The Super Blood Moon is ComingSept 27-28The Night of September 27-28 will be the best blood moon of the year as its also a super moon. Those on the east coast, south america, and western Europe will have the best chance at seeing the blood moon. This one is a little bit easier to see at 10:51 P.M. EDT unlike my photo here which was at 3 A.M. Remember after you get your Blood moon photos it is a good moment to shoot the stars as well as there is very little light pollution from the moon.To line up your shot before the event I suggest using the program Stellarium, a virtual planetarium for your computer. After you set your location you can get a precise angle where the moon is going to pass through.  (http://www.stellarium.org)Need help shooting the moon? Check out Toby's tips in Super Moon? Tip of the Day - Take Notes

FN02_RULED_paperA good habit to get into today is taking notes, it may seem a bit silly at first but you will be better for it.  While there is that magical 1% that can pull a photo out of nothing with natural talent for the rest of us we need experience and notes to fall back on. Amateurs all the way to pros keep notes because you can’t keep 100% of everything in your head. A small memo book like field notes is great for taking with you on the go and fits conveniently in a camera bag. In conjunction with Evernote, an online notebook, you can keep your digital notes backed up and access them through a phone or tablet. A memo book can keep quick notes, and important info if your phone dies, while Evernote can backup the info and hold notes and photos that wouldn’t translate well to paper. Notes do pay off and just like homework the information will pay off later:FN-02_angle_ruled

As a note if anyone would like to contribute a story feel free to send an email to DPRnews@rm3.me.  ZEISS Milvus – Manual Focus SLR Lenses for ZE- and ZF.2-MountsMilvus-Product-sample-20150904It's the season for new lenses! Zeiss has released a set of new lens series, Milvus, that will be compatible with Nikon and Canon cameras. The first six lenses of this set hit many focal lengths across the board: 21mm F/2.8, 35mm F/2.0, 50mm F/1.4, 50mm F/2.0 Macro, 85mm F/1.4, and 100mm F/2.0 Macro. With Zeiss you get fantastic quality but it’s also a quite expensive proposition, will these current lenses meet the hype? Zeiss’s Milvus lenses will be available starting in October and you can pre-order through B&H today. The Sony a7S II is a Low-Light Monster with a Max ISO of 409,600 and Internal 4KAfter the positive release of the Sony A7R II (Review) they unveiled the A7S II, another beast of a camera. Sporting an expandable 409,600 ISO the camera can almost see in the dark. Between the upgraded sensor and now offering internal 4k video(previous A7s was only able to record 4k to an external device) it’s another notch to Sony’s belt in competition with Canon and Nikon. Available starting October at B&HSony a7S II Has 14-Bit RAW, a7R II and Others to Get It via Free Firmware UpdateAs a bit of a bonus to the above A7S II announcement, the A7R II and A7S II will get 14-bit RAW stills through a free firmware update.  No word on earlier models getting the same update and my question with the A7R II, how much will this slow it down? This is ISO 4,560,000 with Canon’s Crazy New CameraIf the Sony a7s II is the current Low-Light monster this Canon is looking to be the next up. Check out the link above for photos from Canon’s ME20F-SH that boasts over 4.5 million ISO. Canon Is Working on a 600mm DO BR Telephoto Lens With Its Latest Optical TechIt may be awhile before we start seeing it on the shelves, but Canon’s new 600mm DO BR prototype is quite interesting due to its size. Most of Canon's L class lens lineup over 400mm are heavy behemoths and if this is an indication of the future it’s 30% smaller and lighter than its current version. Canon’s 120MP DSLR Two Years Away?Remember Canon’s big announcement last week about a 120MP DSLR? After news outlets started checking with their sources, the current rumor is now pushing for a 2017 release at the earliest. DJI'S Got a Fancy New Interchangeable-Lens Camera For DronesDJI went into the prosumer zone with it’s Inspire 1 drone which is a pricey at $2900. Now DJI has released two micro-four-thirds cameras for high end film and photography . The Zenmuse X5 and X5r, for the Inspire are interchangeable lens cameras claiming to be the world’s smallest lossless 4K cameras. Since they are using standard MFT mounts you can use the kit lens from DJI as well as other brands as well which is a nice feature with how much you're already investing. Starting out they will fully support and control in-flight the DJI MFT 15mm f/1.7 ASPH lens, Panasonic Lumix 15mm G Leica DG Summilux f/1.7 ASPH lens, Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f/2.0 lens, and Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 lens. If the inspire’s standard camera with built-in 4k video wasn’t enough these will be recording in lossless CinemaDNG Raw“Empty” Epson ink cartridges, which cost £2,500 for a set, are still 20 percent fullIt’s been known for awhile that printers are ink hogs and there’s always going to be an angels share of ink, like toothpaste with the little bit that can’t get squeezed out. A printing company in Seattle took the time to check into that angels share for the Epson 9900 printer which retails for $5,000. Turns out for a set of cartridges that angel's share is about 17-22 percent of a cartridge which can add up to a loss of $500 in ink per set. No word from Epson yet but with the negative press we’ll see if that changes. Photographer Loses Pictures from 20+ Shoots After Car Broken IntoJust a general FYI, maybe if you're shooting photos for weddings it may not be the best idea to leave all of the photos in your car. Haleigh Wehr of Carroll, Iowa found that out the hard way when someone broke into her car and stole six memory cars with photos from over 20 shoots.  While backing up during a wedding is not always possible - dual card slots and keeping one set of the memory cards on you until they are backed up is crucial when dealing with weddings and other precious moments.  At home - remember, Backing up is not hard, setup a schedule for yourself to backup at least every other week minimum and preferably in three locations. Money Saving Photography Hacks Using 6 IKEA Productshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuliaTSselkShould Photographers Avoid Shooting at the Same Famous Places? As a certain pair of photographers took a photo of the Effiel tower recently the question becomes do we need a thousand photos of the same tower. A new project called the camera restrica aims to curb that by blocking you from taking photos of certain popular areas. While the camera so far is a bit basic the premise is every time you go to fire the shutter it checks your phone's GPS to decide if the area has been overly photographed. If that happens a red X appears in the viewfinder blocking you from taking any photos. Personally I think it's a bit of a niche product for hipsters but with a release in 2016 it’s coming soon. https://instagram.com/p/7czbLMkXXa/?taken-by=christinabernales

Tip of the Day - Hats are Handy?

cap-1421680Being a photographer also ends up making you part MacGuyver. If you're having issues with light leaking into the lens but don’t have a lens hood you can use a hat. Loosen the hat till it fits over the lens and while it's not the most stylish accessory it will do the job. You can also use it to block light making it easier to see your viewfinder as well which in outdoor situations helps a ton. If you tend to switch lenses a lot put on a bandana and a hat, then you can slide the lens cap under your hat quickly without getting it dirty. Even trying to review a photo you can take a hat off to block some of the light hitting the screen to review exposure more clearly.

Was the laptop on shuffle the entire time? For the wedding the paid photographer had an exclusivity agreement barring other photographers making this a bit of an issue. Just this week in almost an exact mirror to this case a photographer got a six figure payout for the same problem. We’re not talking about a “Uncle Bob” who is a family member that happened to be at the wedding but a paid wedding vendor that knew better. The DJ refused to take the photos down until the family had to step into the conflict. We’ll see what happens when all is said and done but this certainly could be headed towards the same conclusion with a lawsuit. Canon: We’re Building a 120-Megapixel DSLRRemember when the megapixel war was a thing? After Canon’s 50MP 5DS/5DSR models hit 50MP now Canon is trying for a 120MP camera. Tip of the Day - Green Grass is Yellow?

Tryingcolor for green grass in your photos and having issues? In Lightroom use the HSL slider to adjust the yellow hue to the right by 10 for green grass and lower the yellow saturation by the same amount. While it is a starting point you might find you need to adjust the hue more for your preferred level of green. If you have multiple yellow subjects in your photo using a Hue/Saturation layer in photoshop is preferable as you can use a layer mask to select only what you would like to change.

Cleaning your DSLR or Mirrorless Sensor

Disclaimer- Cleaning your sensor isn't risky but does carry risks. If you damage your sensor while cleaning it is not going to be covered by your camera manufacturer's warranty and the only official cleaning method recommended by the camera manufacturers is to send in the camera for cleaning. The information I present in this post and video is based on my own experience, by following, you accept complete liability for any damages that may result.Let’s talk about dirty sensors. It happens, it’s not a big deal.Dirty SensorsDust on the sensor typically doesn’t show up unless you are shooting at smaller apertures. Bigger bits might show up starting around f/8, but it is really above f/14 and up to f/22 where you see the dust. If you are shooting lots of landscapes, this can be an issue. If you are shooting lots of portraits, with apertures below f/5.6 you can stop reading and go back to enjoying life. It is unlikely you will see any dust impact your image.f/22 - can you spot the dust and HAIR!!! Embarrassing. The first step in cleaning is to determine how dirty your sensor is. A quick way to test is to take a picture of a clean white piece of paper at f/8, f/14 and f/22 - don’t worry about your shutter speed - the dust spots will be sharp even if you shoot at slow shutter speeds, but you do want to keep your ISO fairly low to avoid noise confusing the issue. You could also photograph the sky on a clear day.Now pop that image in Lightroom and in the develop module there is a nifty option to Visual Spots located under the Spot removal tool.  Need Lightroom?Screenshot_9_8_15__8_43_AMScreenshot 2015-09-08 08.42.33Rollover the image below to see the before and after Visual Spots with my Sony a7RII sensor at f/22[himage]Dirty SensorDirty Sensor[/himage]If your sensor looks like Sony a7RII sensor does after just a few weeks of use - you probably want to clean it.Many DSLRS and Mirrorless cameras have a sensor cleaning mode - some run every time you turn the camera on or off and some run when selected. This is the first option you should try. With many of the systems, it is recommended to either hold the camera normally or facedown with the lens off so that the dust falls out. The Sony A7RII I have violently vibrates the sensor for a second or two and did absolutely nothing to reduce the amount of dust on the sensor. Hopefully you will have better results. Test again after using the in camera method.CleanSensorGif_animThe next step is to use a rocket blower - NEVER use compressed air or air in a can dust off products. Again hold the camera in such a way that the dust will fall out and give a few puffs directed at different areas of the sensor. They do sell sensor loupes - little magnifiers with led lights that make it easier to judge your progress. I used a tiny LED bike light to help see the sensor but it is clear that a bit of magnification will help too as some of these dust specks are invisible to the naked eye.$17 Sensor Magnification and LED light Sensor Loupe LED Magnification$9.95 Rocket BlowerRocket Blowers are cheap and do a great job of cleaning your sensor.Buy Rocket Blower from Amazon | B&H Photo VideoI was impressed with the results of the rocket blower- it did a good enough job that I would be happy stopping there - but if you want to get your sensor even cleaner you are going to need to touch it with something. Please read and follow all directions carefully for the kit you purchase and consult your camera manual for additional information. You have options - there are the expensive static charged brushes like the Arctic butterfly (see it at B&H) for $130 - you drag a statically charged brush across the sensor and it picks up the dust. In theory this should work fairly well with all but the stickiest particles and you never need to replace any pads etc but your up front cost are quite high. It does have two nice, bright LEDs to see what you are doing.butterflybrushOr you can go with something like the DustAid Platinum DSLR Sensor Cleaner for $26 that provides 6 cleanings - you get these little sticky pads that you gently press on the sensor, the dust sticks to the pad and then you use included “tape” to clean the pad.Dust Aid Platinum - Sticky lollipop for your sensorOr a more traditional kit like this DustAid Dust Wand Kit for $30 - Should provide about 20-40 cleanings depending on your sensor which is what I used in the video. You simply take one of the dust cloths out, wrap it carefully around the wand and apply a few drops of their cleaning solution- The larger your sensor the more drops you apply.Dust Wand Kit ReviewIf you are working with a DSLR you do need to put it into manual cleaning mode which pops the mirror out of the way. The dust aid directions suggest starting in the lower left corner and moving across the sensor. Put a new cloth on and repeat the process from the top left to the right again. Use your light and or loupe to inspect and if necessary wipe again with a clean cloth. Note that the special liquid evaporates fast so you should wipe immediately after applying.I hope this video was helpful. Last Sunday I posted on Facebook this status"1531 vs 840. Guess?"The answer - The number of shots I took with the Sony vs the Canon at last weekend's wedding! That says a lot. Metabones vs Commlite - EF to E mount and EF to MFT Mount adapters

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRgsSepyo4gEF to E mount Metabones and Commlite adapters allow you to use Canon lenses on Sony cameras and the EF to Micro Four Thirds (MFT) allow you to use Canon lenses on MFT cameras like the GH4.  What exactly are The differences between a standard Metabones adapter that costs $399 and the Commlite Adapter that costs just $75?

Screenshot 2015-09-02 09.18.28Metabones Adpater

Screenshot 2015-09-02 09.18.23Commlite Adapter

Adapter Build quality - The metabones feels well made and sounds similar to mounting your lens on the camera with a nice solid lock sound. You have a detachable tripod foot that is tightly secured against the body via two hex bolts.Tripod foot secured- you can also see the wide open button, commlite does not offer. The commlite doesn't feel exactly cheap in the hand but it does feel a little less substantial, the sound is cheaper, tinnier and I have found that with the sony adapter the lens lock pin sticks, so you often need to manually slide it forward or the lens will not lock in place.Lock pin sticks on my EF to E mount adapter. The tripod foot is less secure and becomes annoyingly loose at times and I found it difficult to tighten once the camera is attached to a tripod or tripod plate. The EF to MFT doesn’t have a tripod foot at all and the lens lock pin never seems to stick, always working correctly. One more important point - the Metabones adapters have a micro USB port for firmware updates and in the case of this EF to M43 Speedbooster I have, that allowed me to easily upgrade the firmware and I now have autofocus capabilities when I didn’t before! As far as I know there is no way to upgrade the firmware on the Commlite adapters.Screenshot 2015-09-02 10.32.06Performance - with the Metabones EF to Micro four thirds adapter, performance is very good- I have used this setup with a variety of my canon lenses over the last 8 months and never had a single connection issue or error. With the new firmware update I now have autofocus and it works well albeit slower and less sure of itself compared to native,  MFT lenses.  I can’t say the same about the performance of the Commlite - I have only had it a few days but It fails after just a few seconds with almost all lenses - when it works longer than a few seconds there are AF capabilities but aperture is zeroed out and trying to change aperture or taking a photo causes the connection to fail.Error with the commliteClearly something is not working here and I have reached out to the company. Check back for updates. The EF to E Commlite adapter actually works, and with some lenses Autofocus is just as good as with the Metabones but when you compare the complete list of lenses I tested using the two adapters, the Metabones performs better with a greater number of lenses. My lens testing notesTo be fair both offer a list of compatible lenses so you can check to see if the Commlite or Metabones will work for you but it was apparent that when the same lens is on both lists the Metabones will offer slightly faster and more consistent focusing. The Commlite and any lens combination never outperformed the Metabones but with the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 and the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 as well as a few other Canon lenses I tested, autofocus performance was virtually identical with both adapters.Note about AF performance with the Sony A7R2 - Near the center of the frame, with lenses that are compatible with the adapters, it is VERY fast. Near the edges of the frame the lenses get much more confused and spend time hunting.  This is true even with the best performing lenses of the bunch.  I will have more to say in my full Sony a7R2 Review. Subscribe to my Youtube Channel to be notified.Summary - I love saving money when possible, but it is clear that although expensive, the Metabones offers the best build quality, greatest compatibility and offers additional future proof-ness with upgradeable firmware. I have a hard time recommending the Commlite but if you have just 1 or 2 lenses and they happen to be on Commlites compatibility list or you don’t mind manual focus for your work, you can save several hundred dollars. This is my fulltime job and I need your support. Tamron has announced a pair of full-frame f/1.8 primes

Tamron has announced a pair of full-frame f/1.8 primes that will be part of a redesigned SP series. The SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD and SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD are both full-frame-compatible lenses offering image stabilization (VC), fast maximum apertures, good close focusing distances AND, according to Tamron, high quality optics. The design team at Tamron has clearly been watching Sigma - the  look of these lenses is very similar to the ART line at Sigma and that's a good thing.  They do add a moderate amount of weather sealing not offered in the ART line from Sigma. The Canon and Nikon mounts also offer image stabilization - not often seen in primes this fast.SP stands for superior performance. Tamron 35mm f/1.8 VCTamron 45mm f/1.8 VCPrice will be $599 each and available at the end of September. (Sony mount* available later this year) This sounds reasonable for lenses of this caliber and speed with VC.   A few more specs worth detailing more-The close focusing capabilities are impressive. The 45mm can focus as close as 11.42" (.29m) and the 35mm can focus as close as 7.87" (.20m). That close with that wide an aperture will give you VERY shallow depth of field.9 aperture blades should provide smooth bokeh (the more blades the smoother the out of focus circles. The Old nifty-fifty had just 5 blades and you could often see pentagonal shapes of bokeh)Lens hood included! They are calling these lenses weather resistant.  I will mention that Tamron has one of the best warranties in the bsiness with 6 years for US buyers and quick repair turn around time.Preorder at B&H Photo Video45mm f/1.8 for Canon $599 | Nikon $599 | Sony A $59935mm f/1.8 for Canon $599 | Nikon $599 | Sony A $599

Announced Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM Lens

Canon has announced an updated version of their 35mm f/1.4 L prime lens.  The original, released in 1998, was not up to current standards and did not make the list of recommended lenses for Canon's latest high MP DSLRs the 5DS and 5DSr.   The new version looks sharp and offers new, Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element to refract the shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum (blue light) in order to significantly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing.35mm lens blackPriced at $1799 - Available in early October. Pre-Order now from B&H Photo | AmazonI am curious how it will compare to the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens that sells for just $899. We love our Sigma lenses and found the Sigma 35(compared to the original Canon 35mm) and Sigma 50 to be sharper than their Canon counterparts. Watch my comparison of 50mm lenses.  You do get weather sealing with the Canon L lenses, not with Sigma and I expect this fancy new Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics will control CA well but honestly I don't find the Sigma to suffer much.   Which would you pick and why?Canon vs Sigma battle 35mmSigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens vs Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM Lens - Leave a comment below with your pick.  And don't forget APS- shooters, you have the very nice Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 as an option. Canon EOS M3 - Stales Snacks for USA

On last night's Photo Mish Mash, our weekly show, I touched on the rumor that Canon was going to focus on mirrorless offerings in 2016.  I was skeptical. Well it looks like they have taken the first steps in that direction and are releasing the EOS M3 in the US.  It has already been available for several months outside the US.Canon EOS M3 Canon EOS M3The EOS M3 uses the same 24MP APS-C  sensor and Hybrid CMOS III AF system as the  Rebel T6s/ T6i, and features a control dial, an articulating rear screen capable of flipping up for selfies and a flash hot shoe. You need an adapter to use with EF and EF-S lenses though the adapter is certainly affordable at $49.   If you want to stay within the Canon ecosystem, and many photographers do, the EOS M3 provides a decent solution but at $679 body only, $799 with 18-55 EF-M lens - it is priced higher than the comparable Sony a6000. Autofocus is the big question. The Hybrid CMOS II AF system I have in my T6s is decent but noticeably slower than the a6000, especially at tracking- more hands-on coming soon. Subscribe to my Youtube channel to be notified of the full review.Preorder from B&H Photo | Amazon (Shipping in early October)I love the Gizmodo headline "Canon's EOS M3 Is Its Latest Shrug of a Shot at Mirrorless in the US" Emphasis mine.Canon feels late to the party and they are bringing the snacks few people want. Let's hope this is a bridge move and the M4 will really bring a competitive mirrorless model from Canon though they have had THREE versions now where they failed. . . so why should 4 be any different? I also don't believe we will see a EOS M4 until late next year at the earliest, falling further behind in this growing market.Current EOS M lenses
