ONA Bag Brixton - Style without Sacrifice

ONA Bag Brixtonhttps://youtu.be/wxt1FA501AAChristina here with a review of  the ONA Brixton shoulder bag retailing at $439. My favorite thing about this bag is just how beautiful it is and how well it fits with my personal style. The antique cognac leather finish is extremely versatile in just about any situation. It has two brass buckles that provide easy access to your gear and whenever I want to use it as a lens exchanger, I simply leave the flap open to grab a lens quickly. When I’m out exploring and when I’m on a shoot, it blends in well and makes me feel pretty inconspicuous about the fact that I’m there to shoot - this works well for the my style of photography.ONA Bag InteriorBesides being a pretty bag, it’s also extremely well-made and functional. At roughly 10 by 13 inches it allows me to fit at least one camera body with a lens, plus three additional lenses and it has two huge pockets at the front that let me toss whatever I need to put away at any given moment. I particularly appreciate this because I’m often taking off lens caps and carrying clients’ things for them and it’s super helpful to be able to not have to look through tons of different pockets to find a place for things. It’s extremely well-padded, too so my gear feels well protected. It’s really comfortable - leather goods have the added benefit of molding to your body the more you use them and this bag already feels broken in after a couple of months.ONA shoulder padThere are a couple of things I wish were different about the ONA Brixton bag - The first is that it is heavier than other fabric/nylon camera bags I’ve used in the past, especially when it’s full of stuff. My other complaint is that the strap is a little bit long for my small frame. I’m petite at five foot one and I can’t seem to get the strap to be short enough for me to comfortably grab something while the bag is hanging off my shoulder and if I did shorten the strap further, it would move the shoulder pad off center and my shoulder would hit the metal buckle. I think I could be better off with the Prince Street, a smaller version of this bag, but I love the ability to put my 13” laptop in it and the Prince Street only has room for 11" and smaller laptops. If you’re at least 5' 4" though, don’t worry, you shouldn’t run into this problem. So to wrap up this short review, It’s safe to say that it’s become my everywhere bag. I’ve taken it on day trips, long-distance trips, and wedding and portrait shoots and I love it. Style is as important to me as function and this bag certainly checks both of those boxes and if this particular bag isn’t for you, ONA has a huge selection of other great bags to meet your needs.Upsides to the ONA Brixton

  • Exceptionally well made
  • Perfect amount of pockets - not too many you end up searching for stuff but still enough to keep organized
  • Gear is well padded and protected
  • Looks better every day

Downsides to the ONA Brixton

  • Shorter than 5' 4" and you may find the bag hangs a little too low.
  • Heavy

News

Rokinon Announces Xeen – an Affordable Set of Cine PrimesRokinon is usually seen as the source for cheap lenses, which you get what you pay for, but they work fine enough. Now they’ve flipped the board and going for the $2,500 level lenses with a new set of cinema lenses in 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm. If anything it’s an interesting change and we should be seeing the lenses for sale starting tomorrow. Finding 50% Gray in a Photo for Better White Balance in PhotoshopWhile there are much easier ways to get white balance, using the curves layer allows for a nice way to fine tune the adjustment. Using curves helps when you have a 50% gray card photo to get the precise settings. Unfortunately having a 50% gray card shot isn’t always available or you don't have the time. This trick allows you to find the closest thing to 50% gray in your photo to get the white balance just right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0UncSBqn3kSenior Portraits, at Taco Bell?I guess the slogan in this case would be Quiero Fotos? Following on a bit of a joke Brittany Creech had her Senior Portraits taken at Taco Bell. Despite everything it breaks up the norm, made for a few fun shots, and even Taco Bell shared the photos. Another App to Crowdsource Wedding PhotographySo as an analogy for a wedding I was at last month everyone took photos on their phone but it took the bride and groom a month to get all the photos. In that case this app would do a bit of good as everyone’s photos get linked to an online album so people can see all the photos during the event. Unfortunately in the most likely case this is would make a wedding with one ‘Uncle Bob’ trying to take photos into a wedding with a dozen of them. Canon Ad’s to Get You Printing AgainPeople don’t print photos anymore. Which is a shame, but you might have seen Canon’s “Never Again” series of ads on TV lately. Fstoppers has linked all the youtube video’s to their article so you can see the entire set from the ad agency grey. With that get one for $50!You can pick up a Canon Pixma pro 100 from B&H for $50 at the moment. Use code PSWBH15 at checkout for $100 off and free paper on your purchase bringing it down to $300. With the current $250 rebate from Canon on the printer in the end you're down to $50. While normally these are a bit of a waste at $400 for $50 you can justify having it around as long as you have the room for it. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893738-REG/Canon_6228b002_Pixma_Pro_100_Photo_Inkjet.html?BI=4773&KBID=5287Drone Vs. FishermanYet again I’m not surprised for another week we’ve got a drone story… A drone is photographing a fishing pier and one of the fisherman manages to cast his line into propellers. Luckily in this case the drone managed to limp back to the operator and didn’t end up in the water.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrzU-MMBGIMWe Knew It Was Coming: Drone Has a near Miss with an Airbus a320 AirplaneDrone story x2! This time someone thought it'd be a good idea to fly a drone around a airport in Israel, specifically over the runway. Monday afternoon a plane in the process of landing had a drone pass in-front of it within 75-100 meters. The airport never did catch the operator but there's a reason this is Illegal in the US as its dangerous and risky for everyone involved.

Tip of the Dayexposure

When printing photos compared to seeing them on screen they will seem darker in comparison because they are not backlit. When printing it is best to raise the photo’s exposure by a 1/3 stop which is quite easy in Lightroom. In the library module exposure adjustments are relative, not absolute, meaning they raise the setting by a 1/3 instead of setting it to 1/3. It's an easy way to raise each photos exposure without having raise each photo manually to export for printing. To save the original photos settings select your photos to print and make a new collection with virtual copies. When making a collection select your photos and make a collection as normal but check 'Make new virtual copies’ and click create. This duplicates your selection with virtual copies so you're not affecting the exposure of your original photos.collection

Sony a7R Mark II in Iceland

I have now been shooting with the Sony a7R Mark II (a7Rm2) for most of the day here in Iceland (today was the meet everyone, wander about town and get settled into the hotel day, tomorrow (Aug 7th) we head out for some seriously beautiful landscapes.HARPASee more images from the Sony a7R IISony a7R II

  • AF is very good and improved over earlier Sony models
  • AF with Metabones is also excellent though I have seen some confusion, just once actually in lower light- will be testing more.
  • Image quality is excellent
  • Feel in the hand is wonderful
  • The control dials for aperture and shutter speed are smallish and I wish they were bigger and placed more prominently
  • 4K video - looks good, I have just shot a few minutes of clips, more soon on this.
  • Battery life is terrible, but you can use the camera while charging - so walking around with a USB battery attached to the camera looks silly but gives you much better battery life.

See more images from the Sony a7R IIIf you think you want one now. Put in a preorder now. B&H has over 1,000 preorders and only got a couple hundred in- most camera stores seem to be getting them in ones and twos.Order the Sony a7 R Mark II from B&H Photo VideoRecommended SD Card for Sony a7 R Mark II

In Case You Missed It, Variable ND Filter vs Non-Variable ND

If you’re looking for longer shutter speeds to get a dreamy effect in water or trailing lights from traffic in the city a ND filter is your best bet. While a simple 10 stop ND filter works for some things it can be a bit strong for your shot. Check out Toby’s article and video this week about variable ND filters vs non-variable.http://photorec.tv/2015/08/variable-nd-filter-vs-non-variable-nd/

A few higher end lenses from Nikon announced this week to fill out their existing line up. A new copy of the standard 24-70mm format, a fast 24mm prime, and a new long range telephoto. New Canon Flagship Camera to be Annouced as the EOS-1D X Price Drops

In the take with a grain of salt today the new rumor is that a new DSLR replacement for the current high end EOS-1DX is coming due to recent price cuts. Considering the current model was announced in 2011 it is time for an upgrade but don’t expect much until 2016.

Whoa, This Full-Frame Camera Shoots at ISO 4,000,00020150730_me20fsh_front

Canon has a new video camera with a bit of a twist, a sensor with 4 million ISO. The Canon ME20F-SH is a 2MP camera that has a MSRP of $30,000 so it’s being marketed towards high end film. In the end for us though it's technology that, hopefully, might trickle down so we might see benefits for DSLRs in the future.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPuT7R7JVxk

Fujifilm Officially Announces the X-T1 IR (Infrared) Mirrorless Camera

Fujifilm announced a new camera that also has a special sensor, in this case it can see ultraviolet and infrared. Quite useful for professional work that needs such frequencies such forensics, healthcare, and scientists. While it can be used for some day to day IR photography one big benefit would be Astrophotography as it can capture more available light than a similar model without infrared. Unfortunately for all the good it does this camera is currently spreading on the news as technically it may be able to see through clothes.

Good-Bye Polarized Filters: Olympus Patents Polarized Sensor Technology

If you happen to like polarizers, but are annoyed carrying around more filters, Olympus might have a solution. While there isn’t anything solid out yet they’ve filed a patent for a sensor with a built in polarizing filter. As Sony has filed for a different but similar method previously it’s something that we hopefully might see in the future.ozo-press-photo-black2

Nokia Reveals Ozo, a Futuristic New Camera for Filming Virtual Reality

While its design makes me think it’s going to start glowing red and say hello Dave, Nokia’s new virtual reality camera Ozo might be interesting. As multiple companies such as Google, GoPro, Samsung, and Jaunt are in the field everyone wants a bite of the new virtual reality market. As its priced in the five figure range Ozo is made for professionals for use in films, gaming, applications such as maps, and education. Whether it sticks around or not is for the future to decide but with how many variations are in the market one model is bound to make it.

What Adobe's Big News About CS6 & Acr Means for You

With the latest update to Photoshop Adobe stuck another nail in the coffin of those using the CS6 version to skip paying for the cloud. Adobe killed updates to Adobe Camera Raw for Photoshop CS6 which in the meantime isn’t a large problem but it is a future one. As new gear arrives on the market CS6 can’t support you’re stuck with the free Adobe DNG converter to use RAW photos which kills a simple workflow.

Kentucky Man Who Shot Drone out of the Sky with Shotgun Arrested; Faces Two Felony Charges

Another day, another drone shot out of the sky story. In Kentucky a man thought a drone was spying on his daughter, at a 250’ altitude, so it had to go. Like most of these stories firing a shotgun straight up into the air, in the city limits, is not a good idea. In the end the pilot is out a pricey drone and the homeowner is looking at two felonies for damaging the drone and shooting in city limits.

KFC Has Created a Fried Chicken Bucket That Doubles as an Instant Photo Printer

KFC has been in a bit of a tech binge lately, earlier in the year in Germany their promotion involved adding bluetooth keyboard liners to trays in Germany to stop greased up phones. Use $3.5 Tube Guards for Epic Light Painting Photographytubes-03-670x446

In clever light painting, Eric Pare came up with a new and cheap idea for a lightsource. Using fluorescent bulb tube guards and a couple bright lights you can effectively make a large lightsource."Once you got [the tube guards], it’s really simple, you set your camera on a tripod on bulb mode, and you trigger by yourself using a remote. On these 2, I used 2x 300 lumens flashlights inside the tubes, and I simply created the shapes behind Kim. Exposure time: about 3 seconds."

Variable ND Filter vs Non-Variable ND

https://youtu.be/lJGmo4cS0s4The Genustech variable neutral density filter or fader lets you easily control the amount of light entering your camera. With a twist of the ring, you can reduce the light from 2 to 8 stops. This can be useful if you want to shoot at slower shutter speeds during the day- like a waterfall, ocean or crowded street or if you are shooting video and want to keep your shutter speed around 1/50 of a second and control your depth of field both lending to a more cinematic look.[himage]02_1-15 sec at f - 2201_25.0 sec at f - 22[/himage]Rollover to see the longer shutter speeds possible with an ND filterThe filter is a glass and aluminum construction, very well made with smooth rotation and the optical quality is excellent. Clear markings on the filter ring indicate the strength of the filter. I have been using the 82mm size for my 24-70 f/2.8 lens. You can stack additional filters with the front threads accepting 86mm filter size - larger to avoid vignette. One downside to the larger size, your lens hoods and lens caps no longer fit. They do offer additional sizes down to 52mm. B&H has the full list of sizes. So this sounds great - one affordable high-quality filter that gives you great versatility in the amount of light you block. There is a drawback and this is true of all variable filters, at certain strengths you can get a very noticeable X pattern in the sky. This makes these filters unusable in some situations.[himage]01_30.0 sec at f - 18I drew the white lines (in case that wasn't clear)[/himage][himage]02_15.0 sec at f - 18I drew the white lines (in case that wasn't clear)[/himage]The alternative is a non-variable ND filter which comes in various strengths. I generally recommend 3 or 6 stop for photographers looking to use in a variety of situations. You can stack ND filters though if you really want the ability to stack you should consider something like the LEE system which has very versatile setups. I have a link below to recommended sizes and strengths and will be talking about the Lee system after my Iceland trip.Recommended 3-stop filters (also labeled ND8 and 0.9)These will allow you to block 3 stops of light i.e 1/250 of a second to 1/30Budget: Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter (link to 77mm, make sure you purchase the correct size for your lenses)Premium: B+W 77mm 0.9 ND 103 FilterRecommended 6-stop filters (also labeled ND64 and 1.8)These will allow you to block 6 stops of light i.e 1/250 of a second to 1/4 of a second.Budget: Hoya 77mm Pro 1 Digital Neutral Density 64x Filter (link to 77mm, make sure you purchase the correct size for your lenses)Premium: B+W 77mm 1.8 ND MRC 106M FilterIf you want seriously long exposures in the middle of the day- the BIG STOPPER 10-stop ND filter is best.B+W 77mm 3.0 ND MRC 110M FilterAnd if you want control without using a variable - the Lee or Hitech filters are the way to go. Don't be a LAZY photographer

Many photographers want ND filters to get those more dreamy looking waterfalls or smooth water beach photos and if you find yourself at your location and you still can’t get long enough shutter speeds to get the look you desired you are probably being lazy and trying to photograph during the middle of the day when you have massive amount of light and the quality of the light is harsh and flat. Don’t be lazy - get up earlier when the light levels are lower and the quality is softer and more directional. Or just stay out till evening. For many years, I photographed loads of longer exposure waterfall photos without an ND filter.Learn more about circular polarizers - sometimes useful as an ND filter too.

Now we have what looks like a fantastic lens from Nikon - the only downsides? Price and Weight.

Fixed f/5.6- I expect this to be very sharp but it weighs more than the Tamron 150-600 f/5-f/6.3 which offers a little more range (at both ends) and is cheaper.  So how much sharper is the big question. We also need to put it up against the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary which is very similar to the Tamron.Preorder from B&H Photo Video. Shipping September 17th

Pay $100 more and get the Sigma f/1.4, it is a fantastic lens with 9 aperture blades vs 7 in the Nikon, not that that makes a big difference but I expect the Sigma is still going to come out on top and offers the faster max aperture.Preorder from B&H Photo Video. Shipping September 17th
