Simple tips and tricks for getting the best milky way photos - from when to go, where to go and what gear to use.
March to October is good but the best times to see the galactic core is late April to late July here in the Northern Hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere February to October with the galactic core best visible during June and July - The galactic core is arguably the most interesting and most photogenic section of the milky - So take a moment and add a calendar reminder to watch this video again in the spring. You also want nights with no moon - this means a new moon or dates when the moon is below the horizon - a quick search online yields lots of helpful info. On iOS and Android, I love Photopills it has at a glance moon info as well as rise/set times for the Galactic core for your location AND a mode that lets you overlay the night sky & milky way on the landscape where you are standing!
Someplace with low amounts of light pollution - to figure out the closest dark skies visit website Dark site Finder - Yellow is eh, Green is ok, blue is good, black is even better. But don’t let this stop you from trying - Your milky way shots might not be the best but at least get out, practice and develop the skills so when you end up at the right time and place you can get THE SHOT.DO include interesting foreground elements - rocks, trees, mountains, something to ground your viewer on earth while giving them a taste of the stars above.
You need a sturdy tripod - I have my favorites listed below. As for lens choice. Full Frame equivalents of 14 to 30 work well for me. The IRIX firefly is my current budget favorite - I have a review of several lenses perfect for astrophotography linked below. You could go fisheye or shoot a panorama if you have a full view of the sky with little light pollution.
Get manual focus during the day and then tape or lock your focus ring at that point.
Aperture - Use the widest your lens allows - f/2.8 is great wider is even better Kit lenses at f/3.5 are a possibility too.
Shutter speed - Probably about 20 seconds but follow the 500 rule and keep that shutter speed as short as possible so stars are pinpoints and not streaks. Taking multiple shots and stacking for lower noise higher detail is an option too - I haven’t done that yet - I have been happy with single shots.
ISO You are probably going to end up around 1600 - lower if you have a faster lens than f/2.8 - higher if you have a slower lens.
Post Processing I typically cool the image - brighten overall image but especially the stars by increasing the highlights and I use a brush to increase the brightness of the milky way and a second brush to decrease the brightness of the darker sections - overall increasing contrast and making the milky way stand out more.
Good Morning Vietnam! With the 12hr difference between Michigan and Vietnam Toby's just waking up for another day on tour with McKaylive. This week there's a new DJI drone, a Photoshop update, black and white challenge top picks, and more. While Toby does the Live Show via PEN when not on tour, this is your quick peek at what we're doing behind the scenes, this week's news, our Instagram challenge top picks, and more. DJI Mavic Air Announced - If you want to buy a drone this is the one. While a bit more expensive than the spark it's smaller and has all the features both Toby and I wanted. You get 12MP Stills and 4K video in a footprint not terribly bigger than a cell phone making it super easy to carry around. Now if I could only get Toby to buy me one?We can't cover everything photography news related but we try. For everything else, we've got the best news articles from around the web.Select Subject is Here: Photoshop Now Has AI-Powered One-Click Selections
A new update to Photoshop this week with 19.1 and the release of subject selection. Going to select>subject lets Photoshop attempt to select the subject automatically using Adobe Sensei. So far in real-world use, it's not perfect but gives you a start at a layer mask. Like always it will likely be improved in future Adobe updates. Also included in this week's update:
Canon Sends Invitation to Dealers for Major Mirrorless Presentation Next MonthVia Canon Rumors so take this with a grain of salt, but it looks like Canon may be announcing a new mirrorless product to dealers and VIPs. They are keeping the entire thing very hushed but hopefully, it's a sign something is coming down the line.Preset Brewery Lets You Use Lightroom Presets in Photoshophttps://youtu.be/91mhvuIxHeQAt least for those with a Mac, Preset Brewery is a neat little program out this week that will convert a Lightroom preset into one that works in Photoshop. This gives those that want it a way to use a Lightroom preset they like in Photoshop without having to manually set all the sliders again. At the moment it only works one preset at a time for conversion but an update is coming soon. If that sounds good you can buy it now at Preset Brewery for $7.90.LibRaw, Creators of FastRawViewer, Release SonyPixelShift2DNG BetaOne of Toby's issues with the new Sony a7RIII was how it handles the new pixel shift photos. Requiring Sony software for all the work. Now thanks to LibRaw pixel shift photos can easily be converted, in batch, to Adobe DNG for easy editing in Lightroom or Photoshop. In terms of workflow, this should save a fair bit of time, if you have the new a7RIII try it out at https://www.fastrawviewer.com/SonyPixelShift2DNG.Other Stories You Might Like:
For this week's challenge, black and white let you really focus on a subject while having the option for a lot of leeway for edits. Great job this week with some amazing photos, black and white allows for a lot of variety so it's nice to see some experimenting.Next Week's Challenge: #PRTV_cultureTo go along with Toby's tour in Vietnam and Cambodia next week's challenge is culture. No, that doesn't mean you have to go travel. Capture something unique to your area that's a part of your town. For in Michigan here the one I always forget is most people don't know a Michigan Coney, a type of diner, or how we use our hands as a map (Michigan is mitten-shaped). Not to mention just north of me is a little Bavaria and year-round Christmas town. So try shooting food, people, buildings, something people recognize from your area. You might get a shot of something you otherwise wouldn't have thought of before!
Great contrast in this shot and the little guy in the frame really makes this one.
Black and White shots are amazing at pushing contrasts, the darker scarf and background works well to frame your subject.
A white foreground leading up to that black rock really makes for a great shot!
Love this composition, it's so simple and effective. I love the texture that the fog adds, too.
Fantastic composition, I think that the black and white treatment adds a lot to the image.
Great use of black and white with the high contrast between the left and right sides.

DJI Mavic Air Gimbal
DJI Mavic Air Active Track
DJI Mavic Air Remote
Essentially, the new DJI Air is a fix for every single issue we had with the DJI Spark. We get 4K video at 30fps and RAW stills in the smallest package yet. With foldable rotors like the Mavic Pro, it crunches down to half the size of a Mavic Pro and weighs 40% less. Even including 8GB of internal storage if you happen to forget your Micro SD card or just need a little bit more room. Sitting between the Mavic Pro and Spark if you haven't picked up a drone yet this might be the one you've been waiting for all this time. The Mavic Air uses a new 1/2.3" CMOS Sensor with a 24mm (35mm equivalent) F/2.8 lens that's stabilized with a recessed 3-axis gimbal. Capturing 12 MP stills or Stabilized 4K Video at 30fps and Full HD at 120fps. Including a new 32MP spherical panorama mode generated on camera and HDR mode. It's smarter with Flight Autonomy 2.0 using 7 cameras to sense and avoid objects. That means it's better sensing the environment and a safer return to home. Using Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS), with obstacles in the way, the DJI Air will automatically fly around objects to keep moving. A big upgrade from previous models which would just stop when encountering an object.Same intelligent smart modes as the DJI Spark. Active Track and Quick Shot have new updates and improvements. The hand controls like the DJI Spark uses are included, but now with much more responsive and accurate controls. A new asteroid quick shot mode starts with a spherical panorama that falls down towards the subject. Also a new boomerang quick shot is great for sweeping around a subject for a big reveal (like a boomerang). With a 21 minute flight time, it puts the Mavic Air dead between the Spark and Mavic Pro (16 and 27 minutes for those). That said while it might burn the battery faster the 42.5 MPH sport mode will be more than a bit of fun if you don't crash it. It can operate in 22mph winds, and a flight ceiling of 16,404, so the Mavic Air is certainly up for anything. DJI has even redesigned the remote with a 2.5 mile range, removable antennas, and still foldable to pack up small (262 ft range with a smartphone).Overall this fixes pretty much every issue we had with the spark being more of a consumer drone, lacking things like RAW stills and 4K video. At $799 for the standard package and $999 for the Fly More Package it sits right in the middle. We'll have a review from Toby coming up soon so keep an eye out! This is that sweet spot for ultra portability vs features, so small you can put it in your pocket, but still has what you need to get the job done.

Weather Underground
You are carrying a mini computer with you all the time, why not put it to use? Check out some of our favorite smartphone apps to get your photography going.
I like weather undergrounds info and display and they let you set up smart forecasts that can quickly give you an idea of optimal times for various activities including astrophotography.
WU Storm
Along with weather underground, I use STORM for real-time radar that can be helpful to know exactly when that rain is going to stop at your location. I find watching the radar and the movement of the precip is more accurate in the short term than any forecasts.
NOAA Weather International
AND I sometimes want to know what the weather nerds are saying about the future and the NOAA app gives me a straightforward look at each day and provides an easy click to read the forecast discussion. You can also click to see the elevation of a location on the map. FREE or pay $2.99 to remove the adds.
Tide Charts Near Me
I live near the coast and we regularly run workshops on both coasts - knowing the tide is critical to knowing how much beach or rock will be exposed and if the tide is headed out giving you plenty of time to shoot or the tide is coming in when you need to be very careful about getting stranded, Tides- Charts near me is a simple representation of the tides near you - with automatic updating based on your location. FREE or $1.99 to remove the ads.
Photopills
This is huge and I was pretty happy when they offered an Android app - First I love the widget - at a glance I know sunrise, sunset, moonrise and even the status of the galactic core for my location! Once you dive into the app your find tons of useful info from the planner to the AR that helps you line up for sunsets, sunrises and star trails. Additional calculators further help your planning- tons of useful info and well worth the $10 - you can find most of these items in other apps for free but I haven’t found any that bring them all together in one app.
Squarespace
The square space app makes it really easy to update your site with posts, photos and even video - The one way to get people to come back to your site again and again and that is to update the content and offer information behind the photos - Squarespace makes it incredibly easy to build a beautiful website and blog and the app makes it really easy to update on the go. Additional apps from Squarespace allow you to track your analytics, keep notes, update your store and more.
It’s fine to put your best work on Instagram but you should have a website where you control everything and display your work professional in a big beautiful way and Squarespace makes it easy to do that - with beautiful custom templates and 24/7 support along with easy custom domains- Get your own website today at
and save 10% off your purchase.
Snapseed
Still my favorite editor for quick edits of photos captured with the phone or transferred via wifi
Lightroom CC
If you are smart about syncing Lightroom mobile can be powerful and recent upgrades have seriously improved the capabilities and stability of the app - almost making it my pick over Snapseed for editing... but go watch my Snapseed secrets it is just so quick and powerful once you know a few tricks. Sound good?
I continue to love
for an easy way to get images and captions to your phone - I hate writing captions and hashtags on my mobile device and recent updates to the paid plan give you the best times to post and suggest hashtags making new posts easy.
Miops
I talked about this on my recent Yosemite trip - with a small dongle you can trigger your camera in several different ways - really useful - I will be posting a separate video about this system soon.
TrackR
This little Bluetooth tracker lets me ping my camera bag and set an alert if it moves outside of Bluetooth range - I have only started using this - certainly not a full proof way to protect your camera bag but at least gives me a little more piece of mind.

Some post review thoughts. The Sony a7RIII got reviewed a bit ago, but since then it's been on trips around the world with Toby. Currently, in Vietnam, his takes a ton of use over the course of the tours with McKay Live meaning a ton of real-world use lately. So we've got the good, the bad, and the ugly of the new Sony everyone is hot to pick up.

Toby says Hi from Vietnam! He's currently out on a McKay Live tour but we've still got the Week's photo news and more. Canon and Nikon are still eyeing that Full-Frame mirrorless market, both with stories out this week. Then it looks like Facebook wants to kill off more views on your photography page. While Toby does the Live Show via PEN when not on tour, this is your quick peek at what we're doing behind the scenes, this week's news, our Instagram challenge top picks, and more. Join the Photo Enthusiast Network and watch Toby live when he gets back, you can find out more at Photorec.tv/pen.Quick Tip! As a reminder, with this cold weather try to bag your cameras before taking them inside, this helps protect it from moisture condensation.
We can't cover everything photography news related but we try. For everything else, we've got the best news articles from around the web.Canon Asking Its Pros What They Want in a Pro Mirrorless CameraVia Petapixel and Camera Rumors, the word is out that Canon is surveying professionals on the must-have features for a Full Frame Mirrorless. As they've admitted to being behind it's nice to see them taking input on a new product. While both have attempts into this market neither have taken off like Sony's line of products, something Toby has switched over to for a while with his new a7R III. With the myth of a Canon Full Frame for years, hopefully, this is a sign that they might be giving it another shot considering where they stand currently.Nikon’s Full Frame Mirrorless to Have New Z-Mount: ReportWhile it looks like Canon may be starting from step one again Nikon may be developing a new Z-mount for full frame mirrorless. While keeping the traditional Nikon F-mount would be nice it's just a lot of empty space on a mirrorless body. So if a Nikon Mirrorless takes off we might see the change of a tradition. The Nikon 1 tried something similar and lost, but there's still hope for some Sony Competition.Your Facebook Business Page Is About to Get a Lot Less TrafficWhether you think it's another money grab like some, or an attempt to fix the feed, Facebook is going to be putting more focus on people and less on pages. They've already tested an explore feature pushing pages off the main feed although this might be more of a tweak on what shows up. Either way, that means even fewer eyes on your Facebook page posts. Considering we're already getting about 1/10 in views to people liking the page this might be a large push for you to explore other options, especially if you're going pro.New DJI drone teaserComing on the 23rd we might be seeing a new drone in-between the Mavic Pro and DJI Spark.https://youtu.be/W8JWknlPPQQOther Stories You Might Like:

This is a really great opportunity to focus on shapes this week or really simplify an otherwise busy shot of color.
Nice job playing with the light in this one, it's a nice gradient falling through the photo.
Drinks need more love in these challenges. I like the colorful elements set to the side that help balance the composition.
I think I would have liked it shot a bit closer personally but you did a great job at setting a scene.
Fantastic composition, love the black on black and the lighting.
Such a great choice of focus and the composition is really nice.

Time Lapse Tips:
Full Manual Settings
Manual focus
A 2-3 second gap between shots
Playback at 24fps means 24 shots will equal 1 second of video.
Most viewers only want to see a single scene for 10-15 seconds
Make sure camera is VERY stable. If on soft ground/snow/ sand it is possible that the camera will drift a little during the timelapse and that will be visible in playback.
First, this is designed for video, the S in GH5S stands for sensitive in low light. The GH5S looks almost identical to the GH5 on the outside, just a red shutter button, red ring on the mode dial and the S in the model name. It is on the inside that we see camera completely designed for video with low light demands. Primarily targeted at an event, wedding, and other videographers shooting in low light.GH5 provides a 21MP sensor, the GH5S is just 10! What kind of upgrade is that? When shooting video we're not using the full resolution of the sensor, all those extra pixels are wasted, dropping the megapixels of the sensor to 10, similar to Sony's approach with the a7S series at 12MP, allows for larger pixels. Larger pixels do better in low light.Key Benefits of the GH5S:
10MP low light sensor
14-bit raw stills
Key Differences Compared to the GH5
10MP vs 20MP - Better in low light, less room for cropping
No IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization)
I love my GH5 - it is a fantastically easy camera to shoot video with and takes beautiful still images too. I talk more about my favorite features of the GH5 in this video. The IBIS stabilization paired with a stabilized lens gives you very smooth handheld footage. With the removal of IBIS in the GH5S (They assume you will use a gimbal) I can really only recommend this GH5S as an upgrade for those primarily shooting in lower light. For general videographers and travel photographers/videographers the GH5 is still my pick. And don't forget about the little G85 - for less than $1,000 this is one of the best travel photo/video systems out there. My Full Review of the G85What does this mean for the GH6? Where will Panasonic go with the GH6 and will there be a GH6S? I don't know, but it's something I'd like to find out now that they've split these two models.Final Thoughts. I Love the GH5 as a video-based camera that can take very good still images. I have no desire to pick up the GH5S as overall, for me, the IBIS is too big of a loss and I'm shooting in all sorts of light. If I was doing more weddings though, this would be perfect for the low light situations you'd be running into shooting.

Sony has announced a major firmware update for the Sony A9 - More about the functions and enhancements, as well as the link to download the update, can be found below along with some quick thoughts about what this might mean for Sony a7RIII users.
Enhanced performance of continuous autofocus on moving subjectsEnhanced stability of the AF-C when zooming
Adds the function to assign Protecting images to custom KeyAdds the function to transfer (FTP) protected files at onceNote: Only for images protected using version 2.00 or higher.Displays wired LAN MAC addressInputs IPTC metadata to filesNote: IPTC information must be created beforehand using the IPTC Metadata Preset software.Inputs camera serial number to metadata
Improves operational stabilityImproves accuracy of the overheating warning functionUpdate: https://alphauniverse.com/stories/sony-announces-a9-firmware-update-2-00/
I hope we will see some of these benefits in a future FW update too. The a9 and a7RIII share many similarities including FTP transfer and similar AF systems. So far I have been extremely happy with the AF but additional improvements are always welcome. I have tested the FTP transfer and while it is cumbersome and actual transfer can be slow it is possible to set up a home FTP network or connect to one through a wifi hotspot and upload a few photos as a backup. FTP allows for full RAW transfer. With the Wifi, you are limited to jpegs. Being able to one-click mark images for transfer would be a huge time saver.Let me know of any questions. Thanks!

Toby will be heading off to Vietnam soon on a McKay tour but before that, we've still got a Mish Mash to do. This week in the news we've got a big announcement from Panasonic and maybe Canon realizes it's time to catch up... finally. Lots of news and more this week with CES coming after a slow time during the Holidays. For those following the live show Toby's going to cover what he'll be taking to Vietnam and he's going rather light. While Toby does the Live Show via PEN this is your quick peek at what we're doing behind the scenes, this week's news, our Instagram challenge top picks, and more. For everything else, we've got the best news articles from around the web.Panasonic GH5S: The Most Sensitive Camera in Lumix HistoryWe'll have Toby's thoughts in an article soon but the big catch this week is the new GH5S. Check it out at Petapixel, Preorders on the GH5S are live, and it's a great option for those doing video.Canon: We’re Lagging in InnovationShort Version? Canon finally admitted that their technology is falling behind. That said, it's an opportunity. After the rather held back 6DMII this is their chance for a bit of transparency. For us Canon users we're missing 4K on most lower models as a start. Not to mention mirrorless or in-body image stabilization. It might be a bit challenging seeing where Canon is going to be in five years as they keep holding back. But Sony has already eclipsed Nikon and is closing the gap. Will this be the push to right the ship?Really Right Stuff Ball Heads
If you are looking at getting a tripod something you may not think about as much is the ball head, the main part of your tripod that your camera rotates and rests on. As for tripods we suggest picking up the MeFoto Globetrotter Classic or Globetrotter Classic Carbon Fiber (not the Air for better stability), but down the line, we also suggest upgrading the head. Over time tripod's will wear down, especially over heavy use like Toby puts them through. That allows the head to slip, making shooting a bit tricky as the camera might tilt down or to the side a bit. So over time picking up one of these extends the life of your tripod and gives it better performance as well. In this case, the BH-30 is great for a more compact setup while the BH-55 works more for a better platform but at a higher cost.Other Stories You Might Like:

This is a great example of controlling your bokeh. Using the pool balls as context we can still tell someone is lining up for a shot but the focus is all on the 9 ball.

While the Polaroid Zip offers customizability it can be a bit much getting it going, sometimes you just want the shot (or you hate all that technology). That's where the Instax cameras come in as our top choice for instant cameras and a great present for kids as well. Snap the shot and out it comes a 2.4 x 1.8" print just like the Polaroid's of the past. All while being small enough to throw in a pocket or your bag.FYI: With the Mini 70 you will need to pick up a few more CR2 Batteries from Amazon, otherwise, the Mini 90 comes with a rechargeable battery.

The Inrigo waterproof bag is a neat design new to Kickstarter, or at least a dry one. While moisture damage is a bit rarer here in Michigan, traveling to humid countries or shooting around water can cause significant issues to your gear. The Inrigo is that extra bit of insurance and peace of mind you might want to keep things safe and dry. Designed to be a drybox on the go the airtight Inrigo is IP78 waterproof rated so your gear stays dry while in water up to a meter deep. With its airtight seal, the bag even has the option to inflate to provide a bit more protection for bumps and the ability to float if the worst occurs.Coming in two models, you've got a bit of a choice in how you want to pack your gear. The LitePak acts as a dry spot to carry your normal camera bag, acting as a shell against the elements. The ProPak works as a standard camera bag or the same as the LitePak with two interior storage totes for your gear and a dehumidifier. Both still have the basics though with a tripod mount, water bottle holder, space for a tablet, and more.
While it's a waterproof bag, it's also a smart one, using temperature and humidity sensors combined with Bluetooth. If it starts to get too hot or humid you'll automatically get a warning on your smartphone to see if there's an issue. As a plus, if you're out of range you can also get alerts so you don't lose track of your bag.Find out more on Inrigo's Kickstarter page and sign up while they still have early bird pledges available on the LitePak. Once these go retail they will be selling for $250-299 so getting the LitePak for $139 and ProPack for $179 is a steal. If everything stays on track the bags will be out around May of 2018. For those planning on traveling or shooting around water often this is the bag you might want to pick up.
Sony has announced the latest addition to the rapidly-growing E-mount lens lineup. The 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 gives an equivalent 27-202.5mm range when mounted on the α6500, α6300 and α6000 cameras and provides Optical SteadyShot (OSS) stabilization.Holy crap it's been over FOUR years since Sony has released an E-mount lens?! Looking back I can't find anything from Sony for their crop sensor line since the 16-70 f/4 Announced Aug 27, 2013. Third party manufacturers like Sigma have filled in some of the gaps but it is clear that filling out the FE mount line(for the full frame a7/a9 series cameras) was a priority. Now we should see a few more e mount lenses for their crop sensor line - the a6000/6300/6500. Sony needs more affordable lenses in this category to compete with Canon.
Based on the quality of recently released lenses I expect this to be a good lens and a strong value, especially for the traveler looking to take just one lens. The compact lens weighs just 325 g (0.72 lb)The new E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS APS-C Zoom Lens will ship in February 2018 and will be sold for about $600 US and $780 CA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iL7-m66E_IA hands-on look at cleaning up your catalog, archive the past year and getting ready for a new year, new catalog in Lightroom. Full of best practices in Adobe Lightroom for an organized photographer.I create a catalog for each year - this keeps the size of the catalog manageable and performance fairly snappy. I add the previous year’s catalog to a catalog I call the archive - this contains ALL my photos from the last several years and while it is a bit slower it is nice to be able to access all my photos, see all my 5-star images from the last several years, in one location. Catalog Clean Up - A chance for you to get rid of the junk before you merge the catalog with your archive catalog
Take some time to go back through the past year’s photos and delete the junk - Ideally you get rid of the junk on import but there might be some files that you couldn’t just bring yourself to delete - if you haven’t done anything with them in the last year, maybe it’s time to delete.
Mark the files you wish to delete as rejected - Keyboard shortcut: X
TIP: Set rating filter to show you all images rated 0 - in Grid select all of them at once and Reject
Use the flag filter to view all files you have rejected. Make sure there are no images you wish to keep
Click Photo > Delete Rejected Photo AND CHOOSE REMOVE FROM DISK
All images should be in a descriptive subfolder inside a folder for each year - before combining the catalog with the archive I like to make sure there are no orphan photos, photos outside a subfolder.
Click the + sign to the right of the Folder text in the Library Module and uncheck “Show Photos in subfolder”
If any photos are shown use that same + sign to create a subfolder(s) appropriate for those photos.
I use keywording to further organize my library of photos, keywording is a powerful way to find images that may be similar but exist in different folders. Before I archive the past year I like to check that I have given ALL images at least some basic keywords.
Library > Grid Module
Library Filter - Click Text - Set Keywords : Are Empty
Add basic keywords to any images that are displayed. They will vanish quickly from this filter. As you add keywords the statement is no longer true.
Remove Previews- I typically build 1:1 previews on import and Lightroom by default will remove these after 30 days - saves space in your catalog. I like to make sure that they are all gone and I remove any smart previews too.
Library > Previews > Discard
You are now done with the cleanup of the catalog.
Open or create a Master Archive catalog that will contain ALL past years (if you need to create the new catalog it is simply File > New Catalog - Choose a logical location.
In the Archive Catalog select File > Import from Another Catalog and find the 2017 (or last year’s catalog that you just cleaned up)
Take a moment to uncheck the import box next to any items or folders that you do not want to be imported.
Press Import - Go get a cup of tea.
Once completed you do want to make sure that the number of photos matches your expectations.
Now create a new catalog for the upcoming year and if your previous year catalog has imported correctly you may delete it to save space.
Empty Trash and get out and get shooting!
Do you have older photos you want to get organized in Lightroom? I have a video on that topic and lots more in my community - visit http://photorec.tv/join to learn more.
