Sony A7R II - Serious Mirrorless Camera

Sony A7r III am a fan of the Sony A7 series. My most recent review of the Sony a7 Mark II and last year I reviewed the 36MP Sony a7R. Sony has now announced the successor - the a7R II with some serious upgrades that challenge all full frame cameras, including DSLRS currently on the market.Sony a7R II Specs:

  • 42 MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor (BSI means Back Side Illuminated which means better low light performance)
  • ISO expandable to 102,400
  • BIONZ X Image Processor
  • Internal UHD 4K Video & S-Log2 Gamma - 4K video with professional codec and profiles
  • 5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization- Stabilization in body like the Sony a7 Mark II
  • 399 Phase-Detect AF Points & 5 fps Burst - Focusing system is 40% improved over Sony a7R which was rather slow)
  • 0.5" 2.36M-Dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF -world's highest viewfinder magnification at 0.78x
  • 3.0" 1,228.8k-Dot Tilting LCD Monitor
  • Silent Shutter Mode
  • Durable Reduced-Vibration Shutter Design
  • Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC

Sony has seriously packed in the features in this camera, providing a much more well rounded offering that can handle anything. The original a7r felt like a landscape camera only with it's slow operation and didn't provide great video options. Now we have significantly faster focusing system and the ability to shoot 29minutes of 4K!  And a full frame BSI sensor - this is going to provide some excellent low light performance. Honestly I am a bit stunned by everything they have packed in here and putting this camera side by side with current Canon cameras like the 5D Mark III, the 5Ds and 5Dsr and the rumored specs of the Canon 5D Mark IV. . . it is not pretty- No 4K, I doubt drastic improvements in low light performance. Sure the 5DS series offers great megapixels but low light performance and dynamic range are about the same as the 5D Mark III and when I did my testing versus the A7r last year the low light performance and the Dynamic range of the Sony a7r was significantly better.   Usually the response to battles of Sony vs Canon is Canon has the lenses but again that is changing as I look around our office at the Sigma lenses we use at each wedding and the fact that Sony has made huge improvements on focusing with adapters - in fact they have demoed using Canon glass with a metabones adapter and focus is significantly improved. The Sony a7R II will be available for Preorder in June and shipping in August.   Check it out on B&H Photo Video Price: $3,198.00For reference the Canon 5D Mark III was $3,499 when first release and the Canon 5Ds and 5Dsr are $3,699 and $3,899.  You can buy a nice lens for $700 dollars and as it looks right now- get a better all around camera for most people's needs. Sony Videoshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Jor_WkheaE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FZW09bD0m4

Steadsnap Universal Tripod Plate Adapter

Steadsnap Universal Tripod Plate AdapterYou may remember I’m the one that did a bit of DIY by taking an angle grinder to my camera gear. I did get a Black Rapid Sport (Amazon | B&H) strap to work well with my tripod’s quick release plate but if you don’t have the tools to grind metal the project could be a bit difficult. As I’m not the only one with this problem Steadsnap created an adapter that slips between the tripod quick release plate and your camera for a spot to hook your strap. The major improvement in this method is that you still can use a tripod without completely having to remove the shoulder strap from the camera.Steadsnap Adapter SetupThe plate is milled out of aluminum and features a steel tripod bolt so it’s not going anywhere and can take up to 44 pounds of gear. Unlike my setup it's universal so if you switched to a MeFoto tripod for example there is no additional work altering its quick release plate. Unfortunately as these are small batch orders the drawback is that the Steadsnap adapter costs $35. Compared to the BlackRapid FastenR-T1 that I used, which retails for $17.95, its the pricier option but an easy solution. As for use the adapter held up fine in review, I covered about 20 miles hiking while testing the plate and had no major issues. Since the mounting point is on the side versus the bottom smaller lenses work better with this setup as larger lenses such as the Canon 55-250mm telephoto lens tended to bump into my leg while walking. I do wish the attachment points were larger, being low profile there is a limit to how big the holes could be but I found that if you didn’t detach it exactly right the tip of the Black Rapid’s carabiner would catch. Since the attachment point to the camera is now on the side taller users get a bit of a bonus using a black rapid strap it gives a couple more inches of material to get low profile shots. Now as for safety you are adding an additional failure point to an expensive camera hanging on a thread. The steel tripod bolt the Steadsnap uses fit quite well and I never had any of the connection points loosen. If you're paranoid of having a camera fall off the connection, or just want a backup, an Op/Tech strap can still fit securely between the carabiner and the DSLR’s body mounts. So would I buy it? Yes & No. Since my current DIY setup works for half the price on a Dolica tripod my method works fine in my case. Now if I ever upgrade to a mefoto tripod having a low profile connector would work quite well and for $35 it isn't the most expensive adapter for sale at the moment. If your looking for a simple setup for your shoulder strap and like the option of not having to detach everything to use your tripod the Steadsnap adapter would be a good solution. https://vimeo.com/105384625Steadsnap Universal Tripod Plate Adapter, available now at B&H for $34.99

Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM Review

Want to WIN the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens? Just a few days left to enter. Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM vs the 50mm f/1.8 II, the 50mm f/1.4 USM and the 24 and 40mm f/2.8 STM lenses.https://youtu.be/w5EoXor3x44The new model is offered at the same price as the 50mm f/1.8 II with some important updates- metal mount, 7 aperture blades vs 5 in the older model, much smoother and quieter focus. Overall build quality feels significantly improved with the metal mount and tighter more finished looking construction. The f/1.8 II didn’t always produce the smoothest bokeh, at times it was possible to see the pentagon shape in the background created by the 5 aperture blades.   The new 7 bladed design does eliminate the pentagons and produces slightly smoother bokeh but the difference is slight.5 blades vs 7 blades apertureThe f1/.8 II version was notoriously loud in focusing and this became even more apparent when using it in live view with the Canon cameras offering continuous AF in live view. The new model offers STM technology which provides smoother, faster and MUCH quieter focusing. It is not silent like the STM kit lenses, it does still makes an audible sound that will be recorded by the on camera mic in quieter environments which is similar in performance to the 24 and 40mm STM primes.https://instagram.com/p/2_2uCENMOa/?taken-by=photorectobyClose focusing distance has been improved slightly which is a nice but again the difference is slight and still not as close as the 24 and 40.[unitegallery CloseFocusing50stm2]Image Quality remains about the same - at times the new STM version looks to be a tiny bit sharper, especially as you stop down from f/1.8 but if you have the original and you are only looking to get sharper images - I do not recommend upgrading to the new lens.

Canon SL2 (150D) Rumors, Near-future of mobile editing, & 4k Prints

Quick roundup of news coupled with my musings …

Canon EOS 150D / EOS SL2 / Kiss X8 Rumors

Northlight images is reporting that the SL2 will be announced sometime in August. This is a followup to the quietly successful SL1, Canon's smallest DSLR.   The SL2 is being described as a little 750D (t6i) without the articulating screen.Canon SL2 Rumored Specs

  • 24.2MP
  • 19 point AF
  • 4.5 fps
  • 1080/30p video
  • Hybrid CMOS AF III focus system
  • Fixed 3" LCD touchscreen
  • Wi-Fi + NFC

This is why I believe Canon moved the 750D/760D to a slightly larger size- they want to differentiate that line from the SL2 line coming in a few months.  Giving people a choice within the Rebel line. Nikon has just elected to take their D5X00 series smaller.   If they can get the rear dial like the new Canon 760D T6s on the Sl2 I would be VERY compelling to many Canon photographers already owning lenses and craving that smaller, mirrorless like approach.   Previous rumors have mentioned Canon switching to an EVF in the SL2 (This was also a rumor for the Canon 750D/760D series and it turned out to be false, I believe it won't happen in the SL2 either).SL1 is current $499 with 18-55 STM. Future of Mobile Editing

Adobe has announced that they will pull Photoshop Touch from the app stores on May 28th.  The other apps Adobe has released in the last few months have superseded the features in the now outdated touch.  And along with this announcement Adobe has released a look at mobile photo editing coming later this year.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLhftwa2-y4

The Future of Photography - 4k Video?

Christina and I have discussed the future of photography multiple times on our weekly mish mash show including the recent episode 58. I propose that we will in the not so distant future shoot video (basically shooting a burst of images that happens to be so fast it is virtually video) and then you pull a still or stills from the video.   I am not the only one that thinks that way, it's pretty clear from the recent Panasonic G7 release that Panasonic has a similar idea. Their new G7 offers two 4K photo modes - ways to extract stills from video.  I already own the GH4 and recently accompanied Christina on an engagement shoot. I was recording video with the GH4 and pulled out some of the best moments as stills and sent the files off to AdoramaPix (saved 20% too). Just got the prints back and I am pleased with the results.Prints from Video - The future is fast arriving

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 Announced with 4k video

Panasonic has announced the next version of the G series, think of this as the little brother of the excellent GH4 series. What you need to know: The Lumix DMC-G7 is a mirrorless camera in the shape of a small DSLR with an articulating touchscreen, Using a micro 4/3 sensor and offering 4K video recording with some neat 4k PHOTO modes (more about that below). Panasonic's cameras use the standard micro 4/3 mount giving them access to a huge selection of lenses from Panasonic, Olympus (who also makes lenses for the mount) and a large selection of 3rd party lenses. The micro 4/3 sensor allows for small and light lenses, an advantage over many of the APS-C mirrorless cameras and DSLRs.G7 Specs:

  • Micro Four Thirds System
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Viewfinder
  • 3.0" 1.04m-Dot Free-Angle Touchscreen

Panasonic GX7Panasonic GX7 Panasonic GX7 Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-G7_Mirrorless_Micro_Four_Thirds_DMC-G7KS_B_HG7 Now offers two 4K photo modes:  "Pre-Burst" in which one second of video is buffered and captured before and after the shutter button is pressed - and '4K Burst' which simply captures 4K video for as long as you press down the shutter button, to a maximum duration of 29 minutes and 59 seconds. What is 4K Photo? Using this mode allows you to pull 8MB still images out of a video file- You can do this in camera or on your computer.   I do this occasionally with the GH4 and I am always impressed with the quality - You can easily print at this size and of course web sharing these images look gorgeous. Sample files selected from recent videos below.  There are downsides - you need to spend time scrolling through footage for the still shot you want and that footage quickly takes up lots of space BUT you can also think of it as capturing at 24fps - much faster burst rate than is offered on most cameras.[unitegallery gallery1]

Fujifilm X-T10 Mirrorless Announced

Fuji has announced a smaller, cheaper version of their much loved X-T1.Why is the X-T1 much loved?  An excellent sensor, nice manual controls with a good ecosystem of lenses, including two well performing kit lenses 18-55 and 18-135 all wrapped up in a retro styled weather sealed body offering an amazing viewfinder. What you need to know: The Fuji X-T10 offers the same sensor (APS-C) and many of the same features as the X-T1 in a body that is smaller, lighter, cheaper. Part of the savings comes from a cheaper kit lens, though you can buy the X-T10 with more expensive 18-55 that comes with the X-T1 now.

  • 16.3 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II Sensor (same sensor as X-T1)
  • EXR Processor II (same processor as X-T1)

You give up the weather sealing, a slightly larger viewfinder, compatibility with the battery grip but you get an excellent sensor in a well built camera that belongs to a solid ecosystem of excellent lenses and offers the updated AF system that brings it on par with the Sony a6000. The Sony a6000 remains my pick for all around mirrorless camera but photographers that crave a better viewfinder and more manual control this is a better option and provides a little more room to grow as a photographer with additional fast lenses that Sony doesn't have in their line up. Watch my Review/Interview with Photographer Nathan Smith on his X-T1https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF09VBxakIk
