In Case You Missed It, Variable ND Filter vs Non-Variable ND

If you’re looking for longer shutter speeds to get a dreamy effect in water or trailing lights from traffic in the city a ND filter is your best bet. While a simple 10 stop ND filter works for some things it can be a bit strong for your shot. Check out Toby’s article and video this week about variable ND filters vs non-variable.http://photorec.tv/2015/08/variable-nd-filter-vs-non-variable-nd/

Nikon Announces New 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR, 24mm f/1.8G ED, and 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lenses

A few higher end lenses from Nikon announced this week to fill out their existing line up. A new copy of the standard 24-70mm format, a fast 24mm prime, and a new long range telephoto. The new 24-70 is boasted to be much sharper than its previous iteration but as prices stand currently will that be $600 of a difference.Pre-Order at B&H:Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VRNikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.8G EDNikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR

New Canon Flagship Camera to be Annouced as the EOS-1D X Price Drops

In the take with a grain of salt today the new rumor is that a new DSLR replacement for the current high end EOS-1DX is coming due to recent price cuts. Considering the current model was announced in 2011 it is time for an upgrade but don’t expect much until 2016.

Whoa, This Full-Frame Camera Shoots at ISO 4,000,00020150730_me20fsh_front

Canon has a new video camera with a bit of a twist, a sensor with 4 million ISO. The Canon ME20F-SH is a 2MP camera that has a MSRP of $30,000 so it’s being marketed towards high end film. In the end for us though it's technology that, hopefully, might trickle down so we might see benefits for DSLRs in the future.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPuT7R7JVxk

Fujifilm Officially Announces the X-T1 IR (Infrared) Mirrorless Camera

Fujifilm announced a new camera that also has a special sensor, in this case it can see ultraviolet and infrared. Quite useful for professional work that needs such frequencies such forensics, healthcare, and scientists. While it can be used for some day to day IR photography one big benefit would be Astrophotography as it can capture more available light than a similar model without infrared. Unfortunately for all the good it does this camera is currently spreading on the news as technically it may be able to see through clothes.

Good-Bye Polarized Filters: Olympus Patents Polarized Sensor Technology

If you happen to like polarizers, but are annoyed carrying around more filters, Olympus might have a solution. While there isn’t anything solid out yet they’ve filed a patent for a sensor with a built in polarizing filter. As Sony has filed for a different but similar method previously it’s something that we hopefully might see in the future.ozo-press-photo-black2

Nokia Reveals Ozo, a Futuristic New Camera for Filming Virtual Reality

While its design makes me think it’s going to start glowing red and say hello Dave, Nokia’s new virtual reality camera Ozo might be interesting. As multiple companies such as Google, GoPro, Samsung, and Jaunt are in the field everyone wants a bite of the new virtual reality market. As its priced in the five figure range Ozo is made for professionals for use in films, gaming, applications such as maps, and education. Whether it sticks around or not is for the future to decide but with how many variations are in the market one model is bound to make it.

Insight into Sony and Zeiss Partnership

As its been brought into question lately via a few news stories Zeiss clarified what it means to have the Zeiss branding on a Sony lens. While most of it is straightforward the article is worth a read if you’ve ever been curious.

What Adobe's Big News About CS6 & Acr Means for You

With the latest update to Photoshop Adobe stuck another nail in the coffin of those using the CS6 version to skip paying for the cloud. Adobe killed updates to Adobe Camera Raw for Photoshop CS6 which in the meantime isn’t a large problem but it is a future one. As new gear arrives on the market CS6 can’t support you’re stuck with the free Adobe DNG converter to use RAW photos which kills a simple workflow.

Lightroom CC 2015.1.1 & Photoshop CC 2015.0.1 Updates Now Available

As with the above story Lightroom and Photoshop have new updates. While there are no miraculous new features they do fix a list of bugs in the system.

Kentucky Man Who Shot Drone out of the Sky with Shotgun Arrested; Faces Two Felony Charges

Another day, another drone shot out of the sky story. In Kentucky a man thought a drone was spying on his daughter, at a 250’ altitude, so it had to go. Like most of these stories firing a shotgun straight up into the air, in the city limits, is not a good idea. In the end the pilot is out a pricey drone and the homeowner is looking at two felonies for damaging the drone and shooting in city limits.

KFC Has Created a Fried Chicken Bucket That Doubles as an Instant Photo Printer

KFC has been in a bit of a tech binge lately, earlier in the year in Germany their promotion involved adding bluetooth keyboard liners to trays in Germany to stop greased up phones. It’s short on details but in Canada KFC is promoting a bucket with a instant photo printer. Because yes, you really need to keep that photo of you eating a bucket of chicken.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NP8ju1RDkcCLG2ZJHW8AE-Y4-

Find A Photo, Get A Waffle

In more Food & Photo related news Google advertised their new Google Photos revamp with waffles over the weekend. Food trucks in New York City gave out free waffles if you show them a photo of a certain subject on Google Photos before the time runs out. Why Waffles? I have no clue.

Use $3.5 Tube Guards for Epic Light Painting Photographytubes-03-670x446

In clever light painting, Eric Pare came up with a new and cheap idea for a lightsource. Using fluorescent bulb tube guards and a couple bright lights you can effectively make a large lightsource."Once you got [the tube guards], it’s really simple, you set your camera on a tripod on bulb mode, and you trigger by yourself using a remote. On these 2, I used 2x 300 lumens flashlights inside the tubes, and I simply created the shapes behind Kim. Exposure time: about 3 seconds."

Variable ND Filter vs Non-Variable ND

https://youtu.be/lJGmo4cS0s4The Genustech variable neutral density filter or fader lets you easily control the amount of light entering your camera. With a twist of the ring, you can reduce the light from 2 to 8 stops. This can be useful if you want to shoot at slower shutter speeds during the day- like a waterfall, ocean or crowded street or if you are shooting video and want to keep your shutter speed around 1/50 of a second and control your depth of field both lending to a more cinematic look.[himage]02_1-15 sec at f - 2201_25.0 sec at f - 22[/himage]Rollover to see the longer shutter speeds possible with an ND filterThe filter is a glass and aluminum construction, very well made with smooth rotation and the optical quality is excellent. Clear markings on the filter ring indicate the strength of the filter. I have been using the 82mm size for my 24-70 f/2.8 lens. You can stack additional filters with the front threads accepting 86mm filter size - larger to avoid vignette. One downside to the larger size, your lens hoods and lens caps no longer fit. They do offer additional sizes down to 52mm. B&H has the full list of sizes. So this sounds great - one affordable high-quality filter that gives you great versatility in the amount of light you block. There is a drawback and this is true of all variable filters, at certain strengths you can get a very noticeable X pattern in the sky. This makes these filters unusable in some situations.[himage]01_30.0 sec at f - 18I drew the white lines (in case that wasn't clear)[/himage][himage]02_15.0 sec at f - 18I drew the white lines (in case that wasn't clear)[/himage]The alternative is a non-variable ND filter which comes in various strengths. I generally recommend 3 or 6 stop for photographers looking to use in a variety of situations. You can stack ND filters though if you really want the ability to stack you should consider something like the LEE system which has very versatile setups. I have a link below to recommended sizes and strengths and will be talking about the Lee system after my Iceland trip.Recommended 3-stop filters (also labeled ND8 and 0.9)These will allow you to block 3 stops of light i.e 1/250 of a second to 1/30Budget: Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter (link to 77mm, make sure you purchase the correct size for your lenses)Premium: B+W 77mm 0.9 ND 103 FilterRecommended 6-stop filters (also labeled ND64 and 1.8)These will allow you to block 6 stops of light i.e 1/250 of a second to 1/4 of a second.Budget: Hoya 77mm Pro 1 Digital Neutral Density 64x Filter (link to 77mm, make sure you purchase the correct size for your lenses)Premium: B+W 77mm 1.8 ND MRC 106M FilterIf you want seriously long exposures in the middle of the day- the BIG STOPPER 10-stop ND filter is best.B+W 77mm 3.0 ND MRC 110M FilterAnd if you want control without using a variable - the Lee or Hitech filters are the way to go. They offer stacking and provide an easy way adjust graduated ND filters.More about the Lee Filter System at B&H Photo VideoBuy the Genustech Variable ND Filter from B&H Photo VideoScantips has an easy calculator to determine differences in stops.

Don't be a LAZY photographer

Many photographers want ND filters to get those more dreamy looking waterfalls or smooth water beach photos and if you find yourself at your location and you still can’t get long enough shutter speeds to get the look you desired you are probably being lazy and trying to photograph during the middle of the day when you have massive amount of light and the quality of the light is harsh and flat. Don’t be lazy - get up earlier when the light levels are lower and the quality is softer and more directional. Or just stay out till evening. For many years, I photographed loads of longer exposure waterfall photos without an ND filter.Learn more about circular polarizers - sometimes useful as an ND filter too.

New Nikon Lenses- 24-70 f/2.8 VR, 24 f/1.8

Nikon announced several new lenses today -

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens

Screenshot 2015-08-04 13.44.20

  • F Mount Lens/FX Format
  • Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/22
  • ASP/ED, AS, ED, and HRI Elements
  • Nano Crystal & Super Integrated Coating
  • Fluorine Coated Front and Rear Elements
  • Silent Wave Motor AF System
  • Vibration Reduction Image Stabilization
  • Internal Focus, Manual Focus Override
  • Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

The 24-70 range is extremely versatile for wedding, event and general photography. And while 3rd party manufacturers have offered a 24-70 f/2.8 with VR or VC in Tamron's case it hasn't been met with the greatest enthusiasm. Now we have what looks like a fantastic lens from Nikon - the only downsides? Price and Weight.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens

  • F Mount Lens/FX Format
  • Aperture Range: f/5.6 to f/32
  • Three Extra-Low Dispersion Elements
  • Nano Crystal & Super Integrated Coating
  • Silent Wave Motor AF System
  • Vibration Reduction with Sport Mode
  • Internal Focus, Manual Focus Override
  • Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism
  • Detachable, Rotatable Tripod Collar
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

$1,396.95

Fixed f/5.6- I expect this to be very sharp but it weighs more than the Tamron 150-600 f/5-f/6.3 which offers a little more range (at both ends) and is cheaper.  So how much sharper is the big question. We also need to put it up against the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary which is very similar to the Tamron.Preorder from B&H Photo Video. Shipping September 17th

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.8G ED Lens

  • Two ED and Two Aspherical Elements
  • Nano Crystal & Super Integrated Coating
  • Silent Wave Motor AF System
  • Rear Focus System; Manual Focus Override
  • Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm

$746.95

Pay $100 more and get the Sigma f/1.4, it is a fantastic lens with 9 aperture blades vs 7 in the Nikon, not that that makes a big difference but I expect the Sigma is still going to come out on top and offers the faster max aperture.Preorder from B&H Photo Video. Shipping September 17th

How it was Made - Instagram Winner

Last week's Instagram Challenge was "EARTH." One of my winners was this beautiful photo from Sky Neary.http://instagram.com/p/5Ndm6yHRet/Sky reached out to let me know exactly how he captured/created this image-I was on a last minute backpacking trip to Nevada, Utah, and Arizona area with a friend and traveling for a week. This photograph was created on the last day of our trip right outside Las Vegas. This landscape is in Red Rock Canyon National Park.Sky NearyAfter taking the image I edited it in photoshop to turn day into night

Turn photograph from day to night:

First you want to desaturate.  A good starting point is half-way with the desaturate (example -50) and adjust from there.  This example works both in Lightroom and Photoshop.
Next you need to adjust Exposure or Brightness depending on if you are in photoshop or lightroom and you want to bring them down (slide left).  Now you want to slide your contrast far to the right typically all the way for photoshop and lightroom.
Once you adjust exposure/brightness and contrast. You want to double check your colors due to the contrast slider being adjusted you might want to desaturate specific colors more.
Remember every photograph is different so you might want to go back and adjust to improve the overall look of the photograph.

and then blended a Milky Way photograph I took on the same tripBX0A9758 1I ended with this.BX0A9811-Edit-EditI like to think that this is what it looks like if you were here at night.-Sky You can see more of Sky's work at http://www.skynearyphotography.com/Thanks Sky!  Have you made and or captured a photo you are particularly proud of? New Sigma Art Lens is Coming?

Screenshot 2015-07-27 13.03.12We are huge fans of the newish ART series from Sigma - The 18-35 f/1.8, the 35mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.4 (we carry both those primes to every wedding) They also recently released the full frame compatible 24-35 f/2 and although that range isn't very useful for me - reviews report superb sharpness and quality. We now hear from CanonRumors.com that

Sigma will announce at least one more ART series lens in 2015.

Depth-From-Defocus AF TechnologyFor accelerated autofocus performance, DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position to benefit continuous shooting and movie recording modes. This contrast-detection type focus method also benefits subject tracking performance for maintaining sharp focus on moving subjects. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance in dim environments.Assisting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation.Preorder from B&H Photo for $597.99 Body Only - Shipping August 15thScreenshot 2015-07-16 09.18.48 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 Digital CameraPreorder from B&H Photo for $597.99 Body Only - Shipping August 15th

New Canon Flash: Speedlite 430EX III-RT

Canon has announced a new flash, an updated version of their 430EX. The big change? The inclusion of Radio Transmission (RT) for wireless off camera firing.  Previously with flashes other than the expensive 600RT wireless meant optical only which isn't always the most reliable.Shop Canon 430EX III RT from B&H Photo fro $299

More about wireless - Canon and other manufacturers use the term wireless flash to indicate a flash or system that can be triggered or fired without any wires. The Canon T5i, T6i/s and 70D cameras with their built in flash are capable of wirelessly triggering an external flash- this is done by firing the on board flash - an optical trigger, not wireless as we usually think about WiFi and other wireless communication.  I demonstrate how it all works and the setup herehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Jrv0ethxFgDownsides to Optical Wireless control? In sunny conditions it can be un reliable and you do need a pre-flash that in some, albeit rare, circumstances will impact your exposure.   You are also limited in your control of the external flash as the communication is only one way - camera to flash. In 2012 Canon announced the 600RT flashes, these pro level flashes include Radio Transmitters that allow for remote triggering without needing that optical flash - this also provides additional control over remote flashes, in fact you have complete control as if the flash was sitting directly on your camera, if you are using a compatible transmitter or another external flash.   The 430EX RT is now a more budget friendly model of the 600RT with many of the same features. A third option I am testing/reviewing right now is the Yongnuo 600 RT, basically a clone of the Canon 600RT but with a price of just $124 - Learn more at B&H Photo. While I have not finished my complete review I am impressed with the feature set of the Yongnuo and really only see slight differences in build quality that does not affect overall performance.  For my money I would buy the Yongnuo - Full review coming.
