Yi M1 Mirrorless Camera Just Announced

group1-1 group8

An entry level camera from China is making the rounds at Photokina this week. The Yi M1 has the design of a Leica camera with a 20.16MP Micro Four Thirds sensor from Sony for only $330. Young Innovators, or YI Technologies in the US, was in the news recently for their move into the action camera market. The YI 4k Action Camera 2 had decent review while undercutting the GoPro by $200. Considering this mirrorless is using tech from Sony it has a good chance of doing okay as an entry level option. Aimed at the entry level crowd the camera itself only has two buttons and no viewfinder, opting for the three inch touchscreen to handle the workload.89a7c8a0-7e40-11e6-be40-cd4343874df8-png-hm As for options it’s a Micro Four Thirds with a Sony Sensor allowing for plenty of non YI MFT lenses available. Coming with the camera is a 12-40mm F/2.5-5.6 zoom lens or a combo with a 42.5mm F/1.8 macro prime. As a kit it’s $330, the dual lens set will sell for $450. fenxThe Yi M1 uses the 20.16MP Sony IMX269, actually the same sensor in the Olympus Pen-F giving it 4K (30fps), fast continuous shooting, and RAW image capability. This allows it a speed of five frames per second and a 81 point focus system which is good for a entry level camera. As for RAW it saves in Adobe DNG making it work perfectly with Lightroom. Bluetooth and Wifi are included for fast mobile sharing and remote control of the camera. Other accessories such as a backpack (costs $60), filters, and etc. have been announced by name but no details as of yet. The Y1 M1 will be out Sept. 23rd in China and later for the US. As their first real go at the mirrorless market it’s hard not to say it’s a decent try at a entry level option.Specifications:

Fuji brings it’s beautiful sensors to a medium format camera – should the mere mortals get excited?

gfx_front_63mm gfx_sideleft_63mm_evf

Since June Fujifilm’s been rumored to have a “medium format killer” in the works set to change the game and now we’ve finally got a look in their Photokina announcement. The new Fuji GFX 50S is a sub $10,000 camera that will bring great image quality on a budget comparatively to other medium format options available at the moment. The first in a new GFX line of medium format camera’s with the GFX 50S slated for early next year.  Using a new Fujifilm G sensor that’s sized up to 43.8×32.9mm in 51.4 megapixel resolution you’ll be needing more hard drives to store your photos. Defaults for the sensor will be a 4:3 aspect ratio but can be set to other formats. Being mirrorless another option for shooters is a removable viewfinder allowing the user to choose to use the viewfinder when needed or the back screen. The GFX 50S will be weather and dust sealed, to what degree they did not specify, giving it the durability for outdoor shots. As Fuji the camera should deliver great image quality for professionals shooting commercial, fashion, or landscapes. gfx_front_evf2untitled-1

For the new G Mount system Fuji has released a new set of lenses to go with the camera. As follows we’ve got a set of 5 primes covering the field, one being macro, and a standard zoom so far. The Fuji GFX 50S is expected to ship 2017 alongside their 63mm, 120mm, and 32-64mm lenses.

  • Ultra-wide “GF23mmF4 R LM WR” (equivalent to 18mm in 35mm format) Coming mid 2017
  • Wide “GF45mmF2.8 R WR” (equivalent to 35mm in 35mm format) Coming late 2017
  • Standard prime “GF63mmF2.8 R WR” (equivalent to 50mm in the 35mm format) Coming early 2017
  • Fast aperture mid-telephoto “GF110mmF2 R LM WR” (equivalent to 87mm in 35mm format) Coming mid 2017
  • Mid-telephoto macro 1:0.5 “GF120mmF4 Macro R LM OIS WR” (equivalent to 95mm in 35mm format) Coming early 2017
  • Wide-angle standard zoom “GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR” (equivalent to 25-51mm in 35mm format) Coming early 2017

untitled-2As for those pixel peepers out there they’ve released a sample image showing how much detail the sensorcan pull from an image. With the new CMOS sensor putting out 51.4MP files it’s hard to complain looking at the photo zoomed in this far.

With the announcement of the FX 50S Fuji released a few videos of development and testing to watch. ef-hr-ef70-300-side-hires In a bit of Pre-Photokina news Canon announces an update to the aged Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens. The 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 IS II USM is a nice addition as it’s predecessor came out in 2005. It’s needed a bit of an update comparatively to the newer EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM and a full frame option to fill a mid range selection in the lens ecosystem. Featuring:Sample Image

Nikon Announcement

A new lineup from Nikon- DL You might have noticed the lens and camera announcements have been fast and furious over the last week as we lead up to CP+ - A big international photo show held in Japan. First we had the Canon 80D, then the new Tamron prime lenses, Sigma's new lenses (cameras too) and the Sigma to FE mount adapter, Panasonics new 12-60 lens and now SIX new cameras from Nikon.  Three are boring Coolpix P&S cameras but the three pictured above is a new line from Nikon - the DL Series. These are all use a 20.8MP CX-format sensor - that's a 1 inch sensor similar to the Sony RX 100 line - clearly a competitor Nikon has set their sights on.  Additionally and like the Sony each of these cameras is capable of shooting 4K video.  Wifi/NFC, 120fps at 1080p round out the main features.  The also all share flip up (or flip out0 touchscreens.   The differences? Focal range/zoom really with a few additional features to support each range. Nikon DL SeriesNikon DL18-50 f/1.8-2.8 Digital Camera Pre Order from B&H Photo - Available June, 28 2016 for $846Highlight Feature: Perspective Control - accurately depict architectural subjects and correct converging lines. My own notes - This may be the new perfect vlogging camera - starting at that wide 18mm is great for hand holding and talking to the camera.  I don't know of anything else that starts as wide with this sized sensor in a compact body.

Nikon DLNikon DL24-85 f/1.8-2.8 Digital Camera Pre Order from B&H Photo - Available June, 28 2016 for $646Highlight Features:
  • Built-in ND filter for maintaining slower shutter speeds or wider aperture settings in bright conditions.
  • A Super Macro mode and Focus Bracketing features are also available for producing close-up imagery with life-size magnification with extended depth of field.

My Own Notes - If you don't need the wider 18mm of the first model this price is hard to beat - a great focal range, ND filter And the macro mode all for $646!

Sigma to Sony Converter MC-11

Along with the new 50-100 f/1.8 and the 30mm f/1.4 DN announced last night - Sigma has also announced at Mount Converter - Similar to the Metabones and Commlite adapters - this adapter/converter whatever you want to call it allows you to use Sigma's lenses designed for Canon EF on Sony E- Mount with full electronic control.  Price is just $249. This is exciting! As A sony owner I also happen to have a few Sigma lenses and can tell you that both the commlite and metabones adapters provide a poor experience with the Sigma lenses - especially the commlite, I wouldn't even call it functioning - loses connection constantly.   Hopefully having an adapter direct from Sigma will provide much better results with Sigma lenses.Preorder from B&H Photo  for $249.00Full press release from Sigma below.
New Sigma Global Vision Lens Mount Converter Expands High-Performance Lens Options for Sony CamerasBrings Sigma’s Global Vision Lenses to the Sony E-Mount Camera FamilyKANAGAWA, JAPAN – February 23, 2016Sigma Corporation of America, a leading DSLR lens, camera, flash and accessories manufacturer, today announced the release of its new high-performance Sigma Global Vision lens converter – the Mount Converter MC 11 – for Sony E-mount, full frame and APS-C sensor cameras. With the new MC-11, Sony camera users will be able to utilize 19 Global Vision lenses in Sigma Canon Mount (EOS) and Sigma Mount (SA).“There are many challenges to designing high-quality mount converter and topping the list is aptly handling phase detection AF in newer cameras and this is where the Sigma MC-11 is groundbreaking in its support for the Sony E-mount systems,” states Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The new Sigma MC-11 mitigates complications with a purpose-built lens control data system engineered for maintaining superior AF functionality. So the growing number of Sony E-mount camera users who have been asking for more lens options, now have access to a large pool of lenses that fully embody Sigma’s signature quality and performance.”The Sigma MC-11’s sleek LED display lets Sony users know if the attached Sigma lens is compatible and whether or not the MC-11 needs to be updated for that specific lens. Its internal control data system keeps detailed information on each compatible Sigma lens, automatically optimizing performance of AF drive, aperture control and other critical lens functions. The MC-11’s internal control data system also maintains continuity with key camera functions that control brightness and correct transverse chromatic aberration, distortion, and more. The complete compatibility with both Sigma lens OS and Sony in-camera OS ensures correction of camera shake and other stability issues and when used with in-camera stabilization, MC-11 allows angle shake correction in the lens. The integrated flocking helps prevent internal reflections and reduction in lens performance. In addition, the MC-11 retains important EXIF data ensuring users can analyze every detail of their lens setting. The Sigma MC-11 converter can be updated with the latest compatible lens information from a workstation or laptop using the Sigma Optimization Pro software and Sigma USB Dock (sold separately). For information on the Sigma MC-11 converter please visit www.sigmaphoto.com/mount-converter-mc-11.

New Tamron Lenses Announced

Truthfully one new and one updated. Tamron has announced the

Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

NEW Tamron 85 f/1.8 VC - This looks similar to their other recent lens offerings - the 35mm and 45mm f/1.8 VC lenses that have been well liked by photographersTamron 85MM f/1.8 VC

  • Nikon F Mount/FX Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.8 to f/16
  • LD and XLD Glass Elements

  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

Price and availability have not yet been announced. B&H Listing to Notify when in Stock  I bet somewhere around $600 USD.  Canon offers the 85mm f/1.8 non stabilized that is a staple in many budget photographers bag- it is a decent lens, costs just $369 and while it suffers from some serious chromatic aberration wide open and it certainly could be more contrasty - it is under $400.   I do think this new Tamron will be noticeable sharper and of course offers VC.  I am not convinced that it will see well though. Nikon offers two 85mm lenses - an 85mm f/1.8 for $469 and an 85mmf/1.4 for $1560

Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC

And the Updated 90 f/2.8 Macro - I am a bit surprised- their current 90mm Macro is a great value and holds up well against the competition - see below for the updates to this model. Tamron 90mm f/2.8

  • Canon EF Mount/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/32
  • One LD and Two XLD Glass Elements

What has changed from the previous model? Sounds like optically it is going to be the same but you now have an improved VC system, the new cleaner look Tamron has used on these lenses and the TAP-in console compatibility.Price: Preorder from B&H Photo or Amazon for $649 (available in Canon, Nikon and Sony A Mounts)

Tamron TAP-in Console

The TAP-In console sounds very similar to the USB dock offered by Sigma. It acts as a lens mount with USB connection to your computer. Mount the lens and open the Tamron software will allow you to update firmware and further customize the lens.  No word on price - should be available starting in March.  B&H has a listinginTAPCurrently compatible with their newest lenses onlySP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD (Model F016): Launch date TBAFor Nikon and Canon. Canon 80D Officially Announced

The Canon 80D has now been officially announced- The leaked specs were extremely accurate - there is additional information to suggest that the dual pixel AF system has been improved and the kit lens is now upgraded to IS USM, no longer STM- read more below.  How does the 80D compare to the 70D and T6s? Watch the video below and visit 80D vs 70D vs T6s/T6i for more info.Preorder Available from B&H Photo  Expected at the End of March.Canon EOS 80D DSLR Camera with 18-135mm Lens $1,799Canon EOS 80D Body Only $1,199Canon 80D with popup flashheadphone and mic jackFlipout touchscreenCanon 80D

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor (more than the 20MP from the 7D Mark II)
  • DIGIC 6 Image Processor
  • IMPROVED Dual pixel CMOS AF - noted as significantly better than 70D
  • Continuous shooting 7 frames / sec - Live view 5 frames / sec. (AF tracking)
  • AF 45 points (all points cross type) 7D mark II has 65 Cross type. 70D has 19.
  • 7560 pixel RGB + IR metering sensor
  • ISO 100-16000
  • flickerless shooting (adopted from the 7D Mark II) - this enables more consistent exposures in gym/arena lighting
  • Finder is 100% field of view - up from 98% with the 70D
  • 3 inches vari-angle touch screen LCD monitor.- The same as 70D
  • 1080p 60 fps - Up from 30fps with the 70D and on par with 7D Mark II
  • Time-lapse movie & additional creative filters for video - Something Canon finally started adding with the 5DS series.
  • Wi-Fi, NFC - remote shooting by smartphone - I doubt this will include video start and stop- probably only photo remote control as you can do now with 70D.

Dial of the 70D compared to the 80D - really the only exterior difference I can find other than the viewfinder upgrade.Canon 70D DialDial of 80D80D looks to add Custom 1 AND Custom 2 to the dial along with filters for video (possibly) (between SCN and C2)These look like decent upgrades - nothing ground breaking and compared to other options, like the newly announced a6300, this looks like Canon is still behind the curve but if you have a rebel, and a few canon lenses this does represent a decent upgrade and a solid hybrid camera - video and photo capable. The 80D will be bundled with a NEW 18-135 lens - no longer STM - But USM with a new designation of NANO USM. I suspect this allows for the continued smooth and silent focusing that STM provided but with additional speed to support the faster AF system in live view/dual pixel AFCanon 18-135 IS Nano USM What do you think of these specs? Enough to warrant an upgrade from a 70D? How about T5i or even T6i/T6s owners? The battery grip offered on the page is the same as the 70D- as we suspected the body is identical and use of the 70D battery grip is possible.Preorder Available from B&H Photo  Expected at the end of March.Canon EOS 80D DSLR Camera with 18-135mm Lens $1,799Canon EOS 80D DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens $1,349Canon EOS 80D Body Only $1,199Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens $599And if you wished your DSLR was more like a camcorder you can addCanon PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter for just $149

Sony A6300 4K for the Masses

Sony has announced the long awaited successor to the a6000.  The new camera simply called the a6300 does offer some significant advancements worth the wait and a one disappointing features still missing from most of the Sony line.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDpM190WmXcThe Key features of the new Sony

  • 24MP CMOS APS-C sensor with copper wiring (same MP as a6000 but upgraded sensor)
  • 425-point on-sensor phase-detection AF system (HUGE number of AF points and good coverage out to the frame edges)
  • 11 fps continuous shooting (8fps continuous live view) (Same as a6000 but live view continuous is now faster)
  • Silent shooting
  • Max ISO of 51200 (I expect high ISO in this camera will be excellent)
  • 4K video capture up to 100 Mbps (Offering some of the best 4K in an ILC at this price point)
  • Sturdier magnesium construction and some weather sealing vs the original a6000
The body is almost identical to the a6000 - same tilting screen, same resolution. Button placement looks identical with the addition of an AEL switch on the back - likely giving you additional customization options similar to the a7 full frame series.
The 11FPS matches the a6000, the improvement comes when shooting live view- up to 8fps with a very short blackout between frames allowing better tracking of moving subjects and the AF system offers a  new 4D tracking system with dynamically activated AF points around your subject and the camera will adjust depending on the motion of the subject itself..   I expect this camera will now match and beat the latest DSLRs in the same price range.4K at 100mbits with oversampling from the whole sensor! What that all means - this 4K footage should be excellent, low noise even at higher ISOs and very sharp.  No additional crop (beyond the standard 1.5x sony aps-c crop) while shooting video which means this camera is going to be much better for some videographers than the double the price Nikon D500.What is disappointing? No Touchscreen. Almost all other DSLRs at this price point offer a touchscreen and despite the smaller size and a few fewer buttons Sony still hasn't offered a touchscreen.  The electronic viewfinder (EVF) is also the same and I didn't love the a6000 EVF- it is a bit dull.   Also much smaller annoyance  still USB 2.0.  USB 3.0 would be nice at this point when you want to transfer files without Wifi or even tethering. No in body image stabilization (IBIS) as some people had hoped - I didn't expect that at this level and price point but if you want that and the small size you need to look at the Olympus or step up to full frame.Overall I expect this camera to sell very well and is likely the first camera to offer 4K and sell as well as it will - basically Sony just brought 4K to the masses.  Expect grandma's birthday party footage to be 4k now ;)The Sony α6300  will be available in MarchPreorder now from B&H Photo Sony a6300 (Body Only) $998.00 | Sony a6300 with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 LensSony A6300Sony also announced a pile of PRO lenses including a new 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 and an 85mm f/1.4. Nikon Announcements - D5 and D500

Nikon announced two new cameras at CES - The D5 and the D500. The D5 is Nikon's flagship, replacing the still excellent D4s.  Full Frame 20MP, awesome focusing powerNikon D5Headline features of the D5

  • 20.8MP FX-Format CMOS Sensor
  • 3.2" 2.36m-Dot Touchscreen LCD Monitor (review functions only)
  • 4K UHD Video Recording at 30 fps (limited to 3 minutes internally)
  • Multi-CAM 20K 153-Point AF System
  • Dedicated AF processor and 99/153 focus points are cross-type. (first to offer dedicated AF processor)
  • Native ISO 102400, Extend to ISO 3280000  (Yes, that's 3 million ISO)
  • 12 fps Shooting for 200 Shots with AE/AF - Huge Buffer for full raw
  • 180k-Pixel RGB Sensor and Group Area AF
  • 14-Bit Raw Files and 12-Bit Raw S Format
  • Two versions of the D5 a dual XQD card slot version and a dual CF card slot (same price)

Available in Mid March for $6500 - Preorder from B&H Photo or AmazonThis is a beast of a camera - suited for professional sports photographers and others that need amazing speed, focusing power and excellent low light capabilities.  Interesting that it does allow 4K recording but limits that to just 3 minutes.  If you record to an external device like an Atomos Shogun you can record for much longer.    I am not sure what else to say about this camera- it's heavy, expensive and powerful. Offering a nice step forward in the evolution. You can purchase a model with dual CF cards (they are still way faster than SD of the even fast XQD memory slots- they are similar in size and shape to compact flash but offer speeds up to 1 Gbit/s read and write speed. Nikon Also announced the D500 Nikon D500- Crop Sensor BeastHeadline Features of the Nikon D500

  • 4K UHD Video Recording at 30 fps (also limited to 3 minutes internally)

  • Native ISO 51200, Extend to ISO 1640000
  • 10 fps Shooting for Up to 200 Frames
  • Built-In Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC  (Low Power Bluetooth is used to keep a constant connection to smartphone, like Samsung NX1 - can push images to phone automatically)

Nikon D500 Top ViewThis camera is going to be very interesting to do a Canon 7D Mark II vs Nikon D500. I feel like Nikon looked at the complaints about the 7D Mark II and said - yea, we can give you a camera like that and fix ALL of your complaints and then some!    This also shows that Nikon is committed to the crop sensor format.     Taking the same focusing system from the $6500 D5 and putting it in a crop sensor like the D500 is impressive - this gives you coverage out to the very edge of the frame with the higher accuracy cross type points! And I am sure this camera will be excellent at tracking fast moving subjects.Nikon D500 Tilting TouchscreenNikon has introduced a tilting touchscreen that provides full control of the camera -menu navigation and settings control, and is usable while shooting, giving you the ability to choose a focus point or an area to set the white balance from. The screen can also be used as a keyboard for quickly entering notes, copyright info, or IPTC information.  4K capable, though limited to just 3 minutes internally - if you need longer pickup an external device like an Atomos Shogun. And Nikon has introduced a wifi/bluetooth connectivity system similar to the excellent system in the Samsung NX1. You have the ability to have a low power constant connection to your smartphone pushing images as you take them.  No more fiddling with connections each time you want to grab an image.  I loved the NX1 version of this and I am happy to see it adopted by Nikon.  Hopefully canon will follow suit.I'd love to know what you think about these two cameras?  Leave a comment below. Also announced is a new Flash System with radio, the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight, similar to the Canon 600RT system we use at weddings and love.  See the complete list of new gear from Nikon. Canon shooters feeling jealous? We should know more about the 1DX Mark II later this month and the 5D Mark IV in early March - if not sooner.   As far as crop sensor cameras go we will not see any updates on the 7D Mark II for at least a year- it is a fantastic camera, I just wish they had added some connectivity options and a touchscreen.

New Bonus for Patreon Members - Lightroom Performance Tips

Screenshot-2015-04-21-12.35.01Wish Lightroom was a bit faster? As a bonus to Patreon support members we've got a new guide for performance tips to get you going. As a bit of a sneak peek, most people don't realize Lightroom can be sped up with just a few clicks.By running Optimize Catalog in Lightroom (File > Optimize Catalog) the program takes the time to go through the catalog and do a bit of clean up. Small catalogs won’t see much of an improvement, but larger ones with thousands of files will start to see decent gains for the couple minutes it takes to run an optimization. Just like defragmentation on a hard drive, this gives Lightroom the chance to clean house and get back to a proper working order. Patreon-logo

Fujifilm X-T10 Mirrorless Announced

Fuji has announced a smaller, cheaper version of their much loved X-T1.Why is the X-T1 much loved?  An excellent sensor, nice manual controls with a good ecosystem of lenses, including two well performing kit lenses 18-55 and 18-135 all wrapped up in a retro styled weather sealed body offering an amazing viewfinder. What you need to know: The Fuji X-T10 offers the same sensor (APS-C) and many of the same features as the X-T1 in a body that is smaller, lighter, cheaper. Part of the savings comes from a cheaper kit lens, though you can buy the X-T10 with more expensive 18-55 that comes with the X-T1 now.

  • 16.3 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II Sensor (same sensor as X-T1)
  • EXR Processor II (same processor as X-T1)
  • 0.39" 2,360k-Dot 0.62x OLED Viewfinder (slightly smaller viewfinder vs X-T1)

You give up the weather sealing, a slightly larger viewfinder, compatibility with the battery grip but you get an excellent sensor in a well built camera that belongs to a solid ecosystem of excellent lenses and offers the updated AF system that brings it on par with the Sony a6000. The Sony a6000 remains my pick for all around mirrorless camera but photographers that crave a better viewfinder and more manual control this is a better option and provides a little more room to grow as a photographer with additional fast lenses that Sony doesn't have in their line up. Watch my Review/Interview with Photographer Nathan Smith on his X-T1https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF09VBxakIk
