luxury. The camera was meant for another country so it’s not a big surprise you're still out money for a charger in Nikon’s case, for Canon $4-6 for a 2 slot non-polarized power cord to plug in the charger. Unfortunately for someone starting out unless they can find one at a local store you’re stuck waiting for one in the mail with a nice shiny paperweight after that partial battery charge dies.“Free” ExtrasThere's no such thing as a free lunch, if your kit comes with 3000 items yet still costs the same as an authorized camera from B&H things don’t exactly add up. A memory card, cleaning cloth, bag, and maybe an extra battery makes a decent starting point. Starting out most of the accessories they offer are nice and shiny but they are also cheap items, most of these are less than $10, with negligible quality in most cases. While I won’t cover all the accessories in the kit I’ll hit a few of the frequently asked ones and provide alternative options. While the recommended options might be a bit more expensive the quality is worth the price to get good items the first time.

	Nikon 70-300 F/4-5.6 AF LensThe big extra in this kit that doesn't fit is the Nikon 70-300 AF lens. The seller did list all the camera bodies that did and didn't auto focus with this lens, they just didn't mention the D5300 isn't one of them. Having no auto focus for this telephoto would be a bit of a pain and isn't something a first time buyer is going to know. $159 lens by itself so with the older kit lens above and a grey market body it’s not hard to fit it under the budget of an authorized D5300 price. 	UV FilterUnless you live in a desert or dealing with touchy kids you don’t need a UV filter  just get a hood for your lens. The majority of these filters in kits are such low quality that it will affect the quality of your photos because you're putting extremely cheap glass in front of your good glass. 	TripodActually my Dad has the exact one from the listing, it came with a spotting scope, not a DSLR. Unless you absolutely have to use this it’s just a pain to use compared to a decent tripod and its plastic build is not something to hold up to much abuse. Unless you're Toby and lose a Tripod leg getting a good tripod is something that's going to last you through multiple camera bodies and many years of work.For a decent budget tripod get the Dolica 62”, it might cost more in the short term but long term it works better and you don’t have to worry about it breaking. Later on when you get more established and want something a bit more light & portable for hiking and moving about you can always pick up a MeFoto travel tripod. 	Memory CardIf you buy a kit from Amazon or B&H depending on their current sales they sometimes throw in a Sandisk card for free. Unfortunately the listing doesn't say particularly what you get so it’s up to them, as for reviews its a grab bag situation, our reader received a non listed generic and Sony. If you need to pick any up you’re better off getting a couple 16-32GB cards over one 64GB card so not all your photos are in one basket. 	Padded Cases and BackpacksBags are definitely one of those things that is up to the person. Like the SD card above both Amazon and B&H among others occasionally offer a free bag of better quality. While these kit bags would certainly work there are much better options available, just make sure to get one with a bit of extra room for additional gear purchases or you've got to go bag shopping all over again. 	FlashIf you're starting out and it’s available use the built in flash until you get a grip on how to use the camera. At that point, get a Yongnuo flash, a good product the first time saves money in the long run. Otherwise spend more money and get the manufacturer brand which does the same thing for twice the cost. 	Cleaning AccessoriesDespite everything your lens can take a lot of abuse and even crack slightly without damaging your photos quality so you don’t need a lot of cleaning supplies. A lens wipe and cleaning solution work well, or if you're Toby a shirt. For dust inside the camera a rocket blower is handy to get it out but not needed right immediately. 	Card ReaderYou can’t really complain about a free card reader but you do have to be iffy about quality as the listed unit is not even USB 2.0 making your card load at a snails pace. 	Close-up lenses “Macro on the cheap” While we do get Macro questions quite frequently, and yes technically these would work, just like the cheap UV filter you are putting more poor quality glass in front of the lens. If you're starting out in photography managing what you have and learning to use the camera properly is better than playing with gimmicks. 	BatteryWhile not included in this seller’s kit it’s recommended you get an extra battery. For every battery you do get quite a few shots but having more than one as a backup or a long trip is a good investment. In colder climates especially the battery will die faster as the cold will sap the battery life. Fortunately for us 3rd party battery makers have stepped in so we’re not paying $40 for a battery.  The best answer is do your homework to get a authorized, warrantied camera, and if you get stuck send us a message on Facebook as we are happy to help. In this case it comes down to who are you buying the camera from and are you getting what you think you are paying for in the sale versus what actually arrives. Grey market can potentially mean a good sale but it creates issues down the road for getting service or repairs from the manufacturer. When it comes to accessories even small $10 items add up, when there are 18 of those and another lens yet the price is the same or lower than Amazon it’s time to ask questions. While this deal in particular wasn't a complete loss, it wasn't what the person asked for, which is shady at best and a warning for others.As for our reader, everything in the listing came in as described which is what he expected after messaging our page. Everything works and now he's picking up the basics but if I wrote this a bit earlier they probably would have went a different route.

Lenses - Prime and Macro
	A prime lens - If you don't have one you need one. I have 6 reasons you should get a prime lens this holiday season. If you are a Canon shooter I suggest the Canon 24mm (more here) in short it is a lovely focal length on your APS-C sensor Canons providing excellent quality and low light performance in a tiny package.  Want a different focal length, maybe one better for portraits? 	Feeling stuck in a photographic rut or maybe you feel like the area you live isn't particularly photogenic - a macro lens is a nice escape- turn the hum drum world around you into something amazing. 	LITTLE - Joby Tripod for GoPros and other small cameras (I successfully used mine with a Sony a5100)  The feet have strong magnets making this tiny tripod much larger if you have something metal to stick it on. 	MeFoto Travel Tripod - There are taller tripods, smaller tripods, lighter tripods but for me the MeFoto Travel Tripod and it's slight bigger brother the RoadTrip($189) hit the sweet spot of price, portability and performance. Canon and Nikon Rebates - OCT/NOV 2014

Canon has updated their bundles of DSLR bodies and Lenses to include the new 7D Mark II. Good deals on other bodies and lenses including the Canon 70D.  On the current models - 5D Mark III, 70D, 7D Mark II and T5i I suspect that these are the best prices we will see this Holiday season.  There is a chance of further discounts on the 70D and T5i but don't expect much.  Click through the image below for the bundles and savings.  Canon deals expire 11/22/14. Nikon photographers have rebates as well and they do include the new Nikon D750. Remember that lens prices fluctuate occasionally and deals this good are rare but we do not see general decline of prices like we do with camera bodies.  My favorite example? I paid $75 for the 50 f/1.8 in 2005.  It occasionally has been under $100 since then but not often. Similar to last year there are no deals(YET) on the most recent models - The Canon T5i and 70D, along with the Nikon D5200/D5300 and D7100 are all absent from the flyers.  This doesn’t mean that Amazon and B&H won’t offering some savings on these cameras it just means that the big box retailers won’t and any savings we do see from Amazon and  B&H will likely be small.   If you are willing to go with a slightly older model can net you some pretty significant savings. Spending less money on a body leaves money for a prime lens (or two) and I feel strongly that everyone should use a prime lens for at least a little while. (why prime lenses)I have listed a few deals below and in some cases Amazon is already beating the price. For the rest I predict Amazon will be matching those prices on Black Friday.B&H has some solid Holiday Savings - several items in addition to being heavily discounted are offered with 4% rewards.  Not an insignificant savings.

P&S Black Friday Deals

Best Buy will be offering the SX280 for $199. Amazon is currently selling it for $215- Quick review - one of the most affordable pocket-able zoom cameras out there. A good value and I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon drops this price further.  The SX line has seen some serious discounts at Amazon in previous Black Fridays. $30 more at BB gets you a spare battery, 8GB SD Card and small camera case.

Walmart will have the White Edition of the GoPro Hero 3 for $199 and throw in a $30 gift card which could be used to pick up the GoPro Grab bag. Amazon is currently selling the White Edition for $199(same as Walmart minus the giftcard).  How does the White compare to the Black?  Fewer frame rates and limited to 1080P. Black can record all the way up to 4K. The GoPro family of cameras is now the number one selling camcorder in the world.  The video quality out of these tiny cameras is amazing, and they stay small even after sticking them inside the waterproof housing.  They do photos, time lapses and video - preview the image from your phone or tablet and start and stop recording - it is all pretty slick.  Downsides - battery life isn't great and that is being generous.  I have more thoughts on the GoPro Black Edition I picked up last month.     I need to put together a little list of stuff to buy goPro owners - the list of nifty accessories is quite long.

Costco will be offering the NIkon P520 for $299 - This includes 16GB SD card and carrying case.  Amazon is currently selling the P520 for $370 no extras included but honestly I would skip both and if you want a super zoom pick up the Canon SX50IS - Better quality in low light and Canon reliability.  Nikon makes excellent DSLRs but often struggles with P&S cameras and the P520 isn't very exciting.   Buy the Canon SX150IS from Amazon

Another Costco Deal - this on the more pocket friendly Lumix ZS25. Fits in the pocket but gives you 20x zoom.  Will be selling for $179 and includes some no-name SD card.  Amazons current price is $224.    Personally I would watch the SX280 Price - I don't seem the Lumix offering much over the SX280HS.

DSLR Black Friday Deals

UPDATE: As far as I can tell this was a bait and switch or incorrent pricing. Rakuten is NOT offeirng the T3i at this price, only the T3.  Amazon has now dropped the price of the T3i with 18-55 and SD card + Bag for $449Rakuten (formerly Buy.com) will have the T3i with 18-55 IS II lens for $389.00 - If you are on a tight budget this really is a solid deal. Remember this is the same sensor that is in the T5i - and you sacrifice touchscreen, easy autofocus during video but the quality output will be the same and that leaves you some room to add a nice prime lens. See my list of Recommended Canon Prime lenses.  Amazon is currently selling the T3i for $449- that does include free SD card and bag.  There are a few cheaper Canon T3 options floating around out there - in general I think the few extra $ for the T3i is worth it - you get an articulated screen, a better sensor and more focus points plus burst a faster burst rate.UPDATE - Amazon is matching the BestBuy Price. D3200 with 18-55 and 55-200 + SD card and Bag for $496Bestbuy(ugh) will have the Nikon D3200 with TWO lenses for $499.  This same D3200 bundle costs $684 on Amazon. The D3200 sensor is excellent and although I do miss the articulated screen of the D5200/D5300 the camera is beginner friendly and offers the absolute best quality at that price point.  I still strongly recommend you consider a prime lens like the Nikon 35 f/1.8 - adding this lens to your collection lets you go light and simple when you want and will let you MUCH better low light photos and those photos where the background is super blurred? SO much easier with the 35 f/1.8 because of that very large maximum aperture.SOLD OUTAnother pairing from BestBuy the potentially offers a great deal - the older but still excellent D7000 paired with the brand new 18-140 from Nikon for $799 - Currently this combo sells for $1400!!  Most places aren't even offering it as a combo - Scratch that - I can only find one other place in Canada selling these two together - quite strange. The D7000 has now been replaced by the D7100 but still offers competitive image quality in a higher performing body.  If you are trying to decide D5200 vs D7000? If any higher speed action photography will be in your future the speed and responsiveness of the D7000 will be very helpful.    I will have loads more to say about the 18-140 in the next few weeks - my review unit arrives soon. It is just a kit lens but Nikon badly needed an upgraded kit lens and the 18-140 seems to do a nice job on all these Nikons- providing the resolution the sensors need.  It is a convenient lens too - great for the travel photographer that doesn't want to carry a ton of lenses.   However if you are going to be serious about photography - maybe trying to make a few bucks - you will want to consider other options. See my recommended list of lenses for Nikon DX cameras. Ebay will have a retailer (my guess is Buydig) selling the 5D Mark III body for $2445 - This is a $400 discount over the current price of $2800 and it only recently hit that low. I expect stock to be low and go VERY quick.  If this is interesting to you you better sit on the http://deals.ebay.com/.

You skipped that part at the top where I said "so far no signs" and that has been true for past Black Friday/Holiday shopping seasons - The current models, the ones released in the last year often see little to no discounts over the holidays. We may see some nicer bundles but no crazy deals.  Both Canon and Nikon enforce, like Apple, minimum price laws and if the company isn't offering a big discount the stores definitely won't. What we will likely see are some great deals on accessories- this does not include lenses. Best Canon 70D Deal (Savings on Amazon & B&H vs Costco)

Add spare 55-250 STM lens for just $149!! This is an excellent deal for a versatile zoom lens. Costco deal is the same but comes with a crummy bag and SD card - The Amazon and B&H accessories are better and if you live outside of NY you don't have to pay sales tax with B&H PhotoNot sure if the 70D is right for you? In my review I have found it to be an awesome device for photos and video, perfect blend of features and pro level performance in a reasonably sized and priced package. Watch my Canon 70D Review.Costco is offering a bundled deal with the Canon 70D - Looks good at first glance but it has a couple of issues:

1. You can put this exact same bundle together on Amazon for almost $100 savings!! (scroll down for details)
2. The card they are bundling STRUGGLES TO SUPPORT the higher bit rate video files the 70D is capable of producing and slows down quickly when shoot RAW. See my full test chart of SD cards in 70D. Or just skip to bottom and buy the SanDisk Extreme 80 or 45s for better results.
3. The 55-250 Bundled is the older II version.  The new STM version would be worth your money if you plan to do video with the lens. In fairness Amazon is still bundling this lens too.  At this time the 55-250 STM (my review coming soon) needs to be bought separately.

On Amazon you can get the Canon 70D with 18-55 IS STM and the 55-250 for a savings of $105.  Add in the 2% rewards and in 35 days you will get $27.88 to spend on a spare 70D Battery or put toward a good tripod.  But more importantly those immediate savings need to be put toward an SD Card that WILL work well in your 70D.

• For a good camera bag for the 70D I recommend Lowepro SlingShot 102 AW or Case Logic SLRC-202 Medium SLR Camera Bag - I have more camera bag recommendations depending on your needs - just leave a comment below with the style you are looking for and I can provide some recommendations.
• As mentioned above the 55-250 bundled in BOTH the Amazon and Costco deals is the old non STM lens. The new STM lens will be MUCH better for your video work and better for photos too - image quality is improved.  (Buy the Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM Lens for Canon from Amazon)
