Lightroom Classic CC v7.3 | April 2018 UPDATES

Adobe has released an update for Lightroom Classic now at v7.3 that adds a few features, moves a few features and adds support for more cameras/lenses including the new Sony a7iii.

Adobe Lightroom Profiles

In Lightroom Classic CC and Adobe Camera Raw, profiles have been moved from the Camera Calibration panel(very bottom) to the Basic panel(very top).Expanded profile capabilities with six brand new Adobe Raw profiles, over 40 new Creative profiles, and an all-new Profile Browser that lets you quickly compare and select the best profile for your photo. When you hover over the profile your selected image previews the changes in real-time.

About these color profiles

Adobe Color was designed to greatly improve the look and rendering of warm tones, improving the transitions between certain color ranges, and slightly increasing the starting contrast of your photos. Since Adobe Color is the new default (but only for newly imported photos), it was designed to work on the widest range of photos and ensures that regardless of the subject, your photo will look great.Adobe Monochrome has been carefully tuned to be a great starting point for any black and white photograph, resulting in better tonal separation and contrast than photos that started off in Adobe Standard and were converted into black and white.Adobe Portrait is optimized for all skin tones, providing more control and better reproduction of skin tones. With less contrast and saturation applied to skin tones throughout the photo, you get more control and precision for critical portraiture.Adobe Landscape, as the name implies, was designed for landscape photos, with more vibrant skies and foliage tones.Adobe Neutral provides a starting point with a very low amount of contrast, useful for photos where you want the most control or that have very difficult tonal ranges.Adobe Vivid provides a punchy, saturated starting point.Often I find these profiles to offer a good starting point for your edits. More accessible Camera Matching Profiles

Camera Matching Profiles were one of the most powerful raw tools found in Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom Classic CC, but also one of the most difficult to find. Now, they’re easier to find and available for the first time in Lightroom CC. We created the Camera Matching profiles to match the different options often found in your camera, making it possible for you to match the color and tonality of your raw file with what you saw on the your camera’s LCD or the JPEG rendered by your camera, as closely as possible. The options available for any particular photograph will vary, depending on which camera the photo was captured with.

Creative Profiles include LUTs

The profiles found in the four Creative profiles groups: Artistic, Black & White, Modern, and Vintage can be applied to any photo, both raw and non-raw. The Creative profiles were designed to create a look and feel in your photos and provide even more control thanks to the inclusion of a 3D Lookup Table (LUT) that can be included within a profile. LUTs have often been used by Photoshop and video professionals to add a color grading effect to the photo, with more options and precision than were previously possible in Lightroom. Creative Profiles also provide a new Amount slider, enabling you to increase or decrease the effect, tuning it to your taste.

Additional Lightroom April 2018 Changes

Dehaze has been moved into the basic panel - something I predicted two years ago. Wait long enough and you will eventually be, right?Always be gentle with the sliders in the Presence section of the basic panel and this includes Dehaze. It is powerful but can quickly add too much contrast to your image. A New Lightroom and a Faster One

A Tale of Two Lightrooms. So what did we get?

The program we know as Lightroom has been rebranded/split by Adobe into two products. A fully cloud-based service and the standard desktop version (the one you're used to), now called Lightroom Classic. While Lightroom is now in the cloud, changes to either can be synced between programs. A New Lightroom

A big update to the existing Lightroom web platform, we've got a cloud version of Lightroom for desktops, tablets, and phones. Image editing you want but in a simplified package that Adobe made for you to use on all your devices. This new Lightroom is a streamlined version that's simpler to use and ready for on the go work.

• Cloud Storage with Lightroom CC storing all your full-resolution photos, including RAW files, safely in the cloud (1TB of space comes with the plan, more is available).

Photoshop

• A new Learn panel, the first big step for those new or just starting with Photoshop with step by step tutorials for tools and basic editing. They've also included new tooltips with little images and animations to help you along.
• Lightroom photos will pull your photos from the cloud directly into Photoshop.
• Copy and paste multiple layers in one go, keeping their order and location.
• Support for 360 Degree image editing and Apple HEIF
• Curvature Pen Tool - For those that hated the pen tool, Adobe has a friendlier pen tool to get the curves you need.
• Brush updates with new management, stroke smoothing to prevent jitters, and more brushes.
• Photoshop also gained a slight performance boost. As well as Adobe improving all their algorithms for cleaner lines, better filters, upscaling, and more.

Adobe Plans

Lightroom comes in three flavors now. The regular Creative Cloud Photography Plan stays the same price but now gains 20GB of cloud storage. Existing Creative Cloud Photography Plans can switch to the new 1TB plan for more cloud storage and get $5 off for the first year.Despite the fact they promised they wouldn't,  Adobe Standalone products are gone with Lightroom 6 as the last version. This was the Lightroom software packaged separate, not requiring the monthly charge and did not include Photoshop. The current standalone software will get an update for the Nikon D850 at the end of the month with camera support updates for this year only.All-in-all it's an extensive update to existing programs, and new ones as well. The biggest improvement, being the speed boosts with Lightroom Classic people have been asking for since last year. The new Lightroom cloud system is an interesting update and we'll have to see what happens as Adobe continues to work on the platform.

Delete Your Photos!

Don't Forget to Add or Update Your Metadata Copyright

Happy New Year! It's time to update your metadata copyright for the new year, and if you haven't been doing this it's time to start. Unlike watermarks on top of your photo you have the chance to add your information in the file's embedded metadata. This consists of EXIF data (aperture, ISO, camera model, GPS, etc) and IPTC data (caption, title, subject, and importantly copyright). This convenient space for copyright affords a bit of protection under the DCMA, a way to show the photo is yours, and making it slightly easier to find online if someone takes the photo.From a legal standpoint it's against the DCMA to remove the metadata. Sites like Facebook tend to strip the data as it saves on storage with millions of files but there has been a bit of pushback on this as of late. As for individual cases it can be up to a $2,500 fine, more if the photo was used commercially. Statistically in most cases if your photo is taken they tend not to strip your metadata making it easy to find. If your wondering which sites do keep this information you can find out here.  It's not a lock tight system, and quite easy to get around, but it's one easy step that helps down the road. This just provides a limited step, for full copyright protection you still have to register your photos with the copyright office and submit the files online.

In Lightroom

As the most convenient option, Lightroom will handle adding your information to photos while importing. If you don't have Lightroom programs such as Photoshop, Essentials, and many other free applications can add this as well.To Create a New Preset:

1. Start the Import Module
2. Go to Apply During Import on the right sidebar.
3. Click the box next to Metadata and click New
4. Scroll down to IPTC Copyright and fill out the area with your information
5. Then fill out IPTC Creator with your information
6. Click create and import
   1. If you happen to cancel out of import you'll just have to select your preset the next import. After that the choice will be set for every following import.

 FYI, to get that copyright symbol "©" in the box you can enter the keyboard alt code. It's the trick to entering characters not readily available as a key on your keyboard.

• For Windows: Press and hold the alt key then type 0169 on your keyboard
• For Mac: Press and hold the option key then press G

To Update a Preset:

1. Start the Import Module
2. Go to Apply During Import on the right sidebar
3. Click Edit Presets
4. Click the bar at the top next to Preset currently listed as Custom
5. Select your preset
6. Change the year of your copyright claim
7. Click done then press save

If you've been neglecting or haven't applied it to your older photos you can fix that quite easily. Select your older photos while in the Library Module. Right click on a photo, go to Metadata Presets, and select the one you've just created which will write that data to all of your photos. If you'd like the years to match you can select the photos by year when it's finished and edit them as a group under metadata in the right sidebar.

In Camera

Since we now have cameras with file transfer over WiFi or that you just might want to grab a file from the card to share it helps to add your information to your camera as well. You might be overwriting it once it gets to Lightroom anyway but it's a simple backup in the case that you want to share a photo quickly. Canon, Nikon, and Sony have this option available which you can find in your manual.

Lightroom Mobile Android RAW Editing

See the complete list of supported cameras  iOS users got this update in July.You will need a USB On-The-Go adapter also called an OTG cable that will allow you to directly connect your camera to your android mobile device. Shop OTG cables at B&H or on Amazon OTG cable. -Those are standard micro USB cables. If you have a USB-C device you will need to purchase a USB-C OTG.   iOS users need the SD card adapter. Why do you need a cable/adapter, don't modern cameras offer WiFi transfer?  Yes! Made for Creators, Microsoft's New Line of Surface Products

Oddly we've noticed the demo shows Lightroom mobile but we're bound to find out more as they are shipping relatively soon in November. If you've been looking for an upgrade to your aging system on paper both are expected to be great choices.

  

The big show stopper for this announcement is the Microsoft Surface Studio all-in-one desktop. First off, yes they basically copied an iMac, the design works why re-invent the wheel. What's different is this desktop shifts down to a 20 degree angle for better access to use it's touch screen, draw, or edit photos. A 28" 4.5K touchscreen makes for a heck of an editor but looking under the hood you can't dismiss the i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M graphics card, and 1TB SSHD. Then with more expensive models hosting an i7 with twice as much ram, 2TB SSHD, and even better graphics.As a companion peripheral to the Surface Studio we get the Surface Dial. Working with Windows 10 as a new way to scroll, zoom, and navigate. Setting it on the screen opens up an immersive environment with tools and options for the dial specific to the app your using. Using Photoshop? Set the dial on screen for tool and color options without having to get your mouse.Big brother is back with an update to the Surface Book. A powerful option last year, due to it's small size and strong processing power ratio it became the go to laptop for a ton of photographers. While the outside hasn't changed much since last year the biggest improvement is a 30% boost in battery life for up to 16 hours of use on one charge. With a new i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M you get even more speed in a small package outpacing the popular 13" MacBook Pro.Playing devils advocate overall the one thing that kills these is the price. Lightroom 2015.7 Update- Canon 5D Mark IV RAW Files

Lightroom was JUST updated. If you are a creative cloud user go to the little Creative Cloud App > Gear Icon > Check for Updates.    Within each program you should also be able to click Help > Check for Updates (though that didn't work for me)  The Change I care most about - Lightroom can now read 5D Mark IV RAW files - but cannot do anything with DualPixel raw - that is canon only DPP feature at this point (and probably won't change anytime soon)Additional changes worth mentioning -Updates to “All Synced Photos”We’ve made it easier to access your Lightroom CC images on the go with Lightroom for mobile and Lightroom for web.You can now drag images directly to the “All Synced Photographs” collection in the Catalog panel.  By doing so, the image syncs with the Creative Cloud, and ensures that you’ll be able to edit, organize, or share the photo on the go with Lightroom across your devices.Smart Previews for Faster PerformanceYou’ve always been able to use Smart Previews in the Develop Module as a way to edit photos without having access to the original images on disk.  Astute customers reported faster performance in the Develop Module when using Smart Previews and keeping their original images disconnected from their computer.  Now, you can set a Preference in the Performance tab so that Lightroom will always use Smart Previews in the Develop Module, if they are available, even when the original files are also available.To do so,

Random Presets with the Lightroom Preset Creator

Something a bit different for today is a site by Allen Serhat for random Lightroom presets.

This isn't going to be anything your going to use on a day to day basis for editing. For those starting out though it'll be a nice way to learn and experiment with features that are usually skipped over by those starting out. Something simple as adjusting the tone curve can add drastically different looks to your photo without much work. Using this creator you can make a series of presets to experiment with just that. Unless you magically strike gold your going to end up with a lot of Instagram like filters but this is mainly for learning not editing. You always have the option though of fine tuning your preset and re-saving it if you hit something you like.

Once you've selected your choices and hit create go download your new preset. Then in Lightroom's develop module under presets you can right click and import your preset file. Then it's ready to use. Also you can right click to delete the preset when your finished with it.

For example with HSL you can effect colors globally. In this preset all of the red, yellows, and oranges have been turned a shade of bright red while all the other colors have been heavily muted. This is caused from red's hue being pushed to orange, orange to red, and yellow to orange. Forcing everything to turn red. While in saturation every option bar red, orange, and blue has taken a massive drop leaving the muted color scheme.

Lightroom 2.0 for Android has been released - Offering some nice improvements.

• Enhanced sharing with one-tap access to Adobe Premiere Clip for crafting video stories.

Open on the Play Store to Update Adobe Premiere Clip has also been updated. (my favorite Android video editor)

• Improved output quality -export at 1080p
• Support for files larger than 1GB
• Improved performance and stability - I have already found it to be very stable - more than any other android video editor I have tried.
