Adapting Lenses to Mirrorless Cameras

Screenshot 2015-07-06 10.10.19A trait shared by mirrorless camera systems, regardless of if they are micro 4/3rds, APS-C, or full frame, is that the flange distance, or distance from the mount to the sensor, is short in comparison to film cameras and DSLRs. This allows for the adaptation of lenses from other systems, including legacy glass. Adapters for almost any systems can be found, and are often extremely inexpensive*.*Higher quality adapters are available that can cost hundreds of dollars, but add features. Inexpensive adapters simply allow you to mount the lens from one system to another. When adapting lenses to your camera there are several considerationsOptical quality- New lenses have superior optical formulas and coatings to reduce aberrations and provide sharpness that stands up to modern, high megapixel sensors. Optical quality of and performance on modern sensors will vary.Adapter size- Depending on the system that you are adapting lenses from, the adaptor will add size and weight to your system. Leica mount lenses (M & M39 screw mount will be smaller in size. R mount Leica lenses use a larger, more traditionally sized adapter).Aperture control- Legacy/vintage lenses often have an aperture control ring on the lens. This allows you to use a cheap “dumb” adaptor and still have control of aperture. When adapting lenses such as Canon EOS or Nikon G lenses special, more expensive, adapters must be purchased that provides aperture control through electron connections.Focusing- Vintage lenses, for the vast majority, were manual focus to begin with and the technologies built in to the modern mirrorless bodies such as focus peaking and magnification make manual focusing an enjoyable experience (granted manual focus may not be an appealing option if you enjoy photographing moving subjects). Lenses with autofocusing abilities paired with adaptors with electronic autofocusing capabilities will provide limited usefulness. However focusing systems within mirrorless cameras continue to improve as does the technology in the adapters. Autofocusing capabilities will only get better (as promised in the A7rII).Exif Data- As inexpensive adaptors contain no electronic connections, no Exif data will be embedded in the files (focal length and aperture, ISO and shutter speed will be recorded as they are controlled by the camera).Cost- The cost of vintage glass will vary greatly. Many lenses are available in good condition for very little money on sites such as eBay. As adapting vintage lenses continues to increase in popularity, the secondary market for these pieces of glass continues to raise prices. Certain lenses are now being marketed as “rare," "hard to find," or "one of a kind" and the prices reflect that. Also, lenses made by Leica and Zeiss tend to reflect their higher initial MSRPs.Specialty adaptorso   Speed boosters – Reduce the crop factor and increases the maximum apertureo   Built in iris control – Adapter effectively has built in aperture controlo   Helicoid adaptor – Allows you to reduce the minimum focus distance of the lensPersonal ExperienceI adapt a Leica M mount Voigtlander 75mm f/1.8 Heliar to a Fuji X-E2 and Sony A7II. This is a completely manual lens with no electronic connections, however it is a fairly modern lens and is still sold new. Leica M mount lenses fall into the rangefinder category and have short flange distances, making their adapters, as well as the lenses much more compact. Even though the lens is physically compact, it feels very dense weighing in at 15oz.The lens is sharp, especially so when stopped down slightly. It exhibits fairly strong color fringing wide open, but gets better upon stopping down. The minimum focusing distance on the lens is .7 meters as is standard with most M mount lenses (older m mount lenses generally had a 1 meter minimum focusing distance). I purchased the Voigtlander VM-E close focus adapter (helicod apdapter) to mount this lens to the Sony A7II. This shortens the minimum focusing distance, but by no means allows for macro capabilities. When mounting extension tubes to attempt for closer focusing this combo vignettes even with only 10mm of extension tube.Shot with A7II with Voigtlander 75mm f/1.8Shot with A7II with Voigtlander 75mm f/1.8*I have read several articles that discuss using wide angle M mount lenses on digital sensors results in softening of the corners and vignetting filled with color fringing, but have no personal experience. With both the Fuji X-E2 and the Sony A7II, I utilize the combination of focus peaking and magnification to achieve focus. I use focus peaking to get my focus close and then use magnification to ensure critical focus. I will warn against relying too heavily on focusing peaking since it shows the entire focus plan rather than critical focus. For my uses, I do not miss autofocus provided with the focus assist aids built into the mirrorless cameras that I am using it with.Shot with A7II with Voigtlander 75mm f/1.8Closing ThoughtsAs someone who thoroughly enjoys experimenting with new gear, the experience of adapting lenses is a positive one. Having to manually focus helps me to slow down and think more about the photographic process. Adapting lenses is not a solution to all shooting situations or all photographers using mirrorless cameras, but it provides an opportunity for many to use great Scott Gabrielli July 4th, 2015

Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM Review

Want to WIN the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens? Just a few days left to enter. Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM vs the 50mm f/1.8 II, the 50mm f/1.4 USM and the 24 and 40mm f/2.8 STM lenses.https://youtu.be/w5EoXor3x44The new model is offered at the same price as the 50mm f/1.8 II with some important updates- metal mount, 7 aperture blades vs 5 in the older model, much smoother and quieter focus. Overall build quality feels significantly improved with the metal mount and tighter more finished looking construction. The f/1.8 II didn’t always produce the smoothest bokeh, at times it was possible to see the pentagon shape in the background created by the 5 aperture blades.   The new 7 bladed design does eliminate the pentagons and produces slightly smoother bokeh but the difference is slight.5 blades vs 7 blades apertureThe f1/.8 II version was notoriously loud in focusing and this became even more apparent when using it in live view with the Canon cameras offering continuous AF in live view. The new model offers STM technology which provides smoother, faster and MUCH quieter focusing. It is not silent like the STM kit lenses, it does still makes an audible sound that will be recorded by the on camera mic in quieter environments which is similar in performance to the 24 and 40mm STM primes.https://instagram.com/p/2_2uCENMOa/?taken-by=photorectobyClose focusing distance has been improved slightly which is a nice but again the difference is slight and still not as close as the 24 and 40.[unitegallery CloseFocusing50stm2]Image Quality remains about the same - at times the new STM version looks to be a tiny bit sharper, especially as you stop down from f/1.8 but if you have the original and you are only looking to get sharper images - I do not recommend upgrading to the new lens.

Canon SL2 (150D) Rumors, Near-future of mobile editing, & 4k Prints

Quick roundup of news coupled with my musings …

Canon EOS 150D / EOS SL2 / Kiss X8 Rumors

Northlight images is reporting that the SL2 will be announced sometime in August. This is a followup to the quietly successful SL1, Canon's smallest DSLR.   The SL2 is being described as a little 750D (t6i) without the articulating screen.Canon SL2 Rumored Specs

  • 24.2MP
  • 19 point AF
  • 4.5 fps
  • 1080/30p video
  • Hybrid CMOS AF III focus system
  • Fixed 3" LCD touchscreen
  • Wi-Fi + NFC

This is why I believe Canon moved the 750D/760D to a slightly larger size- they want to differentiate that line from the SL2 line coming in a few months.  Giving people a choice within the Rebel line. Nikon has just elected to take their D5X00 series smaller.   If they can get the rear dial like the new Canon 760D T6s on the Sl2 I would be VERY compelling to many Canon photographers already owning lenses and craving that smaller, mirrorless like approach.   Previous rumors have mentioned Canon switching to an EVF in the SL2 (This was also a rumor for the Canon 750D/760D series and it turned out to be false, I believe it won't happen in the SL2 either).SL1 is current $499 with 18-55 STM. Future of Mobile Editing

Adobe has announced that they will pull Photoshop Touch from the app stores on May 28th.  The other apps Adobe has released in the last few months have superseded the features in the now outdated touch.  And along with this announcement Adobe has released a look at mobile photo editing coming later this year.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLhftwa2-y4

The Future of Photography - 4k Video?

Christina and I have discussed the future of photography multiple times on our weekly mish mash show including the recent episode 58. I propose that we will in the not so distant future shoot video (basically shooting a burst of images that happens to be so fast it is virtually video) and then you pull a still or stills from the video.   I am not the only one that thinks that way, it's pretty clear from the recent Panasonic G7 release that Panasonic has a similar idea. Their new G7 offers two 4K photo modes - ways to extract stills from video.  I already own the GH4 and recently accompanied Christina on an engagement shoot. I was recording video with the GH4 and pulled out some of the best moments as stills and sent the files off to AdoramaPix (saved 20% too). Just got the prints back and I am pleased with the results.Prints from Video - The future is fast arriving

Lily Camera Drone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vGcH0Bk3hgSimilar to the Soloshot Camera Controller we've now got a drone that can do autonomous shooting with Lily, the camera that follows you. Compared to the learning curve of a DJI phantom this small ultra-portable drone is a no setup solution that works by automatically following a small wearable tracking device. Lily is a personal selfie drone with a rugged design that gives it the ability to be your action GoPro in the sky without all the work or someone on the controls.Waterproof Lily Drone The lightweight (2.8 lb) and tiny (10.29” x 10.29” x 3.22”) drone is the perfect size to throw in a bag without needing a lot of extra equipment. Waterproof up to a meter it can handle the weather just fine including taking off on water and salt water exposure. The Lily gets 20 minutes of flight time on one charge and only requires two hours to charge. Due to waterproofing the battery is internal and unfortunately cannot be switched out for more flight time. Lily has a 100’ maximum range but can keep up with the action up to 25mph and handle 15mph winds. Due to the size constraints and waterproofing unfortunately the Lily does not support mounting for a camera gimbal.Shot From Lily DroneSporting a 12MP wide angle camera comparable to a GoPro Hero 3 you can get decent photos for a low price. In terms of focal length a 94 degree field of view is not to the fisheye levels of the GoPro with the trade off of a reduction in the lens distortion. It includes 1080p video as well at 60fps for smooth action without any motion blur. Being your selfie wingman Lily can leverage its feature detection to automatically switch between shooting videos and still shots. For sports and action it can switch to 120fps slow motion (at 720p) with built in feature detection automatically when you're hitting a snowboard jump for example. While the drone itself has a built in microphone they've thought ahead and included one also in the tracker capturing your audio which can be combined back with the video in post.Lily Tracking DeviceIn terms of use the drone is fully autonomous although you can change settings such as flight behavior, framing, and camera controls through its smartphone app (IOS and Android). Through the app you can also view a low resolution live stream from the Lily’s onboard camera. While it doesn't have the functionality of the smartphone app the tracking device also doubles as a basic remote for taking photos and video as well as a emergency stop.

There is no collision detection so you do have to be a bit mindful of obstacles in the flight path. Unlike the Soloshot the tracking device does not require a line of sight so it can be fine in a pocket. If the tracking device does lose connection Lily will stay in place until it reacquires the signal or using feature detection to locate its operator visually. While not possible yet future plans for the software include multiple drones working in concert and tracking multiple subjects.Lily is currently available for preorder at www.lily.camera for $499, retailing at $999. The current goal for shipping orders is February 2016.

I have a few Pentax readers and they are quite vocal :) What we are really waiting to hear more about - the full frame pentax that will be released later this year.

Google Photo Story

Post Summary: If you are looking for an easy way to share your photos and travels with friends and family consider using Google+. The Story feature makes it very easy, in fact it can even be completely automatic after your initial setup. My recent travels and geotagging episode on Lightroom has prompted me to consider ways to share my photos AND locations with the world. Truthfully this is something that is almost always on my mind, I crave a simple way to journal my travels, a mix of text, location information and of course my photos.  I have tried several sites, some that are no longer around and all have failed - either the friction on my end to setup a trip was high or the presentation on the viewers end was lacking, or I just didn't feel like setting up a new account and cajoling friends and family to come visit.  Google feels the same and has created a system that builds a "story" from your photos and travels into a simple but slick presentation that partially reminds me of the cut scenes in Indian Jones movies with the flying plane and dot dot dot from point to point.Google Story TransitionThe photos come from your smart phone or photos uploaded to your Google Photos account with location data embedded in the photo. Again, if you want to know how to add location data buy episode 07 or Watch my free Youtube How-to on Geotagging.  If you have auto backup turned on, on your smartphone Google will automatically upload images you take with the smartphone AND any you transfer from wifi enabled camera to your smartphone.  This is all pulled into a story shown below -

Now this story is rough around the edges, this was a weekend of helping my mom move, lots of back and forth,  and some photos it decided to include are a little silly but overall it does a fair job of sharing SOME moments from the trip.   Additional moments captured with my Sony a7 Mark II haven't been geotagged and uploaded to Google yet, when I do I have the option of adding those by selecting EDIT on the story - here I can add or remove locations and photos.Edit Google StoryRemoving photos does not delete the original, just removes it from the story. You can remove locations too. Here is an example of a story built from several cameras - still some gaps in locations, I am not sure why. The goodnews, it automatically picked most of my favorite images from the trip and built a lovely look at our recent travels out to the Olympic Peninsula.

If you are looking for an easy way to share your photos and travels with friends and family consider using Google+. I suggest you turn on Auto Backup anyway, as an additional way to backup/keep your photos safe. Google offers some additional helpful tips to make sure this all worksStories will work best if you:

  • Turn on Google Location History
  • If you store photos on Google Drive, show your Drive photos & videos in your photo library
  • Use Auto Backup on your mobile device or computer
  • Make sure Auto Awesome is on
  • Add your home & work addresses in Google Maps
  • Take a lot of pictures

Based on your location and time of image taken you don't actually need to geotag all the photos but it will help build a more accurate story.Google has more info at Relive and share your adventures using StoriesCreate a story? Share a link to it in the comments

Senal SMH-1000 Headphone Review

Senal SMH-1000Those have you been watching my videos know that at times I haven’t always gotten the audio perfect - one of my issues was not having decent headphones to monitor the audio coming in and not using high quality headphones while editing.  These Senal SMH-1000 closed back studio headphones have made a huge difference in my ability to monitor the audio and check the quality while editing.  These are professional grade studio monitor headphones and the feel professional in the hand and I can attest to their comfort wearing for long periods of time. Amazon Offering Unlimited Storage Amazon has made news with their Unlimited Photos option for Prime subscribers and they have now upped their offering and $59.99 a year (after free three month trial) gets you unlimited storage of ALL FILES.  This is extremely competitive offering that moves Amazon ahead of Mozy, Backblaze, CrashPlan and other popular backup/online storage services. The downside - Amazon's desktop app used for file transfer is extremely limited- with drag and drop of folder(s) and a single option- Cancel- once upload has begun.  Mozy, Backblaze, CrashPlan provide controls for limiting the amount of bandwidth used,  pause/resume capabilities and automatic syncing of designated folders or drives.Amazon Cloud Drive AppProfessional Photographers, proceed with caution,  Amazon's TOS states the following: You may use the Service only to store, retrieve, manage, and access Your Files for personal, non-commercial purposes using the features and functionality we make available. You may not use the Service to store, transfer or distribute content of or on behalf of third parties, to operate your own file storage application or service, to operate a photography business or other commercial service I'd still like to use this as a backup solution for my personal files but with the current simplistic upload system it isn't feasible. Will it work for you? Who/where do you backup your files?  Let me know in the comments.

Reader Report: The Photography Show

One of my readers/viewers(Scott Fautley) had a chance to attend the recent "The Photography Show" in Birmingham England and shared some thoughts and photos. Yes - it is just called "The Photography Show"I had the pleasure of visiting the Birmingham NEC for the UK Photography show – courtesy of my Girlfriend’s stepdad who is a professional Food, Drink and Product Photographer (His work is at http://www.stevepaynephotography.co.uk/)Scott Writes -I had never attended this kind of show before, but knew I’d be able to land my hands on some new gear and test out some bits.We got there about 11am, the NEC is enormous and several other conventions etc were going on at the time, since this was the opening day and usually a day for the consumers, I was expecting it to be busy and of course it was – but not too bad.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16896714055/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709077818/in/album-72157651093350278/The first thing we came into was the Canon stand – I say stand, the area was enormous and absolutely packed – we decided to come back later.ZeissThe next stand was the Zeiss. I have seen a 55mm 1.4 Zeiss Otus before, however that was Matt Granger’s and his is Nikon mount – the guys as Zeiss were really friendly and let me take a look at both the 55 and new 85 Otus. The great thing about these shows is they let you try out all of their gear!I snapped off a few shots on the Zeiss 85mm at F2.8 and F1.4 – it is so sharp, but incredibly difficult to get perfect focus at 1.4 because of the tiny depth of field and manual focus only. I took a series of shots and checked the focus peaking on magic lantern to ensure I’d got one, but it took me about 5 shots! They were doing a show special price, £3,000 down from £3,300 – probably not for me hey…https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16870781786/in/set-72157651093350278TamronI moved onto the Tamron stand, which surprisingly wasn’t too large.Their distribution manager said their demand has really stepped up since the new 24-70 and 70-200 VC lenses were released. They had the new 15-30mm F2.8 VC. I’m not sure if this was a finished version or the pre-production model. It’s nice and sharp however when you have a lens this wide, you need to consider your metering setting as evaluative threw my exposure way off, nearly 2 stops in fact. It’s very similar in size and weight to the 24-70 VC and is very nice indeed but has a very large bulbous front element so won’t accept a lot of filters – 15mm is incredibly wide on a full frame camera.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16276712453/in/set-72157651093350278(sample from the TAMRON SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC)SamyangNot quite as wide as my next stand – Samyang. In the UK the same firm distribute Samyang and Tamron, Samyang said that film-makers are really using their lenses a lot since they are optically superb, and the newly designed Cine range has focus rings purposely made for pulling focus. I tried out the 12mm 2.8 Fisheye which has 180 degree field of view, I could see my own finger when focusing! Focus on these requires some getting used to but when you’ve got it, again they are really sharp glass. The 14mm 2.8 has a similarly wide field of view but far less distortion. You have to click your aperture on these lenses old school so you don’t actually know what your F-stop was after the event, but they meter just fine.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16710566429/in/set-72157651093350278(Sample from the Samyang 12mm 2.8 Fisheye)LytroAfter a bit more of a wander I stumbled across Lytro.Lytro were probably the best chat I had at the entire event. If you don’t know much about them – in short, they have a camera that you change the depth of field in post, it’s an odd concept but one that could prove hugely useful. Currently it’s held back by relatively low resolution and a small sensor. The ergonomics are great, although I did suggest they added an EVF or at least have the option of one to appeal to a larger market. They said they have the technology to manipulate depth of field in video - that would be quite something. Note from Toby: I have heard Lyrto is mostly abandoning the photo market and concentrating efforts on video with emphasis on virtual reality - It all still feels like a gimmick but I am sure this technology will be incorporated into cameras - just not sure how far in the future.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16870822986/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709096178/in/set-72157651093350278SonySony had a large stand, I had a chance to try out the A7R and the A7 II – both are nice in the hand and well built. The light in the hall wasn’t great and you do notice a slight lag in the EVF – it certainly wasn’t bad but something that would take getting used to if you were a DSLR shooter. The resolution is also nothing like looking through an Optical viewfinder i.e. Life…https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16689401747/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16896747265/in/set-72157651093350278At these events it’s nice to see lots of different companies offering different print options – ones on plexiglass really looked amazing and contemporary.HasselbladHasselblad was great fun for those who are interested in medium format and studio shooting. They had a Marilyn Monroe style model which they were allowing visitors to shoot with an H5D (unsure which back).https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16276770633/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16274385264/in/set-72157651093350278KOWANearby were KOWA lenses who make a selection of high quality Micro 4/3rds lenses and Telephoto Zooms, all of which are manual focus. I must say the build quality of these were superb. Note from Toby: I only recently learned that Kowa made lenses, I have a spotting scope from Kowa and it is fantastic.DronesAs you would expect there were plenty of drones. I saw plenty from DJI and other manufacturers.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16689436017/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709141078/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16896913895/in/album-72157651093350278/(GH4 on a SERIOUS drone)CanonThe main event for me finally came – the Canon stand had died down. As there were a lot of consumers there, the areas surrounding the T6i/T6s (750D/760D) were busy, but access to the 5DS and 5DSR was relatively clear. I got my hands on the 5DSR. The sides were sealed up to ensure nobody snuck a card in.One Canon rep made of point of telling me it’s a totally new body, since I actually own a 5D Mk3 (and had one in my hand) you’d think he’d know a bit better. It’s IDENTICAL. The menus, the grip, the dials – all the same. Any re-design is internal. This isn’t a bad thing, but don’t expect this to feel like a new camera. It is a 5D Mark 3 with a higher resolution sensor. In terms of operating speed, it felt about the same, I suppose that means it’s a bit quicker as it’s handling those huge 50mp files.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709405970/in/set-72157651093350278https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16689486687/in/set-72157651093350278Canon said to me that every Canon L lens is designed with the next 5 years of camera’s in mind, so lenses in 2010 should still get great detail out of the 5DS range. They said they had no idea when the 5D Mark 4 was coming, they said they are not expecting it this year though and it is highly unlikely to feature 4k video because of cooling issues.Note from Toby: Sometimes it seems Reps have no clue and sometimes they are right on - either way I still think 4K is a big question for the Mark IV, not because they can't do it - because they won't do it. Also - cooling issues? The LX100 can shoot 4K, the GH4 can shoot 4K - these smaller cameras are not bursting into flames . . .I also had the chance to try the new 11-24 F4 L. It felt very nice, 11mm is crazy wide on a FF but remember as this isn’t a fisheye – it’s field of view is not as wide as the 12mm Samyang. As you’d expect – at 11mm the distortion away from the centre is still quite evident, not as bad as a fisheye though. It’s lovely and sharp, you’d hope so for £2,800!https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16870925006/in/set-72157651093350278(taken with the 11-24 f4 L)https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16710690409/in/album-72157651093350278/(taken with the 11-24 f4 L)NikonNikon had a nice big stand, it was laid out better than Canon’s which allowed the crowds to flow. The new 300m F4 was available to use, the compact size of that prime is brilliant and could comfortably be hand held. I got a nice look up close on the D810 and D4s. As you’d expect, 2 phenomenal cameras.https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16895632432/in/album-72157651093350278/https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16895637212/in/album-72157651093350278/https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16710709759/in/album-72157651093350278/SigmaThe final stand I spent any time of note was the Sigma. The constant flow was for the 150-600mm, I saw a lot of people try out that lens, it looked fantastically well built. I was more interested in the 50mm Art series.Having had the chance to use it – WOW. Beautifully built, focus was snappy and the image quality absolutely stunning on my 5D Mark 3. I’d love them to make an 85mm and the sales rep said there will be one at some stage.Note from Toby: Scott leaves us with a little love of Pentaxhttps://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16709252358/in/album-72157651093350278/https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16710739849/in/album-72157651093350278/(The camera Christina is drooling over)https://www.flickr.com/photos/sfauts/16689559637/in/album-72157651093350278/(The camera Christina is drooling over)See Scott's full gallery on Flickr and give him some thanks for taking the time to share his thoughts and photos. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." -Chuck CloseMore info: http://photorec.tvWant answers to your questions?
