Eye-Fi Mobi Pro - Wireless RAW transfer

I have reviewed and generally been a fan of Eye-fi cards in the past. These are little SD cards that include WiFI capabilities along with modest storage. Last November I shared my setup of their Pro X2 cards for use in 7D Mark II, a camera sadly lacking in any WiFi capabilities.  My review of the mobi was less positive. With the mobi every photo you took transferred and for anyone taking more than a few photos this was a serious drain on battery life and something I found unnecessary. I continued to use the Pro X2 cards that required a more complicated setup allowed me easy selective transfer.   The newest card in the line up seems to marry the features of the Pro line with the ease of setup of the mobi line.Eye-Fi Mobi PROWhat does the Mobi Pro offer:

  • Cloud-connected WiFi SD card - includes 1yr Eyefi Cloud membership with unlimited photo storage
  • Transfer photos to smartphone, tablet, PC or Mac as you take them
  • Transfer both RAW, JPEG and video wirelessly at home or on-the-go.
  • Selective Transfer
  • Send RAW files to your desktop for post-processing with tools like Adobe Lightroom.

Why choose the Mobi SD card over your camera's built in Wifi?

  • RAW Transfer to desktop - This is something I get asked about frequently and few cameras offer image transfer to desktop computers and RAW transfer is even more rare.

Nikon D7200 Announced & My Thoughts

Nikon has announced the Nikon D7200 mid-level APS-C sensor camera.

Nikon D7200What you need to know about the Nikon D7200:

  • Body is nearly identical to the D7100, slight grip redesign similar to D750 and D5500
  • 24MP sensor (probably the same as in the D5500 - See my review of the D5500)
  • No Optical Low-Pass Filter (OLPF)
  • 51 AF Points, 15 cross type and Improved low light focusing capabilities
  • 6 FPS
  • Better/deeper buffer (allows more continuous shots before you see a slowdown. D7100 had a significantly smaller buffer.
  • Higher ISO range, 102,400 capable of B&W photos ONLY due to large amount of chroma noise.
  • 1080/60p ONLY in 1.3x crop mode
  • WiFi and NFC (NFC is a first for Nikon)
  • Better battery life, 160 more shots per charge vs D7100
  • Body only price: $1,196.95 - Preorder from B&H Photo | Adorama | Amazon
  • Body with 18-140 lens price: $1,496.95 $1,696.95 Preorder from B&H Photo | Adorama | Amazon (UPDATE: D7200 has been added to instant rebate list $200 savings)
  • Available/Shipping in MID MARCH

Rumors about articulating touch screen are FALSE.Nikon D7200Nikon D7200Nikon D7200 My quick thoughts on the Nikon D7200I was a fan of the D7100, it provides excellent manual controls and very good quality at a solid price. The value of the camera was high. I, like many photographers, were frustrated with the tiny buffer that really kept this camera from shining, it certainly made sports and wildlife photographers look for alternatives. It looks like they have addressed that issue and I expect this camera to perform well and sell well.Nikon D7100 and D7200 - Can you tell the difference?[vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"]D7200 Back[/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"]D7100 Back[/vc_column][/vc_row]

Nikon D5500 vs Nikon D7200 - Differences Explained Simply

They both offer 24MP sensors - likely the SAME sensorThe D7200 offers/Advantages over the D5500:

  • Full Manual Control and additional function buttons for customizing
  • larger more ergonomically designed camera (comfortable to hold for long stretches)
  • Auto focus compatibility with more lenses (in body focus motor, lacking in the D5500)
  • Faster AF system with 51 focus points (39 focus points in the D5500)

  • D7200 has a pentaprism viewfinder providing a brighter view and covers a full 100% of the image area. D5500 uses a pentamirror design which covers 95% of the image area.
  • Weather Sealing against dust/moisture
  • Increased top shutter speed 1/8000 sec vs 1/4000 sec in the D5500.
  • Increased flash sync speed 1/250 vs 1/200 in D5500

The D5500 offers/Advantages over the D7200:

  • Much lighter and smaller
    • D5500 weighs: 420 g (0.93 lb / 14.82 oz)

Cheap Photoshop Alternative - Affinity Beta

Affinity has announced a photoshop alternative that costs just $50 and is currently in beta and FREE.

Photoshop and Lightroom present a powerful combination that provides most photographers with everything they need for post processing. However, with Adobe's switch to a subscription based model for Photoshop, some photographers have been looking for alternatives. Personally I think 9.99/mo Lightroom/Photoshop is an excellent deal but I do appreciate that for some the idea of renting software doesn't sit well. There are alternatives - Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator (mac only), GIMP and now Affinity. Affinity is currently in beta and 100% free! Affinity seems to be a strong Photoshop alternative with very friendly RAW editing built-in (similar to Lightroom). I know Photoshop is very capable of working with RAW files but dislike the floating window and I miss my Lightroom panels. Affinity is much more similar to Lightroom in the panel and RAW editing respect.  The program is a serious Beta - meaning it is still missing some functionality and could be a bit buggier than you expect.  Once out of Beta the program will sell for $50 on the Mac Store. No word on a Windows version.  The signup for the Beta program takes just a second and automatically sends you a link to download the program. • $50 for a program that feels feature packed and all updates for two years will be free
  • Immediately the user interface felt comfortable and at the same time less annoying than Photoshop
  • All the tools I use in Photoshop are here and seem to work well- clone stamp, healing brush etc.

I Dislikes:

  • No integration with Lightroom. It is very easy for me to take a photo from Lightroom to Photoshop and back. I can also do this with the Nik system from Google but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get an edited image from Lightroom into this program without exporting from LR?

How do they manage a 40MP shot from a 16MP Sensor? The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II takes high-resolution imaging to a whole new level. In addition to the exceptional 16-megapixel stills you’ve come to expect from OM-D, the E-M5 Mark II captures 40-megapixel images*2 using an innovative pixel-shift technique that is facilitated by the voice-coil motor IS unit. The 40-Megapixel High-Res Shot mode captures eight sequential images, moving the sensor by 0.5-pixel steps between each shot. Then, the E-M5 Mark II compiles those images to produce a super-high resolution shot that rivals those captured with a 40-megapixel full-frame camera.Preorder at B&H Photo- $1099 (body only)Other Olympus News - EM-1 Owners will soon be able to update to 3.0 firmware giving you 9 fps, better continuous tracking and ability to use smartphone to control video. EOS-M3 First Look - Canon's Newest Mirrorless Camera

Update: The EOS-M3 will NOT be released outside of Europe/Asia.Specs:  Canon UK has a full Spec SheetWe have our first look at the new Canon EOS-M3, the successor to the EOS-M. Note- The M2 was only released in Asia.Screenshot 2015-02-03 09.57.48 Screenshot 2015-02-03 09.58.17And now a picture of the back courtesy of DSLR Forum DEScreenshot 2015-02-03 19.05.37Details are very light - we can see that there is a redesigned grip and the mode dial and drive mode dials have appeared, they were not present on earlier models and we know no that it will be compatible with Hotshoe EVF Attachment from Canon.Specs of the original EOS-M:

  • 18.0 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor (same as in Canon Rebel series)
  • DIGIC 5 Image Processor
  • ISO 100-12800; expandable to 25600 (H)
  • Hybrid CMOS AF (the largest complaint regarding this camera was slow AF)
  • EOS Full HD Movie mode with Movie Servo AF for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects
  • EOS-M Mount, Compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses (Optional EF Lens Adapter is required - no light loss or quality degradation - cost is $44.95)
  • 3.0" Touchscreen
  • Retailed for $899, now can be found around $300.

As I mentioned in the specs the largest complaint regarding this camera was the AF speed.  Canon addressed this with a firmware update in June 2013 and those I have spoken to were happier with the performance improvements but compared to similar mirrorless models it still lags behind. What do I want to see in the new EOS-M3?

  • Dual Pixel AF system from the Canon 70D
  • Same or better sensor as the Canon 70D
  • Wifi
  • Slightly articulating screen would be nice ala Sony A7 series (UPDATE: with the new leaked pic of the back it is confirmed that the screen will be at least slightly articulating!
  • Robust video options, higher bitrates and 60fps at 1080p

What do you want to see in this little camera?  Will be announced Feb 6th. Very few upgrades on the EOS-M2,

  • Faster focusing (2.3x speed is the claim)
  • 4.6 fps vs 4.3 in original
  • 10% smaller

Panasonic GF7 Announced - Specs and Thoughts

[gallery type="slideshow" link="none" columns="1" size="large" td_select_gallery_slide="slide" ids="6193,6192,6191,6190"] Panasonic has announced the GF7, a small mirrorless camera aimed at point and shoot users who want more control over settings.A follow up the GF6, the GF7 is slightly restyled and actually a little larger, giving you a better form factor to hold onto. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF7 key specifications:

  • 16MP Four Thirds sensor
  • Focus down to -4EV
  • 3" 1.04M dot rear LCD
  • 180 degree tilt "selfie" screen
  • 5.8 fps burst shooting
  • 1080/60p video in AVCHD or MP4 format
  • One touch "No Password" Wi-Fi connectivity
  • "Face", "Buddy" and "Jumping Selfie" shutter modes

More about those selfie modes -Selfies are no exception with new automatic shutter modes that offer the ability to capture more fluid, natural-looking self-portraits and group shots. Face Shutter allows a photo to be taken with a wave to the camera and Buddy Shutter recognizes when two faces are brought side-by side within the frame to instantly take a picture. In either case, more spontaneous facial expressions and poses are saved which could otherwise be lost in the process of waiting for a self-timer, or by having asked an inexperienced photographer to take your photo. The capabilities of the Lumix DMC-GF7 and a paired smartphone are further combined for even more dynamic selfies and group shots. Using the camera's touch-control 180° tiltable LCD monitor, you can position yourself and your friends in front of the lens to ensure that no one is outside of the frame even if everyone was to jump up for a mid-air portrait. When Jump Snap is activated, the accelerometer of a paired smartphone in your hand or pocket can be used to detect the highest point of your jump and simultaneously activate the shutter.Overall this should be a nice option for P&S users looking for more control and better image quality. It is a crowded market at this price and the Sony a6000 with a larger sensor gives you slightly better image quality and a viewfinder just minus some of the fun features and at a slightly larger size.Preorder the Panasonic GF7 at B&H for $599 - Shipping Late Feb.

Quick Thoughts on the Canon 7D Mark II

There is certainly some disappointment from videographers and some photographers that have been waiting for YEARS for the followup to the much loved Canon 7D.  In some respects it feels that Canon has continued to play it very safe with this release, no 4K, no WiFi or articulating touchscreen when just about every other serious camera released in the last year offers some or all of those features but I think there are two, maybe three reasons why this camera will still sell very well.1) Blisteringly fast FPS with serious autofocus brains at an affordable price- not everyone needs this but we are looking at the most competent focusing system at a price far below the 1Dx's $5000+ price tag.2) It lives in the Canon ecosystem - lenses make these cameras and having access to a huge and varied selection for a camera at this level is important and not to be overlooked.3) This all depends on that redesigned sensor-Canon states in their press release that this is a NEW sensor (not the same as is in the 70D) and I am starting to hear that maybe this provides the best APS-C performance of any sensor to date.  I suspect that might be pushing the truth some but I will reserve judgement until I get my hands on this camera. Now that it is official. What are your thoughts?Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.39 Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.52Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.19.57Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.03Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.09Screenshot 2014-09-15 08.20.15

Fuel Your Creative Passion With The Highly Anticipated Canon EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR Camera

New EOS 7D Mark II Camera Provides Captivating Creative Power at an Affordable PriceMELVILLE, N.Y., September 15, 2014 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to introduce the EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera, incorporating professional features and quality in an affordable DSLR. Building upon the proven success of the EOS 7D camera, this new EOS model features a range of "EOS firsts" such as Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors for superb image quality and rapid burst shooting up to 10 frames per second (fps), as well as Canon's first 65-Point* All Cross Type autofocus (AF) system for compositional freedom and accurate, spot-on fast focus. Great for shooting indoor activities such as sporting events, concerts, or weddings, the camera's impressive low-light shooting capabilities along with its up-to-10 fps high-speed shooting can capture a fast-break basketball dunk, a band's encore performance, a bird in flight or wildlife in exceptional quality. In addition, the EOS 7D Mark II is the second EOS DSLR camera to incorporate Canon's innovative Dual Pixel CMOS AF system for rapid and precise focusing of video as well as still images."With more processing power than any other EOS camera available today, the highly anticipated EOS 7D Mark II camera has everything serious photographers have come to expect from Canon's DSLRs and more," said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "And, recognizing that for some, creative expression may expand beyond still photography, we continue to support these creative passions by offering new and innovative Full HD video capabilities, such as second generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology in the EOS 7D Mark II camera as well."

Outstanding Performance

Within the camera's durable magnesium alloy body resides a newly developed 20.2 megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors, safeguarded by enhanced dust and weather resistance to protect the camera. Ideal for shooting in challenging lighting conditions ranging from indoor sports to dimly lit weddings, the camera features a standard ISO range of 100-16000 for both still and video (expandable to ISO 51,600). A new 65-point* All Cross-Type AF system with EV -3 sensitivity at the center point helps deliver sharp focus for still photos even in extreme low-light conditions on subjects with limited visible detail. The EOS 7D Mark II camera also features an enhanced version of Canon's EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF, originally introduced with the EOS-1D X DSLR camera, enabling the camera to recognize subjects based on face and color detection utilizing the new AE system, and can track subjects using all 65 AF points. The camera's improved EOS Scene Detection system features a new 150,000-pixel RGB+IR 252-zone metering sensor for enhanced precision. The wide-area 65-point AF array combined with EOS iTR and adjustable high-speed continuous burst shooting up to 10 fps enables the easy tracking and capturing of fast moving subjects virtually anywhere in the frame such as birds in flight or running backs eluding a tackle. A new and innovative AF Area Selection Lever nestled around the multi-controller on the back of the camera makes it easier than ever for photographers to switch between the seven supplied AF Point Selection modes without removing their eye from the viewfinder. At 10 fps, the camera's buffer capacity can consecutively capture up to 31 RAW images or 1,090 Large Fine JPEGsi. Built to last, the camera also features a shutter durability rating up to 200,000 cycles, approximately thirty three percent more than the original EOS 7D camera. A newly developed mirror mechanism uses motorized control to help reduce impact and enhance camera performance during high-speed continuous shooting. In addition to adjustable high- and low-speed continuous shooting modes, single-frame shooting and two self-timer settings, the EOS 7D Mark II camera also features silent drive modes for single frame and continuous shooting. The silent settings support discreet camera operation in quiet locations. The EOS 7D Mark II camera's advanced AE system can detect and compensate for flickering light sources such as sodium vapor lamps that are often used in gymnasiums and indoor swimming pools. When enabled, this system automatically adjusts shutter release timing to help reduce disparities in exposure and color especially during continuous shooting.

Innovative AF Technology

The EOS 7D Mark II camera features the next generation of Canon's exclusive Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF) technology, originally introduced with the EOS 70D DSLR camera. New DAF features include user-selectable adjustments for Movie Servo AF Speedii and Movie Servo AF Tracking Sensitivity. Additionally, overall focusing speed, face detection performance, and performance in low light and with low-contrast subjects have been improved over previous Canon models. Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs proprietary Canon sensor technology in which effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-detection focus measurement simultaneously to achieve dramatically improved AF performance in both video and Live View still imaging modes. With Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF system and customizable Movie Servo AF, the camera provides continuous phase-detection AF during video recording for quick and accurate focus tracking of moving subjects over approximately eighty of the image area measured horizontally and vertically. DAF focusing modes include Face Detection with Tracking, FlexiZone Multi with 31 AF zones, and FlexiZone Single that allows users to position a focusing frame on the camera's LCD screen. Canon's DAF supports over 100iii models of Canon EF lenses (including many earlier models), providing a wide array of options for photographers to explore.

Expanding Creativity

The EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera provides a wealth of creative controls building on the features and functions of the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X professional digital cameras. The new camera's AI Servo AF III autofocusing algorithm is similar to that of the EOS-1D X camera in that tracking parameters (tracking sensitivity, acceleration/deceleration tracking, and AF point auto switching) can be easily customized for specific shooting situations, using the same type of AF Configuration Menu. This capability makes it easy for EOS 7D Mark II camera users to match AI Servo AF settings when used together with EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III cameras, while also providing a high level of performance at an affordable price point. The EOS 7D Mark II camera also offers the same level of High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Multiple Exposure (ME) functionality that was originally featured in the EOS 5D Mark III camera. The HDR mode includes five HDR shooting functions and allows users to save all source images in addition to the composited HDR image. Similarly, Multiple Exposure mode provides four compositing methods and also allows users to save individual source images.Photographers and cinematographers will appreciate improved custom controls including a built-in intervalometer and bulb timer, also EOS DSLR firsts, to enable the capture of time-lapse images and long- exposure images. These features are ideal for recording fireworks, star trails, sunrises and more.In addition to optional settings for Peripheral Illumination Correction and Chromatic Aberration Correction, found in other current high-end EOS models, the EOS 7D Mark II camera, for the first time, adds Distortion Correction that operates with most EF and EF-S lenses to improve image quality even further while recording video and in-camera JPEGs. The My Menu feature has also been improved with the ability to store more user-selected settings in five additional tabs.A new and improved Intelligent Viewfinder provides approximately one hundred percent field of view, while adding the ability to superimpose a customizable selection of camera settings data such as dual-mode electronic level display, grid, exposure mode, white balance mode and AF mode. A bright, three-inch Clear View II LCD monitor (approximately 1,040,000 dots) on the back of the camera displays information and menus clearly even in bright sunlight. The EOS 7D Mark II camera is compatible with interchangeable focusing screens including the standard Eh-A as well as the optional Eh-S Super Precision Matte for use during manual focusing with large aperture lenses.A built-in GPSiv Receiver provides a digital compass and can record location information including longitude, latitude, elevation, camera direction and universal coordinated time (UTC) as EXIF data for geotagging both images and movie files in real time. The built-in pop-up flash is convenient for many applications and can also act as an optical controller with compatible off-camera EX-series Speedlites for enhanced pro-quality lighting effects. The EOS 7D Mark II camera features dual card slots for SD/SDHC/SDXC and CF memory cards, including Ultra High Speed (UHS-1) SD cards. Data transfer speeds from the camera to a personal computer are enhanced with the addition of a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port.

Stunning Movie Capability

The EOS 7D Mark II camera offers users the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD or 720p HD video up to 60p enabling slow-motion capture at full resolution in either ALL-I or IPB codecs with optional embedded time code, exceeding the specifications of other current EOS cameras. Users can also choose between .MOV and .MP4 recording formats for maximum flexibility. The EOS 7D Mark II camera's mini HDMI port can be used to record uncompressed Full HD video to external recorders.Canon's Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, such as the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, significantly reduce focus motor noise, letting the EOS 7D Mark II camera's built-in microphone capture clear audio of the scene being shot without picking up unwanted noise from the lens. The EOS 7 D Mark II camera also features a stereo microphone port and outputs stereo audio via the camera's mini-HDMI port. The EOS 7D Mark II Digital SLR camera is equipped with a headphone jack for real-time audio monitoring, as well as a silent control feature that allows users to adjust audio levels during recordings. Other built-in ports include a PC socket for external flash units and an N3 socket for dedicated Canon wired remote control accessoriesv. A cable protector is provided to maximize safety when using the USB 3.0 and mini-HDMI ports.

The D750 sits just below the D810, borrowing and actually improving on the AF system with 51 AF points.  It does include a popup flash and all of the video features of the D810 but adds WiFI and a tilty screen.  In this crowded line up the D750 offers lots to love and the body only price point is reasonable for a camera at this level.  I expect that this will be in high demand through fall and into winter. New Camera Announcements ahead of CP+

Another fairly big photo show starts up next week - CP+ in Japan.   Traditionally camera announcements around this time are fairly consumer orientated - not high end professional stuff - no 7D Mark II- what we will see, and the flood gates opened last night, is new P&S models and a new Micro Four Thirds camera from Panasonic that is quite exciting!Nikon has announced -Nikon Coolpix P600, 60x optical zoom bridge camera - 60X zoom.  I wonder if you can see the Lunar Module on the Moon with that?Nikon Coolpix S9700, 30x pocket compact with Wi-FiNikon Coolpix S32, underwater all-weather compactNikon Coolpix AW120, Rugged pocket camera with Wi-Fi - This is also waterproof, not sure why they are burying that in the description.Nikon Coolpix P340, Low-light, fast lens compact with Wi-Fi - The most exciting of the bunch.Nikon Coolpix P530, 42x zoom compact with EVF and Wi-Fi - Interesting to see a traditional P&S get an EVF added - they are great for outside shooting in the sun,Adorama has a nice page with pics and pricing - Honestly there isn't anything here that is terribly exciting. I do like that an EVF has been added, this is a promising trend that can give P&S cameras a little more usefulnessScreenshot 2014-02-07 11.43.10

 Lumix DMC-GH4

More exciting is the announcement from Panasonic of their new Micro Four Thirds camera, the Lumix DMC-GH4, capable of shooting 4K video.Focus is very high quality video up to 200 Mbits (just accept that this means high quality video), New autofocus time that should decrease focus to a fast 0.07 seconds and like the Fuji XT-1 mentioned in our Photo Mish Mash Podcast #5- a gorgeous 2 million OLED EVF (electronic view finder). WiFi, PC Sync for external flash/strobe control. Silent mode that only uses the electronic shutter (this is how video works). The feature set of the Panasonic G series is excellent, especially when it comes to video with several functions targeting the serious videographer- Focus peaking & Zebra patterns(an easy way to manually see what is in focus)- precise control over luminance and gamma settings and ability to output clean HDMI with embedded time code.See my full review of the GH4More Specs on the Adorama Page- Pricing and availability yet to be determined.  It will not be cheap.
