Don't use a Tripod or Tripod Tips and Tricks

https://youtu.be/0wIlHixjTr8 Tripod Recommendations:Budget Tripod: Dolica ProlineMy Recommendation: MeFoto Road Trip CFTop of the line: Feisol Legs with Acratech GP Ballhead Mini Tripod: Pedco UltralightFlexible Mini Tripod: Joby GorillapodI want to take just a few minutes and talk about when you should and should NOT use a tripod - far too often I see beginners carrying around and using a tripod when they don’t need too. In my opinion the only time you must use a tripod is when you are shooting at shutter speeds slow enough that you might get blur from handshake and that typically happens when your shutter speed is less than your focal length. If shooting at 50mm your shutter speed should be at least 1/50 of a second. There are more variables in figuring out the best shutter speed to avoid shake and I talk about those in my shutter speed video.Shooting at those slower shutter speeds is when you DO want the camera on a sturdy tripod DOES it really hurt to use it at those other times? It can because I see beginners doing two things when they use a tripod - setting up at eye level and rooting. We are humans we like to be comfortable and so we often setup cameras at a comfortable eye level, for some compositions this is OK but being free of a tripod means you are free to quickly try a variety of heights - what does your composition look like from ground level, just above? How about as high as you can reach? Using a tripod encourages us to set up at ONE height and stick there - this brings up ROOTING. We plunk the tripod down, put the camera on it and don’t move, continually shooting from the same location - maybe you try a different depth of field, maybe you try moving the focus point but generally you are going to end up taking way too many photos from that point of view and being free from a tripod encourages movement. Small shifts left or right, up or down can make a large difference in your composition not to mention frees you to look in all directions. When we work with new photographers on our trips we like to remind them about the 360 rule - always take a moment to do a slow spin looking for other possible subjects or compositions that are sometimes behind you. Shooting with a tripod is friction against moving and that’s potentially holding you back from a better shot. When are tripods useful?

  1. Using a tripod to shoot a bracketed exposure can help reduce ghosting and increase image quality but if you have a camera with a decent burst rate, with some practice you can certainly shoot a fast burst of bracketed shots without serious alignment issues.
  2. When you are setting up a careful composition, I find a tripod makes it easier to really study your composition, leveling your horizon, scanning the frame for distractions. It's harder as a beginner to study a shot and bring it up to your eye making the adjustments you want though it is possible, just don’t get rooted in the same spot
  3. Working with really heavy lenses, it is nice to have some support there even if you remain above the shutter speed rule.

So there are certainly valid reasons for using a tripod but as beginners I want you to aware of the drawbacks and hope you will keep those in mind as you photograph.

Quick Tripod Tips -

  • Always turn of image stabilization when your camera is on a tripod - some stabilizations systems at some shutter speeds will actually cause blur and give you soft images as a result.
  • I like to position one of the tripod legs under my lens for increased stability.
  • Never ever walk away from my camera on a tripod unless you are 110% sure it is stable.
  • Position the tripod plate release under the lens, making it harder to accidentally grab. There are times in the dark I thought I was adjusting the ball head when really I was loosening the plate. Not fun!!

Do you have additional scenarios where tripods are useful - leave them in the comments below. These days because of all the travel I am doing I am happy carrying the MeFoto Carbon Fiber Road Trip - it offers a nice blend of portability and stability- You can see several other recommendations at different price points below. Canon 5D Mark IV Articulating LCD Hack

In my 5D Mark IV Review I complained about the lack of articulating LCD screen - several of you commented with the suggestion that you can use your phone with the Canon Camera Connect app as an articulating screen.  Here I demonstrate what that might look like and ask if you think it is viable alternative to actually having an articulating screen on the Canon 5D Mark IV.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPEl_RUQaMUscreenshot-2016-10-28-10-14-31Gear NeededPhone Holder Mefoto: http://amzn.to/2dTCn7kHotshoe Mount: http://amzn.to/2fno2W0 Want to travel with me and McKay Photography Academy? Learn more: http://bit.ly/MPA_toby

Redesigned BlackRapid Breathe Series

BlackRapid ShooterBeing one of the industry leaders in Camera Straps BlackRapid has had a bit of experience in what's worked and what hasn't in the market.  Seven years of development, innovation, and customer interaction have resulted in the new BlackRapid Breathe line of camera straps. Getting away from the neckstrap you get with your camera allows for more flexibility, comfort, and airflow. Especially during long periods of shooting. BlackRapid Breathe is designed to be lighter, more comfortable, easier to use, and most importantly more secure. So what do you get in this next generation?black-rapid-mount

  • A new shoulder pad design for better weight and position
  • Airmesh grip layer to fix the strap to your shoulder and provide ventilation
  • Straps now come with the Brad underarm stabilizing strap(instead of paying another $15)
  • Better Duraflex buckles, one of the higher end suppliers
  • Springloaded bumper locks secure the camera's range on the strap
  • Hypalon hook up points, the rubber they use to make durable inflatable boats for increased strength
  • New connectors with the CR3 (Connect R) and FR5 (Fasten R) as seen right which lock into BlackRapid's lockstar for a more secure hold on the camera

blackrapid_362008_tether_kit_1474170877000_1278410As for the one complaint most have is the fact that there is only one point of failure in the strap. Meaning if that lock comes loose, that is now secured even more with a bracket finally, your camera will fall. For years I've suggested OP/TECH uni-loop and system connectors as a way to connect to the top of the camera from the strap but now BlackRapid offers a tether accessory kit. As my solution is four times cheaper than the $35 tether kit and has buckles if your interested in a backup our recommendation stays the same.

MeFOTO Air Collection

MeFOTO AirIf you remember Toby’s review of the MeFOTO Backpacker he was quite the fan of the lightweight travel tripod. This week MeFOTO has announced a new version of their popular line of travel tripods that are lighter, faster, and easier-to-use. The biggest new change, MeFOTO switched from the previous monopod alternative setup to a new capability of turning into a selfie stick.MeFOTO HyperLock Setup and breakdown times have been significantly reduced with a new HyperLock Design. HyperLock reduces weight, size, ease of use, and setup time with a new twist to lock foot setup to extend the legs. In total almost a 30% reduction in weight compared to the previous models MeFOTO Air is a great choice for a travel or hiking photographer. With the switch to HyperLock specs have changed a bit since last year. Out of the line on average their load capacity is 25% less but still plenty to hold anything you would need. A bit less rugged as well as they’ve also removed the spiked feet; in the case of the WalkAbout it has lost its weather and dust resistance. In terms of packed size the WalkAbout is 5 inches smaller while for the most part tripods receive a small size reduction, the best being the BackPacker at 2.2 inches. With the redesign the minimum and maximum heights have been nicely improved giving the tripods a bit more range for height or getting low to the ground. A better Intuitive design, with the change Mefoto has added icons on the legs for ease of use to those not familiar with the HyperLock design. Keeping the setup from the previous generation ball heads are arca-type compatible for the industry standard quick release plate.MeFOTO BluetoothOne feature missing from the tripods for this generation is the ability to be used as a monopod. In it’s place you now have the option to pull the central column out for use as a extending selfie stick. With the central column out you can connect a cell phone adapter plate to attach your phone (see video). MeFoto has even added a Bluetooth remote that stays with the tripod to fire the phone. As with Toby traveling with McKay Photography, having a selfie stick on hand during a trip to use is a nice touch without having to carry any extra gear. You can pre-order through the links below, the MeFOTO air line will start to ship November, 1st of this year. https://vimeo.com/182870823

Godox V860II-S Review and Specifications

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4we8QQVNec71ylsgu1t2l-_sl1000_Is this a good, and much more affordable option, than the Sony flashes for your Sony camera? Check out Scott's review in the video above and the technical specs below!Godox have released an impressive speedlight for Sony Cameras with the V860II-S. Featuring TTL and Godox 2.4GHz X radio it's a great option that can communicate with a variety of products as master or slave. Using the additional X-T1 flash trigger (linked below) you have access to 2.4GHz wireless to fire the V860II-S wherever needed, even through walls.Versus traditional AA batteries you find in most speedlights the V860II-S uses Lithium-ion batteries for a 1.5 second recycle time for use up to 650 flashes. Despite it's lower price versus Sony it's a fully featured speedlight with functions including manual flash, 1/8000 high speed sync, flash exposure compensation, flash exposure lock, second curtain sync, modeling flash, and more. The Godox has great build quality, good features, works smoothly, and can save a few quid versus the more expensive Sony branded flash making it an easy buy. godox_v860ii_1b56061wyxs8-h3l-_sl1000_products_camera_flash_v860ii_08

SanDisk 1TB SDXC Card Announcement From Photokina

sandiskAnnounced at Photokina, Western Digital developed a SanDisk 1TB SDXC card prototype, because the 512GB model unveiled at Photokina 2014 clearly wasn’t big enough. Western Digital being the current owners of Sandisk after the buyout in May of this year. If the 512GB card is any indication it cost $800 at the time of it’s release and the 1TB card should be even more expensive.  So what is the one card to rule them all good for? Beyond just storing photos we’re in a world now with 4K video, video surveillance, and 360 video. Not to mention large Megapixel cameras like the 50MP's coming out lately or the 250MP CMOS sensor Canon has in development. This expands options for videographers and photographers while not needing to change out cards as often.gh52phpmf7cxn

As for us mere mortals shooting with more affordable cameras on paper a 1TB card is a great option if you could afford the price tag. As an example the Canon 80D has RAW files about 34mb on average which would be just under 30,000 photos. As for 4k video it would be just shy of 15 hours of footage before the card filled up finally. Great for someone in Toby’s case going to Tanzania as while shooting photo and video he came back with 1.7TB of files, almost filling two of these cards.

So that said, in practice vs paper, you ARE putting all your eggs in one basket. Having worked in the automotive industry using thousands of these there is a failure rate and you will see it working with that many cards. Not to mention between dust and wear the card goes through in it’s life cycle they do get worn out. It’s recommended when shooting to exchange 32GB or 64GB cards so not all your photos are in one place. Even personally I’ve had a card die while shooting and managed to save half an event as it was on another card. Compared to previous years they are quite cheap, you can pick up 32GB cards in the $20 range, cheaper during sales.  Playing devil’s advocate the failure rate of SD cards is mostly in the first month or two of ownership with a 25% drop off after this period. Also overall your higher end cameras have dual card slots protecting you from data loss if you were doing 4K video professionally. Even with Sony cameras you can pull the card while it is writing. Because it creates a database every time you stick the card in Toby’s never lost a single image, even ones writing to the card when removed. Having a large card does have it’s benefits but you have to weigh that with the risk and importance of what your shooting.                    In the meantime no price or release date as of yet for the 1TB card but based on the 512GB it’ll be pricey for sure. You can use the links below to pick up a slightly less expensive 32GB or 64GB SD card from Amazon or B&H.

Fun fact: Sixteen years ago Sandisk created a 64MB SD card. Today’s 1TB card could store over 15,000 of them.

Case Remote - Wifi Remote Control for your DSLR

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXQXXK3ViDc Back the CASE Remote AIR on indieGOGOThis is the Case Remote AIR - this tiny device allows you to remotely control your camera, download photos, including RAW files and adds several really sweet features to your otherwise dumb camera - now some of you might wonder why we need this when most current Nikon and Canon cameras  provide some sort of wifi control via an app - and my answer - have you actually used those apps? They are so barebones it is frustrating AND the case remote works with older Canon and NIkon cameras that don’t offer wifi control and even allow you to start and stop video remotely. 8338The Case Remote creates its own WIFI hotspot so you can use this anywhere, you don’t a data connection, you connect directly to the device.   The connection info is printed on the device and apps are provided for Android and iOS with desktop Mac and Windows software in development You connect the device to the camera, you can position it in the hotshoe or attach it with the strap connection if you need to put a flash in the hot shoe, it really is very light.IMG_8370 Turn it on, Turn the camera on and then connect to the wifi, launch the app.  And you should see the camera listed.  Click to launch the controls where you can then turn live view on or OFF, touch to focus and bring up the camera settings - adjusting them on the fly.IMG_9857if you have wanted GOOD wifi control of your camera with smart features - there is nothing else that provides this level of value. I’d love to see a few features added, like bramping but overall I appreciate the wifi control of older cameras and the ability to transfer RAW files from newer cameras. Back the CASE Remote AIR on indieGOGO

Sigma to Sony Converter MC-11

Along with the new 50-100 f/1.8 and the 30mm f/1.4 DN announced last night - Sigma has also announced at Mount Converter - Similar to the Metabones and Commlite adapters - this adapter/converter whatever you want to call it allows you to use Sigma's lenses designed for Canon EF on Sony E- Mount with full electronic control.  Price is just $249. This is exciting! As A sony owner I also happen to have a few Sigma lenses and can tell you that both the commlite and metabones adapters provide a poor experience with the Sigma lenses - especially the commlite, I wouldn't even call it functioning - loses connection constantly.   Hopefully having an adapter direct from Sigma will provide much better results with Sigma lenses.Preorder from B&H Photo  for $249.00Full press release from Sigma below.
New Sigma Global Vision Lens Mount Converter Expands High-Performance Lens Options for Sony CamerasBrings Sigma’s Global Vision Lenses to the Sony E-Mount Camera FamilyKANAGAWA, JAPAN – February 23, 2016Sigma Corporation of America, a leading DSLR lens, camera, flash and accessories manufacturer, today announced the release of its new high-performance Sigma Global Vision lens converter – the Mount Converter MC 11 – for Sony E-mount, full frame and APS-C sensor cameras. With the new MC-11, Sony camera users will be able to utilize 19 Global Vision lenses in Sigma Canon Mount (EOS) and Sigma Mount (SA).“There are many challenges to designing high-quality mount converter and topping the list is aptly handling phase detection AF in newer cameras and this is where the Sigma MC-11 is groundbreaking in its support for the Sony E-mount systems,” states Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The new Sigma MC-11 mitigates complications with a purpose-built lens control data system engineered for maintaining superior AF functionality. So the growing number of Sony E-mount camera users who have been asking for more lens options, now have access to a large pool of lenses that fully embody Sigma’s signature quality and performance.”The Sigma MC-11’s sleek LED display lets Sony users know if the attached Sigma lens is compatible and whether or not the MC-11 needs to be updated for that specific lens. Its internal control data system keeps detailed information on each compatible Sigma lens, automatically optimizing performance of AF drive, aperture control and other critical lens functions. The MC-11’s internal control data system also maintains continuity with key camera functions that control brightness and correct transverse chromatic aberration, distortion, and more. The complete compatibility with both Sigma lens OS and Sony in-camera OS ensures correction of camera shake and other stability issues and when used with in-camera stabilization, MC-11 allows angle shake correction in the lens. The integrated flocking helps prevent internal reflections and reduction in lens performance. In addition, the MC-11 retains important EXIF data ensuring users can analyze every detail of their lens setting. The Sigma MC-11 converter can be updated with the latest compatible lens information from a workstation or laptop using the Sigma Optimization Pro software and Sigma USB Dock (sold separately). For information on the Sigma MC-11 converter please visit www.sigmaphoto.com/mount-converter-mc-11.

Cheap Pro Level Drone - $399!!

With gimbal for smooth footageB&H has the Phantom 2 Quadcopter v2.0 with Zenmuse H4-3D Gimbal Kit for just $399 today!!  This is a pro level drone with an awesome gimbal. The gimbal is what makes or breaks your aerial footage, cheap drones don't have them and you have jerky and barely watchable video from those drones. Drones with quality gimbals produce amazingly smooth video- even if it is your first flight. I am living proof seriously when you let go of the controls the drone uses GPS and the gimbal to just hold in place. You can see some footage I shot in 2014 in Italy with similar gimbal setup- my first time flying and it is rock solid! Why is the drone so cheap? You need to supply your own GoPro Hero 4. And that is of course something you can use off the drone too for underwater, timelapse or just a tiny go anywhere camera.Buy from B&H Photo for $399Some example footage from an older drone with similar gimbal.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5nHF72PDkI

Cleaning your DSLR or Mirrorless Sensor

Disclaimer- Cleaning your sensor isn't risky but does carry risks. If you damage your sensor while cleaning it is not going to be covered by your camera manufacturer's warranty and the only official cleaning method recommended by the camera manufacturers is to send in the camera for cleaning. The information I present in this post and video is based on my own experience, by following, you accept complete liability for any damages that may result.Let’s talk about dirty sensors. It happens, it’s not a big deal.Dirty SensorsDust on the sensor typically doesn’t show up unless you are shooting at smaller apertures. Bigger bits might show up starting around f/8, but it is really above f/14 and up to f/22 where you see the dust. If you are shooting lots of landscapes, this can be an issue. If you are shooting lots of portraits, with apertures below f/5.6 you can stop reading and go back to enjoying life. It is unlikely you will see any dust impact your image.f/22 - can you spot the dust and HAIR!!! Embarrassing. The first step in cleaning is to determine how dirty your sensor is. A quick way to test is to take a picture of a clean white piece of paper at f/8, f/14 and f/22 - don’t worry about your shutter speed - the dust spots will be sharp even if you shoot at slow shutter speeds, but you do want to keep your ISO fairly low to avoid noise confusing the issue. You could also photograph the sky on a clear day.Now pop that image in Lightroom and in the develop module there is a nifty option to Visual Spots located under the Spot removal tool.  Need Lightroom?Screenshot_9_8_15__8_43_AMScreenshot 2015-09-08 08.42.33Rollover the image below to see the before and after Visual Spots with my Sony a7RII sensor at f/22[himage]Dirty SensorDirty Sensor[/himage]If your sensor looks like Sony a7RII sensor does after just a few weeks of use - you probably want to clean it.Many DSLRS and Mirrorless cameras have a sensor cleaning mode - some run every time you turn the camera on or off and some run when selected. This is the first option you should try. With many of the systems, it is recommended to either hold the camera normally or facedown with the lens off so that the dust falls out. The Sony A7RII I have violently vibrates the sensor for a second or two and did absolutely nothing to reduce the amount of dust on the sensor. Hopefully you will have better results. Test again after using the in camera method.CleanSensorGif_animThe next step is to use a rocket blower - NEVER use compressed air or air in a can dust off products. Again hold the camera in such a way that the dust will fall out and give a few puffs directed at different areas of the sensor. They do sell sensor loupes - little magnifiers with led lights that make it easier to judge your progress. I used a tiny LED bike light to help see the sensor but it is clear that a bit of magnification will help too as some of these dust specks are invisible to the naked eye.$17 Sensor Magnification and LED light Sensor Loupe LED Magnification$9.95 Rocket BlowerRocket Blowers are cheap and do a great job of cleaning your sensor.Buy Rocket Blower from Amazon | B&H Photo VideoI was impressed with the results of the rocket blower- it did a good enough job that I would be happy stopping there - but if you want to get your sensor even cleaner you are going to need to touch it with something. Please read and follow all directions carefully for the kit you purchase and consult your camera manual for additional information. You have options - there are the expensive static charged brushes like the Arctic butterfly (see it at B&H) for $130 - you drag a statically charged brush across the sensor and it picks up the dust. In theory this should work fairly well with all but the stickiest particles and you never need to replace any pads etc but your up front cost are quite high. It does have two nice, bright LEDs to see what you are doing.butterflybrushOr you can go with something like the DustAid Platinum DSLR Sensor Cleaner for $26 that provides 6 cleanings - you get these little sticky pads that you gently press on the sensor, the dust sticks to the pad and then you use included “tape” to clean the pad.Dust Aid Platinum - Sticky lollipop for your sensorOr a more traditional kit like this DustAid Dust Wand Kit for $30 - Should provide about 20-40 cleanings depending on your sensor which is what I used in the video. You simply take one of the dust cloths out, wrap it carefully around the wand and apply a few drops of their cleaning solution- The larger your sensor the more drops you apply.Dust Wand Kit ReviewIf you are working with a DSLR you do need to put it into manual cleaning mode which pops the mirror out of the way. The dust aid directions suggest starting in the lower left corner and moving across the sensor. Put a new cloth on and repeat the process from the top left to the right again. Use your light and or loupe to inspect and if necessary wipe again with a clean cloth. Note that the special liquid evaporates fast so you should wipe immediately after applying.I hope this video was helpful. ONA Bag Brixton - Style without Sacrifice

ONA Bag Brixtonhttps://youtu.be/wxt1FA501AAChristina here with a review of  the ONA Brixton shoulder bag retailing at $439. My favorite thing about this bag is just how beautiful it is and how well it fits with my personal style. The antique cognac leather finish is extremely versatile in just about any situation. It has two brass buckles that provide easy access to your gear and whenever I want to use it as a lens exchanger, I simply leave the flap open to grab a lens quickly. When I’m out exploring and when I’m on a shoot, it blends in well and makes me feel pretty inconspicuous about the fact that I’m there to shoot - this works well for the my style of photography.ONA Bag InteriorBesides being a pretty bag, it’s also extremely well-made and functional. At roughly 10 by 13 inches it allows me to fit at least one camera body with a lens, plus three additional lenses and it has two huge pockets at the front that let me toss whatever I need to put away at any given moment. I particularly appreciate this because I’m often taking off lens caps and carrying clients’ things for them and it’s super helpful to be able to not have to look through tons of different pockets to find a place for things. It’s extremely well-padded, too so my gear feels well protected. It’s really comfortable - leather goods have the added benefit of molding to your body the more you use them and this bag already feels broken in after a couple of months.ONA shoulder padThere are a couple of things I wish were different about the ONA Brixton bag - The first is that it is heavier than other fabric/nylon camera bags I’ve used in the past, especially when it’s full of stuff. My other complaint is that the strap is a little bit long for my small frame. I’m petite at five foot one and I can’t seem to get the strap to be short enough for me to comfortably grab something while the bag is hanging off my shoulder and if I did shorten the strap further, it would move the shoulder pad off center and my shoulder would hit the metal buckle. I think I could be better off with the Prince Street, a smaller version of this bag, but I love the ability to put my 13” laptop in it and the Prince Street only has room for 11" and smaller laptops. If you’re at least 5' 4" though, don’t worry, you shouldn’t run into this problem. So to wrap up this short review, It’s safe to say that it’s become my everywhere bag. I’ve taken it on day trips, long-distance trips, and wedding and portrait shoots and I love it. Style is as important to me as function and this bag certainly checks both of those boxes and if this particular bag isn’t for you, ONA has a huge selection of other great bags to meet your needs.Upsides to the ONA Brixton

  • Exceptionally well made
  • Perfect amount of pockets - not too many you end up searching for stuff but still enough to keep organized
  • Gear is well padded and protected
  • Looks better every day

Downsides to the ONA Brixton

  • Shorter than 5' 4" and you may find the bag hangs a little too low.
  • Heavy

Variable ND Filter vs Non-Variable ND

https://youtu.be/lJGmo4cS0s4The Genustech variable neutral density filter or fader lets you easily control the amount of light entering your camera. With a twist of the ring, you can reduce the light from 2 to 8 stops. This can be useful if you want to shoot at slower shutter speeds during the day- like a waterfall, ocean or crowded street or if you are shooting video and want to keep your shutter speed around 1/50 of a second and control your depth of field both lending to a more cinematic look.[himage]02_1-15 sec at f - 2201_25.0 sec at f - 22[/himage]Rollover to see the longer shutter speeds possible with an ND filterThe filter is a glass and aluminum construction, very well made with smooth rotation and the optical quality is excellent. Clear markings on the filter ring indicate the strength of the filter. I have been using the 82mm size for my 24-70 f/2.8 lens. You can stack additional filters with the front threads accepting 86mm filter size - larger to avoid vignette. One downside to the larger size, your lens hoods and lens caps no longer fit. They do offer additional sizes down to 52mm. B&H has the full list of sizes. So this sounds great - one affordable high-quality filter that gives you great versatility in the amount of light you block. There is a drawback and this is true of all variable filters, at certain strengths you can get a very noticeable X pattern in the sky. This makes these filters unusable in some situations.[himage]01_30.0 sec at f - 18I drew the white lines (in case that wasn't clear)[/himage][himage]02_15.0 sec at f - 18I drew the white lines (in case that wasn't clear)[/himage]The alternative is a non-variable ND filter which comes in various strengths. I generally recommend 3 or 6 stop for photographers looking to use in a variety of situations. You can stack ND filters though if you really want the ability to stack you should consider something like the LEE system which has very versatile setups. I have a link below to recommended sizes and strengths and will be talking about the Lee system after my Iceland trip.Recommended 3-stop filters (also labeled ND8 and 0.9)These will allow you to block 3 stops of light i.e 1/250 of a second to 1/30Budget: Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter (link to 77mm, make sure you purchase the correct size for your lenses)Premium: B+W 77mm 0.9 ND 103 FilterRecommended 6-stop filters (also labeled ND64 and 1.8)These will allow you to block 6 stops of light i.e 1/250 of a second to 1/4 of a second.Budget: Hoya 77mm Pro 1 Digital Neutral Density 64x Filter (link to 77mm, make sure you purchase the correct size for your lenses)Premium: B+W 77mm 1.8 ND MRC 106M FilterIf you want seriously long exposures in the middle of the day- the BIG STOPPER 10-stop ND filter is best.B+W 77mm 3.0 ND MRC 110M FilterAnd if you want control without using a variable - the Lee or Hitech filters are the way to go. They offer stacking and provide an easy way adjust graduated ND filters.More about the Lee Filter System at B&H Photo VideoBuy the Genustech Variable ND Filter from B&H Photo VideoScantips has an easy calculator to determine differences in stops.

Don't be a LAZY photographer

Many photographers want ND filters to get those more dreamy looking waterfalls or smooth water beach photos and if you find yourself at your location and you still can’t get long enough shutter speeds to get the look you desired you are probably being lazy and trying to photograph during the middle of the day when you have massive amount of light and the quality of the light is harsh and flat. Don’t be lazy - get up earlier when the light levels are lower and the quality is softer and more directional. Or just stay out till evening. For many years, I photographed loads of longer exposure waterfall photos without an ND filter.Learn more about circular polarizers - sometimes useful as an ND filter too.
